Scimitar 1010

SCIMITAR 1010 REVIEW

There was a time when the multihull tribe was regarded as odd, when trimarans inverted too often - and people were trapped inside - when catamarans couldn't sail to windward, and powercats were the preserve of a macho bar-jumping set with sideburns and soggy fags hanging out of their maw. I remember those days well, the columns and discussions, but the dramas weren't confined to multis.

Reel back to 1997. It was the year Tony Bullimore was plucked alive from his yacht five days after it capsized in the deep Southern Ocean. Thank heavens for his chocolate bar, bottle of water, if not sheer British bulldog determination. It was also when a bunch of colleagues and I awarded the less well-known Scimitar 1010 our prestigious Australian Powerboat of the Year award. Yes, it was a cat and that made waves.

The boat we judged back then was number one. Fast forward 14 years and I'm back aboard the Scimitar 1010. Only this is boat 65! In the interim, I've tested the Scimitar on one other occasion. That was mid-2002 after the clever catamaran underwent its first round of modifications. Actually, it's been more evolution than revolution, as the Scimitar was always ahead of its time.

"In 14 years, we've changed with people labelling our buyers greenies to now considering them mainstream, and many have come out of big-donk bloke's boats," explains Bryan Bradford, who started Scimitar all those years ago and still runs the company today after bringing the construction back inhouse. An Aussie battler, indeed.

SKINNY DIP Designed by Peter Brady, who built the first eight boats before Scimitar Marine retrieved the moulds, the 1010 is a low-drag displacement catamaran. As such, it's a responsible drinker in an age when many at the (river) bar still have a serious rocket-fuel dependency. We hear those with a social conscious are increasingly coming aboard.

Meanwhile, the Scimitar, which is named after a sword from the Ottoman period, flaunts purposeful lines with some sheer that have ensured the cat hasn't become kitty litter in the fashion stakes. All the while, the boat has stood the test of time due also to its build quality and engineering under Bradford.

Construction has evolved, too, and Scimitar now employs SP-High Modulus, a turnkey composite system using foam-coring throughout. There is some carbon in the hardtop struts, as well. This has, along with other mods, progressively removed 400kg from the early models. Cruising buffs can now load-up with victuals and lifestyle gear without affecting performance.

Though we were confined to calm water, the hull didn't have a lightweight resonance. Between the hulls, I also noted a wave-breaker to help prevent tunnel slap when venturing into a headsea. And there's a good deal of freeboard for lift.

GETTING AROUND It helps that Scimitars are built for long-haul cruising and often to survey standards, where they are known to operate in both 2C and 1F (bareboat) charter. You'll find the boats operating as dive and fishing charters in the Solomons and on Moreton Bay - at one point there were seven available for bareboat charter in the Whitsundays - and there are boats on Sydney Harbour, both American coasts, even Guantanamo Bay (the antipathy of torture unless you can see it from your cell window).

Anyway, back when we awarded the Scimitar someone (perhaps me) dubbed it the thinking man's boat. That has proven prophetic. Engineers, systems analysts, quality-control consultants, pilots, even other boatbuilders own Scimitars, says Bradford. Those who jump aboard tend to be analytical, technically minded and well-researched.

There are six repeat owners and one who is on his third Scimitar 1010. So while the boat looks unchanged, perhaps a little blocky and workmanlike with its survey-height aft-ranging rails, the modifications have been significant enough for owners to trade anew.

HULL OF A TIME Unchanged since its release, the Brady-designed hull has a long waterline gained from blunt bows with a near-vertical stem. The displacement boat runs like a fast planing yacht, explains Bradford from his Brisbane digs, as we prepare to cast the lines and venture onto a pacific Moreton Bay.

Accessed by a rather steep ladder, the bridge boasts oodles of U-shaped surround seating (storage below) around a central helm station with twin pedestals and a pop-up dash. Locked down, the dash top doubles as a brilliant lunch table from which to serve a repast. Roll-up the clears and enjoy the views and grub as we did. A great place for sundowners.

As it draws just 0.8 metres and the running gear and propellers are protected by keels, you can beach the Scimitar. Scrape your antifouling, traverse skinny backwaters with reassurance, and head up the creek in case of - perish the thought - a cyclone.  Better still, get your mud crab fix.

DINKY DI At anchor, the layout plays into the hands of the liveaboard boater. Naturally, the five-metre wide cat has a lot of deck space for the obligatory barbecue, a broad moulded swimming platform on which a whole family can hang out, and walkaround decks for safe access to the equally beamy bow.

There's enough transom space to swing a RIB or event tinnie off davits, too. This will appeal to serious cruising types who wish to dispatch those crab traps or fish for barra' in croc country. Other owners have mounted outrigger poles for gamefishing, while yet others prefer the transom naked so they can get rod clearance when reef fishing. Yet others have added cockpit canvas and hardtops.

Bradford makes the point that Scimitar owners tend to option up and in all different ways. They add more fridges, freezers, fish or dive gear, dinghies and davits. But the base boat, at $546,000, is a perfect vehicle on which to build, low maintenance with moulded surfaces, and plenty of that Aussie utility.

The boat's enclosed outdoor loo with shower is one such Australianism - the mighty outback loo - that has drawn scepticism from some quarters. The obvious concern is that you are trumpeting your intentions when heading outdoors to spend a penny.

This might seem an issue at a marina, during a raft-up, or perhaps late at night mid-winter. But in reality, says Bradford, owners who announced their concerns and didn't follow through with a second internal door to the head have never mentioned them again. Besides, as is, the shower isn't compromised. The electric loo is saltwater only but the upside of the 650lt of potable freshwater is that you can last some weeks.

At which point, Bradford points to a little bit of Aussie ingenuity. The deck-mounted water filler is recessed in such a way you can leave the 'lid' off and the mouldings will channel rainwater into the tank. Following the first flush over the decks you could then catch ambient water to boost your supply and keep on boating. The lack of ability to catch water on boats has struck me before. Only you'd want an inline UV filter, in my opinion, to guard against guano-generated bugs. Seagulls like boat decks.

IT'S A GAS Indoors, and on the same cockpit level and through doors that can be fitted with insect screens, is an open-plan saloon with galley to port featuring a trusty gas Smev stove/oven with the twin 9kg gas bottles out in a cockpit locker. The sink is a Clark number, while the fridge is an interesting 12V solid-state eutectic system that draws little power. Add solar power, as our demo boat had, and you're autonomous away from shore- or gennie-power. Lighting is LED.

The saloon opposite can be ordered as an optional convertible twin berth, while forward and side-opening saloon windows ensure plenty of fresh air. You then descend a companionway to port to the new deeper stateroom with enlarged transverse queen-sized owners' bed. The starboard hull has a smaller longitudinal double bed. Storage and headroom were really quite good considering the narrow cat hulls. And each hull also has a small, somewhat pokey single-bed cabin back aft that can be used for additional storage if not stowing a grandkid at holiday time. Hatches ensure ventilation.

You can access the flywheels for the twin Yanmar engines through additional hatches in the aft cabins, but the more frequent access is through a deck hatch. I'm told you can remove and replace an engine as has happened before. Although the strainers and fuel filters were nearby, I felt it somewhat tight to reach the dipsticks for your oil checks and can only imagine having to do that when they were hot.

But there's not a lot to fault on the Scimitar 1010. I've admired the award-winning cat for more than a decade, talked to various owners at anchorages all along the eastern seaboard, and never heard a bad word about them. All that deck space, the up-top living areas, then frugal cruising and easy maintenance make for a great cat for coastal cruising.

PERFORMANCE & HANDLING Base engines are twin 100hp Yanmar diesels that give a top speed of about 20kts and a 15 to 16kts cruise. Yet most owners opt for the twin 180hp four-cylinder common rail BY Series Yanmars that, during our recent demo, give a 23.5kts top speed and 20kts cruise. Pull the reins back to 18kts and consumption drops to 32lt/h for a safe cruising range of 330 nautical miles leaving 10 per cent of the 650lt fuel supply in reserve.

Tellingly, professional skipper Peter Cook delivered a Scimitar 1010 from the Brisbane factory to Tasmania via tempestuous Bass Strait. His testimonial raves about the ride after averaging 24lt/h at 17.2kts. He made it home in seven days and wrote that the seakindly performance was in keeping with a much bigger cat. Another owner went the other way: across the top from Queensland to the Kimberley. So in the 14 years, the Scimitar 1010 has certainly got around.

HIGHS Efficiency from a low-drag displacement hull Low draft and protected running gear Stability aboard generous decks Smart flybridge layout for entertaining New and improved stateroom Time proven and well-built Aussie utility

LOWS Engine access isn't a high point Aft cabins are a tad tight Not quite the wow factor of freshly styled cats

(Facts&figures) SCIMITAR 1010

AT THE WHEEL Whether driving from the flying bridge, or using the internal throttles and autopilot controller from the partial lower internal helm, the trim remains unchanged due to the very nature of the through-water displacement hull. This is a boon to your vision - without a permanent cockpit awning you can just see the starboard corners of the swimplatform when docking - and the cat doesn't throw a lot of water either.

Scimitar 1010 – Boat Review by David Lockwood

By David Lockwood Low-drag and fuel-efficient, the Scimitar 1010 takes the cost out of cruising. Add an impressive fitout and finish and the result is a powercat that cuts it with the best, reports David Lockwood. It was one of those perfect autumn days, balmy and beautiful, with hardly a breath of wind. You couldn’t ask for better conditions for testing the latest low drag, semi-displacement, fuel-efficient cruising cat. After all, the boat is propelled by modest diesel motors, not flagging canvas. The 11m Scimitar is an interesting boat. It travels easily, effortlessly and economically. Its ultra low-drag laminar flow hulls produce a comparatively small wake for a 30-footer. The cat is the answer to a lot of questions confronting modern-day motorboaters. To read complete story – click here for Scimitar 1010 – Boat Review on BoatPoint website

Scimitar 1010 Catamaran Review

scimitar catamaran

Moored amid some of the more glamorous and higher priced luxury cruisers at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show, the Scimitar 1010 looked slightly bashful… and perhaps not the obvious winner of the Cruiser of the Year category announced hours earlier at the show.

But under that somewhat ‘plain Jane’ exterior lies a boat that has been beautifully thought out. Based on a catamaran hull by renowned sailboat designer Peter Brady, the Scimitar is an exceptionally wide boat – 5 metres – and therefore extremely stable.

Also, for such a comparatively short length, the Scimitar is able to provide a huge amount of saloon, cockpit and flybridge space. Confined by the high tunnel and narrow hulls, the accommodation that has been squeezed in is even more amazing. Twin double cabins are located forward, the berths being positioned over the tunnel section, while two additional single bunks are tucked in under the saloon either side. The latter are a little tight (you climb into them like getting into a sleeping bag).

The saloon is great. There’s plenty of room, the central helm station is not in the way and it opens out on to a good-sized cockpit. There’s not a lot of cockpit storage, but what’s there is clever and adequate. I was particularly taken by the transom locker which not only stores the dinghy’s outboard in a vertical position but has facilities for freshwater flushing.

Unusually, the head and shower are accessed from the cockpit rather than from inside the saloon or below deck. This ensures that odours don’t drift through the boat, and that the head can be used without disturbing those sleeping. But then it means you have to go outside of an evening, so it remains to be seen how well this arrangement is accepted.

Foremost in the minds of the owners when commissioning the design was economy of operation, power usage and purchase price. They certainly got that. I took the claimed 20-knot performance from a pair of 100hp Volvo diesels with a grain of salt, saying I’d believe it when I saw it. Well, I believe it ! It does 21 knots and does it easy. More importantly it cruises effortlessly at 17 knots, using around 18 litres of fuel per hour.

The hull rides silky smooth with little indication of motion or the speed it is travelling. It simply glides over the water without the rumble of big diesel power and producing only a low level of wash. On one engine, it will still plane and reach 12 knots. This is simply one very incredible performing cruiser with an enormous amount of on-board living space for its length. It’s not the most glamorous boat on the water, but I for one would be prepared to sacrifice this for the other benefits the Scimitar has to offer.

Prices are around the mid-$200,000 range, depending on engines and options. Along with the low level of maintenance, the low power requirements and the economy of operation, it makes this an attractive craft for charter and boat hire operators as well as weekend cruisers.

Scimitar 1010

Brand New Syndicate Catamaran 100% Australian Designed and Constructed 10% share $99,500 l Monthly fee $928

scimitar catamaran

Since its introduction to the Australian market over 2 decades ago the SCIMITAR brand challenged what was accepted as normal, and developed a reputation for impeccably simple systems, clever design, and incredible fuel efficiency.

While the overall design of the today’s model remains relatively unchanged in appearance, the construction and engineering processes across the entire new range of SCIMITAR Power Catamarans have significantly upgraded. A range of enhancements have also been made to our internal layouts, that modernise and open up spaces offering more customisation than ever before.

Whether you’re out with friends, cruising with the kids, or adventuring with your partner, the SCIMITAR 1010 provides enormous opportunities with a small footprint.

This modernised layout, on a highly acclaimed, stable and fuel- efficient multihull platform, offering single level living, unobstructed upper activity deck with all the great characteristics that SCIMITAR has become so well known for. A low windage profile and reduced air draft means that the 1010 sedan can sneak into places normally only accessible by much smaller vessels.

This all-new SCIMITAR 1010 Sedan is a first for Smart Boating and we truly believe she that perfect addition to our fleet and ideally suited to Pittwater.

Wide open spaces

Featuring the all-new panoramic aft galley layout, the volume of space both inside and out is simply astounding for a boat of this size. With the aft windows open, you can remain connected with the rest of the boat, and everyone onboard, no matter where they are. Whether you’re out with friends, or wanting to keep an eye on the kids, the SCIMITAR 1010 Sedan is a highly versatile entertainer.

The helm station features an innovative flip-down console that becomes an additional countertop when you’re at anchor, while a retractable TV deploys near the windshield and the push of a button.

With beds for 6 people (two doubles and two singles), there is plenty of space and privacy when it comes time to turn in.

Performance (and Economy)

The performance of the SCIMITAR 1010 Sedan is exceptional whether you are looking for sedate cruising at 8 knots or at high speeds in the 15-20 knot range, the ride quality and consumption is leagues ahead of its competitors.

The semi displacement round bilge hull shape, complimented by an active trim control system ensures optimum performance at any speed, regardless of the people and gear you have aboard. Cruising at 15-18 knots, the 1010 Sedan is using a mere 25-35 litres per hour – combined!

Fitted with twin 195hp Yanmar diesel engines, conventional shaft drives and propellers with grounding keels, the 1010 Sedan has a draft of less than 1m, providing for stress free operations in even the most constrained of waterways.

The large roof deck houses the solar panels, which when combined with the large lithium battery bank means there is no need for a generator, resulting in silence at every anchorage, and total self-sufficiency if you want to extend your stay.

Unlike other boat share arrangements, SMART Boating boat shares are an EQUITY purchase with a CAPITAL RETURN to you when the boat is sold at the end of the term.

The SMART Boating syndicate runs until August 2029, after which time the boat will be sold and all owners receive an equal share of the net sale price. If you want or need to exit the syndicate early there is no penalty and we can even help facilitate the sale of your share.

To find out more: Call Martin on 0419 265 273 or David on 0418 211 832.

We’ll be more than happy to show you over the boat and if there is genuine interest, get you and your family out for a test cruise.

Contact us for any other boat-sharing enquiries.

Do you have any questions? Maybe these answers will help.

Am I able to sell my share?

Yes. Your unit in the Trust is a tradable asset, which you are free to on-sell at any time to anyone for any price.

However, the new owner will have to satisfy certain conditions to protect the remaining owners and pay for their familiarisation session on the boat (cost of $250 incl GST + expenses).

Smart Boating will broker a unit for you for a 5% + GST share of the sale price achieved.

How long is the ownership agreement?

The syndicate agreement runs for five years, at which time the boat is sold and the net proceeds are then returned to each owner according to the equity they hold.

This has the benefit of giving you the best resale value and is before maintenance costs would start to increase on the boat. Many owners stay with us and move on to a new yacht or upgrade to a larger model.

Are there any hidden costs?

No, basically everything is included.

The only additional costs to bear in mind are the cost for acquiring and installing additional equipment voted upon by the owners themselves, any insurance excess payments that may become due following a claim, stand-by use fees, any contingency fund top ups needed and, for motorboat owners, the cost of fuel used.

How are the boats equipped?

Every boat is comprehensively fitted out with all the necessary equipment and luxuries, including cooking utensils, bedding, hot/cold showers, stereo with CD player, iPod connection and cockpit speakers, barbecue, electric fridge and icebox, bimini and boom awning, wind, depth and speed instruments, electric flush toilet, electric anchor winch and safety gear.

Who pays for boat damages or unexpected breakdowns?

In the unlikely event of damage, each owner has signed an agreement to pay for any damage they cause to the boat.

The boat will be fully insured, which should limit this liability to a maximum insurance excess of $2,000.

The boat and equipment are initially covered by a manufacturer’s warranty and there is an allowance in the monthly fee that goes into a sinking fund for unpredictable expenses.

Why should Smart Boating manage my boat share?

  • We use carefully selected brands and boats that are ideal for multiple owner use and that we believe will achieve the best resale values in five years’ time.
  • We have an office open seven days a week where your boat is berthed and have a team available for any assistance required with berthing or the boat’s administration and operation.
  • We offer the full range of maintenance services from the marina, which prevents the unreliability of contractors who may not care for your boat as we would.
  • We can offer all syndicate owners additional training from qualified instructors.
  • We have an on-water breakdown service available to you throughout Pittwater/Broken Bay/The Hawkesbury River. (Note – charges may apply for this service.)
  • Your boat will always be cleaned and prepared for your use before you arrive with the tanks full, fridge cold, hatches opened and batteries charged – simply walk on and sail off.

Are yachts or powerboats easier to manage?

This is a common question and really depends on the person at the helm. Luckily for you, a member of the Smart Boating team will be around to jump on board and give you a hand.

Maybe you’re concerned because you don’t know how to sail? To be honest, if you have enough skills to manage a motorboat it would take very little to gain the skills you need to manage a yacht . All our yachts have reliable and convenient in-mast furling.

Our ‘learn to sail a yacht’ courses are great value and perfect to get you up to standard. Or we can arrange one-on-one training to suit your specific needs.

And talking of sailing… have you considered how relaxing sailing is? But can you find peace, quiet and performance on a powerboat, too? Yes, of course you can!

Our Integrity 380 powerboat gets you where you need to go quietly and quickly, at up to 14 knots. This easy to handle motor cruiser boasts the space and comfort you’d expect from a 36+ footer!

Can I bring my dog on board?

No. To ensure the vessel is kept at a high standard and for the safety of the dog and comfort of the other owners, we don’t allow you to bring any animals on board.

Can I moor anywhere?

Yes – and we even have dedicated Smart Boating buoys in designated areas.

Can I stay in the marina overnight?

Yes, absolutely.

Marine Structures set to make waves nationally and internationally

Scimitar – a true-blue aussie power cat brand revived, the scimitar brand of catamarans is poised for renaissance..

Scimitar, the iconic Australian multihull brand which flourished from 1997 to 2012, has been re-imagined and re-engineered by some of the country’s leading naval architects and ship builders.

scimitar catamaran

Tommy Ericson, CEO of the Aus Ships Group , based at Rivergate Marina & Shipyard , Brisbane, is the creative impetus behind the project and Director of the newly formed Scimitar Catamarans.

The multi-awarded Ericson said he was inspired to revive an updated version of the Scimitar 1010 because of his own experience with the brand and his close ties with the co-founder, Bryan Bradford.

The Scimitar 1010 was the brainchild of two experienced boaters and businessmen, Bryan Bradford and Greg Byth. They took their concept to the esteemed catamaran designer/builder, Peter Brady to bring their ideas to fruition and the first boat entered the water in 1997.

That year, it won Australian Boat of the Year and attracted a larger number of orders.

Unique in the marine industry, the Scimitar 1010 Flybridge was the brand’s single model, named for its 10.10 metre hull length.

Up until 2012 when manufacturing ceased, 65 units of the Scimitar 1010 were built for Australia private and commercial clients, as well as number exported to the US and South Pacific.

“Having known Bryan for many years, our conversations always came around to the Scimitar and how successful it had been,” Ericson explained.

“I spent some time sketching ideas for how to ‘modernise’ the boat and bring it into the current day, whilst still maintaining the classic, non-pretentious look, feel and practicality. This led to our acquisition of Scimitar, the moulding, tooling and technical files relating to the construction.”

Concurrently, Ericson located a second-hand Scimitar in Papua New Guinea and purchased it as a test platform to implement the upgrades and improvements he had in mind.

“Doing the delivery voyage from Port Moresby to Brisbane in 2018 through some challenging conditions gave me the real-world experience and exposure to the performance and capability of the vessel.”

scimitar catamaran

As Ericson attests, catamarans are enjoying record sales, as Australians realise their Bucket List dream to get out on the water and make memories with their families in a safe, secure “bubble” enjoying the “blue therapy” benefits of stress-free time surrounded by nature.

“Having worked in the industry for 25 years, and boated on all manner of boat types, I have always had an appreciation for catamarans. They offer great stability, an extra-large platform, shallow draft and are very efficient.”

Queensland is the gateway to east coast cruising and the glorious Whitsundays and Ericson sees great potential for Scimitar in its home market.

Aiming for re-launch in 2022, with their official debut at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, Scimitar Catamarans will present two models and 3 layouts initially.

“One of the advantages of having a Marine Design Studio in house is that we have had the ability to workshop and develop and number of concepts efficiently and effectively without the need to engage external consultants and incur significant cost,” said Ericson.

“We presented concepts to the existing Scimitar owners’ network which resulted in the two models. The 1010 flybridge is similar in look and configuration as the original boats with a number of improvements in equipment, construction methodology and subtle styling upgrades.

“The second model is a modern twist on the ‘Moreton Bay Cruiser’ which is essentially a 1010 sedan without the flybridge. The saloon layout has been flipped from the flybridge model offering an open-plan layout with lower helm station.

“A lower air draft, due to the removal of the flybridge, will appeal to those needing to pass under bridges or not wishing to scale the flybridge ladder.”

The flybridge hardtop or the upper utility deck in the case of the sedan, accommodates a significant solar array of up to 1,500 W which provides self-sufficient, silent and environmentally friendly operations without the need for a generator.

At a cruise speed of 16 knots, the 1010 sedan uses less than 30 litres per hour total fuel consumption making them not only cost effective to run but extremely environmentally conscious for a vessel of its size.

There are currently three vessels in various stages of construction: Hull 66 is the new model sedan being built as a demonstrator, Hull 67 is a flybridge model on order for an Australian client and Hull 68 is a flybridge model being built for an existing Scimitar owner.

According to Ericson, the vessels will be suited to the private and bare boat commercial markets. Several popular Scimitar 1010 power cats currently operate in the Whitsunday charter market. “They’re ideally suited to families and those seeking a stable, safe and very efficient platform with superior seakeeping capabilities.

“They will provide good cruising speeds of 15 to 20 knots, two double cabins and two single bunks, large modern galley and a spacious, unobstructed cockpit for entertaining. Fully-protected propellers and a draft of 1-metre mean that owners can access places normally only available to trailer boats.”

Key to the promotion and uptake of the new generation Scimitar is the existing network of owners, and the tremendous goodwill the brand enjoys in boating circles.

“There is a great deal of interest in the new models,” said Ericson. “We’ve had excellent response so far. The brand is well regarded, and former owners have wonderful memories of their Scimitar cruising adventures. It makes sense to ride that wave of positivity and continue the tradition.”

The Scimitar 1010 sedan and flybridge models will be on show at the 2022 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, 19 to 22 May on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Spotlight: Scimitar 1010

The scimitar 1010 is a queensland-made powered catamaran that aims to please all.

Crowd pleaser

Powered catamarans, like the Scimitar 1010, hold a special place in the Australian recreational boating scene with versatility that many monohulls just cannot match.

As Bryan Bradford, managing director of Queensland's Scimitar Marine, puts it the Scimitar 1010 ticks the boxes of long-range cruising, liveaboard, fishing, daytripper, and even commercial craft.

"It does everything very well," said Bradford, "and while you may find more fishing-oriented vessels, for example, the Scimitar can be optioned up purely for game fishing with extras such as livebait and killtanks, rodholders, downriggers and so on."

The Scimitar 1010 made its debut in 1997 and became an instant hit winning that year's Australian Cruiser of the Year Award.

Since then, Scimitar Marine, which is based in the Brisbane suburb of Aquatic Paradise on Moreton Bay, has built 58 Scimitar 1010s for varying applications including commercial use from the tropics down the coast to Sydney, Melbourne, and even Hobart.

"There is one in America and another in the Solomon Islands too," said Bradford, who says his company is averaging six to seven builds a year with a peak annual construction of eight boats.

Scimitar Marine claims its 1010 offers improved fuel and performance efficiencies from lighter construction materials and modern building techniques in the advanced-design twin hull. Draft of less than a metre takes the cat to shallow destinations, plus there's prop protection from full-length keel hulls that allow for safe beaching.

FUEL MISER From the outset, Scimitar has aimed for fuel efficiency in the 1010 design, and this aspect has now become a high-priority in many consumers' new-boat purchases. Thus, this cat is ahead of the times.

The 1010 uses less than 25 per cent of the fuel consumed by many planning hulls of similar size, Bradford explains, with the efficiency achieved by reducing drag using a fine-entry laminar-flow hull that produces a very low internal compression wave between the hulls.

A popular engine choice for the Scimitar 1010 has been twin 125hp Yanmar diesels, which have a combined fuel flow of 22 to 25 litres per hour at ideal cruising speeds of around 16 to 17kts. Yet the displacement hulled cat still turns in a top speed of around 25kts with larger engines if needs be.

On the accommodation front, there's plenty more to embrace. Headroom is a highlight throughout the 1010 with two-metre tall people able to move around freely in the two double-cabins.

The Scimitar 1010 has three living areas: the cockpit, saloon and flybridge. With a broad beam of five metres and an overall length of 11m, space is wherever you tread. And the outdoor head is a great feature when entertaining.

The cockpit and flybridge can each accommodate 10 people, pursuant to local waterways laws, while eight can sit around the dinette in the saloon, opposite the galley with oven, griller, cooktop, double-bowl stainless steel sink and fridge/freezer.

The Scimitar 1010 has a base price of $473,000 but Bradford says most people spend in the mid to high-$500,000 range with modern electronics and larger engine packages. Options include flatscreen TVs, microwave, additional cupboards and larger fridge/freezers.

Mojo was our home for 8 days and suited our needs perfectly. She was reliable and well-appointed, immaculately presented at our arrival, and a great vessel for first-time bare-boaters. Great for relaxing on the foredeck, fishing, snorkeling or just cruising and enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Whitsundays.

What The Media Say…

What this boat does best is cruise at a good clip without breaking the bank. It could fulfil duties as diverse as gamefishing, long-range cruising, charter work and liveaboard pad...

BoatSales.com.au

I've admired the award-winning cat for more than a decade, talked to various owners at anchorages all along the eastern seaboard, and never heard a bad word about them. All that deck space, the up-top living areas, then frugal cruising and easy maintenance make for a great cat for coastal cruising.

Trade-a-boat

The reborn catamaran looks very similar to the original but contains a number of improvements and engineering tweaks aimed at enhancing the liveaboard experience without losing any of the charms that helped the brand sell more than 60 hulls. We loved the original, so the similarities of the new Scimitar 1010 to the old one are important.

CUTTING-EDGE CATS: 2023 SCIMITAR CATAMARANS MODEL RANGE EXPANDS

CUTTING-EDGE CATS: 2023 SCIMITAR CATAMARANS MODEL RANGE EXPANDS

For local boat manufacturer Scimitar, 2023 is proving to be another busy year for the team, following the relaunch of the all Australian-made power catamaran at Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show last year.

With 3 new vessels completed in 2022, production is well underway on the latest model to be launched at SCIBS 2023, alongside the first of the production model Minitar catamaran tender.

“The response from the market and the industry has been very encouraging for the relaunch of the brand, with clients showing strong interest in the locally manufactured vessels, built with purpose for Australian conditions. With the launch of our flagship flybridge model in December last year (which has already had over 1000 nautical miles pass under her keel), we have been working on the next flybridge model which will be aligned to those customers seeking a super-efficient, easy to use, Australian made vessel at a competitive price point. We will have both vessels on display at the 2023 Sanctuary Cove Boat Show, so customers will have the opportunity to compare both levels of specifications first hand,” comments Scimitar Boats Director Tommy Ericson.

Scimitar are also working on 2 larger models aimed at those looking to venture further afield, increase their range or to accommodate their growing families. The 1770 (representing the length of 17.70 metres) measures just shy of 60ft and proves to be a real game changer in the power catamaran space with expansive accommodation, amenity and serious long range ocean going capability.

To complement the 1010 and the 1770 models, a mid-sized model is also well advanced in its development with a number of existing Scimitar owners showing considerable interest in a larger version of their beloved 1010.

Further detail of both of these models will be released on Scimitar’s website www.scimitarboats. com.au and at SCIBS 2023.

MINITAR TENDER

scimitar catamaran

Although by no means the largest of vessels featured in this publication, the Scimitar 3.75m (12ft) catamaran tender affectionately known as the “Minitar” is creating its own following amongst boaters looking for the ultimate tender.

Developed as a result of a lack of options on the market, the Scimitar design team (a subsidiary of the Aus Ships Group) applied their expertise and years of experience to come up with a tender that ticks a lot of boxes; lightweight (less than 100kg); stable (thanks to the catamaran hull form); shallow draft; good internal volume; efficiently powered.

The pre-production model was on display at SCIBS in 2022, and has now progressed to full production. Following the same engineered composite construction as the 1010’s, the Minitars are infused closed cell foam cored with a gelcoat external finish.

The Minitar is already in demand with more than 5 on order from Moreton Bay boaters, who have spied the pre-production model on the water and enquired directly.

Models will be on display at the 2023 Sanctuary Cove Show so be sure to stop by at the Scimitar display to take a look.

Our promise to you: To give you straightforward systems that just work. Wide open spaces, and the freedom to make your Scimitar totally yours.

Our commitment to minimal environmental impact is embedded in our design philosophy. From the construction, to the fuel-efficient design, and the onboard electrical systems we build. We engineer efficiency.

Scimitar Power Catamarans is a name synonymous with Australian ingenuity, efficiency, sea worthiness and practicality beyond its years, and well above its size.

Scimitars leave a small footprint, in the water and on the world.

Our history.

Established in the mid 1990’s, the original Scimitar 1010 was developed by a team of experienced professionals and boaties who were chasing the seamless blend of… efficiency, stability, safety, shallow draft, and large deck spaces in an affordable platform.

What the team developed, the market loved, awarding it the powerboat of the year when it launched in 1997.

Until 2012, under the stewardship of Bryan and Linda Bradford, Scimitar delivered 65 vessels to a range of clients across the world, developing a following and respect the envy of many much larger brands.

After a few years of hibernation, Bryan and Linda entrusted the brand, the IP and the tooling to Tommy Ericson, a maritime industry professional of more than 20 years, to bring the Scimitar 1010 back to the market. The sale of Scimitar was completed with an unwritten level of responsibility to ensure that the next generation scimitar becomes the new benchmark in Australian-built power catamarans – and those that know the boat realise that is no easy achievement.

Since 2017, Tommy and his team at Aus Ships Group have been working to modernise the look, integrate new technologies, systems and equipment all whilst ensuring the functionality, reliability and feel of the Scimitar remains.
