Parker 26 SH Review

Strength, simplicity and seaworthiness are the channel markers of Parker Boats’ success, and the 26 SH (sport hybrid) is the latest model to run that course. The boatbuilder’s legacy goes all the way back to the late 1960s, and the new 26-footer has everything the vintage Parker center-consoles had to offer and more.

In boating, we often talk performance, but Parker focuses on seaworthiness, and performance is a part of it. A good, stable ride comes from a solid, true hull with crisp lines, a well-defined keel and chines, and a deadrise to match the application. The construction must be solid and substantial, and Parker accomplishes that with a proven, lifetime-guaranteed hull with fully encapsulated, rot-proof, treated-wood stringer system that gives the boat its heft and wave-taming durability.

Designed to fish anywhere from shallow bays to offshore waters, the 26 SH boasts a 15-degree deadrise at the transom to balance draft, stability and ride. Aided by a T-H Marine Atlas hydraulic jack plate, standard issue on the Parker, the boat’s hole shot proved more than adequate during our test, and we went from zero to 30 mph in under 11 seconds. At wide-open throttle, with a modest crew and 65 gallons of gas, the Parker clocked 46 mph, and it achieved its best fuel economy at 5,000 rpm, making 43.9 mph and yielding 2.2 miles per gallon.

At speed, the stout hull easily cleaves the waves and wakes. At rest, it slides smoothly over them. The Parker has a higher bow than most bay-boat models, but its heavy build resists movement from a stiff breeze. It’s 97-gallon fuel capacity gives the boat a 190-mile range (leaving 10 percent of the fuel in reserve), more than enough for enjoying a full day of inshore or nearshore fishing, or even a combination of both. For getting the crew off the flats quickly, before the tide falls past the comfort level, the Parker 26 SH boasts a prompt 5.7 second hole shot to plane.

A pair of bucket seats at the helm of the 26-footer, ideally positioned to drive while standing or seated, made the ride comfortable. The fiberglass hardtop structure is designed with steps to the top of the dash, in case the owner wants an upper helm station. The hardtop on the test boat was color-matched to the boat, and the tempered windshield keeps character with Parker’s strength and durability focus.

The nearly 10-foot beam gives the boat stability while on the move and at rest, and allows wide walkways from bow to stern. Extra-wide gunwales make it practical for nimbler anglers to follow fish fore and aft without stepping down into the cockpit. All surfaces were covered with a high-density foam surf mat to minimize foot and back fatigue, and dampen any untimely thuds accidentally caused by falling gear or the crew that could otherwise spook fish in shallow water. The high bow and freeboard offer added safety in open water, and the fore and aft decks provide ample room for casting.

Livewells are generous and equipped with powerful pumps. Located to port and starboard on the transom platform, each has a full-width lid and a smaller acrylic hatch in the center for dipping into the bait. Both livewells are oval-shaped, with a pair of impressions to securely hold 5-gallon buckets inside. There’s a cooler in the front step that can be plumbed to serve as an extra livewell.

We found plenty of tackle storage in the back of the leaning post and gunwales, where lockers held at least six utility boxes. The boat’s immense rod lockers were designed to let air flow from port to starboard through the central storage locker. Dividers could be easily removed, opening the rod lockers to the central storage locker.

Passenger comfort is not forgotten in this hardcore fishing boat. A forward seat accommodates two comfortably, and the foredeck is equipped with removable cushions for sunning. Seat backrests turn the forward deck into a pair of reclining lounges, ideal for sandbar loafing. There’s a lockable head compartment in the console, and a double couch—centered into the swim platform, between the livewells—provides aft seating. Accessing the plumbing in the bilge only requires lifting the couch seat bottom. An even larger access hatch behind the couch offers additional access.

A Ritchie compass, Fusion stereo, Lenco trim tabs, hydraulic steering, coaming bolsters, slide-out cooler, protective reel pads and retractable boarding ladder are also among the boat’s standard features, and the list of optional gear and amenities to choose from is quite extensive.

Strength, simplicity and seaworthiness combined with hardcore fishability, a soft ride, and plenty of passenger comforts and conveniences make the Parker 26 SH an excellent choice for serious anglers and their families.

Parker Yachts

G. W. Parker & Son, established in the late 1880’s and originally founded by Bill Parker’s grandfather, were general builders and joiners, the family having been for several generations Master Mariner Builders and Woodworkers. It carried on trading as builders until the 1950’s, when they again introduced boat building into what was at the time still a small family business. The company commenced with the then new international ‘505’ racing dinghy. Initially, these were cold moulded though before long they had changed to GRP construction and soon achieved their first international racing successes. Over the years, Parker built ‘505’s have amassed an enviable list of 18 world championships as well as numerous national and European championships. For a number of years, the sole Parker boat was the ‘505’, for which they had a very healthy UK and export market. However, in 1972 Parker’s were appointed sole UK builders for the new Olympic class, the international ‘470’ racing dinghy. This addition enabled them to expand their production facilities, they moved to their present site at Kirton and increased their staff. Over the years Parker’s have also built, albeit in limited numbers, various yachts and dinghies such as the ‘Flying Dutchman’, ‘Tempest’ and the ‘Sprinta Sport’. In 1980, Parker’s bought the building rights for the ‘lark’ from John Baker, when John wanted to concentrate on the Seal range of yachts. Bill Parker having originally met both John and Pat back in 1969, during a trade mission to the USA promoting their respective dinghies, the ‘505’ and the ‘Lark’. It was, perhaps, no surprise that in 1981, when for a complete change John and Pat were thinking of moving out of the boat building business into fruit growing, they sold the building rights of the Super Seal to Parker’s. For the next ten years, the Super Seal remained in continuous production before being modified and marketed as the Parker 27. Throughout the time, Bill Parker sailed the boat regularly himself and developed a high respect for this fine, lifting-keel, high performance yacht. So much so, that he became convinced the lifting-keel concept had an important niche in the market. Parker’s therefore followed up the 27 in 1986 with the Parker 21 (derived form the MiniSeal), and in 1987 with the Parker 31 (a design originally based on the Passage Maker, but much modified). In 1990 the entirely new Parker 275 was introduced to replace the 27, and in 1993 the company launched the Parker 325, their in-house design to supercede the Parker 31 and bring their range right up to date. All these yachts have lifting keels except for a few specially ordered 28s, Super Seals and MiniSeals. The present yachts are marketed as Parker Yachts to benefit from the Parker world-wide quality image. They do however still carry the Seal insignia, and whilst the original association of Seal owners now numbers many owners of Parker built yachts, it continues to be named The Seal Sailing Association. 2022 Parker 2200 CC

A glance at Parker’s 2200 CC reveals the strength, simplicity and seaworthiness of this boat’s Carolina roots. We stepped aboard and discovered robust functionality borne of a builder with big-water experience.

Interior and Accessories

Raised bow compartments to port and starboard provide seating and dry storage upfront. Both are insulated to double as fish boxes. A pedestal table fills the gap in between to form a raised casting deck, and it also rises to turn the bow into social seating.

The 36-inch-wide console has a roomy head compartment inside, and seating for two in the front features a backrest and a cooler designed to also serve as a livewell. The business side offers sufficient real estate for all must-have electronics, including a pair of 10-inch multifunction displays. Should you run out of mounting space, the optional hardtop package includes an overhead electronics box.

An aluminum leaning post affords standard helm seating for the skipper and a companion, but Parker offers an upgraded version featuring flip-up bolsters and a fiberglass module that incorporates tackle storage to port, plus a larger 33-gallon livewell and a pair of flush-mount rod holders in back. Removable transom seats add comfort or can be stowed to increase space. 

Rod storage consists of four flush-mount rod holders on the covering boards, two more on the optional fiberglass leaning post, and a four-rod rocket launcher as part of the optional hardtop package. Hiding behind a pair of removable jump seats, transom doors on opposite aft corners provide direct access to twin swim platforms to port and starboard, and also make it easier to bring aboard trophy fish.

The single Yamaha F250 proved an excellent match for the 2200 CC, which displayed nimble responsiveness during a number of maneuvers, and exhibited the desired power and quickness on the straightaways, rushing from zero to 30 mph in 9.4 seconds, and flirting with 49 mph at wide-open throttle. At 3,500 rpm, the Parker achieved its best fuel efficiency, running at 28 mph while burning a scant 9.3 gph.

Low Points 

• Undergunwale racks for rods are not available. 
• Dry storage/fish-box capacity is somewhat limited.
• Less dedicated tackle storage than other boats in this size class.

Toughest Competitor

The Sailfish 220 CC ($86,950 powered by a Yamaha F200) is rated for less power, carries more fuel and rides a deeper V—a 22- to 24-degree variable deadrise hull form, which Sailfish calls VDS.
