Designing a dream: Burger Boat Company's record-setting commission
MANITOWOC (NBC 26) — Burger Boat Company in Manitowoc is making its largest commissions yet: two 180-foot motor yachts.
“The owner came to us with a design brief, and what you see is basically that design brief come to life," said Ron Cleveringa, vice president of sales and marketing at the company.
Cleveringa's been in the business for 39 years, and Burger Boat Company has been around for over four times longer — operating since 1863.
In all of those years, Burger has built many ships, at times even making them for major U.S. wars. While some of those commercial builds have been larger than the current project, no custom commission has reached this size.
One of the 180-foot motor yachts, currently called Hull 514 by the Burger Boat crew, is already purchased and has been given an official name by its undisclosed owner. It was just released to the public on Wednesday, but it's been under construction for 18 months.
Its sister has not been built, but work on it will soon begin.
The yachts have many impressive technical details, including nine generators that come online as needed. a firs-of-its kind system to be installed on a yacht of its size. The yachts will also be prepared for all kinds of conditions, making them capable of cruising the world, including through frigid ice water.
Cleveringa said that even though the technical aspects of the design are indeed incredibly impressive, it isn't the parts, but the whole that makes it so great.
“The neatest feature of this yacht is the yacht itself, and the fact that the owner had trust in Burger to build his dream. That’s exciting. And it does put a lot of people to work with very good jobs right here in Manitowoc," Cleveringa said.
The sister yacht has not yet been purchased.

Burger Boat building 180' yacht on spec
# Industry News
Burger Boat Co. has announced that the superstructure has been set in place on the first of two 180’ Motor Yachts.
The two Burger 180’ Motor Yachts are currently under construction at Burger’s shipyard in Manitowoc, Wis. While the first is sold, the second is available for sale, providing its new owner an opportunity to build their new yacht in the U.S. and add their custom touches to its design, shipyard officials said.
The Burger 180 Motor Yacht features expansive interior and exterior spaces for its owner and guests, while its mechanical features are intended to make the cruising experience even more comfortable. In addition, each yacht has been designed for full handicapped accessibility, including its large elevator, providing all guests easy access to each of its four decks.
Boarding the yacht from the stern mounted passerelle, guests are greeted on the aft deck, which provides direct access to the main salon, tender bay, and via a circular stairway, the aft bridge deck. Additionally, easy access to the swim platform is provided via the tender bay.
The main salon is built for more formal entertaining and dining experiences. Large windows are designed to provide a feeling of openness while enjoying time with friends and family.
Forward on the main deck is a full beam owner’s suite with an adjoining private office. Guest accommodations for up to 10 guests in four staterooms, with large windows to bring in natural light and scenic views, are situated on the lower deck. The staterooms are designed to easily convert into two sets of family suites.
The skylounge offers a large bar and entertainment area for relaxation with friends and family and opens to the aft bridge deck area for outdoor dining, entertaining, or relaxation. Forward on the bridge deck are the pilothouse, yacht’s office, and captain’s stateroom.
For those who wish to take in the action and view the journey while outdoors, a large circular seating area is situated forward of the pilothouse.
The sundeck offers a number of areas for outdoor enjoyment. Situated all the way forward are two raised seating areas, one each port and starboard, and three individual, forward-looking chairs providing vistas of the surroundings.
The professional galley is designed for the most demanding needs and long-range cruising. It features commercial equipment and includes a large walk-in refrigerator, walk-in freezer, walk-in pantry, and direct access to the skylounge service pantry.
The crew accommodations are configured for up to 13 and are designed to provide private staterooms for the yacht’s captain, chief officer, chief engineer, chief stewardess, and chef. In addition, a large lounge and relaxation area, with large windows, is provided for crew comfort.
Stowed in the tender bay is the yacht’s 37' tender, which is launched and retrieved via a custom hydraulic “stinger” system. With this system, the tender is safely stowed while underway, thus eliminating the need for towing.
Powered by twin Caterpillar 3512C IMO Tier II engines, the Burger 180’ Motor Yacht has a range of 4,000 nautical miles at 11 knots.
Designed with entertainment, technological advances, reliability, and worldwide cruising with family and friends in mind, the Burger 180’ Motor Yacht offers many mechanical firsts in yachting. The electrical generation system has been developed to ensure adequate power in all situations. With nine Kohler 40-kW generators installed in parallel, the yacht’s power generation system offers maximum efficiency and redundancy while ensuring that no generator ever runs underloaded.
Naiad Dynamics Four Fin, Zero Speed Stabilization System is installed to provide maximum comfort at sea.

Who was onboard tech mogul Mike Lynch's Bayesian yacht?
Topic: Disasters, Accidents and Emergency Incidents
Six people are missing, including a man dubbed the British Bill Gates, after a luxury yacht sank off the Sicilian coast.
British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch — freshly acquitted from a decade-long trial — had invited his work colleagues aboard a trip through the Mediterranean coast when a freak storm saw the yacht sink within moments.
Fifteen people escaped from the sinking vessel. The search for the missing continues.
Here's what we know so far:
What happened?
The Italian coastguard said the yacht — the Bayesian — was anchored off the shore of port city Porticello, near the Sicilian capital Palermo, when it was hit by bad weather sometime after 4am on Monday, local time.
Eyewitnesses said it vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn.
Managers of the sailing vessel Bayesian, Camper & Nicholsons, confirmed to the ABC that the Bayesian encountered severe weather and subsequently sank.
"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew," they said.
"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coastguard official told Reuters.
Sicily's civil protection agency head, Salvo Cocina, said a waterspout — a tornado over the water — could have struck the yacht.
"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Mr Cocina added.
Storms and heavy rainfall had swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, lifting the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea to record levels and raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts told Reuters.
"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," meteorologist Luca Mercalli said.

Captain Karsten Borner of the Sir Robert Baden Powell vessel told journalists he noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm, but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realised the ship had simply disappeared.
Mr Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.
Search crews, including helicopters and divers, are continuing to search the wreckage, lying at a depth of 49 metres.
Specialist divers reached the ship on Monday but access was limited due to objects in the way, the fire brigade said.
The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment.
The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families".
Sicilian prosecutors have also opened an investigation into the event.
Who is missing?
Lawyer Chris Morvillo (left), entrepreneur Mike Lynch, and Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer are among the missing.
There were 12 passengers and 10 crew members aboard the yacht.
Mr Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries, including Britain, the United States, Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.
Of the 22, one man is confirmed dead and another six people are still missing.
They are believed to be inside the hull, fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari said.
Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman who said he responded to a flare from the vessel but found it sunk, said he stayed at the site for three hours without finding anyone.
"I think they are inside, all the missing people," he said.
Rescue teams recovered the body of the yacht's onboard chef on Monday, identified as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.
The still missing people include:
- Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
- Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of global financial services company Morgan Stanley International
- Chris Morvillo , a lawyer at the British multinational law firm Clifford Chance. He worked on Mr Lynch's lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard
- The identities of the remaining two missing are still unconfirmed
Who was rescued?
Fifteen people escaped from the sinking ship.
Eight have been hospitalised and others were taken to a nearby hotel.
Charlotte Golunski was among those rescued, recalling the harrowing moments she held her child Sofia above the waves. ( Supplied: Facebook )
Among those rescued were:
- Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was the owner of the yacht
- Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter, Sofia. Ms Golunski is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm, Invoke Capital. She says she momentarily lost hold of Sofia in the water but managed to hold her up above the waves until the lifeboat was inflated
- Ms Golunski's husband James Emslie
- New Zealand captain of the yacht James Catfield. He told Italian newspaper La Repubblica the crew didn't see the storm coming
- A lone Dutch citizen was identified by the Dutch foreign ministry as being rescued, but was not identified
Who is Mike Lynch?
Mr Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was recently freed from a Silicon Valley lawsuit that tarnished his legacy.
The 59-year-old Cambridge-educated mathematician created Autonomy , a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.
He received the OBE for his innovation in 2006.
He then sold the software to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $US11 billion ($16 billion) in 2011, with Mr Lynch personally netting $US800 million.
HP valued Autonomy at $US46 billion ($68 billion) in the months leading up to the deal.

But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of forging the software's financial records to make the sale.
As part of a decades-long legal battle against HP, Mr Lynch was extradited to the UK on criminal fraud charges.
He steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling.
He was eventually cleared of all charges in June this year.
Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a bill from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $US4 billion.
Following the San Francisco trial, Mr Lynch said he would return to the UK and do what he loved most: "[being with] my family and innovating in my field."
The holiday appeared to be something of a celebration after Mr Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal.
This picture shows the rescue operations off the Sicilian coast. ( AP: Italian Coast Guard )
In a separate act of tragedy, Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died on Monday, after a road accident left him critically injured.
Mr Chamberlain — Autonomy's former vice-president of finance alongside Mr Lynch — was hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning and had been placed on life support.
What is the Bayesian?
The luxury yacht is 56m long sailboat, with a 75m mast labelled as the tallest aluminium mast in the world.
It was previously named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag.
The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. It was last refitted in 2020.
Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $AU 321,000) a week.
This picture taken on Sunday shows the Bayesian (left) and the Duch sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell anchored off the coast line. ( AP: Fabio La Bianca/Baia Santa Nicolicchia )
The ship also won a string of awards for its design.
Ms Golunski said the yacht had travelled through the Aeolian Islands, Milazzo and Cefalù before sinking.
It is likely the yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.

The chief executive of a firm which makes and sells yachts like the Bayesian believes the sinking may have been due to a series of human mistakes.
Giovanni Constantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, told Italian media that the storm on Monday had been expected.
"The ship sank because it took on water. From where? Investigators will have to say," he told television news programme TG1.
Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the sinking and witnesses have begun to be questioned, including the vessel's captain James Cutfield.
No official cause for the disaster has yet been given.
Mr Constantino told Sky News there were no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian and vessels like the stricken superyacht were "unsinkable"...
The recovery operation will have taken a huge mental and physical toll on the divers, a former Royal Navy submarine captain has said.
Those involved in salvaging bodies of the victims from the wreckage will have undergone "huge amounts of psychological stress", Ryan Ramsey told Sky News.
"It's been exceptionally stressful for them both mentally and physically," he said.
"If you take into account the pressures that they're operating under, those are considerable.
"It's dark. It's a platform that they've never been inside before, and they're having to recover bodies. That's huge amounts of psychological stress for those for those divers."
Mr Ramsay said that as well as the mental impact, the process of diving to the wreck and coming to surface repeatedly will have been "exceptionally tiring for them".
"The transit from the surface to 50m down takes a considerable amount of time. Then, of course... you've only got a small window. You want to achieve as much as you possibly can in that window. That creates stress."
A friend of Mike Lynch says his death is "unbelievably tragic" and his friends and family had been "hoping for a miracle".
Brent Hoberman tells Sky News the tycoon was an "inspiring figure" in the tech community and should be remembered for his achievements.
"We were all hoping for a miracle - we knew it was unlikely but you still hold out hope," he says.
"It's just so unbelievably tragic for him to go through what he went through over the last 12 years, defending his name and not really living a full life, to now for his death to be confirmed is obviously incredibly sad."
Mr Hoberman says Mr Lynch showed "courage" and "resilience" as he faced trial for fraud in the US before being acquitted just two months ago.
He says it "must be unbearable" for his family to go from "elation" then to "tragedy" now.
He adds that he hopes Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares, who survived the sinking "has close friends around her giving her courage and strength".
The identification of five more victims of the yacht disaster means the search has "almost certainly" moved to a recovery mission for Hannah Lynch, the daughter of Mike Lynch, says our correspondent Ashna Hurynag , who is in Sicily.
After a fifth body was brought to shore this morning, it appears "we're entering into the inevitable end to this chapter", she says.
"By Monday night there were fears, but very much hopes were alive. Come yesterday, I think once the retrieval of some of those people on board started to happen... it's fair to say that the chances of survival were all but gone."
Hurynag says Italian authorities are "doing their best to support the families" and offering support.
The process to retrieve the bodies has also been "as modest and as respectful as it's able to be", she adds.
The bodies of five people found after the superyacht sinking have been identified by the Italian coastguard.
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is among the dead.
Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo have also been identified.
Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch remains unaccounted for.
Search and rescue teams have been looking this week for six people who were unaccounted for after the Bayesian superyacht sunk on Monday.
Here's a reminder of who they are:
- UK technology tycoon Mike Lynch , co-founder of the firm Autonomy and dubbed the "British Bill Gates"
- His daughter, Hannah Lynch , an 18-year-old student
- Jonathan Bloomer , the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International
- His wife Judy Bloomer
- Chris Morvillo, a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance
- His wife Neda Morvillo, a jewellery designer
Italian authorities have not yet identified the five bodies recovered from the shipwreck, which brought the total number of victims to six.
The body of on-board chef Recaldo Thomas was recovered at the scene of the sinking on Monday.
As we reported in our previous post, divers in Sicily have recovered a fifth body from the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht.
Identities of the recovered bodies have not yet been confirmed by authorities.
A fifth body has been recovered from the wreck of the yacht, the civil protection authority has told Sky News.
This brings the total number of confirmed deaths to six, after the body of chef Recaldo Thomas was found on the day of the sinking.
A fire service boat with flashing blue lights returned with a blue body bag to Porticello at just after 8.45am local time.
The search operation to find the missing has been plagued with difficulties.
Conditions underwater have been described as "complex" and "prohibitive".
Here, Sky News looks at the factors that have made the search and rescue operation so difficult...
An Italian doctor has shared more details of a British mother's fight to keep her one-year-old daughter alive as the yacht capsized.
Charlotte Emsley, who held her baby above the waves, woke up in the water after falling asleep on the deck of the Bayesian, said Dr Domenico Cipolla, of Di Cristina Children's Hospital in Palermo, Sicily.
"She told me that two minutes after falling asleep with her baby they were in the water, she did not understand how this happened, it went dark.
"Her partner was not with her, he was in another room."
Dr Cipolla said mother and child were physically in "a good condition" when they went to a hotel on Tuesday, but both parents were "so shaken by what has happened, it was a tragedy for them".
"She sometimes cried for her friends in the hospital."

How did the superyacht Bayesian sink? Experts say weather was just one factor
Divers searching for 6 missing people locate 5 bodies inside wrecked yacht's hull.
Social Sharing
A complicated search effort is underway deep beneath the surface of the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Italy, where a superyacht sank early Monday during a fierce storm.
Dive crews are attempting to enter the wreck of the Bayesian, a 56-metre long British-flagged luxury vessel, which is sitting in some 50 metres of water near the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello.
Fifteen of the 22 passengers and crew members on board were rescued. Divers searching for six people considered missing, including British businessman Mike Lynch, located five bodies inside the yacht's hull on Wednesday, and retrieved four of them from the water.
Searchers previously recovered the body of Recaldo Thomas, the ship's Canadian-Antiguan cook, in the water not far from where the Bayesian sank.

Questions have emerged about why a boat designed to handle severe weather sank so rapidly and whether or not some of its features could've been a factor in its demise. Maritime experts say investigations may, in time, reveal what led to the disaster.
"There needs to be an investigation as to why this happened, what went wrong and, you know, how to prevent it in the future cases," said Simon Boxall, an oceanographer and senior lecturer at the University of Southampton in England.
Canadian dead, others missing after superyacht sinks near Sicily
How did the bayesian sink so quickly.
Grainy footage from closed-circuit cameras on the shore broadcast on the website of the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper showed the Bayesian's majestic mast just before it disappeared.
Karsten Borner, captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which rescued the survivors who managed to get into a lifeboat, told The Associated Press he was close enough to be able to see the Bayesian as the storm came in.
"A moment later, she was gone," he said.
The survivors told the rescuers they went flat on the water "and were sunk in two minutes."
Boxall said vessels rely on being able to steer and navigate stormy seas, but the Bayesian was anchored and stationary, which likely made it more vulnerable to the storm and, potentially, a waterspout , or mini tornado that creates a whirlwind over the surface of the sea.
He said it was also dark, meaning "you wouldn't see this sort of very unique event coming towards you."
CCTV footage shows yacht Bayesian as deadly storm strikes
"It's a freak of nature," Boxall said. "I think the fact that so many have survived, so far, is probably a miracle."
Tom Sharpe, a retired Royal Navy commander and defence commentator, told CBC News the weather was likely not the only issue.
He says it's rare that a weather event like this takes down a boat.
"There's nearly always a sequence [of events]," he said in an interview from Guildford, England, explaining that everything from safety protocols to the culture on board the vessel needs to be taken into account.
Was the boat's design part of the problem?
The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian luxury yacht maker Perini Navi.
Andrea Ratti, a nautical design professor at Milan Polytechnic, told Reuters that a boat the size of the Bayesian could only sink so rapidly by taking on a huge amount of water.
He suggested that one or more portholes, windows or other openings may have been broken or smashed open by the waterspout, letting in water. There has also been media speculation that a major hatch might have been inadvertently left open.
Reports have also highlighted that the Bayesian featured a 72-metre mast — one of the tallest in the world.
Ratti said an unusually tall mast is not by itself an element of vulnerability in a storm.
A second expert, structural engineer Filippo Mattioni, was also skeptical about the suggestion the boat may have sunk due to a broken mast, which likely would have caused major damage smashing against the hull.
Fire department diver Marco Tilotta told the newspaper Il Messaggero that the wreck was "apparently intact," with "no gashes, no signs of impact." However, only half of the hull is visible to divers.
The Bayesian also had a retractable keel — the fin-like structure under the hull that helps stabilize boats and acts as a counterweight to the mast.
Both Ratti and Mattioni wondered if the yacht had been anchored with the keel up, reducing the vessel's depth under water and making it less stable. Ratti said strong winds might have caused the boat to start oscillating wildly, "like a pendulum," putting exceptional strain on the mast.
Sharpe pointed out that a mast the size of the Bayesian's is designed for a massive sail, and without that sail raised and catching the wind, the gusts likely would've had a negligible impact on the aluminum pole.
- What we know about the capsized superyacht off the Sicilian coast
He instead suggested the anchor may have played a pivotal role.
"My kind of working assumption is that she was probably a bit further in at anchor, and it's very likely, in these sort of conditions, that her anchor dragged," he said.
In such a situation, he said, a crew is better off steering toward the anchor to stabilize the vessel or raising the anchor and heading out to sea to ride out the storm.
"They might have got caught in that middle ground where they're not on a particularly good anchorage, but the anchor is now controlling the bow of the ship."
Sicily superyacht rescue: What divers are up against | About That
What caused the extreme weather.
Although Sharpe says the weather is unlikely the sole cause of the sinking, he notes the Mediterranean isn't the calm sea often pictured in travel brochures.
"It can get pretty nasty," he said.
The type of storm that struck Monday is fuelled by warm water and the Mediterranean is warmer than ever, said Boxall, noting there's been about a three and a half degree increase in the 20-year average temperature.
'The ship behind us was gone,' says captain who rescued yacht passengers
Climatologists say global warming is making such violent and unexpected tempests more frequent.
Luca Mercalli, president of Italy's meteorological society, said the sea surface temperature around Sicily in the days leading up to the shipwreck was about 30 C.
"This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," he told Reuters.

For those of you making the trip to Veliky Novgorod Region, here is a list of unmissable activities and places of interest to really get you acquainted with the area and its history.
1. Learn the history of the Russian state in Veliky Novgorod
Of course, this city is unmissable; being the historical center of Russian statehood with the most ancient cathedral in the country, Sophia Cathedral, erected more than one thousand years ago, is a place of power for the whole of Russia. The city was the first-ever Russian settlement straddling both sides of a river (Volkhov), with the imposing Kremlin on one side, and medieval churches and buildings in the historic market district on the other.
Veliky Novgorod Kremlin
You can spice up the historical tour with various custom ones available, including the ancient cemetery at night or an alco-tour of the city (where you get to try local food and drink). For more information on the city excursions, you can go here .
2. Explore traditional folk craft at the workshop in Kresttsy settlement
Krestetsky stitching is a traditional Russian pattern - a folk craft that was born and developed in this area since the 1860-s. In Soviet times a small factory producing original unique linen products was built here. During Perestroika it was nearly closed due to the catastrophic economic crisis in the country. The risk for the Krestetsky stitch being completely forgotten was quite real. It is now a private factory and shop with guided tours.
NOVGOROD REGION, RUSSIA - JANUARY 24, 2019: Linen products of the Kresttsy Stitch clothing factory reviving and implementing the Kresttsy stitchery, a traditional local embroidery technique dating from the 1860s, in the village of Kresttsy, Novgorod Region
The pattern is very beautiful and difficult to master, so the possibility to observe the birth of a masterpiece is quite unique. Head over to the factory website for more details.
3. Meet the old believers in the village of Lyakova
Russia’s so-called ‘old believers’ did not accept the reformation of Orthodox Christianity in Russia in the 17th century, choosing instead to keep the old traditions in church services and rites, in defiance of the state’s persecution, lasting centuries. Old believers are divided into two groups, those who accept the church hierarchy and those who do not accept priests at all, pray in their own houses, and are governed by the community leaders. At this time there are about one million old believers scattered around the country with no official statistics to confirm that figure.
The old believers of Lyakova village will gladly welcome you in the old traditional peasant’s house, explaining how it was organized, and how life, in general, looked in the distant peasant past. This immersion is accompanied by a traditional dinner with borsch, salo (pork scratchings) and tea brewed in a traditional samovar. Book your ticket here .
4. Take the eco-trail at the Valdai national park
This national park is one of the largest specially protected natural areas in the European part of Russia. Russian president Vladimir Putin has one of his ‘datchas’ here. The territory of the park that covers an area of 159 thousand hectares includes several lakes (Borovno, Valdai, Velje, Seliger) as well as rare animals and plants.
Many nature lovers come here to hike, swim in the lakes and camp. This year the big eco-trail was opened. If you enjoy hiking, you can walk all 59 kilometers in five days, starting from the town of Valdai and covering around 12 kilometers a day. On the way, you will have all the facilities needed for camping and spending time in nature, from toilets to camping equipment and various amenities. Visit the park’s website for more info.
5. Visit the Valday Iversky Monastery
Located on an island 10 kilometers from the town of Valday, this monastery appears to be floating on the lake, when you look at it from a distance.
This is a male Orthodox monastery established in 1653. It was one of the three monasteries founded by the Patriarch Nikon (his reformation of the Orthodox Church in Russia and its unification with the Greek Orthodox church caused the split between ‘old’ and ‘new’ believers). The icon of the Mother of God – Iverskaya – is the treasure of the monastery and the reason for the active pilgrimage to this place.
6. Ring the bells at the Valday Museum of Bells
The region of Novgorod was the center of Russian statehood under the rule of the Rurikovich dynasty. After the collapse of Kievan Rus’, the region was an autonomous Russian state with a republican form of government, the symbol of which was a big Bell that every citizen could ring in order to gather the townspeople for a vote or resolve a community issue. So it is not by accident that the first-ever Museum of Bells in Russia was opened here.
Valday Museum of Bells
If you manage to get Nadezhda Yakovleva for a guide, you are guaranteed a one-person performance along with your historical facts, it’s fascinating and great fun as well.
7. Immerse yourself in 10th-century life at the settlement in Lyubytino village
This village of ancient Slavs has been restored in order to give tourists the impression of life centuries ago. Different types of Russian wooden cottages (izba) are represented here, as well as utility buildings and the ancient burial mounds, used by Slavs for burial rites.
Lyubytino is an urban locality (a work settlement) and the administrative center of Lyubytinsky District of Novgorod Oblast, Russia, located on the Msta River. Municipally, it serves as the administrative center of Lyubytinskoye Urban Settlement
For those seeking total immersion, there is the possibility of getting dressed in the traditional clothing of the time and have a photo session.
8. Visit the museum of local lore in the town of Borovichi
This is one of the oldest museums in the region, established in 1918, and located in a 19th century stone house with a mezzanine. It is devoted to the history of the region from the Stone Age to the Revolution of 1917.
By the end of the 19th century, Borovichi became an industrial city that attained fame in Europe due to the first international agricultural handicraft and industrial exhibition held here, which was established under the auspices of the Prince of Oldenburg, who underlined the importance of this region between the two Russian capitals. France then presented half of the items at the exhibition.
The region is also known for a unique material produced here: Franco-Russian pyro-granite plants of Prince Golitsyn were located in Borovichi, and the recipe for producing it remains secret to this day. This material got a large silver medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889.
We highly recommend that you take a guide here, as there are many activities including role play and various fun games, as well as just beautiful stories told during it. Find out more here .
