Dear Fellow & Respected Sailors, Now that I have my dayskipper certificate, I would look to go to the next level and start studying for the Coastal and Offshore . > Do you have experience with the books below ? They're both excellent. Just as the syllabus for the Practical calls for you to get a range of cruising experience into your logbook before presenting yourself for assessment, so also is it worthwhile to read more widely/watch a range of videos.... learn more and deeper as best you can. Saint Tom Cunliffe is good for this ( don't tell him I said so ). So also are Mike Peyton's little books of humourous* cartoons - every last one of which has a little gem of practical seamanship hidden inside. Above all, enjoy the journey. It's not the RYA that tests you.... *sorted

The Complete Yachtmaster by Tom Cunliff is better than the RYA Yachtmaster Handbook, in my view. However, Stress-Free Navigation and Stress-Free Sailing, both books by Duncan Wells will provide you with the skills you need, assuming you practise them. There is an RYA Shorebased Course, with exam, RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore. The shore based notes book covers the stuff you need for that. Later, if you want to get the certificate of competence, you need to be assessed by an Examiner, at sea, of your practical skills, which could also includes any subject from the shore based syllabus. You dont need your shore based course certificate to be assessed for "Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence". I found the Yachtmaster Handbook absolutely bang on for helping to prepare candidates for their practical exam. I reckon it's best timed to use it as a guide in the few weeks before taking the practical assessment. Every single candidate that I got to use this book passed their practical. I know the author a bit. As head of training at one time within the RYA he had a lot to do with improving the whole scheme. So if the guy who more or less invented lots of it writes the book on how to pass, for me that's made it exceptional value. ?

I think the Shorebaased Notes come free with the theory course, bundled with the Training Almanac and the charts of Narnian waters required for the exercises and exam.

It’s now almost 40 years since I was awarded my YM, and I assume that the syllabus has been tweaked and modified to take into account the technical advances over that period, for example knowledge of Morse code no longer seems to be a requirement, whilst back then the abréviation GPS would have just raised a blank stare. Maybe it’s a bit like us oldsters saying GCSE’s are easier now than when we did them, I don’t honestly know, but IMHO it is a really worthwhile exercise aiming for the YM and a fantastic feeling when the examiner says that they consider you competent and will recommend that you be granted a YM Certificate.

• Feats in D&D 's 2024 Player's Handbook are sorted into Origin, General, Fighting Style, and Epic Boon categories.
• Origin Feats are acquired from backgrounds, General Feats at level 4, Fighting Style Feats for martial classes, and Epic Boon Feats at level 19.
• Epic Boon Feats provide powerful boosts, overcoming defenses, energy resistances, and unique abilities for high-level characters.

Feats are a fun part of character customization in Dungeons & Dragons , and the 2024 Player's Handbook places a bigger emphasis on them than in the past. Feats give characters special features that aren't connected to those classes, whether they ultimately come from backgrounds or general progression. While the last edition of the Player's Handbook tucked feats into a brief shared chapter with multiclassing, the 2024 iteration dedicates an entire chapter to the concept, significantly expanding the roster and tweaking some feats to be more powerful or interesting than before.

Feats in the 2024 Player's Handbook are divided into four different categories — Origin, General, Fighting Style, and Epic Boon. Some methods of acquiring feats require that they need to be from one of these categories in particular, and meeting prerequisites is also necessary for a number of feats. Most feats can only be acquired once, but some can actually be stacked if they're noted to be Repeatable, offering different benefits chosen from a list of options.

The 2024 Player's Handbook features 10 species for players to build characters with, and there are a few key changes from the lineup in 2014.

All Origin Feats In D&D's 2024 Player's Handbook

Backgrounds grant unique perks.

Origin Feats are the first that many characters will acquire according to the 2024 Player's Handbook rules , gaining them from their background. Rather than offering direct stat boosts, Origin Feats provide various perks that make sense for adventurers starting out their journeys .

The newly updated 2024 Player's Handbook for Dungeons & Dragons is being released soon, and it will bring some exciting changes to the game.

All General Feats In D&D's 2024 Player's Handbook

Level 4 unlocks new options.

General Feats can't be acquired from the get-go, like Origin Feats, but they can still be accessed fairly early in long DnD campaigns . The default prerequisite across all General Feats is reaching level four , and some require certain ability score thresholds or features. General Feats are the largest category of feats, making them great for specialization.

The 2024 Player's Handbook introduces 10 completely new spells, all of which seem like they could be fun for the right character concept.

All Fighting Style Feats In D&D's 2024 Player's Handbook

Some martial classes get fighting bonuses.

Fighting Style Feats provide various boosts in specialization for martial characters , helping them lean into different techniques or preferred weapons. Fighters gain access to Fighting Style Feats at level one, while Paladins and Rangers have to wait a bit longer, receiving theirs at level two.

All Epic Boon Feats In D&D's 2024 Player's Handbook

High-level characters can show off.

Epic Boon Feats are essentially the opposite of Origin Feats in DnD , with characters gaining them after advancing to level 19 in their class. The boosts provided by Epic Boon Feats are appropriately heroic , topping off ability scores and offering impressive features that help make playing a high-level character in Dungeons & Dragons feel special.
