Mysterious superyacht docks in Cairns
A code of silence has fallen over the arrival in cairns of the $176 million venus superyacht owned by the widow of the late steve jobs, laurene powell..
By Isabella Guzman Gonzalez
The distinctive vessel docked in Cairns last Friday (August 25), for maintenance. Details on how long the vessel will remain at the Cairns Marina and what works will be done are under wraps.
According to Automatic Identification System (AIS) trackers, Venus departed the port of Papeete, French Polynesia on August 13, and reached Cairns after 11 days of voyage.
The 78.2-m long vessel was custom-made for the Apple co-founder. It was officially launched in 2012, one year after his death, and is now owned by his widow.
The yacht is completely private and not available for charter. Although it’s one of the most recognised yachts, very little is known about it and how the inside of the vessel looks.
With a very modern look, Venus has a gleaming silver paint job and stainless-steel details, a long forward deck and a row of windows running from the bow past amidships.
Throughout the years the yacht, designed by Netherlands company Feadship, has been surrounded by secrecy. According to BOAT International the company isn’t allowed to comment on its high-profile vessel. Nor are staff or suppliers.
The Cairns Marina and the Superyacht Group Great Barrier Reef were not able to comment on the vessel’s stop in Cairns.

The yacht’s interior has never been published, and the details available are in short supply. There is a lot of intrigue as to what the yacht’s interior looks like, thanks to the famous name who commissioned it.
One can only imagine that the interior reflects Apple’s slogan “Think Different,” with an eye-catching and minimalist interior to reflect the design of the yacht’s exterior.
It is known that the bridge is lined with 27-inch Mac computer screens, with large cabin windows that are almost floor to ceiling, with a main living area. There is accommodation for 12 guests in 6 suites and 22 crew.
The VENUS yacht has a unique exterior, reflecting the sleekness and eye-catching nature of Apple’s products, and was designed by Philippe Starck.
Feadship was commissioned to execute the build. Everything about the exterior is eye-catching and unique, from the silver paint job to the stainless steel details to the line of rectangular windows that run from the bow.
The structure of VENUS features 90-degree angles, an axe bow for piercing waves, and a flat and somewhat unusually squared stern that opens to reveal a tender garage.
There is no visible radar arch or satellite equipment, as all the equipment is hidden within a box that keeps the VENUS exterior appearance clean and sleek.
Specifications
The 78m VENUS yacht has an 11.8m beam and a 3.1m draft that makes the boat appear low-slung in the water.
The 2 MTU engines give VENUS a top speed of 20.5kn and a cruising speed of 18kn. She displaces 1,876 GT and can cover 5500 nautical miles.
She has an annual running cost of $10-$15 million and was rumored to cost $100 million to build. VENUS was refitted in 2015 at Monaco Marine.

The Venus superyacht is one of the most expensive and luxurious boats in the world.
And on Friday, the $120million vessel owned by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' widow Laurene Powell Jobs docked in Cairns, Australia.
It's unclear if Laurene, 59, was on the scene, but various staffers were pictured loading Venus with supplies.
The superyacht looked like the picture of perfection as it sat in the crystal green and blue waters of Queensland .
At 255ft long, it dwarfed several smaller yachts that were docked nearby.

The spectacular sea vessel was last spotted in November, 2022, when Laurene enjoyed a holiday in Barbados.
The glamorous socialite had spent the afternoon swanning around the luxury 5-star hotel Sandy Lane's restaurants, shops and spas.
Powell was left widowed after Jobs passed away, age 56, from complications from pancreatic cancer in October 2011. They had three children together and Powell is also step-mother to Jobs' daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs.

When Jobs died, most of his assets passed on to his wife, making her one of the 50 richest people in the world.
Powell married Jobs in 1991 - ten years before the release of the first iPod - and now manages a fortune estimated to be worth $12.3 billion according to Forbes.
In addition to the Venus, she owns two private jets, four large real estate properties and a large stake in the Walt Disney Company.
The Venus was Steve Jobs' final masterpiece, after he commissioned it in 2008 and worked painstakingly on the design with superstar French product designer Philippe Starck.
He did not survive to see the ship completed and launched, dying of pancreatic cancer a year before work was finished in 2012.

In his final years, Steve Jobs told his biographer Walter Isaacson: 'I know that it's possible I will die and leave Laurene with a half-built boat. But I have to keep going on it. If I don't, it's an admission that I'm about to die.'
Starck helped design the sleek 256-foot long vessel, and Jobs enlisted the chief engineer of the Apple Stores to design reinforced glass for its walls, according to his biographer Walter Isaacson.
Starck spoke about Venus in an interview with French Vanity Fair, explaining the yacht houses six bedrooms along with communication systems between the kids' rooms in the front and the adult quarters in the rear.

'Steve wanted to be sure that the teenagers could be set up in the front of the boat when he was at the back and vice-versa. He was obsessed with silence,' Starck said.
'In his home, children did not make noise, nor the dog, nor his wife … no one made any noise, ever.'

Situated between two World Heritage listed natural wonders, Cairns is a flourishing homeport that offers safety, excellent service and a sublime setting for the global superyacht fleet.
Nestled between the Daintree Wet Tropics Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns is ideally positioned to provide adventurous escapes in a sublime tropical climate. This is also the gateway to the inspiring South Pacific islands, with Papua New Guinea just a three-day sail away, so many superyachts choose Cairns as their base for exploring the wider beauty of this region of the world.
In the heart of the city is Cairns Marlin Marina, offering large berthing facilities up to 140m in length and advanced infrastructure, backed by a diligent team with a wealth of experience in the superyacht industry. The Marina is just a 10-minute drive from the international airport and a leisurely 5-minute walk along the beautiful esplanade from luxury resorts and exquisite restaurants. Attached to the Marina is the iconic Shangri-la hotel, while the Crystalbrook collection offers further opulent accommodation for guests wishing to spend time in the city.
An Endless Source of Inspiration
As a destination for thrill-seeking superyacht owners and guests, Cairns has it all and more. The region is perhaps most synonymous with its location at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Despite largely misplaced perceptions, the Reef remains a spectacular kaleidoscopic diving experience and the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem. The effects of bleaching and cyclones are a thing of the past, a natural occurrence from which the Great Barrier Reef always recovers and there is nowhere else in the world that guests can explore waters containing 1625 species of fish and over 600 strands of hard and soft coral.
The sheer volume of the Reef (344,400km2) means that even while some areas are in the process of recovery, the Great Barrier Reef remains the largest and most diverse Reef experience in the world. There is no better place to visit for genuine marine exploration, and now superyachts even have the rare opportunity to make history and join Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef in survey projects on the 40% of the Reef which remains undocumented.
Not all of the adventure is concentrated at sea, and Cairns is blessed with a second UNESCO Heritage Listed natural wonder – the Daintree Rainforest. As the world’s oldest rainforest, the Daintree provides unique opportunities for natural and indigenous experiences that would enhance any superyacht charter. Running for thousands of kilometres alongside Queensland’s tropical coastline, the Daintree adds extra adventure within close proximity to your superyacht.
There are an extraordinary range of diverse activities to engage in. Just a 10-minute tender cruise from Cairns Marlin Marina is the Mandingalbray Ancient Aboriginal Tour, reached by an exotic voyage through the mangroves (looking out for crocodiles along the way). Here, you will be given a warm and touching Aboriginal welcome before immersing yourself in their culture and learn about the history and traditional uses of the land. Deeper into the Daintree, the Kuranda Rainforest Journeys offer high-octane tours on ATVs through the rainforest ravines, and even the chance to come face to face with a wild Cassowary, the dinosaur-like bird. These are just a couple of the many enthralling activities that can bring you closer to Australia’s magnificent natural beauty. In Cairns, boredom is never an option. With plenty to do all-year-round, this is comfortable setting for crew and an inspiring destination for guests.
Understated Luxury
Unlike the jet set shores of the Côte d'Azur or the Costiera Amalfitana, Cairns offers luxury in a more laid-back and low-key culture. This is not to say that luxury in Cairns is confined, far from it, only that it is embedded in a more subtle environment that generates a relaxed atmosphere more fitting for a long-term stay.
In fact, this exact culture has sparked rave reviews from superyacht owners visiting the region, who have felt a sense of freedom in being able to walk among the town without the need for a security detail following behind them. This is one of the great strengths of Cairns in having an island-culture but the security of a developed first world country. Whether recognised by the locals or not, superyacht owners are guaranteed peace and privacy during their stay.
With Cairns Marlin Marina situated in the centre of the town, all of the luxury amenities lie within just a short walk. There are an array of opulent resorts and hotels, from the Shangri-La Hotel overlooking the Marina to the state-of-the-art Crystalbrook Collection resorts based along the Esplanade. Should you wish to venture north of Cairns to experience the tropical paradise of Port Douglas, Crystalbrook also runs the superyacht marina based there, so you can be assured of a high-quality bespoke service.
A Superyacht Service
If the Reef and Rainforest are the natural wonders of Cairns, then there is one further wonder that warrants a mention. The people.
The Superyacht Group Great Barrier Reef is a wonderful community of highly experienced people with shining individual personalities, all connected through their shared determination to deliver a high quality of service to visiting superyachts. From arranging airport pickups through Elliott’s Limousines to navigating the entry process, local superyacht agents go to extraordinary lengths to accommodate your every need. Many of the members have extensive experience working onboard superyachts, and know what is required to make Captains, crew, and guests comfortable during their stay.
World-class Superyacht Infrastructure
An integral component of Cairns’ rise as a homeport is its growing refit capabilities. A strong history in naval and commercial shipping industries has translated into specialist superyacht expertise.
BSE Maritime Solutions is an all-encompassing marine facility that is home to Bessy, the world’s largest Travelift at 1,120t. Neighbouring shipyard Norship is known for its incredible in-house capabilities that are exported throughout the South Pacific. This includes full engine testing facilities and manufacturing capabilities for reverse engineering that eliminate the need to import, parts thus cutting lead times and costs.
