How to Prepare for Your Powerboat Level 2

The Powerboat Level 2 certification is essential for anyone wanting to operate powerboats safely. This internationally recognised certification gives you the skills needed for boat handling, navigation, and safety. Whether for leisure or a career on the water, this certification is a key step.

Passing the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course builds your confidence and proves your competence as a skipper. It shows you can handle powerboats in different conditions and keep everyone safe. This certification is also a prerequisite for more advanced maritime courses.

During the Powerboat Level 2 course, you will learn and practice various boat handling techniques. These include:

• Basic Manoeuvring : How to steer, turn, and control the speed of the boat.
• Docking and Undocking : Techniques for approaching and leaving docks safely and smoothly.
• Anchoring : How to anchor the boat correctly in different conditions.
• High-Speed Handling : Managing the boat at higher speeds, including making sharp turns and stopping quickly.
• Man-Overboard Drills : Procedures for safely recovering a person who has fallen overboard.
• Navigation in Confined Spaces : Handling the boat in tight areas, such as marinas and locks.

Techniques sections:

Basic manoeuvring.

Basic manoeuvring involves learning how to steer, turn, and control the speed of the boat effectively. You’ll start with understanding the boat’s controls, including the throttle, steering wheel, and trim tabs. Practical exercises include making gentle turns to understand how the boat responds at different speeds and using the throttle to control acceleration and deceleration smoothly. You’ll practice maintaining a steady course, making minor adjustments to counteract wind and current effects. This foundational skill set is crucial for ensuring safe and controlled navigation in various conditions.

Docking and Undocking

Docking and undocking techniques focus on approaching and leaving docks safely and smoothly. You will learn to judge distances and speeds accurately to avoid collisions. The course covers using fenders and lines to protect the boat and secure it properly. You’ll practice approaching the dock at a controlled speed, using short bursts of power and steering adjustments to position the boat precisely. Techniques such as using spring lines to pivot the boat and counteracting wind and current effects are often also covered. By the end of the training, you should be able to dock and undock confidently in different scenarios.

Anchoring involves learning how to secure the boat in various conditions effectively. You’ll study the types of anchors, such as fluke (lightweight, ideal for sand/mud), plough (versatile, good for various seabeds), and mushroom (best for long-term moorings in soft mud), and their appropriate uses. Practical sessions include selecting an anchoring spot, considering factors like depth, bottom composition, and wind direction. You’ll practice deploying the anchor properly, letting out the correct amount of rode (chain or rope), and setting the anchor by reversing the boat gently. Techniques for checking the anchor’s hold and retrieving it safely are also covered, ensuring you can anchor securely and retrieve the anchor without issues.

High-Speed Handling

High-speed handling teaches you to manage the boat at higher speeds, including making sharp turns and stopping quickly. You’ll start with understanding the boat’s behaviour at high speeds, including the impact of trim and balance. Practical exercises include accelerating smoothly to high speeds and making controlled, sharp turns without losing stability. You’ll also practice emergency stops, learning to reduce speed quickly and safely. This section helps you gain confidence in handling the boat during high-speed manoeuvres, essential for situations requiring quick responses.

Man-Overboard Drills

Man-overboard drills focus on safely recovering a person who has fallen overboard. You’ll learn to react quickly and efficiently by immediately stopping the boat and keeping the person in sight. Practical exercises include turning the boat back towards the person using the “Williamson turn” or other appropriate methods. You’ll practice approaching the person slowly, throwing them a flotation device, and bringing them aboard using rescue equipment like lifebuoys or heaving lines. These drills are repeated to ensure proficiency and confidence in real-life emergency situations.

Navigation in Confined Spaces

Navigation in confined spaces teaches you to handle the boat in tight areas such as marinas and locks. You’ll practice precise control of the boat’s speed and direction, using minimal space. Techniques include making tight turns, using the bow thruster (if equipped), and coordinating the throttle and steering to manoeuvre through narrow channels. You’ll also learn to anticipate and react to the movements of other vessels in these confined areas. This training ensures you can navigate safely and efficiently, even in crowded or restricted spaces.

Emergency Procedures

Emergency procedures cover responding to different types of emergencies on the water. You’ll learn to identify potential hazards and take preventative measures. Practical exercises include conducting fire drills, where you’ll practice using fire extinguishers and dealing with onboard fires. You’ll also practice responses to hull breaches, such as using bilge pumps and sealing leaks. Abandon ship procedures are covered, including the use of life rafts and survival techniques. By mastering these procedures, you ensure you and your passengers are prepared for various emergencies, enhancing overall safety on the water.

Theory sections:

Boat types and uses.

In the Powerboat Level 2 course, you’ll learn to identify different types of powerboats by examining their hull shapes and designs. For example, you’ll explore the differences between planing hulls, which ride on top of the water at higher speeds, and displacement hulls, which push through the water and provide a smoother ride. You’ll also study semi-displacement hulls that combine features of both. Practical applications of this knowledge include understanding why a fishing boat with a displacement hull is suitable for rough waters, whereas a speedboat with a planing hull is ideal for calm, inland waters. You’ll learn to assess a boat’s suitability for various activities, such as leisure cruising, fishing, or commercial use, based on its design and capabilities.

Navigation and Chart Work

Navigation and chart work involve several key skills. You’ll start by learning how to read nautical charts, which depict water depths, underwater hazards, and navigational aids. This includes interpreting chart symbols and colour codes. You’ll practice plotting a course by marking waypoints on the chart and measuring distances using dividers and a parallel ruler. You’ll also learn to use a compass to maintain your heading and make corrections for magnetic variation and deviation. Practical exercises will have you plotting courses on paper charts and then translating these plans into real-world navigation.

Safety Equipment

The theory around safety equipment starts with familiarisation with various types of life jackets, their buoyancy ratings, and proper fitting techniques. You’ll learn how to inspect and maintain fire extinguishers, ensuring they are in working condition and accessible. The course covers the different types of flares, when and how to deploy them, and the importance of regular checks on expiry dates. First aid kit contents are discussed in detail, along with their specific uses. You will also be trained on the operation of a marine VHF radio, including making a distress call (Mayday) and using correct radio procedures. The course includes practical sessions on performing safety drills, such as man-overboard recovery and fire response.

Regulations and Rules of the Road

Understanding and applying the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) is crucial. You’ll study the rules governing the right of way in different situations, such as crossing, overtaking, and head-on encounters. Practical scenarios are used to illustrate these rules, helping you learn to make quick decisions to avoid collisions. You’ll also learn to identify navigational marks and buoys by their shapes, colours, and light patterns, and understand their significance in guiding safe navigation. The course includes practical exercises in identifying these marks in simulated environments and using them to navigate safely. Additionally, you’ll cover sound and light signals used for communication between vessels.

Weather and Tides

The weather and tides section teaches you how to interpret weather forecasts and understand meteorological terms. You’ll learn to read synoptic charts to predict weather conditions, including recognising high and low-pressure systems and fronts. Practical skills include assessing the impact of wind on your boat’s performance and making go/no-go decisions based on weather predictions. For tides, you’ll learn to use tide tables to calculate high and low tide times and predict tidal heights and currents. Practical exercises will involve planning trips considering tidal streams and their impact on navigation and anchoring. You’ll practice adjusting your navigation plans to account for tidal changes and ensuring safe passages in tidal waters.

Tips for Preparation

Practice the skills.

• Get on the Water : Spend as much time as possible practicing boat handling. If you don’t own a boat, consider renting one or joining a boating club.
• Use Online Resources : Watch instructional videos, take practice quizzes, and read boating safety guides.
• Simulate Exam Conditions : Practice manoeuvres and drills as if you were being tested. This will help you get comfortable performing under pressure.
• Seek Extra Training : If you’re struggling with certain skills, consider taking additional lessons or seeking advice from more experienced boaters.
• Familiarise Yourself with the exam and understand the structure of both the written and practical exams so there are no surprises.

Powerboat Level 2

This two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations.

Assumed Knowledge: None required, however it is recommended that candidates complete the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship online course prior to the Powerboat Level 2.  Candidates will be given the opportunity to add the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship to the Powerboat Level 2 booking, and will recieve 15% off the standard course price. Course Duration: 2 day (0930-1700). Minimum age: 16. For under 16 years old, see Junior Powerboating courses. Course Content: Launching and recovery, Boat preparation, crew preparation, boat handling, securing to a mooring buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, being towed, man overboard procedures. Ability after the course: To be a self sufficient powerboat in appropriate conditions, to be aware of own limitations, and those of the vessel.procedures.

1:1 tuition available: For anyone who would like to reduce contact with other candidates or who would like to spend the course with an instructor specifically targeting their training requirements.  There is an additional fee for this and prices are not on the website, so please contact us for further details.

Safer Waters is a Charity offering a unique service in Northern Ireland, established in 2020 to provide a Safety Boat service for water-based community events. We are also an RYA Training center offering Powerboat PB2 courses

As a charity we try to keep the cost of our courses down but it doesnt mean we reduce the quality. Our instructors strive to ensure participants learn new skills and importantly enjoy themselves. Powerboat level 2 handling (PB2)

Course Duration – 2 day

Without a doubt the most popular RYA Powerboat Course in the world, the RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a two-day practical and theory course that acts as the starting point for providing all the skills and background knowledge that you need to go afloat safely, including man overboard recovery and collision regulations.

It is also the most popular powerboat charter qualification and is also known as the ‘Powerboat Handling Level 2’. Those gaining their Powerboat Level 2 can then apply to the RYA for their ICC (International Certificate of Competence).

Course Duration – 1 day

Our one-day First Aid course covers all the usual first aid subjects, but from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries, or on cross-channel passages. This course is MCA approved and satisfies the requirements for Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster and Advanced Powerboat certificates of competence and some commercial work afloat.

Marine Radio SRC Course and Exam

This RYA Marine radio SRC (Short range certificate) course and exam for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A vhf radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio either fixed or hand held. Bottom line is that you need an RYA VHF Radio License otherwise known a Short Range Certificate.

ICC  Assessment

Course Duration – 1 Day

The ICC (or to give it its full title International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft) is a certificate which is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in foreign countries. It was historically known as the International Certificate of Competence. 

(Where evidence of competence is necessary, is intended for British recreational boaters operating UK registered Pleasure Vessels and is based both on what we understand the law to say and boaters’ experiences in the country. The RYA generally recommends carrying the ICC as evidence of competence in other European countries).

Safety Boat

Course Duration – 2 Days

This two-day course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities. It includes rescue techniques and elements of race management and mark laying. It is strongly recommended that a member of the rescue crew should hold a first aid certificate (or should have experience of first aid).

Applicants should have a basic understanding of sailing boats and windsurfers (though not essential). RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate must be held prior to this course

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course (RYA PB2) offers a general introduction to power boating and teaches core boat handling and safety skills. The course is popular both with beginners and those who are self taught and now require formal certification.

The course is generally considered, the licence for powerboats. The qualification is widely recognised throughout the world. The Powerboat Level 2 (formerly known as the National Powerboat Certificate) covers everything in the RYA Powerboat Level 1 and a lot more.

HOW LONG DOES THE RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 COURSE TAKE?

The RYA PB2 course takes two days

WHAT ARE THE PRE REQUISITES FOR RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 ?

• No previous experience required
• Minimum age of 12 years**

**Under 16s are advised, “Not be in charge of a powerboat unless under the supervision of a responsible adult”. We run separate Junior Powerboat Courses.

WHAT IS COVERED ON THE RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 COURSE?

This course is largely practical onboard the powerboat. There are some short theory sections to complete.

The course provides everything you need to get started with an emphasis on you becoming confident and competent at boat handling and being aware of the associated safety consideration and equipment. The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is broadly equivalent to a series of driving lessons, but a lot more fun.

The RYA Powerboat Level Two will prepare you for driving a powerboat unsupervised with confidence. While primarily a boat handling (parking) course you may consider following it up with the RYA Powerboat Intermediate Course which covers high speed navigation and passage making in far more detail.

RYA PB2 Training at Chieftain Training is comprehensive. We aim to make life as easy as possible for our students and provide the following within the course:

Fast Track 1:1 day for experienced drivers

If you already have experience as a powerboater, need to gain your Level 2 certifIcate and don’t wish to undertake the introductory elements of the Level 2 course, you can instead attend a shorter 1:1 course which consists of the relevant coaching and a direct assessment. “Teen” Powerboat Level 2 (RYA PB2) courses

Lets face it, our kids probably have more fun without us around. 12-15 years old can join our Youth Powerboat Level 2 Course . They receive the same course, however they will be learning with other 12-15 year olds.

“Family” Powerboat Level 2 courses

If you have just bought a new boat why not train together as a family. We train upto 3 of you together or can spread a larger family across 2 boats. Full information is at Family Level 2 Courses .

Own Boat Tuition

We can run this course on board your own boat.  We can train 1-3 of you at a time and bespoke the course around your boat and your likely usage.

WHAT RATIO IS RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 TAUGHT TO?

This course will run with no more than 3 students per boat and Instructor, sometimes less.

HOW LONG IS THE RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE VALID FOR?

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate does not expire. Drivers who qualified some time ago and for whatever reason did not make use of their training are advised to refresh by re-attending the course. If you choose to commercially endorse the PB2, then your Commercial Endorsement will expire after 5 years.

BOOKING THE COURSE:

The Powerboat Level Two course is run every weekend and frequently during the week. If you can’t find a suitable date from the list, please contact us and we will do our best to arrange a convenient date.

We can also run the course 1:1 at a time that best suits you and even on your own boat, if you would prefer. Please contact us for details of own boat tuition.

RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 DIRECT ASSESSMENT

If you have existing experience of power-boating and require a Level 2 Certificate then there is the option to attend a bespoke direct assessment. This option will save you time versus attending a two day course but is reserved for those with existing experience.

Half day RYA Powerboat Level 2 Direct Assessment

The Instructor will expect you to perform the following manoeuvres

• Holding Off
• Departing from and returning to an alongside berth in various states of wind and/or tide
• Turn using warps
• Picking Up a Mooring
• Turning in a confined space
• Planing speed handling

You will also need to answer oral questions on the following subjects

• Safety equipment
• Sources of weather info
• Basic chartwork / passage planing

One Day RYA Powerboat Level 2 (PB2) Direct Assessment

If some of the above skills are a little out of practice then we can offer you a bespoke one-day 1:1 option (for experienced power-boaters only). We conduct your 1:1 direct assessment in the afternoon, but before that, our Instructor spends the morning with you coaching those skills/knowledge which are a little rusty.

What is RYA Powerboat Level 2?

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a beginner course providing essential skills and knowledge for handling powerboats.

This course covers boat handling, basic seamanship, and safety. The course is recognised wordwide and can be commercially endorsed, if you need to be qualified to do a certain job. There are conditions on this endorsement however.

Does RYA Powerboat Level 2 expire?

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate does not expire. However, refreshing skills periodically is recommended for safety and proficiency.

Advancing your skills by both theory and practical knowledge is highly recommended. The RYA Powerboat Intermediate course and RYA Day Skipper Theory course are the next progression steps.

We would also recommend that you undertake your RYA VHF/SRC and RYA First Aid at Sea courses.

How long does RYA Powerboat Level 2 course last?

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course typically lasts for two days and includes both practical and theoretical training.

The days normally start at 0900 in the morning and finish about 1700 in the evening. Once you have passed the course the qualification will last your lifetime.

RYA Powerboat Level 2 cost?

The cost for the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course varies through the year.

In winter typically prices are £249/per person and £299/per person in spring/summer.

RYA Powerboat Level 2 replacement certificate questions

We recommend upon passing your course that you photograph your certificate or make a spare laminated copy, in case you lose it. However……………

If you’ve lost your RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate/card, the first point is to get in Touch with the RYA

To locate your records in order to issue a new certificate, you’ll need to send an email to [email protected] with the following details:

Name Date of birth Previous known addresses Name of school who issued the certificate Name of course

If the RYA can locate your details, you will be sent a replacement form to complete, and your replacement certificate will be issued and sent to you.

What if the RYA Can’t Find My Details?

In some cases, the RYA will be unable to match your records with a certificate, which can delay the replacement process. If you receive a response from the RYA detailing that your records were not found, simply get in touch with our team by emailing [email protected] or calling 02381 242 159 (or contact the school which issued your certificate) and ask for a confirmation letter to verify that you have completed this course. You can then send this confirmation letter back to the RYA, and a replacement certificate form will be sent to you to complete.

How Much Does a Replacement RYA Certificate Cost?

All replacement certificates with a photo are charged at £25, with shore-based certificate replacements costing £20 to replace (Prices may change – These prices are correct at the time of writing)

How Long will a Replacement Certificate Take to Arrive?

Once you have completed and sent off your replacement certificate form, you should allow 21 working days for your new certificate to arrive. However, if you need a replacement more urgently, a Fast Track service may be available for an additional cost. If you are looking for a Fast Track replacement, we recommend that you state this in your initial email to the RYA.

RYA Powerboat Intermediate course content

The RYA Powerboat Intermediate course builds on the skills learned in RYA Powerboat Level 2 , focusing on navigation and pilotage, this looks at going further afield and traveling longer distance along the coast line.

It’s ideal for those who wish to undertake longer coastal journeys by day.

RYA Powerboat Advanced Restrictions

The Advanced course is intended for experienced boaters and includes night operation.

It requires prior completion of lower-level courses or equivalent experience. This is often with in 20nm of port of departure.

RYA Advanced Powerboat: What Can I Drive?

The RYA Advanced Powerboat course prepares you to handle powerboats safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night.

It covers higher-level navigation skills and advanced boat handling. The advanced course allows you to drive powerboats of less than 68 tones and less than 23 meters in length.

RYA Advanced Powerboat Commercial Endorsement

Holders of the RYA Advanced Powerboat certificate can apply for a commercial endorsement to work professionally, subject to additional requirements such as medical fitness certificate (ML5 / ENG1), sea survival course, RYA SRC/VHF radio operators licence , and an RYA PPR online course . Details can be found on each of the courses by clicking on them.

The course requires previous experience and knowledge, such as basic navigation and boating skills.

It’s recommended for those with significant powerboating experience. The restrictions on the use of the licence can be dictated by your insurance company and the capability of the vessel. For commercial work it is then down to coding of the vessel and the endorsements you have.

How to Become an RYA Powerboat Instructor?

To become an RYA Powerboat Instructor, you need to have a valid RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate , RYA First Aid certification , and sufficient powerboating experience. You must also complete the Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment and Instructor Training Course. This course is 4 days in length. Its an amazing course to get you into the industry.

RYA Powerboat ICC

The International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is often required for boating abroad. The RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate is fully accepted as a qualification to obtain the ICC for powerboats up to 10 meters.

Once you’ve gained your RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate you can apply to the RYA for an ICC. Please note that there is a cost for this, payable direct to the RYA. Or, RYA members get can apply for one for free – So it’s definitely worth becoming a member.

RYA Powerboat Rules

Understanding and adhering to powerboating rules is crucial for safety and efficient navigation.

The RYA Powerboat courses thoroughly cover these rules and regulations of the water, and a lot more. These rules are also taught during our other RYA theory courses which go well together with our powerboating courses to develop personal knowledge and skills further, helping you become a safe, responsible and competent sailor/boater.

RYA Powerboat Renewal

While the RYA Powerboat certification itself does not require renewal, keeping your skills up-to-date and considering periodic refreshers or advanced courses is advisable for ongoing competency.

RYA Powerboat Licence Renewal

If you hold a commercial endorsement on your Powerboat certificate, you’ll need to renew this every five years, which includes updating your RYA First Aid and RYA Sea Survival qualifications.

RYA Powerboat Instructor Revalidation

RYA Powerboat Instructors need to revalidate their qualification every five years by maintain their teaching and then showing they have been teaching over those past five years in powerboats.

The Power Boat Level II is an essential course for deck crew working in the superyacht industry. It is also advisable for steward/stewardesses, and engineers to hold a powerboat license. This two-day entry-level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat in a safe and effective manner. The powerboat level II is a requirement for crew wishing to drive a superyacht tender up to 10m.

Course Breakdown

The majority of the course is practical with a short theory classroom session. The theory learning will continue during the practical training and assessment. The powerboat level II usually takes two days to complete, weather permitting. The topics covered are as follows:

Powerboat Level 2 Certificate Outcome:

RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling

RYA powerboat courses are primarily for those using small powered craft such as RIBs, dories and sportsboats that don't generally undertake long or offshore passages.

The types of commercial craft requiring this level certification are typically: charter fishing boats, small passenger launches, thrill ride operators, harbour patrol launches, construction site safety boats etc.

If you will be using larger boats with accommodation and the capacity to cruise or work further offshore you are likely to need a certificate within the motor cruising programme such as Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore.

If you need a Level 2 Powerboat Handling certificate in order to work on a commercial craft subject to the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed . You can then work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, operating in category 6 waters - that is up to 3 miles from a nominated departure point in fine weather and daylight hours.
