I wanted to organise something for my husband's 50th later in August but then we decided to go sooner, impromptu, as the weather in London is simply calling for a boat trip! Crew and Captain were very friendly and professional, yet at a distance as one expects from a 5-star service on a yacht. As an extra we had an amazing meal prepared from scratch on board by one of Gaucho restaurants top Chefs - very nice day which turned into a magical evening!

This is a terrific charter. A perfect boat for sightseeing (I'd say 5 is about the max unless you have kids) and a well trained, very professional crew to ensure you have an amazing time on the water. Highly recommend!

Great thing to do in London!! Especially in a pandemic or if you want privacy and space from people but want to see things...

Chug Along Regent’s Canal On Your Very Own Picnic Boat

GoBoat lets you steer your very own motor boat along London’s canals.

Until now, take a boat trip through Little Venice required either joining one of those public cruises or, extravagantly, hiring a whole barge. But now, you can finally be the skipper of your own destiny, with these eight-person motorboats from GoBoat – and we’ve got you some tickets right here .

Based in Paddington’s Merchant Square, GoBoat lets you hire your own personal canal cruiser, for adventures along London’s canals. Cruising along at the sedate speed of 4mph, the boats are powered by an electric motor and come equipped with a table for picnics on the water.

First-time captains needn’t be afraid of getting their sea legs wet, because you’ll be given training upon arrival to avoid any Titanic-sized disasters. Once underway, you can cruise up to Little Venice, and then either head west to Kensal Rise or east to Camden Town (presumably to pay us a visit!).

Hire periods can be as brief as one hour, but we’d recommend at least two for a relaxed jaunt. There’s space for up to eight people on your noble vessel, and children and dogs are also welcome on-board. You’re encouraged to enjoy a picnic on the water, though there are some modest limits on the amount of grog you’re allowed to bring aboard – and the captain is expected to stay sober, naturally. Usual decorum applies, even here on the high seas of north London!

London Heathrow Airport is roughly 17 km from Penton Hook Marina.

Shepperton Marina: Can accommodate over 400 boats with electricity and water. The marina is open 7 days a week and has closed-circuit surveillance. There are full chandlery and marine stores and large servicing and repair workshops. The marina has ample car parking and is only 30 minutes from London by road. Overall, a top marina for cruising the Thames with a variety of sailing choices.

The London Heathrow Airport is 5.2 miles/8.4 kilometers from Shepperton Marina. Next is London Gatwick Airport, which is 20 miles away/ 33 kilometers. The London City Airport is roughly 23 miles/ 37 kilometers away.

Abingdon Marina: A picturesque marina that can accommodate cruisers, narrowboats, and barges. The marina can withstand severe weather conditions, keeping the boat safe during flood conditions. Water and electricity are available to all moorings. There is a secure compound for parking your car, as well as a wealth of pubs and restaurants nearby.

The closest airport is London Heathrow, which is 38 miles away from Abingdon. Next is London Luton Airport, which is roughly 42 miles away.

Tips for cruising the River Thames:

A rigorous lookout should be maintained when entering the river.

A vessel must not cross or enter a fairway when other vessels are coming the other way, and if they do, stick to the right.

Navigational lights are operational. Also watch out for white flashing lights on the bridges and prevent using that arch as this often means a large craft is approaching.

Cruise at a safe speed to avoid collisions.

And while  day trips  and  seaside jaunts  are great for some light relief from the heat, sometimes city responsibilities mean escaping Zone 6 just isn’t possible. If you need to swap your stuffy flat for cooler climes, but only have a few hours to spare, a boat trip might be just what you need.

Luckily London is full of rivers, lakes, ponds and canals to pedal across, row down or canoe around, and we’re blessed with loads of great places to hire boats, too. Here’s our guide to the best boating spots in the city to help you cool down. Just try not to fall in!

Hire boats and pedalos in London

1.  boating on the serpentine.

Hyde Park is home to London's oldest boating lake, and visitors can take out a pedalo or rowing boat to admire the many interesting waterfowl that call it home (as well as the brave swimmers in the unheated Serpentine Lido). The boats get very popular in good weather, especially at weekends, but the lake's spacious so once you're out there you should find plenty of room to sail.

Price : £12 per adult per hour (£10 for half an hour). Open daily 10am-6pm April-May; 10am-7pm June-August; 10am-8pm June-August; 10am-7pm; 10am-dusk October-March.  

2.  Regent’s Park Boating Lake

You can hire a rowing boat or pedalo on the water in Regent's Park, which is surrounded by beautiful greenery. Kids can pedal around their own mini-lake, while grown-ups might attempt a spot of romancing – this is the lake in which Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson frolicked in classic British romance ‘Brief Encounter’.

Price : £10.50 per adult per hour. Open daily from 10am weekdays and 11am on weekends, closing at 6pm April-May; 7pm June-September; dusk in October.

3.  Lee Valley Boat Centre

This is your destination if you want a comprehensive choice of vessels to hire. There are pedalos, electric boats (with steering wheel) and traditional rowing boats available to hire on an hourly and half-hourly basis. 

Price :From £14 per boat per hour.

Open daily 10am-6pm, opening times can vary. Opening dates this year run from April 8-October 22. 

4.  Crystal Palace Park Boating Lake

Not much is going to make you pedal faster than realising you're floating past a load of dinosaurs. Crystal Palace Park's ancient inhabitants have been on the banks of its lake since the 1850s, and visitors can hire a pedalo to pootle past them, pretending they're in a slo-mo, waterborne scene from 'Jurassic Park'.

Price :£5 per pedalo, per adult. Cash only. Open 10.30am-5pm weekends, bank holidays and school holidays from Easter until October. 

5.  Victoria Park Boating Lake

• Victoria Park

East London's vast and lovely Victoria Park boasts a huge lake with three islands (one of which can be accessed by footbridge) to row or pedal past. There's also a beautiful fountain, which will need avoiding if you're not in the mood to get drenched. The nearby Pavilion Café sells refreshments to perk you up afterwards.

Price :£10 per boat per half hour.  Open daily. 12pm-5pm Mon-Fri, 12-6 Sun. Opens each year roughly from Easter-October 31.

6.  Moo Canoes

Kayak down the Thames in a bovine boat as part of this alternative sightseeing tour. A two-man vessel decorated with a black and white cow print will be your mode of transport. There are several alternatives but 'Greenwich Meal Time' runs from Limehouse Basin to the Royal Naval College at Greenwich.

There you'll disembark and dine in a riverside restaurant, before sailing back via the Millennium Dome. The trip is suitable for beginners and no kayaking experience is necessary.

Price : From £26 per tandem kayak for the first hour. Book in advance. Open Sat and Sun 10am-5pm April-October. 

7.  Greenwich Park Boating Lake

There's nowhere to hide on Greenwich Park's little lake, so if you'd rather your mates didn't see you steering a pedalo (or rowing boat) like it's a bumper car you might like to sail elsewhere. The plus side to this is that any landlubbers can wave and take photos from the banks while you're on board.

Price : £4 per adult per half hour. Open 10am-5pm weekends, from April-October. 

8.  Dulwich Park Boating Lake

Take a serene trip across Dulwich Park's lake in one of its green pedalos or rowing boats and enjoy views of the nearby pavilion café while you float.

Price : £4 per adult per half hour. Cash only. Open 10am-5pm on weekends, bank holidays and school holidays from April-October. 

9.  Hollow Ponds

A true escape from tarmac and concrete, Epping Forest's Hollow Ponds are a beautiful stretch of water offering you the space to row your own adventure. Apart from the boathouse, Lakeside Diner and other facilities there's hardly a building to be seen, and friendly staff are on hand to instruct beginners.

Price : £15 per boat per hour (£10 for a half hour). Open daily 10am-8pm 

10.  Alexandra Palace Boating Lake

You'll have to get up one heck of a hill to reach Ally Pally, but your efforts will be rewarded with a choice of rides that would get even the most po-faced pedalo-er squealing with delight. Choose to float across the lake in a swan, a dragon or a VW Beetle, or go trad with a plain yellow design.

Those looking to put some extra effort into their waterborne experience can take out a rowing boat instead. The Lakeside Café offers indoor and outdoor seating, free wifi and baby changing facilities.

Price : From £6.95 per adult per half hour with a minimum fee of £8.95. Open 10am-6pm Apr-Sept, 10am-4pm Oct-March, weather permitting.

11.  Battersea Park Boating Lake

The pretty lake in Battersea Park sees its hired rowing boats and pedalos going round in circles thanks to a central island. Its tall greenery also serves to allow beginners to find a more secluded spot to practice in before they are confident enough to steam back into port.

Price : £6 per adult per 30 minutes. Open school holidays, public holidays and all weekends between Easter and the end of September. 

12.  Finsbury Park Boats

Row your boat around the island in Finsbury Park's little lake. You may find yourself ducking and diving to avoid the bird life, however, especially if you've bought a bag of swan and duck feed with you. 

Price : £8 per boat per 30 minutes. All those who don their best pirate oufits on a Saturday (noon-3pm) will get a boat for £5. Open noon-6pm daily from Easter to early October, then weekends in Autumn.

The peaceful and relaxing way to enjoy the river thames.

Welcome to Zen Motor Boat Hire

Electric powered motor boat rentals.

Based at Bisham Abbey, Marlow on a beautiful part of the River Thames. Book in advance by the day or half day (No hourly rentals)

Park easily with no charge at our exclusive site and get away from the crowds.

We are easily accessible from London, just off the A404 near Marlow. Our team will meet you and have you safely on the water in no time.  Customers can head upstream towards Hurley or downstream towards Bourne End.

Our   Electric  Boats

We currently operate two kinds of electric motor boats:  

Zen Class and Crocodile

Up to 8 People

Up to 6 People

Zen Class Electric Sloop

Zen Class is the larger of our electric boats  

Comfortably seating up to up to six adults or four adults and four children

Maximum 7 Adults or 8 People when mixed with children – Minimum 2 Adults 25+ Years

Quiet, Eco-friendly, Stable, Simple Boating

Customers can travel either up stream towards Hambleden or down stream towards Cookham or a mix of both. 

Central table and cup holders on board!

Customers are given thorough instructions on how to use and how to be safe in the locks and on the river 

All participants will be provided with professional life jackets or buoyancy aids. 

Minimum age 2 years (we are unable to provide life jackets for babies) 

(sorry no dogs)

Customers should allow for about 15 minutes whilst we provide a full safety briefing for the crew before heading out out.

Week - Half Day

• From 9:45am to 1.00pm
• From 1:45pm to 5.00pm
• Includes life jackets

Weekend - Half Day

• From 9:45am to 1.0pm
• From 1:45pm to 5.000pm
• Any time between 10am and 5.00pm

Crocodile is a fun, easily manageable and stable  boat perfect for families with small children!

Our quiet electric outboard motor, makes this very pleasant and simple to use.

Ideal for a family with smaller children or a couple looking for some quiet time. 

Up to 6 people (must be a minimum of 2 adults 25+ years on board). 

The boat is speed limited for safety, so customers should be prepared for a gentle cruise, taking in the sights and sounds along the way.

Travel either up stream towards Hambleden or down stream towards Cookham or a mix of both.

Our Basic Rules

No Booze Cruising! We do not take bookings for Stag or Hen parties or groups who want a booze cruise. 

If you are in any doubt, please call us in advance of making your booking.  We can refuse entry on our boats and we will not refund you if we are not happy on the day . 

Security Deposits! We don’t generally take deposits for or electric boats, but reserve the right take up to £200 Security/Damage Deposit for Zen Class and £150 for Crocodile.

We need to take a photo of photo ID with address (driving licesnce prior to going on the water) for all motor boat hires.

Sorry No Pets! We love animals, but we have decided not to have pets on board.

Dutch Master is one of the biggest passenger boats on the Thames. She can carry up to 375 guests making her the perfect large capacity floating venue for private parties.

She is quite simply one of the best large boats in London! With two bars, an impressive sound system and the ever-changing backdrop of London’s sights, she always delivers an event to remember.

New for 2018, along with a full refurbishment, the ‘Dutch’ now has a brand new top of the line sound-system fully installed and ready for hire to keep your DJs and your guests very happy: Funktion One, Full Fat Audio, Pioneer, Technics, and outside speakers too. ​The biggest and best party boat now has the biggest and best sound system! 

Dutch Master

One of the biggest passenger boats on the Thames, and in terms of ‘party boats’ she is out there on her own.  With a maximum capacity of up to 375 guests, she is the perfect large capacity floating venue for private parties.  She is quite simply one of the best large boats in London! Powerboat & ICC courses

Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Powerboat Driving Courses, Lessons & Experiences

Do you want to learn to drive a speed boat? Want to gain the motor boat driving licence (ICC)?

Westminster Boating Base is a RYA approved centre offering RYA Powerboating Levels 2 and Safety Boat Certificates and the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) with CEVNI (Code Europeen des Voies de Navigation Interieure) endorsement. The CEVNI is a required endorsement for anyone using a boat on inland European waterways.

The following information applies to both young people and adults. All courses are run in our own powerboats which are light alloy assault craft with Yamaha High Thrust 60hp outboard engines and Humber Destroyer 5.8m RIBs with 100hp Yamaha outboards. Certificates will be endorsed for planing craft . All our courses take place at our centre on the tidal Thames in London.

RYA Level 2 National Powerboat Certificate

Prerequisites:   Minimum age 10 years but they will not be able to gain the RYA Level 2 certificate unless 12 years or over.

The course:

• 2 day course - 16hrs - on the Thames in London
• Recognised nationwide as the standard for hiring a boat.
• is the basis for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) up to 10m LOA - the paperwork you need to drive a boat in Europe (see below)
• suitable for complete novices
• includes close-quarters handling, planing manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations.
• Endorsed for planing craft and course will include coastal elements.
• taught on a maximum ratio of 3 students to 1 instructor per boat
• Continuous learning and assessment - no exam at the end!

To obtain the ICC: The RYA level 2 certificate can be directly converted to an ICC (International Certificate of Competence, min age 16yrs). This is simply a paperwork exercise and the ICC can be obtained from the RYA. The application can be made online or if you prefer we can help you complete the application form on paper. See below for ICC eligibility. Can also include CEVNI test for inland waterways.

Times:  courses run 10am-6pm each day.

International Certificate of Competence (ICC) (pleasure craft)

• This is often thought of as the driving licence for boats.
• An ICC obtained after one of our RYA Powerboat Level 2 courses will endorse you for powerboats up to 10 metres in length.
• There is no engine size restriction.
• The ICC is accepted and required across most of Europe. It is advisable to check with the maritime authorities of individual locations as to the exact requirement.

ELIGIBILITY

The UK ICC issued by the RYA, is issued on behalf of the UK Government under the authorisation of the UK Maritime and Coastguard (MCA). It is issued in conformity with Resolution No. 40 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Working Party on Inland Water Transport.

In accordance with Resolution No. 40, it is only available to a person who fulfils the following eligibility criteria:

• has reached the age of 16; and
• is physically and mentally fit to operate a pleasure craft, and in particular, has sufficient powers of vision and hearing.

Evidence of applicant’s identity and eligibility Before issuing, amending or replacing an ICC the RYA must verify the applicant’s identity and their nationality (as the UK ICC issued by the RYA is not available to the nationals of countries that have adopted Resolution No. 40 unless they are resident in the UK).

You must provide copies of official documents which collectively evidence your name, address, date of birth, nationality and that the photograph you have supplied is a true likeness of you. See part 2 of the ICC application form for details of acceptable documents and a list of the countries that have adopted Resolution No. 40.

The ICC assessment allows the holder to drive powerboats up to 10 metres in length on coastal water. If you want to be able to drive on inland waterways too, see CEVNI test below.

"I have an RYA Powerboat  Level 2 certificate" If you hold an RYA Level 2 National Powerboat Certificate you can apply directly to the RYA for the ICC.

"I don't have an RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate" To get an ICC: Book an RYA Level 2 powerboat course . The price includes the Level 2 certificate.

On successful completion of the course you will be given your Level 2 certificate and the ICC paperwork (signed by the instructor) that you need to send to the RYA (with an administration fee). Once you make your application to the RYA, you should receive your ICC within 21 days, although there is a 2 day fast-track service also available.

"I'm an experienced powerboat driver - without an RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate" If you are an experienced powerboat driver you can undergo a one-day assessment of your abilities by arrangement with us. For those that have significant experience in driving boats and a thorough knowledge of navigation, a pass can usually be achieved in one day.

A one day direct assessment for experienced helms can be made on a one-to-one basis for £440 (plus administration fee payable to the RYA for the ICC certificate).

CEVNI (Code Europeen Des Voies De Navigation Interieure) Test

This enables legal navigation of inland waterways in many European countries and tests your knowledge of signs, lights and symbols that are commonly used. Its a 30 question multiple-choice paper with a pass-mark set at a minimum of 22 correct answers. You will need to be well read on the signage before taking the test.

If you are booking a RYA Level 2 Powerboat course and want to take the CEVNI test at the same time, we will make time for it during the course - just let your instructors know at the start of the course.

You will need to know your waterway signs, symbols and lights and we advise that you purchase the RYA CEVNI Handbook (available from RYA website HERE ) to aid with your revision.
