A Complete and Easy Guide on Felucca Sailboat Napkin Folding

icon for viewcounter

Introduction:

Learn how to make a sailboat napkin fold in just 7 steps! Presentation counts when serving your next meal, and nothing shows your guests how much you care about a beautiful table like a well-folded napkin. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to fold a napkin into a sailboat shape in just minutes. Inspired by the beauty and aesthetic of the Egyptian Felucca boat,  these napkins will add a nice touch to your table settings! Our simple instructions for folding the napkin are suitable for both paper napkins and cloth napkins. This folding technique would go great in simple dinners and luncheons and children’s parties!

Create the triangular sail of the Felucca sailboat

How to Make a Felucca Sailboat Napkin - Step 01

Lay a square piece of table napkin on a flat surface

How to Make a Felucca Sailboat Napkin - Step 02

Fold the table napkin in half by folding the top edge to the bottom edge.

How to Make a Felucca Sailboat Napkin - Step 03

Bring the right corner to the bottom middle part of the table napkin.

How to Make a Felucca Sailboat Napkin - Step 04

Now bring the bottom right corner of the napkin to the bottom left corner.

How to Make a Felucca Sailboat Napkin - Step 05

Fold the square shaped napkin in half by bringing the bottom right corner to the top left corner. We have now made the triangular sail of the Felucca sailboat napkin.

Shape the boat of the felucca napkin

How to Make a Felucca Sailboat Napkin - Step 06

Orientate the position of the napkin like the image above. We will make the actual boat at the bottom edge of this table napkin.

How to Make a Felucca Sailboat Napkin - Step 07

Peel a part of the the topmost layer of the bottom corner diagonally to the top.

How to Make a Felucca Sailboat Napkin - Finish

Do the same on the bottom layer as well. To make it stand on a plate, bring the right and left corners inwards to the middle. This will form a cone.

The sailboat napkin inspired by the Egyptian Felucca boat is done!

  • Is the sailboat napkin not standing up? It may be due to its stiffness. Use a thick, stiff piece of cloth or paper napkins instead! You can also starch the cloth napkin by making your own mix of starch and water. Spray it evenly on a flat surface, then iron it with an ironing board. You can also get ready-made starch spray from the store or make your own by mixing equal parts starch and water in a bowl. Then evenly coat the napkin with the mixture on a flat surface until it dries entirely, being careful not to get any of it onto your hands before drying
  • It is always a plus if you can present your guests with a table napkin that has been ironed first. Not only will it look nice, guests will feel like they're coming to the right place when they see this option.

Note: This fold works best with a cloth napkin that has some body to it. Press your folds with an iron along the way so your finished ‘boat’ is in shipshape!

  • Start with your napkin, right side facing down. Press with an iron to remove any wrinkles.
  • Fold top edge down to line up with bottom edge to create a rectangle. The opening will be at the bottom and fold at the top.
  • Take the right corner and fold it down to make a triangle, lining up bottom edges. This will create the sail shape.
  • Fold the triangle over to the left, aligning all four bottom corners and edges.
  • Take top left corner and fold it down on top of your other triangle.
  • Open up bottom edges of triangle, flip edges up to make a cuff. Adjust the cuff as needed so your boat will sit on your table or plate.

Sail Boat Napkins

When my wife decided to throw a baby shower for my sister-in-law, she asked me to make boats out of paper napkins. What do you mean, boats out of napkins!? Ummm, napkins (especially paper ones) definitely do not float. However, it turns out that for hundreds of years, people in Japan have been successfully turning paper into all sorts of things, including boats . . . Origami! Of course!

Sure enough we found an origami tutorial to create sail boats out of square paper. Without too much difficulty, I adapted the instructions for use on our square paper napkins, and was soon whipping out sail boat napkins that Jennifer used in the shower place settings. While napkins are slightly more difficult to work with than origami paper, after a couple, you’ll be folding them like a pro. And of course the same idea would work well with many other origami patterns. Here are step-by-step instructions for the sail boat:

1. Completely unfold the napkin to form a large square.

2. Fold the upper left corner down to the lower right corner.

3. Unfold and rotate the napkin 90 degrees (in either direction).

4. Fold the lower left and upper right corners into the middle.

5. Bring the upper left and lower right corners together, folding in the upper and lower halves of the diagonal so that the triangles in the lower left and upper right come together.

6. Fold down the left flap down to the bottom point.

7. Fold the left flap back up, creasing about half an inch below the center line.

8. Tuck the bottom portion of the left flap behind the center line.

9. Fold the bottom of the diamond to the center.

10. Flip the sail boat over. Anchors aweigh!

how to make a sailboat napkin

Fish made out of paper napkins will give a party table a special look. Fish is the perfect decor for nautical baby showers, beach parties, fishing theme parties for kids, summer parties, swimming pool parties, seafood feasts, and other marine events. Every napkin fold on the page can be made in advance and just add it to the plate when we need it. Great project to involve kids in party preparation. Each technique has photos but it is just simple examples of how to get your imagination started to decorate your summer party.

Plates decorated with fish made out of paper napkins are a solution if we don’t have themed paper plates or table covers. No secret, paper plates without design are less expensive than those with marine designs on them. We can easily use simply designed paper plates or plastic plates from large stores like Costco or Sam’s club which is the best buy where I live. By adding different napkin folds , we make the party table appearance different every time with the same plates and napkins. Just one element a fish from a napkin is going to change immediately the appearance of the table. We don’t need theme plates if we host a nautical party with these napkin folds. Just decorate plates with a simple paper napkin fish. Check out the techniques!

To make napkin foldings in the shape of fish I use 13′ x 13′ (33 cm x 33 cm) size square paper napkins.

On this page 5 techniques:

1. Fish napkin folding from 2 napkins. (Very easy and almost no time to make!)

2. The fish shape from one paper napkin. (Easy technique)

3. Fish in the shape of a triangle. (Can be used as utensils holder as well)

4. Origami fish shape paper napkin. (Can be used as an animal face as well if we turn the tail to the top)

5. Napkin fold in the shape of fish with fins and tails. (most detailed fish in the list)

To make more realistic looks I added candy eyeballs to my fish. They are 100% edible and a great small addition to any table! I used “Wilton” company candy eyeballs and they have a variety of sizes. We can also make themselves edible eyeballs by using candy melds.

1. Easy Fish Fold From 2 Paper Napkins

This idea of how to fold paper napkins into a fish is super easy! We can make this fish with an open mouth and with a closed mouth. This is beneficial if we want to add a name place card or other additional decors. For example, we can place a name card in a fish mouth, as an example. Our imagination is only the limit!

This fish napkin fold in a triangle shape and has a small tail. It is an easy technique but needs little practice. One more option to choose when you will prepare for your party. Looks like too many steps to make this fish but if you make one successfully, the next will be so easy. Can be great decor for a marine party or seafood dinner!

This napkin fold in the shape of a fish is origami-style and super easy to make. It gives us one more option to decorate a table with a fish shape from the napkin for a fishing theme party or a summertime seafood dinner. We can add to this fish candy eye or without as you can see in the photo below. I really like this method because the fish has a head and a tail. To make a fish takes just a few steps and we can make them in advance.

Napkin folding can transform an ordinary dinner table into a charming display. Swan napkins make a simple and elegant presentation, and, best of all, you can fold several in a matter of minutes. The next time you have guests, use either paper napkins or cloth napkins for these lovely creations.

Making a Swan with a Paper Napkin

Step 1 Start with a square paper napkin.

  • White napkins are a classic choice here, but you can also use colored or patterned napkins. If using a patterned or colored napkin, begin with the pattern or colored side down .

Step 2 Fold the napkin in half vertically.

  • Reinforce the fold by running your fingers along it. It is important to have a crisp line here.

Step 3 Open the napkin.

  • It might help to imagine the new fold as pointing to a one o'clock position.

Step 5 Fold the left corner over to the right.

  • The part that goes past it will turn into the swan's "beak," so let that inform how you make your fold.

Step 9 Make the beak.

  • The "back" of the neck should form a vertical line ending in the bottom tip.

Step 13 Fold up the bottom tip of the top flap slightly.

Making a Two-Swan Heart with Cloth Napkins

Step 1 Lay your napkin flat on the table.

  • Note that you can use either a square or a rectangular napkin for this step.
  • Napkins of stiffer material may be easier to work with.

Step 2 Roll both sides in until they meet each other.

  • If you are using a rectangular napkin, make your rolls so that they run the long way.
  • To be sure that your rolls are equal halves, make a light crease through the center of the napkin for reference by folding it in half and unfolding. (If you're using a rectangular napkin, make the crease so that it runs the longer length of the cloth.)

Step 3 Fold the napkin into a scrunched-up Z shape.

  • Holding the napkin lengthwise in front of you, fold it about two-thirds of the way back on itself.
  • Next, take the part you've folded over and fold it back on itself once again, this time in half.

Step 4 Place something heavy on top of the folded napkin for one minute.

  • When the minute is up, remove the weight.

Step 5 Repeat Steps 1-4 on another napkin.

  • Keep in mind that very smooth table surfaces may cause the swans to slide away from one another; try to place them on a tablecloth, placemat, or other surface that offers a bit of friction.

About This Article

Tami Claytor

To fold a square paper napkin into a swan, lay the napkin flat and turn it so that one of the corners is pointed toward you in a “diamond” orientation. Fold the napkin in half vertically to make a triangle, then open it up again and flip it over so the crease is facing down. Fold the right corner just past the center crease, then do the same thing with the left corner. Your diamond should now be folded into thirds. Grab the edge of the top flap and fold it back on itself, making a new crease parallel to the center line. Pull the bottom flap out and do the same thing. Take the bottom corner of the napkin and fold it up so it extends just past the top corner. Fold down the very tip of the new top corner to make the beak of the swan. Flip the napkin over and fold it in half along the first crease you made. Lay it down on its side so you see the swan in profile, then fold up the flap on the bottom of the shape to make half of the base. Flip the napkin over again and do the same thing on the other side. Open up the folds at the bottom and stand your swan up on its base. Keep reading to learn how to make a two-swan heart with cloth napkins! Did this summary help you? Yes No

How to Catch Flathead Catfish

How to Catch Flathead Catfish

Some fish are just mean. Those species with razor-sharp teeth and bad attitudes that chew the inside of the net, slam around inside the boat, and push your tackle to the limit, fighting for every inch whenever they’re hooked. Pike and muskie , bowfin , gar , and even bass all fall into this category. However, if there was some sort of rowdy watering hole where the toughest fish gathered to compare their scars and growl at one another, there’s no doubt that the flathead catfish would be working the door.

Flatheads are just the biggest, toughest, and angriest fish in freshwater. They’ve got shoulders like a pro wrestler, a cavernous mouth with jaws like a pit bull, and the cheerful attitude of a grizzly bear with a toothache. Both the bane and obsession of catfish noodlers across the country, flatheads tend to live in the deepest, darkest holes in the rivers and lakes they swim in, guarding their lairs like angry trolls. Catching flatheads on conventional gear can be a serious trial for the uninitiated, yet when you have the right setup and fish in the right places, it’s a challenge you can meet head-on.

Flathead Equipment and Bait

Fishing for flatheads calls for some heavy gear. The fish are strong as an ox and when hooked, they tend to railroad anglers by hurling themselves back into the logs, boulders, and underwater brush from whence they came. Being able to stop them is key, so a heavy-action rod strung with 30- to 50-pound braided line is the absolute minimum, though as flatheads aren’t gear-shy , you wouldn’t be under-gunned fishing with 80- or even 100-pound test line.

Unlike other catfish species, which are scent feeders and more than willing to eat stinky baits like chicken livers, rotten worms, and even soap , flatheads are predators. With their big mouth and bad attitude, flatheads can and will engulf all manner of creatures. From panfish and perch to bass and frogs to turtles —if it swims and shares the water with them, flatheads will try and eat it—so you should adjust your baits accordingly. Large shiners and minnows are popular and will definitely catch you a couple fish, but if you want to catch a real monster flathead, your bait should be as big as their appetite. Try catching and using your own large live baits like 8- to 10-inch suckers , large bullhead , bluegill , or even a medium-sized bass (where legal). You can also have decent luck using large pieces of fresh cut-bait, but most flathead anglers believe the livelier the bait, the better.

Rig your baits with a large, strong 2/0 to 6/0 circle hook that won’t bend or break when hooked to a big cat. In addition to the hooks, you’re also going to want a selection of casting weights, some heavy-duty barrel swivels, and a large landing net , gaff , or even a fish tailer , especially if you’re fishing solo. A pair of gloves can also be handy for making sure you can get a good grip on a pissed-off flathead, as will a short length of rope that you can slip through its gills if you’re planning on bringing it home for dinner .

Where to Find Flatheads

Flatheads can survive and thrive in a variety of different water bodies and water conditions. They can be found almost everywhere, from small clear streams to muddy creeks to massive rivers as well as lakes and reservoirs . This can make finding flatheads a substantial challenge as they occupy different areas in different environments and tend to migrate to different areas depending on water temperatures and available food sources. However, there are some general areas to look for flatheads in different lakes and rivers that are almost guaranteed to be holding a few hungry fish all year long.

In rivers and streams, flatheads like structure. Boulders are good, but deadfall logs, beaver dams , and brush piles are even better. Look for these woody areas on the outer bends of rivers, paying particular attention to any that are immediately adjacent to drop-offs and/or have deeper water upstream of them. Flatheads will cram themselves into these patches of cover in the daylight and then move out into the deeper water to feed at sundown .

When fishing for flatheads in lakes and reservoirs, your best bet is to fish along drop-offs. The bottom of dams , steep slopes along rock walls, the ends of piers and bases of bridges, as well as the points of islands are all fantastic flathead spots. You can also find them in shallower water along sand and gravel bars that are adjacent to deeper water, especially during the evening or when fishing during a cold front.

Flathead Fishing Tactics

There are only two real tactics for flathead fishing: soaking your bait on the bottom or letting it drift on the surface. Both methods are easy to rig up, and both can be equally effective depending on the waterway you are fishing and the mood of the fish themselves. However, while the setup may seem simple enough, the exact rigging and placement of your baits are crucial and need to be exact if you want to have any success.

When fishing along the bottom, you’re going to want to set up your baits so that they can swim freely just above the bottom. To do this, you’re going to first want to slide a heavy one- to four-ounce casting weight onto your line that will hold the bait in place and prevent it from freely swimming, causing it to struggle and kick. Next, tie on a stout barrel swivel and then add 12 to 20 inches of 25- to 30-pound test line to the other end and then tie on your hook and bait. Hook your bait through its lip and out through its nostril and you’ll be ready to fish.

If you’re fishing the bottom of a river, you’re going to want to cast your line just upstream of your targeted piece of structure, either directly above or across from it, so that your bait lands along the edge of the deeper water. This will allow your bait to freely swim and dangle just above the drop-off. Flatheads tend to feed up, so when they’re cruising along the bottom and glance up to see your bait struggling above their heads, they won’t be able to resist coming up to get it.

In a lake or reservoir, you’re going to want to drop your baits along the shelf of drop-offs. Using the same setup, cast your line either out from or along the edge of the drop, so that it comes to rest in the center of the slope. It can be a tricky thing to do, especially along a steep drop-off. However, as with river fishing, this will allow your bait to hang and struggle tantalizingly above the patrolling flatheads, triggering them to rise to the occasion.

When fishing in shallower water from three to five feet deep without any visible structure, you’re going to want to keep your baits along the surface of the water. This is an especially effective tactic when targeting big flatheads at night when the big fish are moving into and hunting in the shallows. The best and most successful way to do this is by rigging your bait beneath a large float or bobber.

Start your float rig by clipping a bobber to your line, leaving about a foot of dangling tag end. Next, tie on a barrel swivel and then clip on a small split shot to the line just above the swivel to ensure that your bait will hang vertically in the water. Then tie on a length of line to the other end of the swivel that’s about 6 to 8 inches shorter than the depth of the water you’re fishing and tie on your hook. Once this is done, add your bait by hooking it through the back just below its dorsal fin, being careful not to break its spine, and you’ll be ready to go. It should be noted that you’re going to want to use an extremely large bobber that your live bait can’t pull under but only tow around, ensuring that any bobber downs are only caused by an attacking flathead.

The Toughest Kid on The Block

There’s something about hooking into a big flathead catfish that’s just different. It’s less like fighting a fish and more like getting into a barnstorming, bare-knuckle brawl. You hang on for all your worth as the fish plunges and runs, shaking its head and turning its body into the current with so much power your line almost starts to sing. Then, slowly, like a boxer in the latter rounds, its struggles become weaker, and suddenly, you find yourself pulling a giant, pig-eyed monster from the depths and into your hands.

Landing a big flathead is an accomplishment, one that leaves you changed. For when you’ve defeated the roughest, strongest, and meanest fish in freshwater, you’re the heavyweight champ. A title holder who is ready to step up and take on all other fishy challengers, big or small, to find out how tough they really are.
