yacht flybridge enclosures

Concord Custom Canvas offers flybridge enclosures for power cruiser owners.  These  structures are built under a canvas bimini or under a hard top.

The boat in these images was a 55 foot Californian that has a hard top.  The windows are made from Strataglass and stamoid.  The middle windshield window is a rigid polycarbonate window.

Zipper Detachment

Each side panel and the bimini detach from each other by way of zippers.  The foot of all panels are held in place with zippers.

Roll-up windows and panels

Enclosure windows are fabricated to include smile zippers that can roll-up to open the boat up.  Alternatively, smile zippers can be left off and the entire window can be unzipped along the foot and sides and rolled up.  This approach cuts down on the number of zippers and improves visibility from the bridge.

Flip up rigid window

The owner of the featured boat wanted a rigid polycarbonate window in the middle of the windshield of their boat.  It unzips along the foot and sides so that it can be flipped up.  Hardware is mounted along the underside of the top to hold the window up.  For more information on rigid windows, click here .

Flip Up Rigid Window

The owner of the featured boat also wanted a windshield wiper on the rigid window, so Concord Custom Canvas installed a hand operated windshield wiper in the window.

Keeping out water

Keeping out the water is an important objective for any boat cover.  Flybridge enclosures are no exception. Therefore, Concord Custom Canvas designs and constructs its enclosures with a mind toward keeping out the water.

Aft Enclosure

A common feature of some power cruisers is an enclosed aft cockpit.  Many owners have the canvas on the aft enclosure replaced at the same time the other canvas is changed.

As I am working through purchasing a 2018-2021 38E, i have noticed a wide variation in flybridge tops and enclosures. Since I will be using the boat in the PNW and possibly up to Alaska one of these years was wondering what people have installed for enclosures. I am leaning to having a full enclosure with panels that can be removed depending on the weather and possibly to reduce wind effects when docking. Appreciate input and maybe an idea of costs to add to the standard Bimini top. Thanks all.

Enclosure are a custom thing. Like a car, the more features the more they cost. I have always had my enclosure made out of Sunbrella. Sunbrella is not the only option but it is certainly one of the better materials. When it comes to thread, Tenara is considered the best but it is expensive. I have had good luck with polyester thread but it tends to be the week link in my enclosure’s longevity but not by enough that it mattered. I use only coated polycarbonate for windows that I look through to drive. Makrolon is my specific favorite. Makrolon is not cheap but it’s like looking through glass and it has long life. You will hear things like stratoglass and isenglass. Don’t buy into these names. There are only 3 basic products. Vinyl, acrylic and polycarbonate. Non UV coated polycarbonate often referred to as lexan will tun yellow in three years. However, a UV coated polycarbonate will last a long time (I.e. Makrolon). Vinyl is cheap, not crystal clear, ages better when UV coated, is the most flexible. I use it for side curtains and doors that get rolled up. I use the UV coated vinyl under the name Strataglass. Then there is acrylic. Clearest of all, least flexible fairly inexpensive. In my book not for enclosure use. However, there are some new developments in this area. Acrylic might become the new go to material. I want to see some more proof before I buy into acrylic. Again, don’t buy into the hype of fancy names. Make sure you know exactly what the product is. Brand names like Tuffglass mean nothing is it vinyl, acrylic or polycarbonate. Is it UV coated or not?

I used to use Sunbrella for all the canvas work but it is a woven product so it can trap dirt and be more difficult to keep clean. On our current boat I used Stamoid. I use the back coated version since it is a bit heavier. It is truly waterproof not water resistant like Sunbrella. It is easier to keep cleam since it is smooth. As to thread I only use Tenara thread. It will last the life of the fabric as compared to a poly thread that may need restitching in as little as 3 or 4 years. As to cost, it depends on what you want done. The sky is the limit.

The enclosure you see on my boat was about $15K ten years ago done by the PO. It was made by Breezy in Seattle, very good quality, probably the best I've seen. My guess now is just a bit south of $20K for the whole thing. Font three panels are Rainier bonded which are 0.080" on the sides and 0.125" in the middle. 1.25" diameter stainless support tubing. I'm in the process of replacing the glass panels now and the three side panels on both sides have been rebuilt, luckily I have a friend in the canvas business down here in SD, but it's still a pretty pricey ventrure.

How Much Does a Boat Enclosure Cost? Factors Influencing Price

yacht flybridge enclosures

Understanding Boat Enclosures

Boat enclosures are essential for any vessel owner wanting protection from the elements. They come in various configurations tailored to different boat sizes and styles. A boat enclosure can keep the rain, wind, and sun at bay, creating a comfortable environment on board.

Typical Costs

  • Small Boats (up to 20 feet): Costs range from $1,000 to $3,000.
  • Medium Boats (20 to 30 feet): Owners might spend between $3,000 and $5,000.
  • Large Boats (over 30 feet): The price can escalate beyond $10,000.

Material Options include marine-grade canvas and clear vinyl, with durability and visibility being key selection criteria. The most common materials are:

  • Marine Mesh
  • STRATAGLASS™ 30ml Clear Vinyl
  • Crystal Clear 20/20 Polished Sheet
  • STRATAGLASS™ 40ml Clear Vinyl

Experienced mariners will suggest a balance between durability and aesthetics, with an understanding that larger panels, although challenging to handle, offer unobstructed views .

Design Considerations:

  • Ergonomics: The enclosure should facilitate easy movement around the vessel.
  • Handling: Ensure panels can be managed by a single person.

After 20 years of boating experience, one thing is clear: the choice of a boat enclosure is not merely about aesthetics. It also involves considering functionality and longevity, as the best enclosures complement the vessel’s lines and withstand the marine environment.

Functionality is also a significant component. An expertly designed enclosure allows easy access to the boat’s features while offering protection. The final enclosure cost will depend on the complexity of the design and the materials chosen.

Types of Boat Enclosures

yacht flybridge enclosures

Boat enclosures come in various forms and functions to suit different boating needs. They offer protection from the elements and add to the comfort and style of the vessel.

Bimini Tops

Bimini tops are a popular choice for boat owners looking for a simple and effective way to shade the cockpit or deck area. Typically built with a metal frame and canvas material, they are designed to be collapsible for easy storage.

Full Canvas Enclosures

Full canvas enclosures encase the entire cockpit area, providing comprehensive protection from sun, wind, and rain. Such enclosures usually include windows that can be rolled up or zipped open for ventilation.

Hardtop Enclosures

Hardtop enclosures are sturdy structures that replace canvas with solid materials, such as fiberglass or plastic, offering a more permanent solution. They can be integrated with bimini tops or full canvas enclosures for added versatility.

Custom Enclosures

Custom enclosures cater to boat owners with specific requirements. They can combine the features of biminis, full canvas, and hardtops, tailored to fit the exact dimensions and style of the boat, ensuring maximum protection and functionality.

Factors Affecting Cost

yacht flybridge enclosures

When considering the cost of a boat enclosure, it is important to evaluate various elements. These include the materials used, the size and type of the vessel, the complexity of the design, and the labor costs involved in installation.

The choice of materials significantly influences the cost of a boat enclosure. High-quality materials such as Sunbrella fabric and marine-grade vinyl tend to be more costly but provide better durability and protection against the elements. Lower-quality materials might offer initial savings, but can lead to increased maintenance and replacement costs in the long run.

Size and Type of Boat

The size and type of boat play a crucial role in determining the cost of an enclosure. Larger vessels require more material and often a more intricate installation process. The type of boat also affects the enclosure design — whether it’s a fishing boat, sailboat, or a luxury yacht. Each type has specific requirements that can affect the overall pricing.

Design Complexity

Design complexity also adds to the cost. Custom enclosures with numerous windows, zippers, or additional features such as UV protection or ventilation systems will increase the price. The more complex the requirements, the higher the cost for both materials and labor.

Labor Costs

Lastly, labor costs can’t be ignored. The expertise of the professionals installing the boat enclosure can affect the cost. Installers with 20 years of boating experience often charge a premium for their services due to their expertise and ability to craft bespoke solutions that offer longevity and performance.

Average Price Range

yacht flybridge enclosures

The cost of a boat enclosure can vary significantly based on the size of the boat and the materials used. Generally, those with 20 years of boating experience may observe that small boats , up to 20 feet in length, typically fall into the range of $1,000 to $3,000 for a full enclosure . This cost can include materials such as canvas and vinyl, which are standard for such sizes.

For medium boats , between 20 and 30 feet, one can expect to pay between $3,000 and $5,000 for a quality enclosure. The increase in price is usually due to the larger area to cover and the additional structural supports that may be needed.

Large boats , over 30 feet, can command prices upwards of $10,000 . Premium materials like strataglass and higher-grade canvas, coupled with the complexity of the design, can further drive up costs. The intricacy of the enclosure’s features, such as roll-down windows with screens, can also contribute to the final price.

Below is a breakdown of the estimated costs by boat size:

  • Small Boats (<20 feet) : $1,000 – $3,000
  • Medium Boats (20-30 feet) : $3,000 – $5,000
  • Large Boats (>30 feet) : Starting at $10,000

It is crucial for boat owners to remember that these are average estimates and actual costs can vary based on the thickness and quality of the enclosure materials, as well as local market rates. For those seeking to understand specific pricing, it is recommended to consult with professional enclosure suppliers or to obtain a cost estimate from reputable service providers.

Price Breakdown by Enclosure Type

yacht flybridge enclosures

Drawing on 20 years of boating experience, the cost of boat enclosures can vary widely depending on the type of enclosure a boat owner selects. Different materials and designs lead to different price points .

Small Boat Enclosures:

  • Basic Canvas and Vinyl : Suitable for boats up to 20 feet, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 .
  • Custom Enclosures : Can include features like U-Zipper Windows and may push towards the higher end of the price range.

Medium Boat Enclosures:

  • Standard Enclosures : For boats between 20 and 30 feet, prices typically fall between $3,000 and $5,000 .
  • Enhanced Features : Additions such as STRATAGLASS 40ml clear vinyl increase durability and visibility, influencing the total cost .

Large Boat Enclosures:

  • Flybridge Enclosures : They are more complex and can cost between $5,000 and $15,000 .
  • High-Quality Materials : Options like polycarbonate are semi-rigid, nearly unbreakable, and offer superior protection, commanding a higher price tag.

Specialty Enclosures:

  • Custom Configurations : Aligning with the aesthetic of a boat and facilitating easy movement can add to the cost.
  • Premium Options : Materials with UV ray resistant technology or special coatings are pricier but provide long-term benefits.

It is essential for boat owners to consider the trade-offs between cost, functionality, and longevity when selecting an enclosure. High-quality materials and custom features will lead to higher costs but potentially extend the enclosure’s usable life and enhance boating comfort .

Additional Costs to Consider

yacht flybridge enclosures

When contemplating the expenses of a boat enclosure, boat owners must account for more than just the initial purchase price. The lifecycle of a boat enclosure brings additional expenses such as installation, ongoing maintenance, and eventual repair or replacement—each contributing to the total cost of ownership.

Installation

Installation costs can vary depending on the type and complexity of the boat enclosure system. Typically, installations conducted by professionals can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Variables like the size of the boat and local labor rates greatly influence the final installation fee.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential to prolong the life of a boat enclosure and ensure its effectiveness. Maintenance includes periodic cleaning, waterproofing, and UV-treatment applications. These procedures incur costs for cleaning agents, protective solutions, and possibly labor if the owner opts for professional service.

Repair and Replacement

Over time, boat enclosures can sustain damage from the elements or wear and tear, leading to repair and replacement costs. High-quality materials may command higher prices but typically offer greater longevity. For instance, replacing a damaged panel or zipper could cost anywhere from tens to hundreds of dollars, depending on the size and material of the boat enclosure.

Cost Comparison by Boat Size

When considering the cost of a boat enclosure, one must analyze the size and type of one’s vessel. With 20 years of boating experience, it is observed that prices can vary significantly based on these factors.

Small Boats:

  • Boats up to 20 feet – Enclosures made from high-quality materials typically range from $1,000 to $3,000. The lower end of this spectrum includes simpler designs, while the higher end factors in premium materials and complexity.

Medium Boats:

  • Boats between 20 and 30 feet – The cost can escalate to between $3,000 and $5,000. Increased size entails more material and labor, influencing the overall price.

Larger Vessels:

  • Over 30 feet – Owners should expect to pay upwards of $5,000. Large cruisers and yachts with intricate designs and superior materials can have significantly higher costs, which reflect their complexity and the enhanced durability required.

These prices are influenced by the choice of a professional canvas maker for design and installation, contributing to the range within each category.

It is also worthy to note that fabric quality, the inclusion of features like UV protection, and the need for custom fittings play substantial roles in pricing. Therefore, while size dictates a baseline cost, the overall price can vary based on additional specifications and enhancements.

Tips for Budgeting

yacht flybridge enclosures

With over two decades of experience in boating, one understands the significance of careful financial planning when considering the addition of a boat enclosure. Boat enclosures can be a substantial investment, so it’s crucial to approach this purchase methodically.

Initial Costs: Boat enclosures vary in price based on size and materials. For small boats under 20 feet, buyers may anticipate costs to range from $1,000 to $3,000 . Medium boats between 20 and 30 feet can expect the range to be $3,000 to $5,000 , while large boats over 30 feet could experience prices exceeding $10,000 .

  • Materials: Selecting the right material can impact longevity and maintenance costs.
  • Complexity: Intricate designs may increase the cost.

Upkeep: Maintenance costs can add up over time. It’s advised to factor in clear vinyl care products and potential replacement parts like zippers when budgeting.

Installation: Professional installation can ensure quality but will add to the total cost. Labor typically accounts for approximately half of the overall expense .

DIY Considerations: Those with the necessary skills might consider a do-it-yourself approach. However, the trade-off in terms of time and potential for errors must be weighed.

Long-term Value: Quality enclosures can extend the life of a boat and reduce future costs, thereby offering better long-term value.

It’s prudent to request multiple quotes and consider the enclosure’s impact on overall boat value and enjoyment. A well-planned budget accommodates both the immediate and ongoing financial implications of a boat enclosure.

Where to Purchase Boat Enclosures

Boat owners seeking quality enclosures can explore a variety of retailers that specialize in marine canvas products. For those with decades of boating experience, finding a reliable source that delivers both expertise and craftsmanship is essential.

Online Retailers:

  • Mariner Canvas offers a Cost Estimator for custom-made canvas products, ranging from basic to premium options.
  • Boatswain’s Locker stands out with Marine Grade Boat Enclosures and provides customer service to assist in selecting the right enclosure.

Local Marine Canvas Shops:

  • Many coastal and marina areas have local shops with professionals who handcraft enclosures suited for various boat models.

Boating Forums and Communities:

  • Places like Sam’s Marine can be excellent resources for finding peer recommendations and reviews on different enclosure providers.

Marine Tradeshows and Boat Shows:

  • Attending these events provides opportunities to see products first-hand and speak directly with vendors about custom solutions.

In choosing a provider, it is important to consider factors such as the provider’s knowledge of weather conditions, materials best suited for specific needs, and the ability to tailor the product for a perfect fit. With ample experience, one understands the importance of balancing cost with the expected lifespan and performance of the enclosure. Quality should not be compromised, as a robust enclosure protects against the elements and enhances the boating experience.

Custom Fishing Hardtop

fishing hardtops

If you have been looking for a solid, watertight enclosure that looks great and is priced right, you've found it. Owners of smaller walk-around style boats have found Atlantic's popular Custom Fishing HardTop to be the ideal solution. A full 4 Rod Rocket Launcher is standard, along with mounts for Halogen Spreader Cockpit Floodlights, a variety of antennas and Radar.

Each Tower is also as stylish as it is durable. To ensure design continuity, each Custom Fishing HardTop is custom fabricated to match the existing lines of your boat's windshield.

Atlantic's Hardtops are shipped complete with all the components and guidelines needed for easy "bolt-on" installation. No welding is required' eliminating the possibility of damaging your boat's finish. The best part is, there is no need to leave your boat at some strange facility for days or even weeks, while your pipe work is being completed.

Standard Features One piece all-welded top frame of Atlantic's proprietary ATL6 aluminum extrusion and supporting legs of schedule 40 aluminum measuring nearly 2" O.D. finished in 320 spiral texture and bright dip anodized. High quality hand laid fiberglass top . 360 degree overhanging edge for weather protection, with provision for canvas track installation . Two side mount antenna plates and two halogen light mounts aft . Overhead hand rail running port to starboard just aft of helm seat -Rectangular carlins (roof beams) for added strength and to allow installation of reel hangers, rod racks and other equipment . Custom aluminum fittings for attachment of supporting legs to boat . Stainless steel hardware . Aluminum backup plates.

Atlantic's Custom Fishing Hardtop is specifically designed for retrofitting to walk around and express style boats. With it's unique cantilevered design, the Custom Fishing Hardtop requires no forward supports in it's normal configuration. Nothing to obstruct your field of view from the helm, nothing to interfere with front or side opening windshields, only clean lines and nothing to interfere with an enclosure. Strong enough to support hundreds of pounds of gear, and shrug off the beating a boat takes running offshore, yet very light weight overall. In fact a Custom Fishing Hardtop weighs less than 100 pounds for most applications.

Each Custom Fishing Hardtop is made from high strength corrosion resistant aluminum alloys. The aluminum is spiral finished with a fine 320 abrasive, before it is given a chemical cleaning process called "bright dip" which gives it the appearance of brushed chrome, or brushed stainless. After bright dip, it is clear anodized, which is the build up of a hard clear oxide finish for maximin salt water protection. The perimeter hardtop frame is shaped using our proprietary ATL-6 aluminum extrusion. This extrusion provides a self-trimming recess for the hand laid fiberglass top surface, allowing it to be securely fitted to the all welded structural frame with no exposed fasteners.

Using our proprietary database, each Atlantic Towers Custom Fishing Hardtop is custom designed and fabricated to order for your individual boat. The leading edge of the Custom Fishing Hardtop is shaped to conform to the shape of the windshield on your boat, for a factory installed look, and easy fit of a wrinkle free enclosure. The arch style legs are stylish, strong, and make for easy installation. Custom Hardtop

hardtop gallery

Atlantic Towers ATL 6 self trimming aluminum extrusion combined with quality hand laid fiberglass allow the construction of Custom Hardtops that combine, strength, durability and attractive “factory like” design in a structure that is light in weight and available at reasonable cost (Custom Hardtop prices start in the high $3000s)

Each Atlantic Towers Custom Hardtop frame is made from high strength corrosion resistant aluminum alloys. The aluminum is brushed or spiral finished with a fine 320 abrasive, before it is given a chemical cleaning process called "bright dip" which gives the aluminum the appearance of brushed chrome, or brushed stainless. After bright dip, it is clear anodized, which is the build up of a hard clear oxide finish to maximize salt water protection. The perimeter hardtop frame is shaped using our proprietary ATL-6 aluminum extrusion ( ) . This extrusion provides a self-trimming recess for the hand laid fiberglass top surface, allowing it to be securely fitted to the all welded structural frame with no exposed fasteners. Using our proprietary database, and if necessary combined with measurements, drawings and photographs of your boat or a sister ship, each Atlantic Towers Custom Hardtop is designed and fabricated strictly to order for your individual boat. The leading edge of the Custom Hardtop is shaped to conform to the shape of the windshield on your boat, for a factory installed look, and easy fit of a wrinkle free enclosure. ATL 4 proprietary extrusions provide for concealed wiring and hidden accessory mounting bolts ( )

Supporting leg structure in great part defines the style and esthetics of your hardtop, in addition to providing the structural support for a solid hardtop installation. Atlantic Towers, ATL 6 construction keeps hardtop weight to a minimum. As a result, supporting structure can be more esthetically pleasing. Heavy bridge type structures necessary to hold a 600 to 1000 pound cored fi berglass hardtop can be eliminated. In most cases, no special reinforcement to the boats fiberglass mounting surfaces will be required. Yet our installations are strong, and have routinely stood up to hurricane force winds well in excess of 100 mph.

Light weight means supporting legs can be shaped to an esthetically pleasing configuration. Most supporting structures fall into one of two categories, Arch Style, or Traditional Style. Although anything is possible and we can design configurations to attach to existing radar arches, funnels and other structures.

Arch style legs are stylish, strong, and make for easy installation. They add a contemporary look to older boats and typically do not interfere with bridge access, existing hand and guard rails, accessories etc. On flybridge boats, Arch Style legs eliminate the possible need to remove or cut headliners to install backing plates. They also provide the maximum flexibility in positioning of the hardtop when installed. The pipe used to fabricate the supporting legs is typically 1 1/2" schedule 40 marine grade aluminum pipe, which measures 1.90" on the outside with a very heavy wall thickness. Hardtops designed with Arch Style legs typically have 4 primary legs and mounting points, and may have two secondary sway braces, for a total of 6 attachment points.

Traditional Style Legs typically combine a three element rear supporting leg, with a pair of forward primary supporting legs and two, four or more secondary braces. Atlantic Towers Custom Hardtops with Traditional Style legs, have a least 6 attachment points and frequently 8 or more. In the 1980s many new flybridge fishing boats were fitted with aftermarket fabric topped “Half Towers” which was simply a permanent top, without the upper steering station. These structures all had Traditional Style supporting legs. As a result this style supporting leg is still popular today with the owners of earlier sport fishermen, convertibles and other traditionally styled boats.

Many other configurations are possible as well, providing for attaching Atlantic Towers Custom Hardtops to existing arches, supporting cockpit sunshades, aft deck hardtops on motor yachts and aft cabin boats. (see tuna towers and other specialty structures)

They can be tailored to accommodate various shapes and sizes, including curved or irregularly shaped areas. This ensures a snug and precise fit for your boat, enhancing aesthetics and functionality.

  • Affordability: Soft glass enclosures are generally more cost-effective than other enclosure options, such as rigid glass or acrylic. This makes them a popular choice for boaters looking for an economical yet functional solution for weather protection.

Boat enclosure faq.

For initial and occasional cleaning, use EZ2CY® Enclosure Cleaner/Polish to remove static and make future washing easier. We recommend using Kleenex® Viva White paper towels for this procedure. For normal washing, rinse the enclosure with fresh water after each use to remove salt and periodically when exposed to salt air. More extensive cleaning can be done using common boat soaps with a soft mitt and a fresh water rinse. You can also use a squeegee or water blade if desired.

Unzip the zippers and wash them with soap and water, then rinse with fresh water. If the zipper tape is very dirty, use a light solution of Woolite®-type fabric cleaner followed by thorough rinsing. Do not use any form of lubricant on the zippers.

Most scratches can be removed by hand polishing with EZ2CY® Scratch Remover . You can also use an electric buffer to facilitate the process. Keep moving over the scratched area, use light pressure, and moisten the area using a spray bottle with clean water. Rinse and follow with EZ2CY® Enclosure Cleaner/Polish.

Yes, avoid using window cleaning sprays, RAINEX®, kitchen scouring compounds, solvents such as acetone or lacquer thinner, cleaners that contain alcohol, and any form of lubricant. Exercise caution when using metal cleaner on pipe work adjacent to the enclosure.

EZ2CY® Enclosures are designed to remain on the boat, as the probability of scratching or damaging a panel outweighs any benefit of storage. If panels must be removed, contact an EZ2CY® Dealer for assistance. Avoid excessive bending when opening or closing a panel and consider the wind conditions. Open them to the top track for vertical zippers and hold the panel while unzipping the bottom zipper. Pull the panel in and up to the top and fasten it appropriately. If panels are rubbing on each other, use a soft product like a paper towel or clear suction cup to prevent scratching.

EZ2CY® Panels are designed to remain on the boat. The cost and likelihood of scratching or breaking a panel during removal outweigh any benefit of storage. If you need to remove your panels, don't hesitate to contact your EZ2CY® Dealer for assistance. Note: It's important to consult the official EZ2CY® documentation or contact an EZ2CY® Dealer for specific care instructions and any updates to the recommended maintenance procedures.

Yes, if desired, you can wax the EZ2CY® always consult the dealer first. Enclosure with a good quality auto paste wax (avoid waxes with color). After applying the wax, wipe it off with a damp cloth to remove static. Always remember to use EZ2CY cleaner and polish first.

Custom Flybridge Enclosure

This ‘M’ Class Deluxe Motoryacht manufactured by Outer Reef is a real gem. The brand new 70 footer is loaded with the latest electronics, navigation equipment and modern conveniences. The one accessory it didn't have was a flybridge enclosure. The yacht is sailing north for an Alaska vacation, so an enclosure is a must have. Fortunately, the owners came to the right place. Nobody does this sort of work better than the craftsmen at Mac's Upholstery.

custom flybridge enclosure

For this project, we used Stamoid ™ instead of standard material for the enclosure. Stamoid ™ is a special vinyl-coated polyester. It not only looks great, it provides commercial-grade performance and protection. It's the fabric of choice for superyachts.

Instead of clear vinyl for the curtains, we used thin sheets of polycarbonate. The premium polycarbonate we selected is rated "optically clear", which means it's just like glass. And unlike standard vinyl, it's scratch resistant. Each polycarbonate panel is zippered for easy on and off. Zippers make it convenient to adjust the climate inside the flybridge. They're also handy for changing the configuration or if a panel needs repair.

Everything about this custom flybridge enclosure is top shelf; just like the boat itself.

Custom Stairwell Hatch Cover For Yacht

custom yacht hatch

Our customer base includes many of Seattle's business and community leaders. Most value their privacy, so we can't identify the owner of this 140 foot yacht, but we can show you how we solved a vexing design problem.

A narrow spiral staircase (right) provides access to the top deck and flybridge. Originally, the stairwell was crowned with a sturdy fiberglass shell. The shell was heavy and difficult to open, but it kept out the elements.

The weight turned out to be a problem. One crew member nearly lost a finger when the heavy fiberglass shell slipped and pancaked his hand. The heavy shell was a menace.

We suggested a novel solution — replace the clunky one piece shell with a slim, custom engineered tri-fold canopy. As you can see (below) the canopy is built using a clear, scratch-resistant polycarbonite. The transparent, lightweight canopy easily unfolds then folds back down to provide a water tight barrier.

In addition to being safer, our unobtrusive tri-fold allows the stairwell to remain open when seas are calm. It looks great, too!

Custom Built Canvas Enclosure For Inflatable Boat

Inflatables are perfect for exploring Puget Sound; they're speedy and go almost anywhere thanks to shallow displacement.

When the owner of a 20 foot inflatable boat approached us to build a canvas enclosure we were thrilled. You don't see many inflatables with full canvas enclosures. The only thing we had to go on was a picture the customer pulled from a boating magazine. The picture was no help. The enclosure done for that inflatable was all wrong. It was poorly designed and slapped together. We decided to start from scratch and do it the right way.

inflatable boat with enclosure

At Mac's Boat and Yacht Canvas Shop, customer input drives both design and engineering. The owner of this inflatable boat wanted the freedom to stand-up and move around inside the enclosure. He wanted to pilot the boat without blind spots. He wanted plenty of visibility when sitting behind the spray hood. And he wanted the pontoons to double as casual seating. With that in mind, we went to work.

We came up with an innovative, "form follows function" design. For maximum visibility, we wrapped the enclosure in clear panels. Each individual panel is removable, allowing multiple configurations. We cut circular "port holes" on each side of the spray hood for forward visibility when seated. We set the enclosure height at six foot two and angled the windshield to allow plenty of space. There's so much room, you can even walk around in front of the console without bending over. We saved the most unusual design element for the pontoons.

The frame is constructed with 1 inch, .65 gauge stainless steel tubing. Since tubing can't be anchored to an air-filled pontoon, we're forced to bolt the frame into the deck. Normally, this would reduce square footage and restrict access to the pontoons. We engineered a way around this problem by custom-bending the support columns so they drape over the pontoons then extend up (above right). The pontoons could then be used for seating.

The custom canvas boat enclosure required plenty of back and forth between the customer and designer. In the end, the customer got exactly what he wanted; every angle and panel on this inflatable enclosure is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Restore Boston Whaler Cushions

These Boston Whaler cushions were pretty much toast when they came through the door. The foam had collapsed and the vinyl was cracking. There's nothing you can do about this sort of damage; time and the elements take their toll.

When restoring marine cushions, we use the finest quality polyurethane foam -- better than most manufacturers -- and durable, marine grade vinyl. In this instance, we rebuilt the cushion using sturdy, two inch HR-55 foam and pre-pleated vinyl. The vinyl was also embossed, giving the restored cushions an OEM look and feel.
