Luxury Catamaran AURA 65' launched in 2023 housing 8 guests in 4 cabins. Curated with a neutral and simplistic design, the modern feel creates an essence of luxury. With a dedicated crew of 3, every details will be maintained and every need will be taken care of while you are on board. With an inclusive option and an open bar, your comfort is top priority for AURA.

NOTABLE FEATURES FOR AURA: ~Large fly bridge ~Two wet bars ~Al fresco dining ~Various sun loungers ~Covered seating for protection from weather ~High/low swim platform

The exterior spaces are quite impressive with two al fresco dining areas both in the cockpit and up in the fly bridge. If you are not ready for lunch, you can relax on a sun pad just off of the dining area in both locations. Leaving you with no worries, there are multiple wet bars throughout the yacht for fast service and empty cups. Back down to the aft area, there is a high/low swim platform where you can stay dry and cool down by dipping your toes into the water. With several water toys, you can watch from the swim platform or up on the aft deck. Walking towards the bow, there are multiple lounge pads that are deemed the 'best seat in the house' as you are underway or take this spot to escape from the water toy madness.

"Some choices sometimes seem immutable at Lagoon: for example, the choice of working with VPLP architects, the world’s most successful naval architects in multihull racing, or that of fixed keels rather than daggerboards for simplicity, ease of beaching and safety in case of impact. However, each new Lagoon model offers often major innovations to make cruising even more enjoyable." - Lagoon Yachts

Meet the Crew

Crew photo

Jos and Julia hail from England and have been traveling together for over 11 years. After meeting whilst teaching watersports in Greece, they subsequently ran luxury ski chalets and villas in Europe before transitioning to yachting. They have been chartering in the Caribbean together for over 8 years.

Jos earnt his commercial Yachtmaster qualification from the Royal Yachting Association and holds all the necessary credentials to safely captain AURA throughout your charter. He will also be your Divemaster onboard, showing certified divers the magic of the underwater world. We've lost count, but he has over 400 dives with guests here in the BVI. An avid fisherman, he will also spend hours with those wanting to fish!

Julia enjoys looking after the guests onboard and ensuring they are happy, having fun and never with an empty glass in hand! Originally from an education background, she especially enjoys families and kids onboard. For active guests, she will happily take those looking for an adventure hiking on the trails around the BVI. Both love what they do and are committed to creating vacations you will remember for a lifetime. ..read more

THESE TERMS ALSO CONTAIN A LEGALLY BINDING RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker has no special knowledge regarding the Charter Provider’s or Charter Supplier’s financial condition, unsafe conditions, health hazards, weather hazards, or climate extremes at locations to which you may travel during or otherwise in connection with your Charter.

  • Limitation on Liability . • Severability . If any provision of these Terms is held by a court or other tribunal of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be eliminated or limited to the minimum extent such that the remaining provisions of the Terms will continue in full force and effect.

Innovative, high-tech composite materials constitute most of the structure of our sailing catamarans: hulls, flybridge, decks, bulkheads and more. Fountaine Pajot has perfected a resin injection and infusion technique, an advanced technology that gives our boats all their robustness. Thanks to this expertise, we can make our catamarans considerably lighter while maintaining consistent quality . Injection also makes it possible to meet the most stringent environmental requirements, in line with the commitments of the Fountaine Pajot Group.

Sailing catamarans from 40 to 50 feet are built at the Aigrefeuille headquarters, a few kilometres from La Rochelle. Catamaran yachts from 51 to 80 feet are built in La Rochelle, France, where they benefit from a slipway.

It is essential to define your sailing program: define the size of the crew on board, the level of sailing knowledge, the sailing project and the target sailing area. Every project is different. Whether you want to enjoy a large Owner’s suite, invite many friends and family on board, or telecommute during your voyage, the Fountaine Pajot cruising catamarans can be adapted to suit your needs. The ergonomics of Fountaine Pajot catamarans have been designed to facilitate manoeuvring at the helm, enabling a small crew (2 persons) to manoeuvre the boat easily, both in port and at sea. The unique design of the helm station allows good communication between the aft cockpit and the Fly relaxation areas. Of course, your level of navigation will determine your ability to sail with two or more persons!

Our electric catamarans now feature a large surface area of solar panels, up to 2000 WC, perfectly integrated into the design of the coachroof. Combined with equipment such as wind turbines or hydro-generators, they compensate for the energy consumption generated by on-board use during cruising. Discover the benefits of the Smart Electric solution with 4 real-life cruise scenarios

The Fountaine Pajot range of electric catamarans is expanding, and now includes 3 Smart Electric models. The Astréa 42, Elba 45 and Aura 51 are now available in this version.

With the help of over 70 engineers, Fountaine Pajot has developed an in-house solution, 100% adapted to the use of its catamarans equipped with hybrid electric motors . All on-board production and energy expenditure flows are managed from a single console designed by our teams to offer a simple, designer user experience. Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

Step aboard the wide transom steps of the Aura 51 and I’d challenge even the most stubborn traditionalist or monohull enthusiast not to be in awe of the space and home comforts on offer. For those thinking of spending long periods of time or even living aboard, this is a definitive, modern, large production catamaran, one which – if you’re lucky enough to be in the market for such a substantial yacht – quickly gets you dreaming of a life afloat, with space to take friends, family and toys aplenty.

That was the case for the highly experienced sailing couple who own the second Aura 51 to launch and the boat we trialled. Johan Salen, co-owner of The Ocean Race (formerly the Volvo Ocean Race), lives and works aboard full time with his wife, Christine, and their dog Leo.

The Salens spent three years sailing their previous performance catamaran, an Outremer 5X , around the world with their son. But after seven years living ashore since then, they wanted a more comfortable boat, yet one still capable of averaging 8-10 knots.

When we met they had just stepped ashore after their first two months of ownership, which involved leisurely non-stop cruising the Glénan Islands, off Christine’s Brittany homeland. And their plan now is to spend the next four years exploring all around the European coastlines before embarking on another bluewater adventure to the Pacific.

Creating an Aura

The Aura 51 is arguably the largest manageable size of catamaran before a professional crew is needed. It’s also the first model to offer the yard’s new Smart Electric option. Fountaine Pajot worked with La Rochelle specialists Alternatives Energies to develop electric pods with hydrogenerators and energy storage and management systems. It has already launched a hybrid version and there’s an electric and hydrogen model in the pipeline. It’s good to see such a large production yard taking proper, positive steps towards cleaner boating.

The Aura 51 replaces the Saba 50, bringing more voluminous hulls and wider transom entrances. The new coachroof design integrates copious solar panels, brings more natural light and a larger flybridge area. The main bulkhead doors fully retract to give a 3m wide opening between saloon/galley and cockpit, while a clever accommodation plan offers four layouts, with all cabins including the six cabin version having en suite facilities.

The Salens have an owner’s hull to port, and three cabins to starboard. For me, the aft access to this via a gullwing door is a real selling point. It makes it all too easy to imagine waking up and walking straight out onto the aft deck and into clear Pacific waters.

With a four year minimum waiting list the norm for new catamarans, the Salens consider themselves lucky to have found a slot with Fountaine Pajot. Photo: EYOTY/Ludovic Fruchaud

The cockpit can be fully enclosed with canopies, which the Salens found useful in driving rain, and the intelligent design allows these to be left mounted ready to deploy. This option can additionally offer some visual protection and security for when leaving the boat. The cockpit also features abundant stowage.

The foredeck may feel a little plain without cushioning options and there’s no access to the flybridge to climb up/jump down in a hurry. However, it boasts a cavernous central locker. On the test boat this easily swallowed two gennakers, the genset, an auxiliary outboard motor and a spare line drum.

Once out of La Rochelle’s narrow channel, we met mirror calm seas, yet raised sails in vain hope. But I was pleasantly surprised to note we could still ghost along at 3 knots in 3.5 knots true wind and up to 4.5 knots in 6.5-7 knots close reaching using only white sails.

That said the Aura 51 needs at least double figure wind speeds to make meaningful speeds. My fellow European Yacht of the Year jury members from Yacht magazine confirmed reaching speeds of 6 knots in 8-10 knots wind during their trials.

Island forms a social heart and the galley has abundant cold stowage and plenty of worksurface, albeit not fiddled. Photo: Jean-Marie Liot

The steering linkage is hydraulic, and with no feedback at all it takes time to figure out how much correction to add. There is also negligible visibility from the single helm to the port side, particularly aft, hence there will be a need to dock starboard side too, or else rely on help from cameras.

The helmstation works well with its large bench, wide enough for a couple (and dog!). There is room to pass between the wheel and the winch bench to the side deck or flybridge, yet they are close enough to work both areas.

My thoughts on sail handling and performance are almost irrelevant given the very light conditions we experienced. I was keen to learn more about why the Salens chose this model as it’s unusual for experienced sailors to step down in performance terms. They explained that as they always sail two up now, the average speeds the Aura offers is plenty. Indeed, both Johan and Christine pointed to an uncomfortable motion at higher cruising speeds.

“Once you start going quicker than 10 knots it involves more pitching and is more uncomfortable to live on. If you have a boat that can sail at 8-10 knots comfortably, that’s enough,” said Johan.

Loïc Madeline, editor of Voiles and another jury member, confirmed such easy speeds to me when the wind built to 14-16 knots. They hit 10 knots easily and made a steady 9 knots under autopilot with white sails at 70-75° true – “easy speed with no one really taking care of the sails,” he reported.

The Salens rarely go to marinas so manoeuvring from the single helm hasn’t been an issue. They find using one engine at 2,000rpm the most economic method under power, which burns 4-5lt per hour.

The couple made another salient point: “When you spend a lot of time aboard, you are not sailing most of the time,” Johan explained. “Even with our 5X we were sailing less than 10% of the time.” The Swedish ex-professional windsurfer considers it more important now to have the space to ship the right equipment and watersports toys to enjoy at anchor.

The Salens have a 3.8m Highfield RIB and 25hp motor on davits which they can waterski behind and use for exploration. They also keep a small inflatable in the forward locker, which comes in use in ports and going ashore/lifting up a beach, plus a garage of foiling /windsports gear in the sail lockers. “It’s the toys you can bring to enjoy life that is one of the main benefits a catamaran brings,” says Johan.

Aura 51 below decks

The cockpit hosts the main dining area, but Berret Racoupeau design has really opened up the connection to the galley. The latter is huge, including a generous island that forms the heart of the social space as it might in a modern home. Long, large skylights work with all the coachroof windows to make it naturally bright and an opening forward window adds valuable ventilation.

The lack of a desk/navstation option on the main deck is a pity – there’s not even a conventional switchboard, just touchscreen controls. Indeed, I find the single layout format, albeit understandable for serial production purposes, a little limiting on the main deck. The two large drawer fridges, to forward port, are an excellent inclusion, however they are in a strange position above the companionway as you find yourself half in the stairwell to access them. Personally I’d prefer the option for a forward-facing navstation/desk area there.

Beam enough in the hulls for an athwartships double cabin forward too. Photo: Jean-Marie Liot

Square edges on the furniture are a pet hate – large catamarans such as this still move and pitch around at awkward angles at sea. The corners of the veneers were already damaged on the saloon table, which is disappointing for a seven figure boat.

The owner’s hull obviously enjoys massive amounts of headroom and space, with a sculpted out bulkhead to open out the cabin area. It provides serious lashings of home liveaboard comfort, with a generous changing area opposite the wardrobes, and the crowning element of direct aft deck access aft. The desk amidships is key, an area Johan uses constantly as his office.

The whole forward section is a bathroom with a huge walk-in shower, plentiful light and ventilation and separate heads area, the size of which you’d be happy with in most homes.

In the starboard hull a bulkhead separates the aft cabin so it can only be accessed from the cockpit. Each of the three cabins in this hull still feels large and has its own en suite, even if the athwartships berth forward has a slightly more prestige feel.

Fountaine Pajot has produced another inviting model, especially for the space and comfort it offers for long periods aboard, mixed with an ability to still sail reasonably well and ensure you can clock good average speeds. As ever, it brings compromises, such as hands-on feel, visibility and manageability, but where do your priorities lie? Johan Salen made a point I have often found myself thinking. Liveaboard sailors typically spend such a small percentage of the time at the wheel, that if you want to get that adrenaline buzz, ‘have the right toys with you’ he stressed – rather than try and get the sportiest yacht to be your floating home. Go dinghy sailing, kiting, or wingfoiling instead once you’re at the anchorage. A large catamaran such as this gives you the means to store such toys; it becomes the mothership, as it were. And that really appeals!

If you love ’70s and early ’80s tunes from artists like Toto, Christopher Cross, America, Ambrosia and Bread, you’ll want to buy a ticket to the Portland Yacht Rock Festival.

The show is on Friday at Aura.

Yacht Rock is the tongue-in-cheek name given to soft-rock music that is loosely associated with southern California and boating. Mostly, it’s comprised of hit songs that you won’t bang your head to but will certainly sing along with. Best of luck with the those high notes in the refrain of Toto’s “Africa.”

Aura general manager Mark Curdo is a gigantic Yacht Rock fan, and the first planning meeting about the show took place at Three Dollar Dewey’s in January.

Curdo, with the help of guitarist Max Cantlin (Gina and the Red Eye Flight Crew, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Micromasse), assembled an all-star cast of 14 local musicians to perform a slew of classic Yacht Rock songs on Friday night. Advertisement

“I’ve been a fan of light and easy listening rock my whole life,” Curdo said. “Whether people think Yacht Rock is cheesy or not, at the end of the day, this stuff is well done and the musicianship is ridiculous.”

Singer Gina Alibrio. Design by Kate Beever

The idea for the Yacht Rock show has been mapped out in Curdo’s head for a few years. “I wanted to have a few lead singers, I knew certain ones could hit certain notes, and I actually had the whole set list.”

It includes hits like “Reminiscing” by Little River Band, “Ventura Highway” by America, “Midnight at the Oasis” by Maria Muldaur, “Eye In The Sky” by The Alan Parsons Project and “On and On” by Stephen Bishop.

Lead vocal duties will be shared among Don Campbell, Gina Alibrio, Owen Conforte and Kris Rodgers. There will also be a couple of guest vocalists taking the stage.

The band is led by Cantlin and includes Tyler Quist on bass, Chris Sweet on drums, Emma Stanley on trumpet and flugelhorn and Kate Beever on percussion, among several others.

Musician Bitch. Photo by Dana Lynn Pleasant

Boston-based singer-songwriter Bitch (Karen Mould) is performing a Saturday night show on Great Diamond Island, the home of their longtime friend Dini Lamot.

“I’m gonna bring my bass and my violin, sing songs and tell some stories, and it should be really intimate and sweet,” said Bitch (known as Karen only to their mother, according to  a 2022 interview.)

Face the Music: Tough subjects get upbeat treatment on ‘Bitchcraft’

The show will feature a number of songs from the 2022 album “Bitchcraft,” including “Easy Target,” which they wrote in the aftermath of the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, and the synth- and percussion-heavy breakup tune “Pages.”

The album was well-received, and Bitch enjoyed the boost after a several year hiatus from putting out music. “It gave me wind under my broomstick again. It has been a beautiful homecoming into being an artist again.”

They said they’ve also been writing new material. “I actually started laying a couple of songs down in the studio last month. There’s a new project on the horizon.”

Bitch has been performing a one-woman show since the release of “Bitchcraft” and was excited to share that it will have an off-Broadway run in New York City starting this winter.

To get to the show on Saturday, take the Casco Bay Lines Great Diamond Island ferry at 6 p.m. Return trips depart at 10:35 p.m. Tickets are $14 and be purchased at the terminal. Visit cascobaylines.com for details.
