Facts about  lifebuoy

A lifebuoy is also called ring buoy, life ring, lifesaver, life donut, life preserver, or lifebelt. It is also known as a “Kisby ring” or “perry buoy. ” The “Kisby ring,” or sometimes “Kisbie ring,” is thought to be named after Thomas Kisbee (1792–1877) who was a British naval officer.

  Frequently asked question

Is your personalized life ring coast guard approved.

Yes, all our life preservers are coast guard approved! U.S. Coast Guard-approved life preservers with lines attached have to be located in easily visible and accessible places on the boat. The number of life rings and the location varies depending on the floating vessel size. Please make sure you read the instructions on the official websites carefully.

What sizes are life preserver rings available in?

Normally, life preserver rings are available in two standard sizes – 24 or 30 inches. We usually offer a 24-inch size.

How long does it take to produce a personalized life ring?

It usually takes around only three days, and the process is speedy and efficient.

How to throw a life preserver ring to the swimmer?

Before you throw the life ring, make sure all the lines are attached to it. Then, throw the life preserver ring past the drowning person, do not forget to hold the line so that you can pull the person to you. As you pull, you need to lean away from the drowning person for better balance. In this way, you can make a life ring save without hitting the victim with the ring.

Life Rings, Float Cushions, Throwable Rescue Devices

Keeping yourself and others safe while boating, on the dock, or at the pool, is crucial. One of the most important pieces of safety equipment to have on hand is a life ring or throwable rescue device. These devices not only provide buoyancy and aid in flotation, but they also serve as a visual marker for rescuers to locate someone in distress. Understanding USCG and local regulations around safety equipment is important too. Life rings made with vinyl coated closed-cell foam or high impact linear low-density polyethylene are durable and can withstand the most severe environments. Proper mounting and storage is vital to ensure quick and easy access in case of an emergency. Remember, investing in these safety measures can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.

Life Rings: Why Simple Isn’t Easy

  • By Mario Vittone
  • Updated: December 17, 2012

Life ring secured to rail

Maybe it’s just a leftover quirk from my old job, but when it comes to safety and survival equipment , I always like to see stuff work. With so much time around things gone wrong, I’ve developed a pragmatic “let’s try it out” approach to everything. One unlikely piece of gear that I’ve seen go very wrong (very often) is life rings. I know, right – how can a circular tube fail? They are the simplest piece of rescue equipment ever made. All they have to do is be round and float, but look around your own marina and you will see them reduced to uselessness all the time.

When you are on your boat next, do me a favor: try it out. Take your Type IV throwable PFD – life ring, horse collar, cushion – and throw it overboard. Time yourself. If it took you more than three to five seconds, things just went wrong. Look at the life ring in the photo above. To effectively use that particular life ring you would have to untie the small line securing it at the rail, and then unravel the polypropylene line before giving it a heave. I’m guessing, but I’m betting that would take longer than five seconds.

Throwable PFDs are about unexpected man-overboard situations where time is everything, especially in winter months . Most people who fall overboard don’t do it on flat calm days, so seas and weather may make the safe and speedy turn to retrieve your crew member more difficult than you imagined.

Set up your life rings (or whatever throwable device you chose) for speed. They should be able to be removed from the cradle or dropped from the rail almost immediately – without any more than a lift or a tug from a single securing line. If they are equipped with a retrieval line, secure them in such a way that they are ready to be used without any extra effort. I’ve seen retrieval lines secured using easily breakable thread in all variations of fancy loops or stars, but my favorite method for keeping these lines straight is the use of throw bags. These neat pouches keep the line from becoming tangled, protect the line from sun damage, and allow the line to pay out without any real intervention from the user.

Whatever your set-up is and whichever throwable PFD you chose to keep aboard, what matters most is that it works when you need it. Having them aboard isn’t enough. You have to spend time actually seeing the things work. They don’t throw themselves and set-up and practice can make the difference between a quick and easy toss, and a fifteen second (too long) struggle to use the simplest piece of safety gear on your boat.

What size boat requires a life ring?

Water activities in a weekly boat rental can be fun and adrenaline-fuelled. From watersports, and sailing to swimming, there are endless avenues for fun in your boat rentals . Yet, when in a vast body of water like the ocean, this may have hazardous consequences for inexperienced ones. This is where a life ring comes in handy.

A life ring is a safety precaution used to rescue people in case they fall overboard into the water. This is especially crucial if you rent a yacht for a week on the open water. It’s essentially a floatation device tasked with the responsibility of keeping someone afloat.

If you are sailing with children who don’t know how to swim, a life ring can be easily deployed to keep them above water until help arrives. So, if you have taken overnight yacht rentals and are wondering whether your boat may require a life ring, read along.

Factors to consider before choosing a life ring

life ring on a sailboat

Whether on a party boat rental or regular daily boat rentals , life rings are essential to boating activities. There are four things to consider for a life ring in your sailboat rentals ; size/quantity, color, durability, and grab ropes.

Size and quantity

The size of the ring and the number of life-preserver rings are crucial factors to consider. The most common size is the optimal marine ring size at 24-inches. Before you rent a sailboat for a week , you should also consider that choosing an oversized ring may not always be favorable.

This is because smaller rings offer greater throwing distances and are also ideal for smaller bodies of water such as lakes and pools. Larger rings are more buoyant but have limited reach and distance. If you are taking your large party boat rentals to rough waters such as the ocean or a bay, a bigger life ring might be the better option.

Durability is essential to consider before purchasing a life ring. Make sure your life ring is durable, and is less prone to wear and tear. Be especially careful when inspecting the material the ring is made of. If it is of a poor standard, the ring will likely not last long.

Color may be something that is usually overlooked for safety equipment, but this is an important factor for life rings. Before you rent a boat with captain, consider the color of your life ring because its brightness influences its visibility. Life rings should be bright and easily visible, making them much easier to locate.

Grab ropes are important to consider when choosing the best life ring for your cheap boat rentals near me. This is because they make it easier for a person overboard to grab hold of the ring after it is thrown out. This is a must have if you plan to sail in open waters like the ocean. Ensure that the ropes are durable, can withstand rough waves, and are weather-resistant.

When all these are ticked off, you are well underway to take a boat rental for a week with the family.

What are the various sizes of Life rings?

life ring on a sailboat

For most people who rent a motor boat , life rings are available to them in two standard sizes – 24” or 30” diameters. These sizes are suitable for most water bodies, such as beaches, pools, lakes, harbors, and more.

For a 24”diameter, its ring usually measures 605mm and weighs 2.7kg. Its light design makes it easy to take across long distances in a long term catamaran rental . This small frame also allows it to cover a large throwing distance of up to 10 – 15 meters.

These features make it ideal for rivers, lakes, and other smaller water bodies. If these are areas you want to rent a boat near me, then this ring size may be ideal.

For the 30” diameter, this larger ring has a more limited throwing range. This is why it is mainly used in piers, harbor walls, and reservoirs. If your yacht rental near me is sailing here, then this is the better choice. The main advantage of this size is that it has improved buoyancy and it can ideally support multiple rescues at one time.

What else do I need to keep in mind?

life ring on a sailboat

A major safety tip to observe in your private boat rentals is to ensure that your life ring has an orange color and features a retro-reflective band to increase its visibility, especially during low light or night time. This is in line with SOLAS 74/83 regulations and safety standards for water equipment.

It should ideally be made up of polyethylene, offering more durability in adverse conditions and lasting longer. You cannot always predict the weather when sailing in your boats for rent by owners.

Storing your life ring is also very important. A robust housing is vital to the durability and usefulness of water safety equipment. They should ideally be made from housing material that is corrosion-resistant, so that they are weather and vandal-resistant.

These are the things to know before sailing in boat rentals from private owners.

Life rings are a crucial part of water safety equipment and sometimes can be the main determinant of survival. Whether you are sailing on private boats for rent or cheap yachts for rent, life rings should be an important part of your itinerary.

This guide has gone through the essential questions and answers to understanding life rings and what to look after when choosing the ideal one.

Life Ring Mounting Ideas

Being the romantic fool that I am, I bought the Admiral a new life ring for the boat for Christmas. I know, I know . . . half you guys reading are embarrassed because you opted for a silk scarf, a diamond necklace or a Lexas. Fools, all! Well, now that I've wooed her sufficiently, I need to mount it appropriately so it's quick to attach and easy to deploy. I plan on using a Velcro strap on the inside of our unused kicker rail mount and include about 75' of thin floating line. Unless the mother-in-law is aboard, it'll be leaded line! (Kidding, I love my mother-in-law to tears) Anybody have any other good ideas? Pics would be nice too. And next Christmas, I won't cry "foul!" if somebody uses my idea.

They make life ring hangers specifically for this purpose. Why improvise?

higgs

I think it important to have one throwable available that is not attached to the boat when deployed. If the MOB misses the horseshoe that would mean he has nothing to hang onto until the boat can make another pass. I think it is easier for the MOB to swim to a stationary horseshoe than to catch on that is moving. I do have a lifesling, but my first thing over would be the unattached throwable.

RECESS

I am pretty sure my unattached throw-able horseshoe life ring would knock someone out cold if it landed on their head. That thing is dense, but floats.

Tim R.

I am think of getting one of these in place of my MOB pole. I also have a horseshoe type and a Lifesling. http://marine.the-justgroup.com/man-overboard-buoy/

My horseshoe has a length of line attached so I figured that's the way its done. Shows what I know. I've looked at the commercially available mounts abd quite frakly, they look like an accident with my wife's name all over it. She skins and bleeds VERYeasily. So I' m trying to stay with soft stuff.

After reading how difficult it would be to actually retrieve an MOB, we opted for a wetsuit and shark repellent.

Stu Jackson

Stu Jackson

It's a good idea to have aline attached to the horseshoe or ring NOT attached to the boat. Makes it easier for the MOB to get to the buoy. When we replaced our old faded horseshoe a few years ago, we (The Admiral) got msart and we keep it down below when not in use. I don't even bother putting it out when I'm out singlehanding. Just use what Don suggested - an existing horseshoe buoy holder on the pushpit.

thinwater

Velcro is poor in the sun. Knots jam in a rush. Try a strope or soft shackle varient (can be made from materials other than Amsteel); easy to release.

Don S/V ILLusion said: $8.80 on Amazon. That must be one hell of an anchor! Click to expand

Perhaps the answer is a CG approved throwable seat cushion or two. Not as good as a horseshoe, but maybe good enough if you are on an inland lake or protected bay. Another idea is to attach it with whipping thread. Use enough that it will stay where you put it, but will break away with a good with good swift tug. I use that system on a boarding ladder that I can access if I'm in the water.

Tom J

We have both the throwable horseshoe and the Lifesling. The horseshoe hangs on a holder on the starboard side of the stern rail, and the Lifesling hangs on the port side of the bimini with the bitter end of its line tied to the stern cleat with a bowline. Both hang outside the cockpit but are easily accessible. I think it is important to secure the line for the Livesling at all times. Things happen too quickly in a real MOB situation to take the time to secure lines, etc.

FlorDLuna

Here's my question: if use a throwable untethered horseshoe, and a MOB pole, do I tether the MOB pole to the horseshoe even though neither is tethered to the boat? And for night sailing, if I add a water activated floating strobe, to I also tether that to the horseshoe? Toss all three overboard together?

An intoxicated man wielding a .22 rifle was arrested Tuesday for allegedly shooting at a pair of anglers who were fishing from a boat on a Missouri lake. The two fishermen told authorities the man, later identified as Levi James Coates, yelled at them for coming too close to his dock and then took aim and fired his rifle in their direction. Coats was arrested and charged with multiple felonies, according to court documents filed in Camden County and obtained by Outdoor Life .

The incident occurred Tuesday on Lake of the Ozarks near the village of Sunrise Beach. The Camden County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 9:04 p.m. from one of the anglers on the boat, who reported that they’d already been threatened by the man. The anglers later told a deputy that the man fired a shot at them while they were waiting on hold for the 911 operator.

“[We] were fishing in the cove for catfish when a man across the cove started yelling and threatening to shoot us if we got any closer to his dock,” one of the victims told Camden County Sheriff’s deputy David Shoemaker, court documents show. “At one point I looked back over at the house to see a man aiming a gun, located between the house and car. After seeing this, [the other angler] and I both crouched down behind the walls of the boat. Minutes later a shot was fired while [the other angler] was on hold with Camden County.”

Shoemaker responded to the scene at 9:19 p.m. to find Coats with a .22-caliber rifle next to him. Coats appeared to be camping outside the residence with a tent and a campfire. During questioning, Coats admitted to shooting into the water but claimed he didn’t see any boats in the area.

“[Mr. Coats] claimed that he was shooting to ‘scare away’ raccoons so they would not enter his tent,” Shoemaker’s statement reads. “Mr. Coats was asked why he did not shoot the raccoons instead and he stated he could not see the raccoons.”

Coats was then booked in the Camden County jail, where he took a preliminary breathalyzer test that came back positive for intoxicants. He also admitted that he had been drinking that evening. Coats now faces four felony charges , including unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, and two counts of first degree attempted assault. He has entered a plea of not guilty and has requested public defender services. His bond was set at $100,000. Court documents also show that in 2022, Coats pleaded guilty to indecent exposure in Texas County, Missouri, and was fined $100.

This Meadowlands boat tour is a 'wow factory,' with great views of NJ marsh wildlife

3-minute read.

Showing people what she called the “wow factory” — the natural wonders that exist in New Jersey's own backyard — is what Gabrielle Bennett-Meany and her colleagues at the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority hope to do.

Bennett-Meany serves as the authority's manager of parks, trails and open space and is one of the guides for its free boat tours, which offer visitors close-up access to the Meadowlands' natural wonders.

“When you’re on the highway, sometimes you don’t even know what’s down here,” Bennett-Meany said. “They say, ‘This is amazing. Who knew? I drive over Route 3 every day,’ or ‘I drive on the turnpike every day.’”

With 30 years’ experience in the Meadowlands, she brings an enthusiasm and insight to the experience, providing context about the region as well as the wildlife glimpsed along the way.

When do the Meadowlands tours run?

The authority runs tours weekly throughout the spring and summer, and those looking for a last dose of sunshine can still find a chance through the end of September. There are also walking trails in the Meadowlands region that are open all year round for visitors.

But the boats may be the crown jewel of the operation.

Boat tours that can accommodate about 14 people are led by veteran guides who bring decades of experience studying the wildlife and ecosystem of a vast and still largely overlooked area.

Bennett-Meany called the region the “best-kept secret” and said sometimes that’s for the best, because the makeup of the riverbed can be tricky to navigate, especially for people without experience.

The return of the osprey and the presence of bald eagles have garnered attention in the past, but the difference between hearing a story and seeing it in person can be astounding. And then there’s the peregrine falcon. The fastest animal on the planet — with flight speeds topping 200 miles per hour — can be found nestled into the underside of a bridge along Route 3.

Things like that provide context to visitors.

The marshlands are home to plenty of ducks and seagulls that can be found throughout the region, but watching a flock of cormorants take flight as the boat comes into the dock is a difference maker. It’s something unique — but with American Dream and MetLife Stadium, soon to host the 2026 World Cup, still in view, it's quintessentially Jersey.

The boat tours run along the Hackensack River and into the nearby tributaries and marshes, depending on tides and wildlife.

Bennett-Meany likes to start each tour with a little context about the river and how it works, running from the mountains of upstate New York into New Jersey before meeting the Passaic River and running into the Newark Bay. As a tidal river, it sees fluctuations in the water level, which the tours take into account.

“People live in our communities and are sort of separated from our natural areas, but once we begin to realize that our community is part of these natural areas,” she said, “it makes us think about what we’re doing in our hometown, how we’re connected to the environment and why many, many of these environments are very important.”

From where do the Meadowlands tour boats launch?

Boats launch from River Barge Park Marina in Carlstadt and venture up and down the river for about two hours. The marina’s manager, Angelo Urato, has watched the agency and the area evolve during 40 years of service.

He said that at low tide, the animals tend to be more active and visitors have a better shot at seeing a variety of species.

Bennett-Meany said having a harbor seal turn up about a decade ago was exciting, but the highlight for her has been the return of the ospreys.

She explained that decades ago, before the Clean Water Act set parameters on pollution, it was common to dump waste in the river, and the water quality was poor.

But wetlands protection efforts led to the rebirth of the area, and as species of fish and birds started to come back, so did the bigger birds that feed on them.

Enter the osprey. About 15 years ago, an osprey turned up. It nested and had young but ultimately failed. A year or two later, they came back and nested, and now they are a constant.

“It’s my favorite resurgence story,” she said.

Although the boating season is coming to an end, the Meadowlands Birding Festival will take place on Oct. 6 and will feature bird walks, talks and other activities at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst.
