New York Yacht Club American Magic AC75

“Today is an important step in the commissioning process for American Magic and B3,” American Magic skipper and president of sailing operations Terry Hutchinson said in a statement. “Our shore crew and engineers have been working methodically over the last 30 days to get us to this moment.”

For the unversed, the AC75s that will compete in the upcoming America’s Cup are the most complex and technologically advanced racing yachts ever built. The highly engineered foilers “fly” across the water at up to 50 knots. Crafted from lightweight carbon fiber, the racers are capable of lift in just 6.5 knots of wind but strong enough to survive an extreme crash in 25 knots.

The B3 will undergo further testing and sea trials in the coming months before her official naming ceremony and inaugural sail. American Magic will then set its sights on the upcoming America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta. The first two preliminary regattas of the AC40s were held in September and November, respectively. (American Magic actually won the September race.) The third and final preliminary regatta, which will take place in Barcelona from August 22 to 25, will see all six AC75s compete for the first time.

Where are they now? 6 famous America's Cup yachts

1851 schooner america’s sad demise.

In 1851, the schooner America , sailing for the New York Yacht Club, beat the Royal Yacht Squadron and laid claim to its 100 Guinea Cup. Thus the America’s Cup was born – what is now the oldest trophy in international sport – earning its name from that first winning yacht rather than the country, though the US did go on to hold the trophy for 100 years.

Where is America's Cup yacht  America now?

The famous America's cup yacht America changed hands – and names – a few times after the first historic race, and then wound up in the American Civil War as a Union ship. She stayed in the military as a training ship for the Navy until 1873, when she was sold to a former Civil War General for $5,000 (about $98,000 today). The general raced, maintained and refitted the boat, but after his death in 1893, she was passed down to his son who lacked interest in the schooner and allowed her to fall into disrepair. Despite being eventually donated back to the Navy, lack of maintenance left her seriously decayed. The nail was driven into the coffin when a major snowstorm caused the shed she was stored in to collapse in 1945, and America was scrapped and burned, bringing the history of one of the most famous sailing yachts of all times to a close.

America ’s legacy lives on to do this day, and there are replicas of the schooner you can sail on to relive the glory of this historic vessel. Climb aboard the 32 metre America 2.0 replica (pictured in the inset above) in Key West (November-April) and New York (May-October), or on a 42 metre replica out in San Diego .

1930 Shamrock V is still sailing

J Class yachts are synonymous with the America’s Cup as these slim, graceful beauties once represented the fleet racing for the Cup. The 36.42 metre Shamrock V , commissioned by Sir Thomas Lipton for his fifth and final bid, she was the first J Class yacht to compete for the Cup. The fact that she is the only J Class yacht to be built in wood makes it all the more remarkable that Shamrock V is still floating today.

Where is America's Cup yacht  Shamrock V now?

The Camper & Nicholsons -built J is in pretty perfect condition for a lady of her years. J Class yacht  Shamrock V is currently for sale and looking for a good home. The right owner could sail away on this piece of Cup history just in time as the  J Class yachts make a triumphant return to the America's Cup .

1987 movie star Stars & Stripes still racing

While the film Wind , one of the best boat movies , was inspired by Dennis Conner’s experience competing for the America’s Cup in 1983 on board Liberty , the yacht that was actually used in filming was the 12 Metre type sailing yacht Stars & Stripes 87 . She was called Geronimo in the film, but Stars & Stripes 87 was more than a screen legend. When Conner launched his own campaign, he wanted a culmination of all the Stars & Stripes yachts that came before her, and she was designed to be fast in heavy air. Stars & Stripes 87 wound up being the final 12 metre yacht to win the America’s Cup.

Where is the America's Cup yacht  Stars & Stripes 87 now?

Stars & Stripes 87 can be found in the Caribbean now, able to be sailed with the St Maarten 12 Metre Challenge , giving you a chance to take the helm (if you're lucky) of a real Cup winner.

1988 Stars & Stripes multihulls

Paving the way for the high-performance multihull America's Cup yachts that are redefining the competition is  Stars & Stripes – the catamaran. The first America's Cup multihull yacht, the US team's Stars & Stripes came to be by a cunning interpretation of the Deed of Gift, which only stipulated the challenging yachts be single masted and no more than 90 feet LWL. The result was anything but a true match race, with the much faster, wing-masted multihull Stars & Stripes winning the Cup in 1988.

Where are the America's Cup multihull yachts Stars & Stripes now?

Two versions of the multihull Stars & Stripes were built, a soft sail (S1) and a wing-masted yacht (H3). Stars & Stripes (S1) was acquired by American entrepreneur Steve Fossett and used to set speed records around the world before being sold in 2017 to Key Lime Sailing Club and Cottages in Key Largo, where she is used for day charters and racing. The actual Cup player, Stars & Stripes (H3) was bought by Mark Reece in Naples, Florida and was used for sailing charter trips, but her current status is unconfirmed.

1994 Stars & Stripes once used as a training yacht by Oracle Team USA

America’s Cup yacht Stars & Stripes (sail number 34) is probably most famous for not winning a Cup. It wasn’t because she didn’t perform under pressure, but because she never got the chance. While the 24 metre yacht, designed by David Peddic and built in 1994 by Goetz Boat Works, won the right to defend the Cup, Dennis Conner chose Young America (US 36) over Stars & Stripes . The new choice was no match for Team New Zealand’s Black Magic , which beat out Team Dennis Conner four times in a row.

Where is America's Cup yachts Stars & Stripes (US 34) now?

Famed America’s Cup Stars & Stripes (US 34) is earning a chance to prove herself on the racecourse yet again. She sails out of Chicago, racing against Abracadabra (US 54). After failing to win the Cup in 2000, this iteration of Abracadabra was bought by Larry Ellison, who used her as a training boat for his Oracle Team USA.

2003 USA 76 still sailing in San Francisco Bay

Sailed by the US challenging team in preparations for the 2003 America’s Cup in Auckland, New Zealand, USA 76 never made it to the Cup, but she came quite close. Making it to the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup final, USA 76 faced the Swiss Team Alinghi but didn’t come out on top. So the US team arranged for a “rematch” against Alinghi, with two races set in San Francisco Bay. While it didn’t change the results of the Cup, this time USA 76 bested the Swiss competitors twice over.

Where is America’s Cup yacht USA 76 now?

Fittingly, USA 76 resides in San Francisco Bay and is available for sailing. Capture the spirit of the most recent America’s Cup that was raced in the natural amphitheatre of the Bay by climbing aboard USA 76 for a racing adventure under the Golden Gate Bridge.

America’s Cup: Challenger series update

Published on September 17th, 2024 by Editor -->

by Craig Leweck, Scuttlebutt Sailing News The Louis Vuitton Cup will select the challenger to face the defender in the 37th America’s Cup, and each of the four remaining teams has two goals during the series: improve and advance.

When the British team earned the right to select their semi-final opponent, they decided that advancing was more important, and selected the Swiss team which had been most vulnerable in the qualifying round robin stage. But would the Brits be pushed hard enough to improve?

The British had little trouble beating the Swiss on Day One and Day Two , scoring four wins in the best of 9 semi-final match. Needing one more win, the light winds of Barcelona returned for Day Three , and when the Brits fell off the foils in the only race of the day, the Swiss scored a win to stay alive.

In the other semi final match, the racing was closer between Italy and USA, but in the four races held on Day One and Day Two , the Italians found a way to win when USA couldn’t. However, similar to the Brits on Day Three , Italy made a mess of the only race to give USA their first win.

With all four teams getting a day off before the series resumes on September 18, can the teams sitting at 1-4 win four straight races to advance? The Swiss have appeared out of their element too often, and the USA admits their AC75 has handling problems. Can it all be fixed in a day? Standing by.

AC40: the America’s Cup class’ younger sister

Toby Heppell

  • Toby Heppell
  • January 27, 2022

All about the AC40, which will be used for the Youth and Women's America's Cups and the America's Cup preliminary series

american cup sailboat

The 37th America’s Cup may be retaining the AC75 – albeit with a tweaked rule set – for actual Cup racing, but there will also be a new kid on the block in the form of the AC40. This one-design foiling monohull will be used by teams for training, development and America’s Cup preliminary regattas.

The purchase of one AC40 will be a prerequisite to entry into the 37th America’s Cup with the boats being used for an America’s Cup preliminary series (consisting of two events in the run up to the Cup itself), and also the reintroduced Youth America’s Cup.

Both the Youth AC and Preliminary Events (previously called the America’s Cup World Series) concept have been a feature of past America’s Cups, but both were dropped in the run-up to the 36th America’s Cup in Auckland.

The 37th AC will also introduce a new concept in the Women’s America’s Cup, which will also (controversially for many) take place in the smaller AC40 class that the youths will use.

The first AC40 is now in production by builders McConaghy Boats and is promised for delivery in July 2022 with production slated to be one new boat every five weeks thereafter.

Teams entering the America’s Cup and so purchasing an AC40 will also be given access to a simulator developed by Emirates Team New Zealand for pre-delivery training.

The birth of the AC40

In the run up to the 2021 America’s Cup all teams tried out various test boat platforms – often modified 30-40ft racing yachts – in order to get to grips with the previously untried new concept of keel-less large foiling monohulls that had been introduced for the AC75 .

These test boat platforms were used by the teams to test foil shapes. For some, it was also a first opportunity to start getting to grips with the complex soft wingsails that had been newly introduced to the America’s Cup world with the AC75 rule.

The last team to launch a test platform was the (successful) Defender of the Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand .

The Kiwis were last onto the water with their test boat (they launched Te Kahu , the test boat, after their first AC75 hit the water but before their second race boat AC75, Te Rehutai ), and also had the advantage of the team’s highly advanced simulator and computing platform. So it’s unsurprising that the New Zealand team’s test boat looked easily the most polished and closest to the AC75s in almost every way.

It is also hardly surprising that, as Defender and co-writer of the 37th America’s Cup rules, the new one-design AC40 class looks very similar indeed to both Te Rehutai (from which the hull shape is taken) and Te Kahu .

How does the AC40 work?

The AC40 is designed to behave in a similar way to the AC75. They have two large, weighted foils on either side of the boat but no traditional keel.

The boats are designed to foil on one foil only with the windward foil raised out of the water to reduce drag and provide increased righting moment.

With only four crew members onboard the AC40 there will be a reliance on a variety of automated systems, including a battery powered system replacing the need for grinders, and automated controls to adjust foiling height and self-tacking headsails.

In terms of the rig, the AC40 will mimic the AC75s and will feature the same D-shaped mast on which two sail skins will be hoisted to create a soft wingsail, offering plenty of control but a sail plan that can be easily raised and lowered from onboard.

As with both the finalists in the 36th America’s Cup there will not be a boom, with a variety of hydraulics used to shape the sail from foot to head.

Southern Spars will supply the mast spar, while North Sails will be the supplier for the sails.

Is the AC40 a one design?

The AC40 concept is designed to meet a variety of criteria, providing one-design racing in the run-up to the America’s Cup itself (and for the Youth and Women’s AC ) but also to function as a test platform for the teams to develop and trial concepts ahead of building their AC75s for the America’s Cup proper.

This second function is vital to control costs – it is much cheaper to develop concepts on a smaller class than it is on the larger AC75.

But when it comes to the two preliminary events ahead of the AC (a third preliminary event will be sailed in AC75s), the Youth America’s Cup, and the Women’s America’s Cup, all boats will need to be stripped back to conform to the one-design AC40 rule.

AC40 Performance

In their modelling so far, Emirates Team New Zealand report that in light winds the AC40 is expected to be able to sail at up to 26 knots at 46º upwind and 30 knots boat speed at 138º downwind.

At the upper limits of 20 knots TWS, the boat speeds are expected to escalate to 39 knots upwind at 41º and 44 knots at an angle of 155º downwind.

Can I buy an AC40?

In theory, an AC40 can be bought by anyone, allowing for the possibility of private ownership. As a further step on from this, Emirates Team New Zealand say the simulator will be available to private owners, should anyone be looking to purchase one of the scaled down AC class.

Whether or not any private owners would be tempted by this remains to be seen. It would certainly be a thrilling boat to own, though running costs and complexity could also be incredibly high.

America’s Cup: Alinghi Red Bull Racing eliminated; Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli suffer mid-race damage

Christopher Reive

The bell has tolled for Alinghi Red Bull Racing campaign in the 37th America’s Cup.

In their return to the arena for the first time since 2010, the Swiss entry was eliminated 5-2 by Ineos Britannia in the semifinals of the Louis Vuitton Cup challenger series this morning.

It was a match-up chosen by the British, who earned the right to select their semifinal opponent after finishing the round-robin stage at the top of the leaderboard. With the Swiss coming into the semifinals as the lowest-ranked team, it made sense – and looked like a smart play when Ineos Britannia raced out to a 4-0 lead.

But Alinghi fought back, winning Tuesday morning’s race to get on the board before claiming their second win in the first outing this morning. However, they weren’t able to double the dose as the British sailed a strong seventh race to end Alinghi’s campaign.

“Happy with that. [It was a] tough day out here. For people watching on the telly it probably looked like we were doing a pretty bad job, but it’s pretty hard out here with the wind all over the place and the waves,” Ineos Britannia starboard helmsman Sir Ben Ainslie said afterwards.

“Also, credit to Alinghi. They sailed a great first race and pushed us hard in the second race. It’s obviously hard on them to not make it through this stage. They’re a great team.

“I think we’re all very relieved to have got through today and survived and made it through to the final, because in this stuff anything could happen.”

The Brits now await their opponent for the final of the challenger series, with American Magic winning both of their races against Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli to bring their semifinal series to 4-3 in favour of the Italians.

The Italians suffered a gear failure in their second race of the day, with the traveller track on their AC75 breaking with a loud bang and forcing them out of the contest. At the time of the incident, the Italians were winning and looked well-positioned to consolidate their lead late in what had been a razor-thin contest to that point.

Their shore team will now be working around the clock to repair the damage before tomorrow’s action, with that semifinal to be settled – should the weather play ball.

“We’ve got a lot of faith in our shore team,” Luna Rossa starboard helmsman Jimmy Spithill said.

“They’re definitely one of the best in the business. We have to wait until we get back to shore, but there’s no doubt our boys will pull out every stop we need to get us back out there.”

Team NZ hit the halfway mark

Team NZ’s youth team have hit the halfway point of the first stage of the Youth America’s Cup regatta, with Group A completing another two races last night.

With the Youth America’s Cup comprised of 12 teams, the entries have been split into two groups – America’s Cup teams in one, invited nations in the other – with each completing eight fleet races before the top three move into the knockout stages.

Now through four races, Team NZ have work to do if they are to be involved in the next stage of the Youth America’s Cup, currently sitting fourth in their group.

It was another mixed day for the New Zealand crew, with a big splashdown in race four providing costly as they came away with a third and a fourth from the day’s two contests – the same results they posted on day one.

Italian crew Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli look like the team to beat as they again excelled and hold a comfortable lead atop the standings.

On day two, the two outings only featured four teams, with the French and Americans not racing. The French are yet to complete a race in the Youth America’s Cup after issues with their boat saw them ruled out of day one as well.

Alinghi and American Magic Wins Keep Louis Vuitton Cup Semis Alive

  • By Dave Reed
  • September 17, 2024

Tom Slingsby

With motivational speeches delivered and celebratory send offs from their respective bases in Barcelona’s Port Vell, both American Magic and Alinghi Red Bull Racing stepped back into the ring to fight their campaign-saving match on the third day of racing at the Louis Vuitton Cup Semi Finals. Pick the preferred cliché—do or die, one and done, now or never, fight to live another day—and any one of them would be appropriate for the moment.

And as it was in the beginning of the Louis Vuitton Cup, the forecast for winds teasing the bottom of the raceable wind range elevated stress levels even more so for the American and Swiss camps. Neither had been particularly strong in the light-wind races earlier in the Louis Vuitton Cup series, and the potential for mistakes and displacement sailing was extremely high, inviting another and new cliché: fly or die.

INEOS Britannia

Into the first pre-start of the day was Alinghi Red Bull Racing entering on time on port as INEOS Britannia was in the water struggling to get foiling, a sign of more to come. The Brits entered slightly late, circled high and came back trailing Alinghi from above the line. Jibing back to start early allowed Alinghi Red Bull Racing to push the British to the end of the line, dipped and turned up to start a fraction early, picking up an OCS penalty by the length of its long foil arm.

A prompt tack away cleared the penalty but sent the Swiss to the right side of the course, where the wind was notably lighter. INEOS Britannia owned the cross by a good 50 meters, controlled the first leg without pressure from the Swiss. Clean turns in conservative sailing kept the British comfortably out front, seeing them through the first gate with a 40-meter and 17-second lead.

With slightly better pace downwind, INEOS was through the next gates with a 400-meter lead. Their runaway advantage evaporated immediately, however, when they reached the left course boundary and failed to foil through the tack. With INEOS Britannia stuck in the water and unable to accelerate, the Swiss rounded through the gate with just enough speed to pull off a foiling tack at the boundary. And in a blink, Alinghi was in charge of the race on Leg 3, establishing a lead that carried them through the finish with a win—with both boats in displacement mode and finishing just inside the race-time limit, thanks to a shortened course by the race committee.

Arnaud Psarofaghis

Then came the match that American Magic was desperate to win to turn their fortunes around. With just enough wind to start the race, American Magic entered on port at 34 knots. Luna Rossa circled back from the left side of the starting box and American Magic’s Tom Slingsby, in the starboard cockpit, took one attempt at hunting the Italians with a port-starboard cross. Luna Rossa got past without issue, which allowed them to set up high and the Americans well ahead of their timing.  To leeward and a good 2-knots slower, American Magic was pinned and Luna Rossa simply climbed over the top of the Americans.

With simultaneous tacks at the boundary American Magic attempted to sail low and fast to leeward of the Italians silver boat. Luna Rossa played a tight cover until American Magic was able to break the cover and get to the middle of the course and a cross-course split. Still Luna Rossa nailed its first layline and was through the gate with a 17-second lead, splitting sides again. Luna Rossa owned the first downwind cross and a 190-meter lead and was clinical with its jibes.

Luna Rossa and American Magic

Through the next gate, Luna Rossa had a clean rounding to the left and American Magic right by 17 seconds still. American Magic came back from the right and jumped into the lead, with a tight cross and the Italians picking up a penalty while ducking Patriot. The Italians easily burned off the penalty and reclaimed the lead on the next cross, but when they met again, Luna Rossa, on port, tried a close cross and the umpires had their finger on the penalty button with an easy call. The boats met again at the get with American Magic with a 20-meter lead and only 2 seconds between them and another split.

From opposite sides of the course, American Magic owned the cross by 27 meters and even speeds on the run. At the next intersection American Magic had an easy cross, sailing their best light-air race of the series. At the first downwind gate, American Magic, on starboard, had a straight shot at the right-hand gate mark (looking downwind) and were clean through.

37th America’s Cup - Louis Vuitton Cup - Semi Finals Race Day 3

Luna Rossa entered the zone first and tried to force a penalty on the Americans but Slingsby knew exactly what to do, giving the Italians plenty of berth and cruising through to leeward. The hairpin turn for the Italians was too much for their foils to handle, and they were off the foils and stuck at the bottom corner of the course, unable to build enough speed to tack at the boundary.

With a course all their own, American Magic stretched their lead to a leg and a mile and ultimately a 2-mile win, keeping the series alive and ready to fight another day.

“It was a good race,” said Slingsby after the only race of the day—the second being postponed when the wind dropped below the limit. “The start was close. The boat felt really good. We have been making some changes, and in those light conditions that were kind of a weak spot for us a week ago, the boat feels as good as it ever has in those conditions. That’s exciting, and we are going to be faster again on Wednesday. I think the hardest win is the first one and now we are off and running. If you look at the four races they have beaten us, it’s by a total of 50 seconds over them all – and we just beat them by a lap. So, yes, we are confident.”

AC TEAMS BASES

The six America’s Cup team bases are located around Port Vell: Emirates Team New Zealand is at the corner of Moll de les Drassanes, which leads to the World Trade Center. INEOS Britannia and Alinghi Red Bull Racing are next to the Aquarium, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and American Magic bases are on the southern side of the port towards W Hotel, whereas Orient Express Racing Team is on the Moll de Ponent. Generally, access to the team bases is not permitted, but this is a matter for each team to advise. You can still get very close and watch all the action as the teams dock in and out each day.

VIEWING AREAS

There are a lot of options to follow the action–watch from different places on different days to give a varied experience. Plaça de la Rosa dels Vents offers great views of the teams when they are going in and out of the port before and after racing. Port Olímpic is close to the team bases of the UniCredit Youth and Puig Women's Teams, while the beaches of St. Miguel, Barceloneta, and Somorrostro, with their fine, golden sand and shallow waters are also good vantage points to watch when the racing is on: Just be sure to have your mobile fully charged to follow the races LIVE. Racing is streamed lived and available free to watch on YouTube , Facebook and the official America's Cup website.

The America's Cup Fanzones are in Plaça del Mar and Bogatell. They allow a direct view of the race area and on-water action. The giant screens, which go live when the Race Village stage show starts, allow you to view all the action once the race day begins. Fanzones are ‘free access’, as well so no tickets apply. Opening times for exhibits, food and entertainment offerings are 12:00–10:00pm*. The Plaça del Mar Fanzone (12:00–8:00pm) overlooks the race area, so it is a great vantage point. The Port Olímpic viewing area, which overlooks the UniCredit Youth and Puig Women's team's bases, is at the northern end of the race area, so it is great to view the start and action around the turning marks at that end.

RACE VILLAGE

The America's Cup Race Village along Moll de la Fusta opens at 12:00pm* and closes between 10:00pm–11:00pm*, depending on the day and scheduled activities.  Access is FREE, so no tickets apply, but there is a capacity control system in place to prevent overcrowding. The Race Village is where you will find the main stage and giant viewing screens, which feature the daily show with professional hosts on the main stage, along with a range of activations and exhibits, as well as food and entertainment offerings. There is no direct view of the water from this space, but the jumbo-sized viewing screens allow spectators to stay in the middle of the action.

ON YOUR BOAT

If you own a vessel or are planning to  charter one , areas will be dedicated for yachts and small craft around the racecourse perimeter, outside of the race box ‘boundary’. We encourage you to go out on the water only if you have a vessel that is 5 metres or longer.

If you plan to get on the water amongst the action, then you MUST visit our on-water info&rules page and  register your boat .

ON WATER INFO & RULES

We want everyone to enjoy the racing so if you're out on the water, make sure you know the rules and are up to date with the latest info

RACE COURSE

The race course is about 1.7nm long (about 3km) and between 0.5nm and 0.8nm (0.9km to 1.5km) wide, with boundaries on all sides that the boats must stay within. All the spectators’ boats have a designated yellow zone to look at the race.

It's called a windward-leeward course, named after the orientation of the course directly into the wind and away from the wind. From the start, the yachts race directly upwind – to windward, round the first mark then downwind, or to leeward. Rinse and repeat.

At three minutes to the start, the boats "enter" – sailing from above and outside the start line, and from opposite ends. This is the beginning of the "pre-start". The teams take turns over which side they enter from, as the boat coming in from the right-hand side has the advantage – with the right-of-way.

It is a winner-takes-all format. The America's Cup is famously a race in which, as Queen Victoria was informed during the first contest in 1851, "there is no second.". In 1851, the schooner America, sailing for the New York Yacht Club, beat the Royal Yacht Squadron and laid claim to its 100 Guinea Cup.Thus the America's Cup was born - what is now the oldest trophy in international sport - earning its name from that first winning yacht rather than the country, though the US did go on to hold the trophy for 100 years.

  17. THE TECHNOLOGY

It was August 2012 when the sailing world was turned upside down by a 72- foot catamaran flying in the Hauraki Gulf.
