Once all guests have embarked, we depart on our spectacular 15-day, Great Northern Expedition. This afternoon you will be introduced to your expedition team and participate in the safety drill. Tonight we invite you to familiarise yourself with your new home away from home, meet some of your fellow travellers, and enjoy the first of many memorable meals in the restaurant. Meals D

Provideniya, Russia (Cross the International Date Line)

After clearance into Russia through the former Soviet military port of Provideniya, we will be treated to a traditional welcome of Vodka, black bread, and sweets before enjoying a cultural dance performance and joining our local guides for a walking tour of the town and its small museum. Meals B,L,D

Cape Dezhnev and Big Diomede Island, Russia

An early morning expedition by Zodiac will see us explore Cape Dezhnev, an Inuit people heritage site. At present, only a small historical village is inhabited and a monument to Russian explorer, Semyon Dezhnev, for whom the cape is named, stands there. Next is Big Diomede, located 28 miles (45 km) off Cape Dezhnev and set right in the middle of the Bering Strait. This Island, once a military base during WWII and into the Cold War, is now unpopulated, housing only a Russian weather station and a base of Russian Border guard troops. Less than one mile east lays the International Date Line between Russia and the United States. Along with learning about the indigenous Inuit heritage, we hope to encounter hauled out walruses. Our next stop is in the Providensky District of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia. The small village of Lorino is known for its Reindeer Herding and the Chukchi people. After a short welcome ceremony, the villages will show of their skill on dog sleds, and will even offer you the chance to enjoy a ride on a sled; a short “cruise” in a local Skin boat, or participate in the regatta! Before returning to the ship try some of the local food that the villagers will prepare. Meals B,L,D

Anastasia and Dezneva Bay

Anastasia is the perfect place for bird watching. Time permitting, our onboard ornithologist will offer a hike ashore to see the variety of shore birds that nest in this area. You may even have the opportunity to photograph the walruses hauled-out along the beach. Our Zodiac fleet is at the ready to explore the region of Dezneva Bay. Some of the animal species we may spot include grey whales, walruses, reindeer, and brown bears. There’s something for our birders as well. Keep on the lookout for the white-fronted bean geese and whooper swans. Meals B,L,D

Mainapilgino Village and Cape Navarin

Taste local caviar and salmon, and glimpse life infused with time old traditions in the small Chukchi fishing village of Mainapilgino, set on a long spit of land along the Bering Sea. Treating us to some real Chukchi hospitality, the village ensemble will perform some of their traditional dances. Birders rejoice, the village is a breeding spot for many species of migratory birds, including Red Knot and critically endangered Spoon billed Sandpiper. Boasting one of the most abundant seabird colonies in northeast Russia, is Cape Navarin, located in the northwestern part of the Bering Sea to the south of Anadyr. Tens of thousands of seabirds can be seen on this cape’s spectacular cliffs. Setting out on Zodiac, we will have the chance to look out for birds such as the Tufted Puffin and Black-legged Kittiwake. Another sight to see is the Walrus haul-out. If we are fortunate, we may also come across the Grey Whale, who occasionally moves through these waters. Meals B,L,D

Located at the mouth of the Anadyr River is Anadyr Bay and Anadyr Port, the administrative centre of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia. A wild time will be had at Anadyr Bay, as we go in search of Brown Bears, and Beluga and Grey Whales. Meals B,L,D

At Anadyr Port, we will mix with the locals at the Russian Orthodox Church, the local museum, and attend a cultural performance. Meals B,L,D

We will travel by Ural truck inland from the small harbor of Egvekinot across the expansive tundra, to the point where the 180 Meridian intersects the Arctic Circle. This is an incredible opportunity to experience firsthand the amazing habitat that dominates so much of Chukotka. Meals B,L,D

Konergino Village and Meechkin Island

Hosting us today is the small village of Konergino, located on the eastern shore of Kresta Bay, south of Egvekinot. Konergino is a reindeer-herding settlement, like other villages in the Iultinsky District of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. The village's name is derived from the Chukchi Kei'i'yergyn, meaning "curved valley." After Konergino, we venture on to Meechkin Island, where a large walrus haul-out can be found. Meals B,L,D

Enmelen Village and Rudera Cape

The small village of Enmelen is populated by a mixture of Chukchi and Yupik people, who support themselves through a combination of reindeer herding, and the hunting of sea mammals. We may count on a warm welcome from villagers, who will treat us to a concert, local food, and Inuit Games. Meals B,L,D

Preobrazheniya Bay and Achen Lagoon

Roam the blossoming tundra with the Silversea experts in Achen Lagoon, and observe the wealth of bird life in Preobrazheniya Bay. Keep a watch for common puffins, horned puffins, and least auklets. A walk to the cliffs will reveal the fascinating panorama of the bay. Meals B,L,D

The next two days are yours to enjoy and experience Denali National Park.  The park offers specialized learning adventures and hiking opportunities.  Enjoy the scenery, history, wildlife, and wildflowers.  Weather permitting, you’ll have views of the breathtaking Alaska Range and Mt McKinley, the highest peak in North America at 20,320’.  This remote destination allows you to enjoy the park away from the business of everyday life.  Access and accommodations in Kantishna are very limited.  You can enjoy exploring with the local naturalist in a small group setting or take a moment to soak up this majestic setting in a private moment all on your own. You’ll have an early departure with your tour bus* this morning (6:45am) for the park entrance. Your journey will take you and fellow travelers 95 miles on the park road with a naturalist guide.  Keep your eyes open for caribou, grizzly bears, Golden Eagles, moose, and more.  Upon arrival, meet up again with your local guide who will assist your boarding for the train.  Ride the rails on the deluxe dome car.  Lunch included on the train before you arrive at the quaint and unique town of Talkeetna, the jumping off point for climbers attempting Mt McKinley.  Your local guide meets you again in Talkeetna and makes a special stop at the locally owned microbrewery, Denali Brewing Company.   Enjoy a visit to the tasting room for an included pint of the local beer or glass of wine prior to boarding your private vehicle and continuing south to Anchorage. 10 places in Chukotka that are worth seeing at least once in your lifetime (PHOTOS)

Chukotka is a place where anyone can become a pioneer. This most remote region of the Russian East has boundless tundra, hills that are covered by snow year-round, hot springs and sea animals.

Almost all trips through this region begin in Anadyr, the administrative center of Chukotka Autonomous Area. This is a small town (with a population of just 15,000); yet, it seems, Anadyr is the most colorful town in Russia.

Chukotka’s weather is harsh: it’s often cloudy, its winds are strong and piercing, the summer is short and cold and there’s almost no vegetation.

To boost people’s mood at least somehow, all houses in the local settlements are painted in different colors; in Anadyr, one can also admire beautiful arctic murals (giant graffiti with a specific northern theme): a polar bear sleeping on the moon, a winking deer and abstract art with walruses.

2. Anadyrsky Liman

The town of Anadyr lies on an estuary bearing the same name – the gulf of the Bering Sea. This is an incredible place! A huge number of seals and beluga whales (white Arctic toothed whales) live in the estuary and gladly pose for tourists passing by.

There’s no reason to fear them – they’re harmless and just as curious!

3. Beringia National Park

Have you ever heard walruses chuffing?

The sound of walruses chuffing can only be heard in the sea. There are truly amazing places in Beringia National Park, which also includes the coast and the islands of the Bering Sea. One of the parts of the park is the favorite gathering spot for walruses – with their large tusks and booming voices. Another part of the park is a hotspot for playful orcas, showing their tails to human travelers. Yet another part features seals and whales.

The Bering Sea also has one of the longest spits in the world – called Meechkyn – which is 60 kilometers long. The sand here is like that of the warm seas, claims Alexander Endaltsev, a sea tour guide. “This is the only place between Anadyr and Egvekinot where you can enter the bay and hide from the wind.”

Right now, with regional support, the spit is seeing the construction of a modern tourist center, from which people will be able to watch walruses and whales.

4. Cape Dezhnev

At the edge of the continent.

The edge of the world is just as you have always imagined it: a high rocky cliff, plunging steeply into the icy sea. Cape Dezhnev is the easternmost mainland point of Russia and of the entire Eurasia.

This is where you can find a lighthouse-monument to cossack Semyon Dezhnev, whose expedition was the first to reach the edge of the continent in 1648.

In clear weather, one can see the Diomede Islands from here through the Bering Strait; between them lies the border between Russia and the U.S.

5. The deserted village of Naukan

What a scale!

On Cape Dezhnev, you can spot the old Naukan Eskimo settlement, which held the honor of being the easternmost settlement until the middle of the previous century (now this title belongs to the village of Uelen , 22 kilometers to the West.

Prior to its resettlement in 1958 (the village happened to be too close to the U.S. border), it had a population of about 400 people; now only stone ruins remain of their homes.

But the most impressive feature of this place are the giant whale jaws, dug into the ground, on which boats were hung in the past. These lands are considered sacred; you can’t swear there or even talk loudly.

6. The 180th meridian

The meridian that separates “yesterday” from “today” (and also the Eastern Hemisphere from the Western Hemisphere) passes through land only in the Antarctic and on the Chukotka Peninsula. The official date line is shifted towards the sea border between Russia and the U.S., in between the Diomede Islands , but, geographically, it lies 60 kilometers away from the village of Egvekinot.

A concrete monument, ‘The Symbol of the Sun’, installed at the intersection of the Arctic Circle and the 180th meridian, is a small copy of the Sun. “It’s 400 million times smaller than the real star – just 3.48 meters in diameter,” Ida Taube , the photographer and author of the project, notes.

“Today” lies on the hill behind the monument, and “yesterday” is right in front of it. How can you resist saying hello from “the future”... or the "past"?

7. The Arctic Circle Arch

‘The Arch of the Arctic Circle’ was installed by locals in 1981, 28 kilometers away from Egvekinot. This colossal construction made of metal bars hangs over the route leading to the abandoned village of Iultin.

Several years ago, Russian geographers recalculated the coordinates and found out that the real crossing point of the Arctic Circle lies several kilometers away from the arch by this route, at the foot of a hill. However, it was impossible to move the arch there; instead, a memorial pillar was installed.

8. Egvekinot village

The village Egvekinot, 600 kilometers away from Anadyr, is dubbed ‘Chukotka’s Switzerland’ by the locals. This settlement (with a population of slightly over 3,000 people) is situated in a calm bay, encircled by a ring of hills.

The landscape is truly reminiscent of that of the Alps, only with permafrost and a harsh climate: the average annual temperature here sits at minus 5 degrees Celsius.

But, you can find a ski slope and decent cafes. It is also where you can experience the metamorphoses of space: Egvekinot lies several dozens of kilometers to the East from the 180th meridian; hence, geographically, you can step into the Western Hemisphere without crossing the Pacific Ocean.

9. The national village of Lorino

Lorino is the largest village in Chukotka, where about 90% of the inhabitants (out of 1,500) are indigenous sea hunters.

They live in regular apartment blocks, they watch satellite TV, their kids attend school like anyone else, but they also engage in the traditional hunt.

The spoils of the hunt are then shared among the villagers. Today, the hunters sail the sea on modern boats, but, every summer, they hold self-made kayak sailing competitions and celebrate the Beringia folk festival.

10. The Lorino hot springs

Hot springs in permafrost – isn’t that a wonder? There are about 10 places like this in Chukotka, but the most famous and accessible one lies within 15 kilometers from Lorino village. Baths had been installed at the Lorino hot springs back in the middle of the previous century, but then radon was found in the water.

The water is really hot.

Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs as an intermediate step in the decay chains of uranium and has a range of potent healing properties. But, its radioactivity poses a threat for children and young people, so it’s most often used as an anti-aging remedy for the elderly, particularly in the treatment of the musculoskeletal system. The water temperature in the springs is about 40 degrees Celsius, sometimes reaching 60 degrees. You can enjoy this hot spring bath for no more than 15 minutes.
