Testimonials

Nathaniel g..

"I had wanted a Yacht-Master for as long as I could remember, but could never justify the high price of buying new. Once I realized that buying pre-owned might be a smarter option, I searched around the internet, but only Bob's Watches made me feel comfortable with making such a large purchase online. I understood their business model, and past customers' reviews were very positive. The prices were competitive as well, and rivaled those of less-trustworthy dealers. Once I made my choice, there was a slight hiccup in the process to wire funds, but when I called in, the problem was quickly resolved.

I received my watch a few days later, and it looked stunning. When the site says "mint condition," it means it! Bob's was also able to tell me when the watch was last serviced, which (in combination with the one-year warranty) gives me peace-of-mind. As I look to expand my collection of watches, I'm sure I'll be a repeat customer of Bob's Watches."

Review originally published on Trustpilot

"I have been shopping for the Rolex Yachtmaster for the better part of a year. I visited multiple jewelers & brokers in my area. Either they were of poor condition or over priced. Then I found Bobs Watches. The staff was expeditious and courteous. They sent me new photos of the watch upon request with no hesitation. The service, price, and condition of the watch was without compare. I am now a lifelong customer of Bobs Watches, I cannot imagine buying from any other source."

Web3 holds the potential to fundamentally reshape commerce and the Internet, and revolutionize how money is transmitted around the globe. Blockchain and token systems give users more control over their digital assets and identity, and greater ability to move seamlessly between platforms. These changes could lead to new peer-to-peer models of exchange.  But do sustainable business applications exist for these novel technologies?

The D^3 Institute’s Crypto, Fintech, and Web3 Lab will work with communities of crypto practitioners and innovators in fintech and the digital economy. Researchers will explore token systems, governance models, incentives, and evaluate how Web3 is impacting finance, entrepreneurship, and the broader economy. The goal of the Lab’s research is to contribute to fundamental knowledge, shape the way these technologies are applied towards innovation, efficiency, and inclusion, inform companies and shape the thinking of regulators.

The Crypto, Fintech, and Web3 Lab is led by:

Shai Bernstein Headshot

  • Scott Duke Kominers, Sarofim-Rock Professor of Business Administration in the Entrepreneurial Management Unit; Faculty Affiliate in the Harvard Department of Economics and Center of Mathematical Sciences and Applications; and Research Partner at a16z crypto.

  • Do cryptography tools influence finance applications, both blockchain and non-blockchain related?
  • What roles do crypto technologies play in consumer markets?
  • The role of digital assets in labor and goods markets and associated regulations to protect consumers.
  • The innovations and trends observed in credit markets and asset management.
  • How does the use of big data affect the provision of financial services?
  • What are the strategies to improve financial inclusion and reach those underbanked and underserved by financial institutions?

Entrepreneurial Finance and Web3

  • How is building a startup in Web3 different from Web2.0?
  • How do investors deploy capital into Web3 start-ups and how are they involved in Web3 projects and contribute to their success?

Refik Anadol Studio arrow_outward Blog arrow_outward

crypto research and design lab

Anadol’s body of work addresses the challenges, and the possibilities, that ubiquitous computing has imposed on humanity, and what it means to be a human in the age of AI. He explores how the perception and experience of time and space are radically changing now that machines dominate our everyday lives. Anadol is intrigued by the ways in which the digital age and machine intelligence allow for a new aesthetic technique to create enriched immersive environments that offer a dynamic perception of space.

By proposing the possibility of “post-digital architecture,” Anadol invites his audience to imagine alternative realities by redefining the functionalities of both interior and exterior architectural elements. He tackles this by moving beyond the integration of media into built forms and translating the logic of a new media technology into art and design.

Residing at the crossroads of art, science, and technology, Anadol’s site-specific three-dimensional data sculptures and paintings, live audio/visual performances, and immersive installations take varied virtual and physical forms. Entire buildings come to life, floors, walls, and ceilings disappear into infinity, breathtaking aesthetics take shape from large swaths of data, and what was once invisible to the human eye becomes visible, offering the audience a new perspective on, and narrative of their worlds.

The primary thread that runs throughout Anadol’s groundbreaking visualizations of the unseen world is data. For Unsupervised at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Anadol posed an alternate understanding of modern art by transforming the metadata of MoMA’s vast collection into a work that continuously generates new forms in real-time. For Quantum Memories at the National Gallery of Victoria, 200 million photos of Earth and its landscapes, oceans and atmosphere were used to visualize an alternate reality of nature. For Sense of Space at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia – approximately 70 terabytes of multimodal MRI data, including structural, diffusion (DTI) and functional (fMRI) scans of people ranging from birth to nonagenarians was used to design the human brain-inspired artwork. Archival photographic data of our universe from the archives of NASA/JPL was the driving force behind Machine Memoirs: Space, Istanbul’s most visited exhibition ever. Machine Hallucination: NYC harnessed 113 million publicly available images of New York City to envision the near future of a storied city. For WDCH Dreams, 100 years of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s digital archives were tapped to inspire the visuals projected onto Frank Gehry’s iconic building. Oakland’s Sense of Place used real-time environmental data such as wind, temperature, and humidity as well as invisible communication signals from Bluetooth, Wifi and LTE to inform the work. At Berlin’s Latent Being, the visitors interacted with the artwork and themselves provided real-time data for the artificial thinking process. Charlotte Airport’s Interconnected, Anadol transformed real-time airport statistics such as arrivals/departures, baggage handling systems and ground shuttle transportation into an ever-changing suite of abstract form, color, and simulated texture.

Refik Anadol ’s global projects have received a number of awards and prizes including the Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award for New Media Art, Microsoft Research’s Best Vision Award, iF Gold Award, D&AD Pencil Award, German Design Award, UCLA Art+Architecture Moss Award, Columbia University’s Breakthrough in Storytelling Award, University of California Institute for Research in the Arts Award, SEGD Global Design Award, and Google’s Artists and Machine Intelligence Artist Residency Award.

Anadol’s site-specific audio/visual performances have been featured at iconic landmarks, museums and festivals worldwide, such as the 17th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, The Museum of Modern Art (New York), The Centre Pompidou, Pinakothek der Moderne, EMMA Museum, Art Basel, Haus der elektronischen, Kunsthalle Praha, Palazzo Strozzi, Casa Batlló, National Gallery of Victoria, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hammer Museum, Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Artechouse, The Portland Building, Daejeon Museum of Art, Florence Biennale, Art Basel, OFFF Festival, International Digital Arts Biennial Montreal, Ars Electronica Festival , l’Usine | Genève, Arc De Triomf, Zollverein | SANAA’s School of Design Building, santralistanbul Contemporary Art Center, Outdoor Vision Festival, Istanbul Design Biennial, Sydney City Art, and Lichtrouten, among many others.

Refik Anadol Studio, an early adopter of blockchain technology, has utilized NFT sales to raise over $5 million U.S. dollars for charitable organizations including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Alzheimer’s Foundation and UNICEF. Machine Hallucinations — Space: Metaverse, a physical exhibition in Hong Kong and correlating NFT collection, brought together the studio’s richly diverse works to the Metaverse. Presented in collaboration with Sotheby’s, the NFT collection contained yet another groundbreaking approach to media arts by presenting the first immersive NFT. Living Architecture: Casa Batlló, inspired by Antoni Gaudi’s building in Barcelona, Spain, became the first artwork from the studio to be auctioned by Christie’s. The piece was displayed on a giant media screen in New York’s iconic Rockefeller Plaza with a simultaneous live projection mapping performance on the actual facade of Casa Batlló which was viewed by an enormous crowd of nearly 50,000 people. As the only NFT offered during Christie’s 21st Century Evening Sale which also included physical works by Banksy, Gerhard Richter, and Jeff Koons, among others, Living Architecture: Casa Batlló set records for the next generation of young artists.

Refik Anadol Studio comprises designers, architects, data scientists, and researchers from diverse professional and personal backgrounds, embracing principles of inclusion and equity throughout every stage of production. Studio members originate from 10 different countries and are collectively fluent in 15 languages. The Studio’s internship program also demonstrates a strong commitment to mentoring young people from a variety of personal experiences, values, and world views.

A pioneer in his field, and the first to use artificial intelligence in a public artwork, Anadol has partnered with teams at Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA, NASA/JPL, Intel, IBM, Siemens, Epson, MIT, UCLA, Harvard University, Imperial College, Stanford University, and UCSF, to apply the latest, cutting-edge science, research and technologies to his work.

Russia scraps plans for a national cryptocurrency exchange

Russia will continue to create new crypto platforms in response to sanctions, State Duma official Anatoly Aksakov said.

Russia scraps plans for a national cryptocurrency exchange

Own this piece of crypto history

COINTELEGRAPH IN YOUR SOCIAL FEED

The Russian government is no longer planning to launch a regulated national cryptocurrency exchange but rather wants to regulate multiple crypto trading platforms.

After introducing a plan to  create a national crypto exchange in November 2022, Russian lawmakers have abandoned the idea, according to State Duma member Anatoly Aksakov. As previously reported, the local government was considering launching a unified crypto exchange as part of the Moscow Exchange .

Instead of setting up a unified crypto exchange, Russia now wants to set rules for creating and managing such platforms, Aksakov said, the local news agency Izvestia reported on May 29. Russia’s Ministry of Finance was reportedly among the authorities that didn’t support the plan for a national crypto exchange.

Aksakov, who leads the Duma’s financial markets committee, noted that crypto exchanges would allow Russian businesses to process cross-border transactions. Crypto exchanges will also enable local firms to avoid sanctions, which is likely to trigger restrictions against such platforms.

In response to such restrictions, Russia will continue to create new crypto platforms and organizations, Aksakov said, adding that the main thing would be to regulate that process.

The Russian central bank is likely to be the main regulatory authority supervising cryptocurrency exchanges, Aksakov suggested. The associated regulatory framework will be part of the bill on experimental legal regimes, he noted.

According to Bank of Russia deputy governor Alexey Guznov, it’s too early to talk about cryptocurrency exchanges in Russia in the classical sense of the word. More likely, such platforms would rather act as organizations that coordinate interaction between exporters and importers in facilitating cross-border transactions. Such organizations, for example, will help Russian companies pay for parallel imports, he noted.

Major Russian crypto companies have reportedly opposed the idea of creating a national crypto exchange but rather establish a regulatory framework for such organizations.

A new regulatory mechanism will help minimize risks of sanctions and infrastructure cyberattacks, as well as eliminate issues related to the dominant market position, according to BitRiver compliance executive Oleg Ogienko. He suggested that crypto exchanges must restrict unqualified investors on their platforms, at least in the initial stages.

According to some crypto industry observers, the idea of setting up a unified crypto exchange in Russia was not really feasible in the first place.

"The concept of a single national crypto exchange in Russia was never going to be accepted by the crypto community in Russia," Lesperance & Associates founder David Lesperance told Cointelegraph. According to the legal expert, taxation would be the least of users' worries about this government oversight in such a scenario. He stated:

"Transactions such as sending funds to dissidents; buying plane tickets to avoid conscription; or moving assets out of Russia could all result in a knock at the door in the middle of the night. Why use a national crypto exchange when a world of alternatives was just a VPN away?"

The news comes amid the Russian government continuing to develop legislation targeting the cryptocurrency industry as well as the bill on the central bank digital currency.

Researchers around the world are racing to build quantum computers that would operate in radically different ways from ordinary computers and could break the current encryption that provides security and privacy for just about everything we do online.  The algorithms announced today are specified in the first completed standards from NIST’s  post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standardization project , and are ready for immediate use.

The three new standards are built for the future. Quantum computing technology is developing rapidly, and some experts predict that a device with the capability to break current encryption methods could appear  within a decade , threatening the security and privacy of individuals, organizations and entire nations.

Want to learn more about post-quantum cryptography? Check out our explainer.

“The advancement of quantum computing plays an essential role in reaffirming America’s status as a global technological powerhouse and driving the future of our economic security,” said Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves.   “Commerce bureaus are doing their part to ensure U.S. competitiveness in quantum, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which is at the forefront of this whole-of-government effort. NIST is providing invaluable expertise to develop innovative solutions to our quantum challenges, including security measures like post-quantum cryptography that organizations can start to implement to secure our post-quantum future. As this decade-long endeavor continues, we look forward to continuing Commerce’s legacy of leadership in this vital space.”

The standards — containing the encryption algorithms’ computer code, instructions for how to implement them, and their intended uses — are  the result of an eight-year effort managed by NIST, which has a long history of developing encryption. The agency has rallied the world’s cryptography experts to conceive, submit and then evaluate cryptographic algorithms that could resist the assault of quantum computers. The nascent technology could revolutionize fields from weather forecasting to fundamental physics to drug design, but it carries threats as well.

“Quantum computing technology could become a force for solving many of society’s most intractable problems, and the new standards represent NIST’s commitment to ensuring it will not simultaneously disrupt our security,” said Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and NIST Director Laurie E. Locascio . “These finalized standards are the capstone of NIST’s efforts to safeguard our confidential electronic information.”

The Journey Toward Quantum Resistant Algorithms: NIST's Initiative

Encryption carries a heavy load in modern digitized society. It protects countless electronic secrets, such as the contents of email messages, medical records and photo libraries, as well as information vital to national security. Encrypted data can be sent across public computer networks because it is unreadable to all but its sender and intended recipient.

Encryption tools rely on complex math problems that conventional computers find difficult or impossible to solve. A sufficiently capable quantum computer, though, would be able to sift through a vast number of potential solutions to these problems very quickly, thereby defeating current encryption. The algorithms NIST has standardized are based on different math problems that would stymie both conventional and quantum computers.

“These finalized standards include instructions for incorporating them into products and encryption systems,” said NIST mathematician Dustin Moody, who heads the PQC standardization project. “We encourage system administrators to start integrating them into their systems immediately, because full integration will take time.”

Moody said that these standards are the primary tools for general encryption and protecting digital signatures.

NIST also continues to evaluate two other sets of algorithms that could one day serve as backup standards.

One of these sets consists of three algorithms designed for general encryption but based on a different type of math problem than the general-purpose algorithm in the finalized standards. NIST plans to announce its selection of one or two of these algorithms by the end of 2024.

The second set includes a larger group of algorithms designed for digital signatures.  In order to accommodate any ideas that cryptographers may have had since the initial 2016 call for submissions , NIST asked the public for additional algorithms in 2022 and has begun a process of evaluating them. In the near future, NIST expects to announce about 15 algorithms from this group that will proceed to the next round of testing, evaluation and analysis.

While analysis of these two additional sets of algorithms will continue, Moody said that any subsequent PQC standards will function as backups to the three that NIST announced today.

“There is no need to wait for future standards,” he said. “Go ahead and start using these three. We need to be prepared in case of an attack that defeats the algorithms in these three standards, and we will continue working on backup plans to keep our data safe. But for most applications, these new standards are the main event.”

More Details on the New Standards

Encryption uses math to protect sensitive electronic information, including secure websites and emails. Widely used  public-key encryption systems , which rely on math problems that computers find intractable, ensure that these websites and messages are inaccessible to unwelcome third parties. Before making the selections, NIST considered not only the security of the algorithms’ underlying math, but also the best applications for them.

The new standards are designed for two essential tasks for which encryption is typically used: general encryption, used to protect information exchanged across a public network; and digital signatures, used for identity authentication. NIST  announced its selection of four algorithms — CRYSTALS-Kyber, CRYSTALS-Dilithium, Sphincs+ and FALCON — slated for standardization in 2022 and  released draft versions of three of these standards in 2023. The fourth draft standard based on FALCON is planned for late 2024.

While there have been no substantive changes made to the standards since the draft versions, NIST has changed the algorithms’ names to specify the versions that appear in the three finalized standards, which are:

  • Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 203 , intended as the primary standard for general encryption. Among its advantages are comparatively small encryption keys that two parties can exchange easily, as well as its speed of operation. The standard is based on the  CRYSTALS-Kyber algorithm, which has been renamed ML-KEM, short for Module-Lattice-Based Key-Encapsulation Mechanism.
  • FIPS 204 , intended as the primary standard for protecting digital signatures. The standard uses the  CRYSTALS-Dilithium algorithm, which has been renamed ML-DSA, short for Module-Lattice-Based Digital Signature Algorithm.
  • FIPS 205 , also designed for digital signatures. The standard employs the  Sphincs+ algorithm, which has been renamed SLH-DSA, short for Stateless Hash-Based Digital Signature Algorithm. The standard is based on a different math approach than ML-DSA, and it is intended as a backup method in case ML-DSA proves vulnerable.

Similarly, when the draft FIPS 206 standard built around FALCON is released, the algorithm will be dubbed FN-DSA, short for FFT (fast-Fourier transform) over NTRU-Lattice-Based Digital Signature Algorithm.

Swiss firm unveils AI service training using human brain cell biocomputers

In this post:

  • FinalSpark launches new organoids that can last for up to 100 days from just a few hours.
  • The new organoids could use up to 100,000 times less energy than generative AIs.
  • FinalSpark hopes to extend the organoids’ life lifespans in the future.

Swiss technology firm FinalSpark has introduced a program that offers scientists access to “biocomputers” composed of human brain cells. These biocomputers are made from clusters of lab-grown brain cells known as organoids.

The concept of temporary living AI

FinalSpark says its biocomputers, or organoids, have a “lifespan” of up to 100 days. This relatively short operational window means that AI systems trained on these organoids may need to be periodically transferred to new clusters or face degradation.

Training these organoids involves twin setups: positive dopamine rewards and negative electrical stimulation. These methods help the organoids form new pathways more like a living human brain appears to learn. So far, these organoids are being watched around the clock to observe their behavior and find better ways to make them operate as they are told.

Universities jump on the opportunity to research new organoids

Roughly 34 universities have requested to use the new FinalSpark’s ‘biocomputers.’ However, the company has only agreed to the requests of 9 institutions, including the University of Michigan, the Free University of Berlin, and the Lancaster University in Germany.

The University of Michigan has said it will prioritize its research on the electrical and chemical prompts necessary to alter organoid activity and build on developing organoid-specific computer language. Meanwhile, scientists at Lancaster University Leipzig in Germany are trying to fit the organoids into different models of AI learning, enabling them to run on a larger scale and possibly gain ground over silicon-based AI systems.

FinalSpark’s biocomputers may already have some competition

The Swedish firm has ramped up its neuro platform facility, which is now capable of producing between 2000 and 3000 biocomputers. However, it may not be the only company producing ‘biocomputers’ for very long.

Ángel Goñi-Moreno, a researcher at Spain’s National Center for Biotechnology, said he is working on new cellular computers capable of responding to environmental stimuli . These computers could facilitate bioremediation and restoration of damaged ecosystems, a phenomenon he called “cellular supremacy.”

Moreover, Andrew Adamatzky of the University of the West of England focuses his work on fungi, which show similar electrical properties to those of neurons. He hopes to use them in a brain-like fungal computing system.  Andrew said he has already successfully trained fungal networks to help computer systems perform certain mathematical functions. Andrew is hoping to scale up his research and make his fungi system able to learn and be used for reservoir computing and pattern.

Future space missions could use quantum technology to track water on Earth, explore the composition of moons and other planets, or probe mysterious cosmic phenomena.

NASA’s Cold Atom Lab, a first-of-its-kind facility aboard the International Space Station, has taken another step toward revolutionizing how quantum science can be used in space. Members of the science team measured subtle vibrations of the space station with one of the lab’s onboard tools — the first time ultra-cold atoms have been employed to detect changes in the surrounding environment in space.

The study , which appeared in Nature Communications on Aug. 13, also reports the longest demonstration of the wave-like nature of atoms in freefall in space.

The Cold Atom Lab science team made their measurements with a quantum tool called an atom interferometer, which can precisely measure gravity, magnetic fields, and other forces. Scientists and engineers on Earth use this tool to study the fundamental nature of gravity and advance technologies that aid aircraft and ship navigation. (Cell phones, transistors, and GPS are just a few other major technologies based on quantum science but do not involve atom interferometry.)

Physicists have been eager to apply atom interferometry in space because the microgravity there allows longer measurement times and greater instrument sensitivity, but the exquisitely sensitive equipment has been considered too fragile to function for extended periods without hands-on assistance. The Cold Atom Lab, which is operated remotely from Earth, has now shown it’s possible.

“Reaching this milestone was incredibly challenging, and our success was not always a given,” said Jason Williams, the Cold Atom Lab project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “It took dedication and a sense of adventure by the team to make this happen.”

Space-based sensors that can measure gravity with high precision have a wide range of potential applications. For instance, they could reveal the composition of planets and moons in our solar system, because different materials have different densities that create subtle variations in gravity.

This type of measurement is already being performed by the U.S.-German collaboration GRACE-FO (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-on), which detects slight changes in gravity to track the movement of water and ice on Earth. An atom interferometer could provide additional precision and stability, revealing more detail about surface mass changes.

Precise measurements of gravity could also offer insights into the nature of dark matter and dark energy, two major cosmological mysteries. Dark matter is an invisible substance five times more common in the universe than the “regular” matter that composes planets, stars, and everything else we can see. Dark energy is the name given to the unknown driver of the universe’s accelerating expansion.

“Atom interferometry could also be used to test Einstein’s theory of general relativity in new ways,” said University of Virginia professor Cass Sackett, a Cold Atom Lab principal investigator and co-author of the new study. “This is the basic theory explaining the large-scale structure of our universe, and we know that there are aspects of the theory that we don’t understand correctly. This technology may help us fill in those gaps and give us a more complete picture of the reality we inhabit.”

About the size of a minifridge, the Cold Atom Lab launched to the space station in 2018 with the goal of advancing quantum science by putting a long-term facility in the microgravity environment of low Earth orbit. The lab cools atoms to almost absolute zero, or minus 459 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 273 degrees Celsius). At this temperature, some atoms can form a Bose-Einstein condensate, a state of matter in which all atoms essentially share the same quantum identity. As a result, some of the atoms’ typically microscopic quantum properties become macroscopic, making them easier to study.

Quantum properties include sometimes acting like solid particles and sometimes like waves. Scientists don’t know how these building blocks of all matter can transition between such different physical behaviors, but they’re using quantum technology like what’s available on the Cold Atom Lab to seek answers.

In microgravity, Bose-Einstein condensates can reach colder temperatures and exist for longer, giving scientists more opportunities to study them. The atom interferometer is among several tools in the facility enabling precision measurements by harnessing the quantum nature of atoms.

Due to its wave-like behavior, a single atom can simultaneously travel two physically separate paths. If gravity or other forces are acting on those waves, scientists can measure that influence by observing how the waves recombine and interact.

“I expect that space-based atom interferometry will lead to exciting new discoveries and fantastic quantum technologies impacting everyday life, and will transport us into a quantum future,” said Nick Bigelow, a professor at University of Rochester in New York and Cold Atom Lab principal investigator for a consortium of U.S. and German scientists who co-authored the study.

A division of Caltech in Pasadena, JPL designed and built Cold Atom Lab, which is sponsored by the Biological and Physical Sciences (BPS) division of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at the agency’s headquarters in Washington. BPS pioneers scientific discovery and enables exploration by using space environments to conduct investigations that are not possible on Earth. Studying biological and physical phenomena under extreme conditions allows researchers to advance the fundamental scientific knowledge required to go farther and stay longer in space, while also benefitting life on Earth.
