Inside the star yacht of Below Deck Down Under season two
Television network Bravo will begin airing season two of Below Deck Down Under on 17 July, a Below Deck spin-off which follows a yacht crew over an eight-week charter season in Australia. This instalment sees Captain Jason Chambers return at the helm, cruising guests around the warm, tropical waters and colourful cays of the near-uninhabited Whitsunday Islands. Making her debut down under is Northern Sun , a Japanese superyacht with an unexpected history. BOAT takes a look inside…
Delivered in 1976 under the name Hokko Maru (“Northern Light”), Northern Sun has lived a full and fascinating life. At 50.8 metres, she was the largest yacht built by Narasaki Shipbuilding at the time and worked as an ice-class research vessel, analysing marine life and ocean currents in the North Japan Sea. The transformation from ship to superyacht came in 2006 when she underwent a two-year refit, courtesy of her new owners.
Northern Sun has the hardy constitution of an explorer, marking a departure from the first season’s white boat Keri Lee III .
When her current owners undertook renovations, they were intent to elevate her to superyacht standards while still maintaining her distinctive look. Her old windlasses are still visible on the forward deck, the master cabin has retained its original camber and even the engine room looks exactly as it did when she was a research ship. "Looks" being the operative word, of course – she’s had several system upgrades since the 70s.
Interiors include natural materials such as narra and makore wood (commonly known as cherry mahogany). This dark wood furniture and wall panelling give Northern Sun her warm, traditional feel, while the cabins themselves are dotted with the owners’ collection of travel paraphernalia. It makes for an eclectic living space, with indoor sofa seating accented by authentic Persian rugs and the formal dining room and master suite fixed with guild-frame, 19th century oil paintings. Keep an eye out for one of the owners’ most coveted pieces, a 100-year-old ship’s clock which still rings out the two-hour, maritime work shift also known as "the dog watch".
Northern Sun’s main deck is dedicated entirely to entertainment, from the al fresco dining area to the main saloon with its piano and games table. Other leisure highlights include gym equipment, a dedicated library on the lower deck and an outdoor Jacuzzi, surrounded by sun pads and lounge beds. The owners’ addition of a forward seating area during her refit allows for versatile recreation, whether the mood calls for cocktail parties or quiet, waterside contemplation.
The superyacht naturally has impressive stowing capacity, with space for scuba-diving equipment, a waterski and a two-deck-high inflatable water slide. There are also two Laser sailboats, enabling nimbler exploration along Australia’s shallow bays and coral reefs.
The owners spent ten years cruising through Southeast Asia after Northern Sun was refitted. Using the superyacht as a base for adventures, they've scuba-dived in the Andaman Sea, kayaked in the mangrove swamps of Phang Nga Bay and explored some of Indonesia’s most remote fishing islands. In 2015, they decided to put Northern Sun on the charter market, where she quickly became one of the most popular yachts available in Thailand. Now, she’s made her way across the seas to become the breakout star of Below Deck Down Under .
Captain Jason will be joined by returning chief stew Aesha Scott, working alongside a brand-new crew.
Northern Sun is currently listed with Ocean Independence , with a weekly charter starting from $161,700 and an asking price of $15,000,000.

Captain Glenn Shephard and his crew board the Parsifal III, a 55 metre luxury sailing yacht, where tension simmers as they hustle to get ready for their first charter of the season.
Chief Stew Jenna is feeling the pressure as she is tasked with planning an impromptu wedding for two drunk guests; two yachties have a steamy interaction that makes their professional relationship personal.
After a wild night out, Jenna wades through a sea of regrets and braces for the awkward interactions that follow, then a group of high-maintenance, vegan guests board Parsifal, and Adam struggles to live up to their expectations.
Parker feels the strain of being on charter and his lack of maturity shows; Jenna criticises Georgia's laundry system and sends her away in tears; Parsifal greets a newborn and baby talk fills the yacht as Adam and Jenna's relationship blooms.
Parsifal sails into strong winds with a baby on board; Adam and Jenna's relationship heats up; Jenna sends Madison to do a beach picnic setup with little notice; Ciara and Parker get into a spat about deck duties.
Paget's patience runs out when he must pick up the slack after the Parsifal crashes into the dock; a new charter of men sets sail in all of their chest-bumping glory, and the crew scramble to meet their incessant demands.

What can fans expect from 'Below Deck Down Under'?
It looks like fans can expect a whole lot of action on this season of 'Below Deck Down Under'. As per the synopsis of the series, "Set against the stunning backdrop of the tropical Whitsunday Islands and world-famous Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Australia, the Peacock Original series Below Deck Down Under explores the complex, often explosive dynamics of the crew and a rotating group of demanding charter guests on M/Y Thalassa. This season, Captain Jason Chambers is joined by a familiar face, fan-favorite Aesha Scott as Chief Stew, along with newcomers Chef Ryan McKeown and Bosun Jamie Sayed."
"Stews Tumi Mhlongo and Magda Ziomek are also on board with deckhands Culver Bradbury, Brittini Burton, and Ben Crawley. Setting the tone for the entire crew, the youthful, charming new captain has a hands-on leadership approach and will do whatever it takes to make sure the guests have an unforgettable vacation, including mesmerizing under-water excursions like scuba diving, snorkeling, and some close encounters with marine life. Though the dynamics on board are initially smooth sailing, a boatload of problems bubble up when the Chef immediately falls out of sync with the Chief Stew. The deck team also hits rocky waters when the Bosun's firm management style is called into question by a free-spirited team member with an aversion to rules. Meanwhile on the interior, Chief Stew Aesha learns the hard way that not everyone on her team will be motivated by her friend-first work mentality. Between charters, the yachties blow off steam by taking full advantage of Australia's world-renowned nightlife, where drama, surprising flirtations, and wild adventures heat up their well-deserved nights off," the synopsis further reads. Peacock will be premiering 'Below Deck Down Under' on Thursday, March 17.

Delivered in 2008 by Italian shipyard Benetti, the yacht has an impressive sleek, supercar-inspired profile that instantly turns heads.

One of the yacht's most distinctive features is her sophisticated spiral staircase that leads through all three decks and is lit by a skylight in the spa pool of the sun deck. The yacht is very versatile for a variety of charter party configurations, with room for 12 guests across six elegantly appointed cabins.
STARSHIP (aka MY SEANNA)
Making an appearance on seasons 9, 8 and 6 of Below Deck , the majestic motor yacht STARSHIP (known on the show as MY SEANNA) is a yacht charter favorite.
The yacht has traveled far and wide for the show cruising to the jaw-droppingly beautiful St Kitts and Nevis in season 9, the sun-kissed Caribbean in season 8 and the South Pacific islands of Tahiti in season 6.
Known for being among one of the most opulent yachts on the charter market due to her ornate interiors and glossy fittings that have been brushed in 22-carat gold, it is safe to say that this yacht is one of the most opulently styled and extensively equipped yachts on the water. Refitted in 2021, the Delta Marine yacht can accommodate 12 guests across 6 cabins and is extremely versatile for a variety of yacht charter party configurations.
VALOR (aka BG)
Appearing three times on the hit show, the 47m (153ft) charter yacht BG (known on the show as VALOR) featured in seasons 7, 5 and 4 of Below Deck , taking charter guests to a variety of sun-kissed and beautiful locations. The yacht traveled around Thailand in Season 7 where the crew and viewers were treated to a truly memorable South East Asian experience. From the iconic Phi Phi Islands to the beautiful beaches of Ko Yao Yai, there were plenty of fascinating landmarks to see on the way. Season 5 took viewers to the tranquil cruising grounds of Saint Martin whilst season 4 saw M/Y BG in the glistening waters of the Virgin Islands .
Accomodating 12 guests across 6 cabins, she is also capable of carrying up to 10 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht charter experience.
EROS (aka STAY SALTY)
Season 3 of Below Deck was announced after a hugely successful second-season finale, which was the highest-rated episode of the series. The new season saw the crew head to the Bahamas onboard superyacht STAY SALTY known on the show as EROS.
She is equipped with an array of luxurious amenities including an eight-person sundeck Jacuzzi, barbecue and yacht-wide sound system. She also boasts timeless interior styling with intricate wood panelling and a neutral colour palette which helps create an inviting atmosphere for those on board.
The yacht was sold in November 2013 - just before filming for season 3 began - for an asking price of $17.9 million.
OHANA (aka STAR DIAMOND)
Premiering in August 2014, season 2 of Below Deck returned with 13 episodes documenting life on board the slightly smaller superyacht STAR DIAMOND in the British Virgin Islands . Among many other features, the yacht is equipped with a large sundeck, outdoor bar and luxury accommodation for 10 guests.
After filming the series, M/Y STAR DIAMOND was sold for an asking price of $10.9 million and is now on the charter market with a charter rate of $160,000/week. Extensively refit in 2022, the work on the superyacht has included a complete interior refresh, the yacht now features light, modern styling - an engine rebuild and a cabin conversion.
HONOR (aka BARENTS )
The first season of Below Deck premiered on 1 July 2013 after being announced in April 2012. Chartering around the Caribbean , the starring superyacht was named HONOR for the show but chartered under the name CUOR DI LEONE which translates to ‘Lion Heart’ in Italian. She now goes by the name BARENTS .
Built by Italian shipyard Benetti in 1999 and refit in 2021, the famous vessel has undergone a complete makeover, bringing her up to modern standards. She can accommodate up to 12 charter guests and features luxury amenities for guests to enjoy including state-of-the-art TVs and a sundeck Jacuzzi.
Following the show, superyacht BARENTS was sold for around $15 million and her new owner commissioned a major refit. A great deal of money was spent on updating her interior with a classic-modern style of design as well as on brand-new exterior furniture and entertainment systems.
Below Deck: Mediterranean
Following on from the success of Below Deck , the spin-off Below Deck: Mediterranean premiered in May 2016. While the original series takes place during the winter charter season when the Caribbean is at its peak, Below Deck: Mediterranean is filmed during the summer charter season.
Season one of Below Deck: Mediterranean saw Captain Mark Howard at the helm, but the baton was passed to Captain Sandy Yawn from two onwards. Chief Stewardess Hannah Ferrier was another permanent fixture on the show from season one to five, before leaving the show in season six.
As its name suggests, the show is based in the Mediterranean , the world’s most popular yachting hub from May to October. Despite the change in location, the same format and accompanying on-water antics from the crew and guests alike can be expected. Below, all the names of the superyachts which have appeared on the show, and the cost to rent them.

Set in the Ligurian Riviera, the hit Bravo series returns to Italy for the first time since season 3. The series followed the crew from mid-August until mid-September of 2022 onboard the 180-feet superyacht MUSTIQUE .
Holding up to 12 guests across 6 classically decorated cabins, this yacht is the epitome of elegance with its glossy mahogany paneling and cream upholstery. She is replete with water toys, including kayaks, a seabob, waterskis, and Zapata Flyboards, and has expansive deck areas– offering plenty of scope for both crew and guest antics which make Below Deck: Mediterranean so entertaining.
Season 7 of Below Deck: Mediterranean returned to the screens in July 2022 and brought back more drama and wealthy clientele, creating endless entertainment for viewers at home. Set in Malta , a destination never seen before on the show, the series followed the crew over an eight-week charter season onboard the 49m (160ft) superyacht HOME .
Accommodating up to 12 guests across 6 beautifully decorated staterooms, this yacht is described as a home away from home, the perfect platform for guests to soak up the sunshine, kick back and relax. From her convivial sundeck setup replete with a Jacuzzi and glowing cocktail bar to her panoramic sky lounge and state-of-the-art water toys, this yacht certainly had the wow factor that was required for Below Deck: Mediterranean .
LADY MICHELLE (renamed NEXT CHAPTER)
Season 6 of Below Deck: Mediterranean premiered in June 2021 and saw a new vessel, motor yacht LADY MICHELLE , since re-named NEXT CHAPTER, take center stage. It also saw the return of Captain Sandy and Bosun Malia, plus a brand new crew.
A floating paradise that turns heads on the water, this heavenly Benetti vessel comfortably accommodates 12 guests across 6 sumptuous staterooms, with additional capacity for up to 12 crew members. She also boasts an open-air cinema, a split-level owner's suite and an impressive array of water toys.
This season takes the crew to one of the most idyllic cruising grounds in the East Mediterranean : Croatia . Abounding with serene golden beaches, crystalline waters and gorgeous coves to explore, it's one of the most popular yacht charter destinations.
THE WELLINGTON (aka THE WELLESLEY)
Season 5 of Below Deck: Mediterranean premiered in the summer of 2020. The show was shot on board the motor yacht THE WELLESLEY , and the superyacht was given the alias THE WELLINGTON over the course of filming.
The yacht has an elegant 1920's theme, with a chic club lounge complete with a bespoke humidor. She features plenty of marble accents and ample alfresco deck areas, as well as a jacuzzi with innovative spill pool features.
The yachties set course for Spain for this season, cruising around the azure waters of the Balearic Islands . The homeport was Port Adriano on the island of Mallorca .
Featuring in both Season 4 and Season 2 of Below Deck: Mediterranean , superyacht SIROCCO is a yacht charter sensation. An elegant and sophisticated Heesen -built motor yacht, she features plenty of alfresco sunning areas and an 8-person jacuzzi pool; the perfect spot for the charter guests to unwind after a long day exploring.
Season 4 took the crew to one of the most iconic destinations in the Mediterranean ; the South of France . Between the luxury yachting hub of Monaco to the beautiful beaches in St Tropez , this season promises lashings of glitz and glamour. During Season 2 of Below Deck: Mediterranean , M/Y SIROCCO cruised the picturesque waters of Croatia .
TALISMAN MAITON
Premiering in 2018, season 3 of Below Deck: Mediterranean saw familiar and new faces head to the sublime cruising grounds of Italy. This time, the crew treated their discerning guests to a world of luxury on board the 54m/178ft motor yacht TALISMAN MAITON .
Built in 2006 and refit to an exacting standard in 2016, the yacht boasts a range of exciting features that make her particularly appropriate for the waters of the Amalfi Coast . Indeed, her entertainment options range from a stunning selection of water toys to a sundeck Jacuzzi and a refreshingly modern interior.
IONIAN PRINCESS
Premiering on 3 May 2016, the very first season of Below Deck: Mediterranean , a spin-off of the increasingly popular franchise, took to viewers' screens. This time the ‘yachties’ took care of their guests onboard the motor yacht IONIAN PRINCESS in the Mediterranean destination of Greece .
The starring yacht IONIAN PRINCESS was delivered from Christensen in 2005 and was later refit in 2016 and again in 2021. Truly opulent, she bears interiors that are sleekly finished with a range of warmly toned woods and plenty of comfortable furnishings. She also boasts one of the largest sundecks for a yacht of her size.
Below Deck: Mediterranean Season 1 yacht IONIAN PRINCESS is not currently available for private yacht charter vacations.
Below Deck: Sailing Yacht
This is the first time the Below Deck franchise branched away from gleaming motor yachts, with the various weather issues that sailing yachts have to contend with adding even more drama and excitement.
The design of luxury sailing yachts also creates far more confined crew areas than we are used to seeing on the original Below Deck . In general, sailing yachts tend to feature smaller galleys, compact stew stations and cramped crew quarters which are in closer proximity to the guests’ living areas, putting crew under increased pressure to deliver their signature silver service.
In addition, deck crew are placed in a far more demanding role, with sailing yachts requiring increased accuracy and precision to safely maneuver and plenty of deck duties taking place in the midst of guest areas.

Tahiti, St. Thomas and the French Riviera — I’ve yachted in all of these exotic locales, albeit from the comfort of my couch. And, millions of Americans are in the same boat.
In 2013, “Below Deck,” introduced the masses to the most glamorous mode of traveling: yachting. Since then, it’s become a Bravo mainstay with Season 9 of “Below Deck Mediterranean’’ premiering in June.
But how real is the reality show? I spent five nights on a yacht in Croatia to find out.
A tip on tipping
My suitcase wasn’t bursting with Benjamins. An agency at your final destination provides cash for the crew’s tip money. While you’re expected to tip $30,000 for a two-night cruise on “Below Deck,” in real life you only have to tip 10% to 15% of your charter fee. That’s about $10,000 for a two-night cruise on a 180-foot charter yacht like Mustique (from $250,000 a week), which stars in the new season.
According to Zvonimir Androi, president of the yacht charter company Via Croatia, more often than not, the tip comes from what’s left over after provisioning.
So, shun the Dom Pérignon and skip the beluga caviar, and you’ll have money to spare.
What’s up, dock?
In real life, “Below Deck’s” favorite commercial-break cliff-hanger isn’t nearly as dramatic. Docking in our yacht, Via Croatia’s five-cabin, 100-foot Adriatic Escape (from $52,800 a week), was breezy.
I asked the crew if they hated setting up the slide — a tortuous, Herculean task if you believe what you see on TV.
“It’s not that bad,” a twentysomething Croatian deckhand, as cute as his on-screen counterparts, told me. “That said, we’re definitely not sad if you don’t ask for it.”
Play it cool
Despite being served meat on more than one occasion, my vegetarian co-guests on board weren’t divas when it came to cuisine — a major source of chef-related stress on the show.
Tantrums aren’t the norm Barbie Pascual, the “Below Deck” stewardess famous for putting up with former “RHONY” star Jill Zarin’s demands for the perfect Diet Coke in the “Real Housewives of Grenada” episode, tells me. “Guests know they are being filmed so their reactions are more extreme than they’d be if the cameras weren’t around,” she says.
Pascual’s biggest tip for first-time yachters? Don’t go skinny dipping, like they do on the show, after dark.
“People forget about currents, sharks, etc.,” she says. “Jumping in the water should always be with the captain’s consent!”
Our humorless Croatian yacht captain was a far cry from “Below Deck Mediterranean’s” affable Captain Sandy Yawn. I think we only saw him twice over the course of four days, and he definitely didn’t join us for dinner.
That was fine by us because the stews and deckhands were always handy with anything we needed — including at chat.
Asking for it
“No” is a word you’ll never hear on a yacht, unless there is a safety issue, Pascual says.
While we didn’t ask our crew to do a striptease or decorate for ‘70s night (two recurring requests on the show), out-there demands aren’t out of the question, as long as you’re willing to pay for it.
For example, Via Croatia is currently retrofitting one of its multimillion-dollar superyachts for an upcoming charter booked by a multigenerational Jewish family from Florida.
“In addition to paying the charter fee, the client is literally buying everything new: pots, pans, silverware, etc.” said Androi. “They’re even spending $30,000 on a new tender for the elderly mother-in-law.”
Now, I’m no reality show producer, but a picky primary trying to keep his wife, her elderly mom and their kosher kids happy at sea has the makings of an Emmy Award-winning episode.
Yachting on a budget
Charters are cheapest at the beginning and end of a destination’s season. Via Croatia’s yuppiest yacht, the 160-foot, 12-cabin Agape Rose , fetches $200,000 a week in July and August. But it’s just $164,000 a week in April and October. Divide that by 24 of your closest friends and family and it’s just $6,800 a person.
If that’s still too much, consider booking a yacht club suite on one of MSC Cruises ’ Mediterranean voyages.
Sure, you’ll be on a cruise liner, but for $1,659 a person you’ll be treated to seven nights of private butler service with a private pool and restaurant that the pleb passengers don’t even know exists.

Will Gary King's Scandal Will Affect His Friendship With Daisy Kelliher On Below Deck Sailing Yacht?
- Will Gary's behavior affect his friendship with Daisy on Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5?
- Despite sexual assault allegations, Daisy and Gary are still friends, as seen on social media.
- Recent interactions and posts suggest that Daisy stands by Gary amid the accusations.
Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 may be on the horizon, but many are wondering if Gary King’s problematic behavior will impact his longtime friendship with Daisy Kelliher on the upcoming seaso n. Gary, who’s been the First Officer on Below Deck Sailing Yacht since its second season, has had a long friendship with Daisy, the Chief Stew aboard Parsifal III. While Gary and Daisy both work beneath Captain Glenn Shephard, the pair have been able to maintain their friendship for years prior to Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 . Even after a tough charter season last year, they stayed close.
Gary, who’s been criticized for sexual assault allegations from a Below Deck franchise makeup artist , has been struggling in his personal and professional relationships for the last year. After the allegations, Gary’s behavior seemed to be predominantly about denying the accusations and clearing his name . Without proof surrounding the accusations, it seemed possible that it there would be minimal fallout after the news came out, but Below Deck Sailing Yacht viewers wanted Gary to be held accountable for his behavior. With Bravo choosing to take Gary off the BravoCon lineup and delaying Below Deck Sailing Yacht, things have been tough.
20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now
Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.
Gary & Daisy Recently Met Up
The pair saw each other in australia.
Although Daisy hasn’t spoken up about Gary’s sexual assault allegations , it’s possible that they haven’t impacted her friendship with Gary in the last year. Recently, Daisy posted a series of photos on Instagram that feature Gary out and about at an Australian distillery. With Daisy, Gary, and a few of their friends posing together throughout the post , it appears that the pair have spent some time together after getting off Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5’s charter. Many have been curious if the cast has seen each other off the sailing yacht, and Daisy’s post makes it clear they have.
Gary & Daisy Still Follow Each Other On Social Media
Theyve kept in touch online.
While Daisy may have been posting the photos to honor the announcement that Below Deck Sailing Yacht would be returning in the fall, she also still follows Gary on social media. Daisy’s Instagram, which is typically quite active, is something that she regularly updates for her followers. With her being very active, the fact that Daisy still follows Gary is something she would notice, should she want to distance herself from the longtime First Officer. Instead, Daisy and Gary mutually follow each other and interact with each other’s posts on the photo-sharing app, making it clear they’re still in contact.
Gary & Daisy Are Likely Still Friends
She may not believe the allegations.
Although many Below Deck Sailing Yacht viewers were hopeful that Gary’s behavior would have Daisy choosing to distance herself from her longtime friend, it appears that the pair are likely still good friends. With Daisy still following Gary on social media and posting with him in recent photos, it seems clear that she is on Gary’s side when it comes to the accusations . Hopefully, Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 will provide some clarity on Gary’s stance on the allegations, potentially even clearing them up or seeing him choose to speak up on what’s happened in the last tumultuous year.

Mike Lynch spent nearly a decade in court. A few months after winning his freedom, mother nature struck his family's yacht The Bayesian

Mike Lynch — known as Britain's Bill Gates — battled for nearly a decade to beat accusations he had built his tech fortune on a fraudulent deal, only to enjoy that freedom for just a few months before tragedy struck.
When Mr Lynch sold his company Autonomy to Hewlett Packard, the deal was worth $US11 billion ($16.4 billion) and rocketed him up the rich list. But it would also become the focus of some of the biggest legal battles in corporate history.
When he walked free of the criminal charges in June, Mr Lynch told the Times: "It's bizarre, but now you have a second life. The question is, what do you want to do with it?"
But all the money in the world cannot control the weather and on Sunday night the Lynch family's luxury yacht was struck by a sudden storm, with reports a freak ocean phenomenon ultimately caused the shipwreck.
Mr Lynch and his daughter Hannah remain missing after The Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday, with 10 crew and 12 guests aboard.
Fifteen people managed to escape, and so far one man, the yacht's chef, has been confirmed dead.
Six others remain missing, with reports emerging those not accounted for include legal and banking executives.
Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer who represented Mr Lynch in his long-running US trial, are among the missing.
The wives of both men are also unaccounted-for, Sicily's civil protection agency head Salvo Cocina said.
Italian authorities are continuing to search the area where the 56-metre luxury boat went down.
Eyewitnesses said the yacht disappeared rapidly while anchored off Porticello, not far from the Sicilian capital of Palermo.
Bad weather had been expected, but according to Mr Cocina, the yacht happened to be in "the wrong place at the wrong time" and was likely hit by something called a waterspout.
Freak weather takes down yacht
For weeks before the disaster, Italy had experienced scorching heat waves. The nation had issued red alerts across more than 20 cities that saw sweltering and dangerous conditions.
But forecasts promised relief was on the way.
By Sunday night, cooler air would arrive and temperatures would drop, but the forecasts also predicted that with the dramatic shift in weather patterns would come storm activity, and some of it would be severe.
Italy has a history of offshore tornadoes — or waterspouts.
"Tornadic waterspouts" are described by the US National Ocean Service as tornadoes that form over water or "move from land to water".
"They have the same characteristics as a land tornado. They are associated with severe thunderstorms and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail and frequent dangerous lightning."
Early Monday morning, as the meteorological service predicted, cooler air arrived, temperatures dropped and instability increased across the country.
The small fishing village of Porticito on Sicily's western seaboard was battered by a sudden and fierce storm, with what looked like waterspouts reported out to sea.
Witnesses said at about 5am Monday, a tornado-like cloud engulfed the British-flagged Bayesian.
By daybreak, the skies were clear and the sea was calm.
But the Bayesian was 50 metres below the surface, with reports emerging that a waterspout struck precisely where the 56-metre yacht had been moored.
Italian climatologist Luca Mercalli told Reuters the episode could have been a waterspout or a downburst — a more frequent phenomenon that doesn't involve the rotation of the air.
"We don't know which it was because it all happened in the dark in the early hours of the morning, so we have no photographs," he said.
In Italy, waterspouts can involve winds of up to 200 kilometres per hour, while downbursts can produce gusts of about 150kph.

Statistics show that downbursts are becoming more frequent around the country, which Mr Mercalli said may be connected to global warming.
"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," Mr Mercalli said.
"So we can't say that this is all due to climate change, but we can say that it has an amplifying effect."

The final voyage of the Bayesian
Mr Lynch walked from a United States court in June after spending months in court successfully battling accusations he had cooked books to maximise the sale price of his tech firm Autonomy.
He was facing up to 25 years in jail, but when the charges were dismissed, he was able to go home to the United Kingdom where he pondered his future.
Although he avoided a prison sentence, Mr Lynch still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil case in London that Hewlett Packard mostly won in 2022.
But for now, it seemed, Mr Lynch was celebrating his freedom.
He invited members of his legal team and their families to cruise through a small group of islands near Sicily on the Bayesian, a vessel listed as an asset of his wife.
On August 14, they set sail from Milazzo, a port city in Sicily's north-east.
For six days, they worked their way through the nearby Aeolian Islands before swinging back down to Cefalù, about halfway along Sicily's north coast, according to one of the survivors, Charlotte Golunski — a partner at Mr Lynch's company.
They continued west and eventually anchored about 700 metres off Porticello, where the boat was believed to be hit by the waterspout.
"It was terrible. The boat was hit by really strong wind and shortly after, it went down," Ms Golunski told Italy's ANSA news service .
Did the yacht's 75-metre mast play a role?
The Bayesian shares a name with the mathematical theory on which Mr Lynch based his PhD and later the software that made him his fortune. ( Reuters: Baia Santa Nicolicchia/Fabio La Bianca )
The captain of a boat that had been anchored alongside the Bayesian was worried about colliding with the yacht when gusts intensified.
"We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone," Karsten Borner said.
Captain Borner's crew then rescued some survivors who had managed to clamber into a life raft — including Ms Golunski and her one-year-old daughter.
Four British personnel from the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch have been deployed to investigate what happened to the Bayesian and the factors that led to its sinking.
The yacht was built in 2008 by an Italian shipbuilder and when it was launched, its 75-metre mast was the world's tallest aluminium variety.
That record was only beaten when Jeff Bezos launched his yacht Koru.
But aluminium masts are heavier than carbon and now there are questions about how the mast height and make may have contributed to the sinking.
Captain Borner, who helped rescue the 15 people in the Bayesian life raft, reported seeing that the yacht "went flat on the water and then down".
