Carina rounding Fastnet Rock. "One of the best sailed boats of this era." --Dobbs David

With her second consecutive win of the coveted St. David's Lighthouse trophy in 2012's Newport - Bermuda race, Carina has become one of the most recognized racing yachts sailing today. Just a year after hitting the water she was entered into the history books with her fist win of the St. David's Lighthouse Trophy in the 1970 Bermuda Race.

According to Newport - Bermuda Race Official Website , "While the Bermuda Race has no official overall winner, the top boat in the St. David’s Lighthouse Division is generally regarded as the winner." Even after a 15 minute penalty for an unfortunate miscommunication regarding one of her crew member's professional status, Carina completed the course with more than 15 minutes to spare over her closest competitor, Defiance .

Review of Carina

Basic specs..

The boat equipped with a yawl rig. A yawl rig is generally considered easier to handle, because the sails are smaller, and because it can sail on most points to the wind with one sail completely taken down for repair or while reefing. The sail configuration of a yawl allows for better comfort and stability when sailing downwind or on a broad reach.

Unknown keel type

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 3.10 - 3.20 meter (10.17 - 10.47 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard engine

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenance than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Carina is 1.50, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.1 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Carina is about 294 kg/cm, alternatively 1649 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 294 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1649 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 15.85

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 59m 2 (635 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

June 11, 2014 – Today’s Newport Bermuda Race news:

Frank bohlen's gulf stream analysis  , crew lists    , special prizes   , sign up for official offshore emails, rives potts prepares carina for her 21st bermuda race.

By Talbot Wilson

Carina , the sturdy black-hulled McCurdy & Rhodes 48 foot sloop now owned by Rives Potts of Westbrook CT, has sailed the classic Newport Bermuda Race 20 times, more than any other boat. Under her original owner, Richard Nye she won the St. David’s Lighthouse Trophy in 1970. Potts won the trophy with Carina in 2010 and 2012. Now he is poised for a triple. If he makes it, he will break or tie some records along the way.

Here are the stats as composed by race historian John Rousmaniere:

Potts.12Prizegiving .TW.PPL

Most victories for a skipper:  3 (tie) — John Alden in three Malabars (1923, 1926, 1932), and Carleton Mitchell in Finisterre (1956, 1958, 1960);   2 (tie) — Robert N. Bavier Sr.,  Memory (1924) and Edlu (1934); Richard S. Nye, Carina (1952, 1970); Peter Rebovich, Sinn Fein (St. David’s Lighthouse Division 2006, 2008); Rives Potts, Carina (St. David’s Lighthouse Division, 2010, 2012)

Most victories for a boat:  4 —Carina (1970, 1982 and St. David’s Lighthouse Division, 2010, 2012); 3 —Finisterre (1956, 1958, 1960);   2 (tie) —Baruna (1938, 1948) and Sinn Fein, Peter Rebovich (2006, 2008)

Most successive victories in the same boat:  3 —Finisterre (1956, 1958, 1960), 2—Sinn Fein (2006, 2008), Carina (2010, 2012)

If Potts and the Carina crew win, Potts will move into a tie for the most victories by a skipper, Carina will set a record for the most victories by a boat, and Potts, Carina and crew will tie with Carleton Mitchell’s Finisterre with three successive victories.

Like the Triple Crown of horse racing fame the odds are against Carina. Potts mused, “I think the odds are about 1:165 against us... just like everyone else. Everyone has the same weather and the same Gulf Stream info and just about everyone entered in the race is a good sailor. I believe it comes down to whoever makes the right (or lucky) decisions a few times during the race.”

“Carina is a mid-sized boat in this race.” Potts added, “And hopefully she will benefit if we see average conditions. If the wind blows harder early on and then lessens later, the big boats will do well. If the winds are lighter early on then freshen on Tuesday and Wednesday, the smaller boats will be smiling. We are hoping for fairly steady conditions that will not favor either end of the scratch sheet.”

2012 Newport Bermuda Yacht Race -start in Narragansett Bay. Carina -USA 315 - McCurdy & Rhodes 48 yacht skippered by A Rives Potts Jnr, making the most of the blustery conditions. Carina is the provisional winner of the principal St David's Lighthouse

Potts hasn’t done anything to change Carina from her winning form. “We’ve just checked and fixed things to avoid unnecessary breakdowns. Mistakes cost time,” he emphasized, “and in this competitive fleet, one mistake or one gear failure can cost you several places.” Potts hasn’t adjusted his sail inventory for 2014, “just replaced or repaired damaged and worn out sails.”

When asked why he thinks Carina has done so well in Newport Bermuda racing whether its design, preparation, crew work, sails or all of these, Potts replied,  “All these factors figure into any good finish. I do believe that Carina's design likes the ocean conditions.... she tracks well, is comfortable for the crew, and seems to like all [wind and wave] conditions. The crew is really terrific.... quite a few fathers and sons... all "A" types who like to compete. They stay focused on the mission. And we have a good time.”

In 2012 Potts’ Carina was also on the winning Onion Patch Team getting one hand on the Onion Patch Trophy for the series. He would still like to finish as the top individual boat in the series and put both hands on the Henry B. duPont Trophy. Potts noted, however, “It is tough to be the top individual boat in a series like the Onion Patch series. You have to do well in all conditions... inshore and offshore, windward-leeward and around government marks and laid buoys in Bermuda.”

Potts commented on the new Navigators Division of the Onion Patch Series, with round the cans racing in the New York Yacht Club’s 160 th Annual Regatta presented by Rolex and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Anniversary Regatta in Bermuda.

2012 Newport Bermuda Race

“I love it!” he exclaimed. “I have been lobbying for a good while to offer more family friendly courses. Older heavier boats like Carina, and many of the older Swans and the like, plus the classics, do not enjoy the rigors of thrashing around a WL course day in and day out. It beats up the boats and the crews. Good for many, but not good for all... so alternative navigator courses will get more people racing and make sailing more fun... seems like a pretty good outcome.”

Potts concluded by saying, “The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee did a great job in pairing down many of the requirements for the race this year. They communicated with the competitors very well throughout. I believe that this year was the most user-friendly that I can remember.

"My hat is off to all of the dedicated volunteers who made this work for everyone. It is not easy.”

Stunning new Carina 20 runabout harks back to a golden age of American powerboating

Stop what you’re doing and get a towel – because if this boat fails to get you drooling, then nothing will.

It’s the new Carina 20 from Chris-Craft , which will be unveiled to the world for the first time at the upcoming Miami Boat Show .

The 21ft boat is classic Chris-Craft, and harks back to the 1920s with its vertical bow and stunning curved tumblehome.

Steve Heese , the Florida yard’s president, said: “The Carina 20 speaks to the past but the design appeal is forward-thinking and unmistakably Chris-Craft.”

The Carina 20 will also feature a number of new developments for the company, including a new frameless windscreen and graphite metallic hull colour.

Chris-Craft said this boat is the first of two vertical bow boats to be released this year, with the other, featuring a closed deck, landing in the summer.

We have no information on powerplant options or performance yet, but expect the Carina 20 to pack a speedy punch.

reports from Bermuda

Carina has won the St. David’s Lighthouse Division in the 2010 Newport Bermuda Race. Owned and sailed by Rives Potts (Westbrook, CT) with a crew blending four families, Carina is the 46th winner of the race’s top trophy in the 104-year history of the race, which runs 635 miles from Newport, RI to St. David’s Light, Bermuda.

The 48-foot McCurdy & Rhodes designed sloop won on corrected time under the Offshore Racing Rule by the very large margin of 3 hours, 35 minutes over Gregory B. Manning’s Sarah (Warwick, RI). Belle Aurore, a Cal 40 owned by R. Douglas Jurrius (Easton, MD) was third, seven minutes behind Sarah.

Carina’s chances for winning looked good but hardly certain when she finished the race at dawn Tuesday. Her chief challenge came from Belle Aurore and three other boats in Class 1, the small-boat class. Any of them could save their time and elbow Carina off the victory podium should she finish by about 7 PM. Many sailors at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and elsewhere spent much of Tuesday following the quartet’s progress on the online iBoattrack tracker. In the end, nobody was able to save their time on Carina.

Those four smaller boats still did well. Belle Aurore won Class 1 and took third place in the St. David’s Lighthouse Division. Two other Cal 40s, Peter Rebovich’s two-time defending champion Sinn Fein (Metuchen, NJ) and Bill Leroy’s Gone with the Wind (Tiburon, CA), took second in the class and seventh in the division, and third in class and eighth in the division, respectively. The fourth boat, David G. Dickerson’s Peterson 38 Lindy, was fourth in class and 20th in the division.

Carina also won the North Rock Beacon Trophy as the top boat under the IRC Rule, with a margin of nearly four hours over Gracie, a custom 69-footer owned by Stephen and Simon Frank (Darien and Rowayton, CT). Gracie was also designed by McCurdy & Rhodes. Third under IRC was Arbella, a First 44.7 owned by James Shaughnessy (Greenwich, CT).

As of Noon ADT Wednesday, 9 boats in the 183-boat fleet were still on the race course. This is the third largest Newport Bermuda Race since it was founded in 1906. The St. David’s Lighthouse Division, for amateur crews, is the largest of the race’s five divisions, with 103 boats this year.

Neal Finnegan’s Clover III (Dedham, MA), a Swan 56, is the provisional winner of the 39-boat Cruiser Division.

Jason A. Richter’s J-35 Paladin (Mt. Sinai, NY) leads the 26-boat Double-Handed Division for boats with two sailors, with a sistership, Darren Garnier’s Great Scot (Melrose, MA) 34 minutes back on corrected time. In third place is the four-time winner of this division, Richard du Moulin’s Express 37 Lora Ann, (Larchmont, NY). Five boats were still on the race course

On Tuesday Sir Geoffrey Mulcahy’s Swan 56 Noonmark VI (London, UK) became the provisional winner of the 13-boat Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Division for boats with professional crews, with a two and a half hour lead over Snow Lion, raced by Larry Huntington (New York, NY).

The Open Division, for the largest and fastest boats in the fleet, was won by the 90-foot Genuine Risk, sailed by Mark Watson, representing the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, which, together with the Cruising Club of America, organise the Newport Bermuda Race.

The boat is considered a classic for her looks, performance, and her history. Built in 1968 to a design by McCurdy & Rhodes – co-designer Jim McCurdy, now deceased, was the father of current Cruising Club of America Commodore Sheila McCurdy – she won the 1970 Bermuda Race under the ownership of Richard S. and Richard B. Nye. In 1982 Carina won the division for International Offshore Rule boats and finished second overall by 16 minutes. Subsequently purchased by Potts, Carina has sailed 19 Newport Bermuda Races, more than any other boat. Under his command, she has won silver in every Newport Bermuda Race since 2000, winning her class three times – and now a fourth, along with the race itself.

The race starts on June 18 at Newport, where the New York Yacht Club’s Sailing Center will serve as race headquarters.

Divisions and prizes: There are five divisions. The St David’s Lighthouse Trophy is awarded to the top boat in the race's largest and most historic division, which is for amateur crews. The Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Trophy goes to the winner of the professional division. The Cruiser Division winner is awarded the Carleton Mitchell Finisterre Trophy. First prize in the Double-Handed Division is the Moxie Trophy, given in memory of Philip S. Weld. The winner of the Open Division (for cant-keelers) is presented with the Royal Mail Trophy. In addition, the top boat under the IRC Rule receives the North Rock Beacon Trophy.

There also are prizes for first to finish, the winning navigator and family participation, plus the famous Galley Slave Trophy for the cook in the last boat to finish.

Carina Claims Victory in St. David’s Lighthouse Division at 53rd Newport Bermuda Race

' src=

Carina has triumphed in the St. David’s Lighthouse Division of the 53rd Newport Bermuda Race. The celebrated yacht crossed the finish line with a corrected time of two days, 16 hours, and 12 minutes, marking a historic moment as it secured its place as the most-winning yacht in the race’s 118-year history. This year, 96 boats competed in the St. David’s division.

Carina’s latest victory is its fourth in the Newport Bermuda Race, with previous wins in 1970, 2010, and 2012. Rives Potts, who has owned Carina for three of these victories, expressed immense pride in his crew. “It means a great deal, I’m just so proud of the crew,” said Potts, who greeted the sailors as they docked at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC). “A lot of [the crew] are on the boat for the very first time, and they all did well.”

Skipper W. Barrett Holby Jr. reflected on the race, highlighting the crew’s relentless effort. “From five minutes before the start we just raced hard. We realized we were doing well, but we didn’t think about that, we just kept racing.” Holby praised his team, saying, “Everybody pulled their own—we had great food, great navigation, great sailors, and great helmsmen. Everything came together.”

Carina managed to lead its class out of Narragansett Bay early on, though weather conditions near the top of the course presented challenges. Holby noted that at times it felt like the boat was under a personal rain cloud with still winds following them.

In the Gibbs Hill division, Summer Storm 52 emerged as the champion. The experienced crew, including owner and skipper Andy Berdon and navigator Chris “Lew” Lewis, who navigated the division’s winning boat in the 2022 race, delivered an exceptional performance. “It was champagne sailing most of the way for us,” Berdon commented. He credited boat captain Alec Snyder with the preparation, stating, “The boat was inside a shed in Germany in February, and it is now sitting on top of the podium in Bermuda.” Sixteen boats competed in the Gibbs Hill division, which has no limits on professional crew.

Scores of boats completed the race late Monday and early Tuesday, including some closely followed teams. Hound finished Monday night with a corrected time of two days, 16 hours, and 25 minutes. A 30-minute penalty for crossing the starting line early cost Hound the overall win, placing them just nine minutes behind Carina.

In the Finisterre division, Northeast Wind claimed victory with a corrected time of two days, 15 hours, and 53 minutes. Skipper Frank Sobchak and his crew aboard the Hinckley 48 sloop were elated upon learning of their success upon arrival in Bermuda.

The doublehanded division saw an inspirational win by Phil Haydon and Alexander Kraebel aboard their Sunfast 3300, Fearless. Haydon, founder of Sail for Epilepsy, dedicated the victory to his supporters and virtual shipmates. “We had a strategy we were going to execute, and we did, and it paid off. We have been working for over a year training, and all the hard work paid off,” Haydon said emotionally upon learning of their win.

At the time of writing, the crew of Gunga Din, who abandoned ship on Tuesday, have reported safely boarding Desna, a 37-foot boat now holding 14 people. “It was a snug night but everyone got some hot dinner,” they reported. Desna is racing to Bermuda and is expected to arrive Wednesday afternoon.

Carina Wins St. David’s Lighthouse Newport Race

Carina clinched victory in the St. David’s Lighthouse Division of the 53rd Newport Bermuda Race , finishing with a corrected time of two days and 16 hours and 12 minutes.

A spokesperson said, “The St. David’s Lighthouse Division of the 53rd Newport Bermuda Race has been won by Carina. Finishing with a corrected time of two days and 16 hours and 12 minutes, Carina sailed past the division’s namesake landmark just after 3:00 AM on Tuesday, securing its place in the history books as the most-winning yacht in the race’s 118-year history since its founding in 1906. 96 boats started in the St. David’s division.”

This is the fourth Newport Bermuda Race win for Carina [1970, 2010, 2012, 2024] — three of which have been under the ownership of Rives Potts. “It means a great deal, I’m just so proud of the crew,” said Potts, who met the boat and its sailors this morning as they docked at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club [RBYC]. “A lot of [the crew] are on the boat for the very first time, and they all did well.”

Carina’s skipper W. Barrett Holby, Jr. added, “from five minutes before the start we just raced hard. We realized we were doing well, but we didn’t think about that, we just kept racing.” Holby sang the praises of his crew saying, “everybody pulled their own—we had great food, great navigation, great sailors, and great helmsmen. Everything came together.”

The spokesperson said, “Carina was able to lead its class out of Narragansett Bay early but, like all competing vessels, was impacted by weather conditions near the top of the course. Holby stated that at times it felt like the boat had a personal rain cloud and still wind following the boat.

“In the Gibbs Hill division, Summer Storm 52 has become the Gibbs Hill Division Champion. That boat’s experienced crew included owner and skipper Andy Berdon and navigator Chris “Lew” Lewis, who also navigated the division’s winning boat in the last Newport Bermuda Race in 2022.”

“It was champagne sailing most of the way for us,” said Berdon. “The hardest part for us was getting out of Newport because a series of fronts caused light and variable winds. We were able to outside Newport and keep up speed the whole way to get into the ocean breeze.”

The spokesperson said, “Berdon credits boat captain Alec Snyder with the boat preparation as well. The boat was inside a shed in Germany in February, and it is now sitting on top of the podium in Bermuda. There were 16 boats in Gibbs Hill, a division that has no limits on professional crew.

“Scores of boats completed the race late Monday and early Tuesday, including some closely followed teams. Hound crossed the finish line Monday night with a corrected time of two days and 16 hours and 25 minutes. This includes a 30-minute penalty for crossing the starting line early – which means as the delta between Carina and Hound is 9 minutes, the penalty cost Hound the overall win.

“In the Finisterre division, Northeast Wind won with a corrected time of 2 days 15 hours and 53 minutes. Skipper Frank Sobchak, along with his Hinckley 48 sloop and crew, were thrilled upon arriving in Bermuda to learn of their victory.

“In the doublehanded division, the inspirational Phil Haydon and his Alexander Kraebel sailed into the top spot on board their Sunfast 3300 Fearless. Haydon founded Sail for Epilepsy and uses his story and journey to educate and inspire. He says they were not following the tracker at all during the race, so they are so happy and emotional to learn about their win upon arriving in Bermuda.”

“We had a strategy we were going to execute, and we did, and it paid off. We have been working for over a year training, and all the hard work paid off.” Haydon dedicates the win to his virtual shipmates, those supporters he hopes to inspire to take “one more step” and “Fear. Less.”

The spokesperson said, “Results for the remainder of the 53rd Newport Bermuda Race can be followed using our Live Results Page , including division winners.

“At the time of writing, the crew of Gunga Din, who abandoned ship on Tuesday, reported that they were all safely aboard Desna, a 37-foot boat now holding 14. “It was a snug night but everyone got some hot dinner.” They are racing to Bermuda and expected Wednesday afternoon.”

2024 Newport Bermuda Race

Published on June 27th, 2024 by Assoc Editor -->

On June 21, 2024, 162 boats set sail from Newport, racing towards the Gulf Stream and kicking off the 53rd Newport Bermuda Race. 4,000 race fans along the shoreline, spectating the first time off Fort Adams, watched them start their journey to Bermuda.

The first night was expected to be slow, as storms affecting southern New England had dampened the wind. It’s a race to get away from land and into the next prevailing ocean breeze and Gulf Stream current.

At just shy of 48 hours into the 53rd Newport Bermuda Race, and there was already a dismasting, an abandoned ship, and a few retirements. Despite these challenges, the fleet encountered a variety of sailing conditions and sea states as they made their way to Bermuda. As the navigator on the expected first-to-finish Pyewacket 70, Peter Isler, said, “We have had every headsail up in the inventory (except the storm jib).”

Roy P. Disney’s Pyewacket, Volvo 70, arrived in Bermuda achieving the line honor finish with an elapsed time of 02d 11:17:35.

Sailors faced very light conditions off the coast of New England after the start as passing thunderstorms on land diminished the wind, making it a drifter at sea. Unfortunately, the JV 72, Proteus, owned by George Sakellaris, dismasted at 0200 on June 22 while sailing normally in moderate conditions due to a mast failure at the base. All crew were unharmed, the rig was cut away, and the crew safely returned to Newport. That day the breeze filled in, and the boats made quick progress along the rhumb line towards Bermuda.

At 0300 on the morning of June 23, Alliance USA 52770 J/122, owned by Eric Irwin and Mary Martin, reported dealing with water ingress via a rudder post and subsequently decided to abandon ship. Multiple competitors stopped racing and stood by to assist as needed. By 0400, all crew were safely aboard the J/121 Ceilidh, which will now resume racing with the Alliance crew, and was estimated to arrive in Bermuda on June 25.

Roy Disney’s Pyewacket 70 was expected to be the first to finish in Bermuda off St. David’s Lighthouse. On June 23, also sitting on top of the Live Leaderboard for the Gibbs Hill Division, but close behind was Andrew Berdon’s Summer Storm 52.

In the St. David’s Lighthouse Division, Carina and Hound looked to be battling for the top spot. These two teams have a long history as powerhouses in the Bermuda Race going back 50 years. Carina has won the race 3 times since her launch over 50 years ago but not since 2012. Hound was built for the Bermuda Race in 1970 by the father of the skipper, Art Santry helming Temptation. Hound has 88 Bermuda Races among the crew onboard to Carina’s 67.

On June 24, pending any protests, Summer Storm 52 and its crew will be the champions of the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Division of the 53rd Newport Bermuda Race.

Just five months ago, this boat, owned and skippered by Andy Berdon, was stored in a shed in Germany. After a series of repairs, bringing the vessel across the Atlantic to Florida, and finally up to Newport, Summer Storm 52 sailed into Bermuda with a corrected time of just over two days and 10 hours.

For navigator Chris “Lew” Lewis, this is the second Bermuda Race in a row in which he has emerged victorious. Berdon credits the win to the crew’s ability to avoid fronts approaching the coast of New England on the first night of sailing.

On June 26, competing boats have been crossing the finish line since the early hours of Monday, June 24. The St. David’s division.

This is the fifth Newport Bermuda Race win for Carina (1970, 1982, 2010, 2012, 2024), three of which have been under the ownership of Rives Potts. “It means a great deal, I’m just so proud of the crew,” said Potts, who met the boat and its sailors this morning as they docked at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC).

Carina was able to lead its class out of Narragansett Bay early but, like all competing vessels, was impacted by weather conditions near the top of the course. Holby stated that at times it felt like the boat had a personal rain cloud and still wind following the boat.

In the Gibbs Hill division, Summer Storm 52 has become the Gibbs Hill Division Champion. That boat’s experienced crew included owner and skipper Andy Berdon and navigator Chris “Lew” Lewis, who also navigated the division’s winning boat in the last Newport Bermuda Race in 2022.

“It was champagne sailing most of the way for us,” said Berdon. “The hardest part for us was getting out of Newport because a series of fronts caused light and variable winds. We were able to outside Newport and keep up speed the whole way to get into the ocean breeze.”

Berdon credits boat captain Alec Snyder with the boat preparation as well. The boat was inside a shed in Germany in February, and it is now sitting on top of the podium in Bermuda. There were 16 boats in Gibbs Hill, a division that has no limits on professional crew.

Scores of boats completed the race late June 24 and early Tuesday, June 25, including some closely followed teams. Hound crossed the finish line during the night with a corrected time of two days and 16 hours and 25 minutes. This includes a 30-minute penalty for crossing the starting line early – which means as the delta between Carina and Hound is 9 minutes, the penalty cost Hound the overall win.

In the Finisterre division, Northeast Wind won with a corrected time of 2 days 15 hours and 53 minutes. Skipper Frank Sobchak, along with his Hinckley 48 sloop and crew, were thrilled upon arriving in Bermuda to learn of their victory.

In the doublehanded division, the inspirational Phil Haydon and his Alexander Kraebel sailed into the top spot on board their Sunfast 3300 Fearless. Haydon founded Sail for Epilepsy and uses his story and journey to educate and inspire. He says they were not following the tracker at all during the race, so they are so happy and emotional to learn about their win upon arriving in Bermuda.

“We had a strategy we were going to execute, and we did, and it paid off. We have been working for over a year training, and all the hard work paid off.” Haydon dedicates the win to his virtual shipmates, those supporters he hopes to inspire to take “one more step” and “Fear. Less.”

Gunga Din, a Swedish Yachts 41 owned by Robert Fye and Paul Cunningham, with a total crew of seven, had to abandon ship 80 miles from Bermuda due to water ingress. All crew members were successfully transferred, unharmed, to Desna, a Tartan 37 owned by Adam Van Voorhis with seven also aboard. All 14 are now making their way towards Bermuda expected late tonight. It is unknown at this time what precisely caused the water ingress. They were racing to Bermuda and were expected Wednesday afternoon, June 26.
