Review of Bristol 43.3

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 606.0 liter fresh water capacity.

CentreBoard

The Bristol 43.3 is equipped with a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.49 - 1.59 meter (4.89 - 5.19 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Bristol 43.3 is typically equipped with an inboard Westerbeke diesel engine

The fuel tank has a capacity of 454.0 liters (119 US gallons, 99 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Bristol 43.3 is 1.73, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Bristol 43.3 is about 268 kg/cm, alternatively 1501 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 268 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1501 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 55m 2 (592 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Bristol 43.3

Bristol 43.3 is a 43 ′ 2 ″ / 13.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Ted Hood and Dieter Empacher and built by Bristol Yachts between 1986 and 1994.

Drawing of Bristol 43.3

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Engine information, general description.

If you are looking for a shallow draft sailboat, easy to sail and with a pedigree which is not found in boats built nowadays, then Endurance a 1990 Bristol 43.3 may be the boat for you. One of the last 43.3’s built, this lovely Ted Hood design has always had exceptional care and has been continually upgraded to maintain her good looks and systems.

In 2021 her hull was Alexsealed by one of CT’s premier boatyards and at the same time her mast and boom were stripped and also Alexsealed Her hull is Stars and Stripes blue which is the perfect color to compliment Bristol’s extra high toe rails for which they were famous. A complete list of recent upgrades are in the full specs section of this listing. Whether you are leisurely day sailing and making use of the in mast furling main and bow thruster or heading out on a cruise and use the 8kw generator to power the two zone air conditioning, Endurance is a boat that can do both, easily managed by a couple, yet brawny enough for when the going gets tough.

other than what I have learned in the last 6 - 9 months. However, my signifigant other and I have decided in the next 5 years we are going to sell everything and .

Our goal is to for a few years and continuing to while prepping for and cruising the world, or at least the and .

Requirements are a large queen berth situated so neither of us have to climb over each other (her #1 as a matter of fact), ability to coastal or sail, and of course a sturdy with good sailing characteristics.

We have examined many , first serious contender was the 42 (which is still on the list). We then looked at the factory boats but they all look like their woodwork was done by Ikea. I like catamarans (lots of room and fast) but alot of .

So, after much time and with the input of a very salty friend I arrived at the Bristol 43.3. She is a very good sailing (thanks Me Hood), center board that will allow shallow access, nice design with HUGE aft stateroom and berth.

The boats I am seeing have already had the and roller furling/in mast/boom reefing added, so they are good to go out of the box.

What I am looking for is anyone that has experience with these boats, and to get their impressions, things to look for, things that go bad, areas of concern, as well as how well does she sail, how fast, etc.

Any help any of you have would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Phil

to joint on that boat as on all Bristols is subject to leaking and needs to be maintained. It is screwed together with self tapping machine screws under the toe rail. The screws have a tendency to loosen with age and the joint tends to leak. Externally caulking the toe rail will not eliminate the issue. Other than that, a boat of that size and complexity has the same issues as any.

Good luck,

Bristol 43.3

  • Add to quote

My wife and I are looking for a boat to use for extended, offshore cruising. Typically, the crew will consist of two moderately experienced sailors. We are particularly interested in either a Bristol 43.3 or a 47.7. Any experiences, thoughts or areas of concern about either the 43.3 or 47.7 would be appreciated. Thanks Bruce

My wife and I have been looking at the Bristol 41.1 as a cruising boat. We would be coastal cruising and some offshore work. What I''m trying to resolve is the centerboard issue. Is it an asset or liability? I''m sure Ted Hood has designed a good sailing and comfortable boat, but have you had any feedback on the ceterboard issue for the Bristols. Dennis

You really want to take this question to the Bristol email group - also check the archives for past conversations. We came close to buying a 35.5 several years ago, and I recall not hearing anything bad about the centerboard, although we felt the keel model would work better for us. You can also search the web for reviews of Bristols/see if there''s one on Practical Sailor/ check this link at: http://members.aol.com/bristolyht/also check with brokers who have specialized in Bristols - we worked with folks at Bristol Yachts (http://www.bristolyachts.com/) who seemed to know the 35.5 inside out. Finally you might call Little Harbor (http://www.lhyb.com/), as I believe Ted Hood is still around and you could never get better info than right from the horse''s mouth, so to speak. Good luck.

ON EAGLES WINGS is a very accommodating cruising yacht with two comfortable sleeping cabins, each with a head and shower. The large salon and galley area is very comfortable. The yacht has a large center cockpit that can easily accommodate six.,

You may board the vessel from the stern where there is a boarding/swim ladder or through the port or starboard side gates. The decks are wide and designed so as to be easy to move about while under way or at rest. ON EAGLES WINGS has tall life line stanchions to add to the safety while under way.

You enter the vessel from the cockpit through a centerline companionway, into the salon. At the base of that companionway ladder is the galley to starboard and the navigation station to port.

Starting forward, the guest stateroom has large V-berths with a filler stored over-head that will convert this area into one large double berth. This stateroom has good headroom, light and ventilation, as does the interior of the entire yacht. Remember too, this stateroom is air conditioned, as is the interior of the entire yacht for your comfort. The stateroom has good storage space provided by bins, hanging locker, and storage lockers outboard above the berths. There is an entry directly into the head and shower.

The forward head and shower is to port with double entry; it may be locked off and made private to the guest stateroom, or be made available as the day head. It is equipped with manual head, Y-valve, and holding tank with a Tank Watch system. There is a vanity with sink and pressure hot & cold water, mirror, and storage space, and additional storage space to starboard across from the forward head.

The salon is very accommodating with a large L-shaped settee to port that converts into a double sleeping berth and two comfortable barrel chairs to starboard with good storage space behind. The dining table in centerline mounted with double drop leafs. The table has silverware and bottle storage space inside. There are fans throughout the vessel to move air. The Jensen AM/FM/CD player has Cybernet speakers throughout for good sound. There is a JVC flat screen TV in the salon. The salon has two opening ports, two hatches, a dorade vent, and companionway screens.

Two zone, reverse cycle air conditioning; salon and forward ststeroom, and aft stateroom,

The U-shaped galley is in the aft, starboard most corner of the salon, convenient to the dining table and the cockpit. It is well equipped with storage and countertop space and has all of the equipment necessary for meal prep....

Frigoboat refrigeration (separate freezer area) 2010.

Propane Shipmate three burner stove, oven and broiler.

Xintex S-2A propane fume detector and control system.

Deep, double S/S sink with pressure hot & cold water.

The forward facing navigation station is in the port side companionway that leads back to the master stateroom. It has a good sized chart table and lot's of storage drawers. The engine and generator access is along this companionway as well as from the galley, salon, aft stateroom, and from the master head shower.

The master stateroom is aft with comfortable centerline queen bed ( custom mattress )  and lot's of good storage space. This is one of the better staterooms in a boat of this size. As mentioned earlier, good light and ventilation and headroom abound in a Bristol designed by Ted Hood. The master head has a separate shower stall. The toilet is the Lectrasan waste treatment type that does not need a holding tank.

ON EAGLES WINGS has 12 volt and 110 volt onboard systems. There is a 30 amp shore power cord as well as phone and TV hookup. The generator is a Fisher Panda 6 kW is a sound shield ( seven years old).

  1. BRISTOL 43.3

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).

  9. Bene 44CC vs Bristol 43.3?

43 posts · Joined 2021. #4 · Oct 17, 2022. Seems like the PHRF rating for the Bristol 45.5 or 43.3 is a little lower than the Bene 44CC (117 vs 126 - though the numbers do vary). I have to say I am surprised as I would have thought the Bene would have been faster. I guess much higher SA than the Bene to make up for the 1k extra lbs.
