Cole 26 to buy or not to buy..

I'd be also interested to know where the Cole 26 was derived from. Firstly I'd forget the cream one for $25000 , way overpriced . Also ad says designed and built by John Cole? Whose he. Some Cole 26 's advertised are actually Cole Contessas 25 's( see red one in Townsville on yachthub) which are well respected. The other one you show plus this which looks a steal. https://www.boatsales.com.au/boats/photogallery?Id=SSE-AD-5666097&Index=1 seem to be perhaps derived from Cole quarter tonners . Sorry hopefully someone here has first hand knowledge.

Thanks for the feed back. As far as I know Peter cole is the designer. Information on these is hard to come buy. I think I'm about 95% sure I'm going to buy the blue one. I haven't had any been feed back from my enquires so far.

corz said.. I'm looking at purchasing my first sail boat, a Cole 26. Does any body have any expernace with one. My only concern is that the cockpit looks unprotected and small for a 26footer. Does anybody have any thoughts? The Cole 26 was Peter Coles take on a quarter tonner. Early ones where cold moulded timber like that superb example that sold on Gumtree a few weeks back for 2 grand! These are race boats and the cockpits are small because the crew should be on the rails. The Cole 26 was always a more expensive entry into 26 foot yachts because they were a bit up market. I owned a M&W 26 quarter tonner for a few years and it was an excellent boat to sail. Mine did not have headroom and an inboard diesel which was it's only down points. I presume it's this one your looking at? https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/safety-bay/sail-boats/cole-26-yacht/1202654049 This one seems well fitted out and has an inboard and folding prop. Sails look to be hanked on but that's OK. The jinker would be handy too. Lot of boat for the money. Couple of years ago that would have sold for 25 grand! Plenty of info about if you search on quarter tonners. www.histoiredeshalfs.com/index%20anglais.htm

Yes that's the boat, it needs a little work mainly superficial. I'm convinced it's a great buy. There is a similar boat for sail in great condition for 25k. The sails are hanked on but for a bigginer I almost think it's better to learn to handle a basic set up first. Thanks for the response I'm going to look at the boat again ASAP.

Hi Corz, I notice the Cole 26 is again for sale. Why didn't you buy it ? Is there something about it I should know ? Cheers

Seeking Data on Cole Yacht

Hi, Everyone hope I am posting in the right spot here. I am trying to find information/feedback/opinions on Cole keel yachts. Specifically the Cole 26. I've tried to search Peter Cole the designer but cannot locate anything other then general information. It would appear that various versions of his designs were built by different shipyards so looking at another model tells me little about the one I am interested in, being a Cole 26. If anyone can pass on to me any sort of information I would be most gratefull. Mychael
I'm just re-posting this as so far I've had no responses. Does anyone have any opinions (good/bad) or otherwise about Cole yachts. The particular boat I am interested in is just called a Cole 26.. Bulit around 1985, glass with bolt on keel. Any information about Cole boats in general and this model in partciular would be much appreciated. Thanks, Mychael

Mychael, I have no personal knowledge of the Cole 26 but it could be a variation of the “contessa 25” also designed by Peter Cole which was looked on as a very good boat. I think east coast yachts built it.

Topic: Australian Peter Cole designed "Contessa 26"

I moved to Australia from Scotland 5 years ago, and am very familiar with the Roger's 26.  I bought a boat here described as a Contessa 26 that is clearly not (although a very nice boat).  In particular she doesn't have a long keel (more the 32 skeg configuration), totally different through cockpit rudder arrangement and conventional companionway.

I am just interested to learn the history of why my boat should have been described as a Contessa, and indeed has the characteristic moulding at the bow coachlines.  One thing that struck me at the time of purchase was the Farryman motor seemed consistant, and indeed the very genuine sellers belief in the boats heritage (she is called Rosina!)

I understand she was built in Sydney and used originally as an Australian Navy sail training vessel.

I understand that there is only one Contessa 26 but am fascinated how my boat should have beared the same description and indeed any history the forum members may be aware of

Cheers, Jonathan

Thank you very much for your reply - I was so slow checking for it I think the boat you linked to must be sold!  I am very pleased with my boat, and at least I don't have to worry about her having the same name as Jeremy Rogers 'Rosina' as she is a different design.

I am really interested in introducing a 32 to Australia, so may make my quest for a real Contessa down that route!

Many thanks again for your reply
