DS-16 is a 16 ′ 0 ″ / 4.9 m monohull sailboat designed by G. Diller & H. Schwill and built by DS Yachts (Schwill Yachts) starting in 1970.

Drawing of DS-16

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Available with a keel/cb or shallow draft fixed keel. Also called DILLER SCHWILL 16.

Specifications DS-16

Review of DS-16

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

CentreBoard

The DS-16 is equipped with a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The boat can sail close to the beach as the draft is just 0.18 - 0.28 meter (0.59 - 0.89 ft) dependent of the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for DS-16 is 3.01, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.1 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for DS-16 is about 53 kg/cm, alternatively 300 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 53 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 300 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 39.00

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 10m 2 (107 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 4.9 m(16.0 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)
Genoa sheet4.9 m(16.0 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)
Mainsheet 12.2 m(40.0 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)

DS 16 sails and parts?

  • Add to quote

no sails I always check craigslist and ebay 1st. If you know how to rig a simple sailboat, you can use SOME parts from a general hardware store. Real boat parts are always best, but some things are hard to find if you don't live in a place where people sail much. I had to rig some stuff on my Bucc18 and I haven't had her out yet to see if she'll go, but if you can get the main up, control the boom, let out the jib and steer, I'm pretty sure you can sail. I almost picked up a mutineer with no mainsail before I found the 'Rose'. I looked for a couple of days and found one with the right measurements on craigslist. The guy had just bought racing sails for his 15' dinghy and was getting rid of the stock rig. I think he could have been new to the game 'cause all he wanted was 60 bucks. He lived too far away so I asked him if he would ship. He said he would for 75 total. Poor guy probably could have got a couple hundred for them, but some folks just want room in the closet. It sounds like a fun project. I wish you all the best. One thing to remember though, make sure your hull number, title, and registration stuff is in good order. Steven

Try the Daysailor Assco.... DaySailer.org You should be able to get the info you need plus info on sails. Also check if there is an active fleet in your area. I am sure someone would be willing to help.

meetoo I recently purchased a 16ft Diller Schwill a couple of weeks ago. It appears that sails are hard to come by. I was doing a google search to find them, just to see how much they were going for -- new or used, and your blog note was the only thing I came across. I suppose craigslist would be the best bet for used sails. My main sail is ok for now. needs a little patching here and there. and my jib is good. I have an extra jib, but one of its corners is broken and needs to be fixed. Once you find a main sail and in need of jib, I'll sell you the extra jib if you want. Otherwise, I'll keep it as a spare. Good luck. If I come across a used sail for you, I'll let you know. You can also keep your eye open for a real cheap DS-16 that may have a broken rig or something but with the sails in good condition. Another thing, someone selling a DS-16 might have two or three sets that come with the boat; it wouldn't hurt to make an offer for one of the sets. Also, the DS-16 is sometimes referred to as a Schwill yacht or a Schwill sailboat. I am not sure what kind of info you found so far, if you do a google search, you can find the specs for a DS-16. Jeff

one more thing here's a good list of sail stores and manufacturers. There are many stores out there that sell used sails. good luck.

Hello, I am inquiring about the DS 16 group. Is there such a group? If so, I wou Hello, I am inquiring about the DS 16 group. Is there such a group? If so, I would like to know many DS 16 owners are there. I have questions about whether I need to take down the mast. I am going to have the boat on blocks in a marina in a bay. I recently bought the boat. Should I take it down and inspect the rigging, or can that wait till the Spring. The boat weighs 500 pounds. Will the boat be ok with the mast up during the winter? If there is anyone out there who can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Wow, the memories! A DS 16 was the first sailboat I owned in the late 70s. One of my first dates with my wife was on that boat. Got knocked down when a little storm popped up on Barnegat Bay. Down flooded the cockpit lockers when they popped open while the rail was under water. Gave her a nasty black eye with my fist starting the engine. I must have been good at other things for her still to marry me! Gary H. Lucas

about that DS 16 you had Hey Gary, I also have a DS-16 at Barnegat Bay. It may be your old one for all that I know. Do you remember how you rigged the topping lift? The previous owner told me that he kept it on with the boom up, but that would cause serious flogging. If you get back to me, that would be great. Jeff

Does anybody know how tall the mast of a DS16 is?

ds 16 sailboat

I Googled "DS 16 Mast" and it looks like 22'? http://www.capecodshipbuilding.com/site/pdfs/daysailer.pdf

i have a ds 16, and the mast base broke, i held mast upright and drilled two holes thru seat and mast bottom ran bolts thru. it has worked fine. a short while ago my mast and jib were stolen I do not know what to replace it with

The Diller Schwill 16 and O'Day Daysailer (at 16+ feet) are not the same boats.

So which does the OP have? There are lots of good sources of parts and info for the ODay Daysailer - and Stuart Marine still makes them if you want new.

Thank you. I have an old Diller Schwill 16 on Barnagette bay. Had mast stolen recently. seeking a replacement or an idea for a fix (replacement)

ds 16 sailboat

My swing keel (DS 16) has come unattached to the cable and the hardware piece in the hole in the keel has been lost. Anyone know where I can get a replacement? Or can any one provide a picture of this part with dimensions so I can find a substitute?

Our mast base bracket broke while sailing (the one that attaches to the deck and the mast is supported with) Does anyone have one or know where I can purchase one?

I just committed to buy one. Hull # 198. I'm told they were built in Odessa, Ontario, Canada. Here is what I found on sailboatdata.com http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=3318 The manufacture closed in 1986... I think... http://boat-manufacturers.findthebe...facturer-Schwill-Yachts-Inc-still-in-business I was kind of looking for a small day sailor for the family now that my 2 Mac 26Ds are going north for the summer. (See my profile for that adventure.) I really wanted another Mac but... I found this DS-16 advertised on Kijiji.... And since I "was kind of looking" (wanted) a little day sailor... I pick it up on Saturday. It's 2 hours away in Windsor Ont. so it will be a daddy daughter day trip. I'll tell Squeaky it is hers but daddy gets to use it when ever and how ever he wants. At least until she is old enough to tow it herself. I can't seem to find a dedicated forum for the DS-16. Or any info on this site. Has anyone a link or info they could pass on? Thanks in advance guys!

Just an update.. I can't pick the boat up until some snow melts. I'm told that the boat is in a storage yard behind a motor home that's behind a huge pile of snow. (Windsor Ont. is Ontario Canada's banana belt. I was surprised to see the amount of snow in the first picture...) So I'm guessing another month or so before I get to bring it home.

Alas! The guy sold it out from under me. He got allot more $ though. Oh well my search continues...

No Squeaky didn't know. Probably a good thing. That's the 2nd boat in 3 months that I've lost that way. Someone else comes in and offers allot more cash. I think next time I'll just hit the highway with cash in my pocket and the hitch on the car. No more higher offers can be taken if they don't have the boat. I should probably just spend a bit extra and get another Mac 26... Around here though people want what they paid for it new! My search continues. I'm open to suggestions too!

DS16 Owners Group I see you didn't get the DS16, but here's the link to the owner's group to answer the original question. https://ca.groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/DillerSchwill-DS16sailboats/info If you are still looking to buy one, I have one for sale please take a look at my Kijiji ad. http://www.kijiji.ca/v-sailboat/city-of-toronto/ds-16-sailboat-with-trailer-motor/598057910?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

The DS-16 is a Canadian trailerable sailboat , that was designed by G. Diller and Herman Schwill and first built in 1970. [1] [2]

The boat was built by Diller-Schwill (DS Yachts) in Odessa, Ontario Canada , but it is now out of production. [1] [2] [3]

The DS-16 is a small recreational keelboat , built predominantly of fiberglass , with wood trim. It has a fractional sloop rig, a transom-hung rudder and a fixed shallow draft keel or optionally a centreboard . It displaces 5000NaN0 and carries 1350NaN0 of ballast. [1] [2]

The centreboard version has a draft of 4feet with the centreboard extended and 0.58feet with it retracted, allowing beaching or ground transportation on a trailer . [1] [2]

The boat is normally fitted with a small outboard motor for docking and maneuvering. [1] [2]

The design has a hull speed of 5.07kn. [2]

Operational history

In a review Michael McGoldrick wrote, "The DS 16 is probably the smallest sailboat with lockable cuddy cabin that you'll find... The cabin has a little over 3 feet (1 metre) of sitting headroom and is supposed to have enough space for a double berth, although it's likely to be extremely cramped for two adults... With a total length of 16 feet (4.88 m) and weight of only 650 pounds (295 kg), it should be possible to trailer the DS 16 with almost any car." [4]

  12. Anyone ever have a Diller-Schwill DS-16? Good basic trainer?

The DS-16 can be sailed or motored in a good many semi protected areas, run up on the beach making the boat a very good way to camp along any body of water. If the weather gets raw, a warm small cabin for 2 would be far better than a tent and a tarp. Without friends none of this is possible. Plyboy. Senior Member.
