Sparrow 16 vs Dovekie
A round 1 mini-cruiser madness match-up.
Here’s in interesting match-up. Sure, they seem like very different boats, but both are lightweight, trailerable sailboats used for camp-cruising—and really, how many designs by the eccentric genius Phil Bolger fit neatly into a category?
Long before this Mini-Cruiser Madness spectacle we referred to the Ron Holder-designed Sparrow 16 as a “sleeper.” If life were fair the surprisingly lively, exceptionally accommodating Sparrow 16 would upset a few boats and find itself in the Sweet 16 or even the Elite 8 of this contest. But then we only have one vote, and the Dovekie is an iconic design with its own remarkable virtues.
Here’s what we said about the Sparrow in our review article (Issue #52): What surprised us was how well the Sparrow responded in the light breeze. We were making progress even in the lulls—a nice track behind us and barely a ripple from the hull. The Sparrow seemed to slip through the water with very little disturbance. Helm was perfect, with just a touch of weather pull in winds up to seven knots.
With a shoal keel we anticipated her performance would suffer when hard on the wind. This was not always true, the Sparrow would actually point fairly high and make good progress to windward. It was only with increasing heel that you could tell her shallow keel was losing traction. Overall performance was good—and much better than we’d expected.

Sparrow 16 were build around 1980 in Washington. About a hundred were launched - 16' trailer sailing boats with shoal keels. We are looking for owners and former owners who will share their experiences.
Sparrow 16 I have owned my Sparrow 16 (hull #19) for since August 2008. I love it. I am at least the 3rd owner and bought it in the Spokane WA area. As soon as I bought mine, a second came up for sale in the same area. I haven't had it out too many times to test it yet but I know it can sail quite well in light winds. I'm looking forward to taking on the big lakes of north Idaho next summer. I find it pretty easy to rig and maintain. Not having a centerboard means much less maintenance. There are no spreaders and no backstay so setting up at the ramp is easy. The keel presents a bit of a problem for launching. My solution was to add a telscoping tongue that increases its length by 7' just for launching. The most definitive review of it I've found was done by the magazine Small Craft Advisor. I highlty recommend it. You can order it at their website. Best Christine

Hi Christine! Okay, you still have your boat! I picked up two photos you may have posted on Shorty Pens website. Your email address did not work so I feared you had moved on... As you may know, I've put a web site for Sparrow 16 up and established a yahoo group sparrow16 if you care to join. Thanks for making contact, Bill
Bill, Can you send me your email address using a private message? I cannot send them yet since I'm so new here. Also, can you send me the link to your website and the yahoo group? Thanks!

That was originally a Guppy designed by Ron Holder so it should be a nice boat. Combined Melon Marine and Northshore Marine only around 150 were built so a rare find. Just be mindful of the lack of a kick-up rudder and the need for around 3 feet of water to float it off the trailer when launching and retrieving due to the fixed shoal keel.

Review of Sparrow 12
Basic specs..
The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.
The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.
The Sparrow 12 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.
The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.51 - 0.61 meter (1.67 - 1.97 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
Sailing characteristics
This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.
What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?
The capsize screening value for Sparrow 12 is 3.22, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.
What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?
The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 4.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Sparrow 12 is about 38 kg/cm, alternatively 216 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 38 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 216 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.
Sailing statistics
This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.
What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?
What is a Ballast Ratio?
What is Displacement Length Ratio?
SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 23.49
Maintenance
When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 6m 2 (64 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.
If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Sparrow 12 Awesomest boat ever. I learned to sail on the S/V Jaundice over the summer of 2007, and found it to be stable, fun, and easy for a beginner to handle. Performance into the wind is pretty horrible, but the 150 lb keel kept it upright and sailing in 20 kt winds and 3 foot seas. Plus it's the same color yellow as its namesake, which ...

Tried to launch Bill's Sparrow 12 first (it is the boat with the rounded top cabin), but the water wasn't deep enough to float it above the axle.
