What are the Cheapest Yacht Clubs?

The cheapest yacht clubs charge just under $1,000 per year for membership. While this does give you access to different types of experiences, you may be disappointed by the overall amenities.

Some yacht clubs are known for their extravagant country club styles that help you to embrace a particular lifestyle. They include Olympic-sized swimming pools, state-of-the-art tennis courts, and fine dining.

Everything has a beautiful waterfront view. It can feel like you are in the middle of an idyllic paradise without ever even having to leave the shore. If this is what you can gain from the most expensive yacht clubs, you should set your expectations much lower for the cheaper yacht clubs.

The cheaper yacht clubs lack the community aspect of these exclusive options. They feature dry slips and the occasional party, but not much more.

Some of them may have the feel of a county park with some picnic benches, outdoor grills, and a moderately sized swimming pool. Expect a much more casual atmosphere when you choose to go with a cheaper yacht club.

It is even possible that they are simply “paper yacht clubs” that do not even maintain a physical building of their own.

How Much Do the Most Expensive Yacht Clubs Cost to Join?

The most expensive yacht clubs can vary a great deal in price. Most of them will cost between $3,000 and $4,000 per year. However, you can certainly find more exclusive clubs that will cost above and beyond this.

Keep in mind that these more expensive clubs generally are not open to the public. They are offered by invitation only and you must have a member sponsor you to be considered for entrance.

When you are paying for a more expensive yacht club, you should make sure that you are really going to get your money’s worth. These expensive clubs promote a certain type of elegant lifestyle.

Make sure that you are planning to take advantage of all the amenities available from one of these clubs before you sink too much money into the membership fees. The social aspect of these expensive yacht clubs is extremely important.

If you plan to simply rent a boat from time to time, you might be able to go with a cheaper yacht club.

What Is Generally Included in the Membership Fee for Yacht Clubs?

Have you been wondering why you should join a yacht club? Many potential members want to know what they can expect from their membership fees before they commit to a year-long contract. There are many advantages to signing up for a membership with a well-known yacht club.

Amenities and Activities

First and foremost, you get access to activities and cruises planned by board members. These might be various sailing activities, dinners, get-togethers, tennis matches, or other events that take up a lazy Sunday afternoon.

You also gain access to any amenities that surround the yacht club’s marina. For many programs, this means a fitness center, pool, and tennis courts. Several locations also offer fine dining, meeting rooms, and more.

It is like a private oasis where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the regular world. Time moves slowly when you’re enjoying the amenities here.

Many yacht clubs have programs that introduce children (and adults!) to sailing. Take classes to learn more about improving your technique, sailing safety, and other important aspects of life on the open water.

Access to the Fleet

The main reason why most people join yacht clubs is to be able to rent out boats instead of purchasing their own. Joining a yacht club may give you access to an entire fleet of yachts that can be reserved for a day or weeks at a time. Some yacht clubs allow you to rent boats for up to ten days at a time.

Others do not allow you to rent out ships. They are primarily geared toward individuals who already own a yacht or will own a yacht in the future. Make sure you know the difference in advance.

tampa bay yacht club membership cost

Are There any Additional Costs Besides the Membership Fees?

Unfortunately, the membership fees are not the only cost associated with joining a yacht club. Most of the clubs in the United States also have a one-time initial fee that tends to cost thousands of dollars. Many will range from $1,500 to $5,000 depending on the location and the exclusivity of the yacht club.

This one-time fee should be the only additional money you pay except for fuel. Most yacht clubs do not cover the cost of the fuel used in the ship during your rental if renting is an option. Be prepared for what this could cost you.

If you cause damage to the ship, you can also expect some out-of-pocket costs. Insurance should cover the damage, but you will likely be asked to cover the cost of the deductible.

Be sure to inquire about how much you may be on the hook for before you sign up for any particular yacht club. Accidents can happen, even to the most experienced sailors. Make sure that you can afford the mishap in advance.

Is a Yacht Club Membership Right for You?

Understanding what the real cost of a yacht club membership is can be the first step toward determining if this is right for you. Many people love the luxuries available through the more expensive yacht clubs, but they may not be able to afford it. Consider what is most important in a club to you before deciding to sign on the dotted line for an annual membership.

How much does it cost to join the Tampa Bay Yacht Club?

Answered by Percy Deschamp

As a professional golfer, I don’t have personal experience with joining the Tampa Bay Yacht Club. However, I can provide information on the cost based on available resources.

To join the Tampa Bay Yacht Club, there is an initiation fee of $35,000 for a voting membership. This fee is a one-time payment made upon joining the club. It is important to note that this fee may be subject to change, so it’s always best to confirm with the club directly.

In addition to the initiation fee, there are annual dues that members are required to pay. For the Tampa Bay Yacht Club, the current annual dues amount to $6,081. These dues contribute to the operating costs of the club, including maintenance, staff salaries, and other expenses.

It’s worth mentioning that the Tampa Bay Yacht Club is organized as a 501(c)(7) not-for-profit corporation. This means that any profits generated by the club are reinvested into the organization rather than distributed to shareholders or owners.

As for membership availability, the Tampa Bay Yacht Club has a 2-year waiting list. This means that after submitting an application and paying the initiation fee, prospective members may have to wait for approximately 2 years before gaining full membership privileges.

Joining the Tampa Bay Yacht Club entails a significant financial commitment, with an initiation fee of $35,000 and annual dues of $6,081. The club’s not-for-profit status ensures that any funds generated are reinvested into the organization for the benefit of its members.

This Members Only Yacht Club must be doing something right, I'm told the waiting list to join is 2 years long. The prime rib was the best I've had in Florida. I asked for medium rare and the meat was pink all the way through. Steak was thick and juicy. Forgot to take a picture. Service was impeccable.

Photo of Brittany P.

Service was a 10/10. They were very professional and accommodating. The staff were attentive and helpful. The drinks were excellent. The food was fresh and light. So many areas to relax and enjoy yourself. A great experience.

Photo of Jim B.

Total garbage. Rude wait staff and every patron tries to sell me insurance. How unprofessional.

Photo of Kelly K.

After being a member of years and having a large event there last year I have really rather enjoyed being a part of this particular Country Club. Even thought I believe to be one of the youngest members the other patrons have always been warm and excellent to introduce and converse with. The facilities include a gym, pool, horse stables, tennis, restaurant and optional dining areas for different dress codes. The gym is limited in their equipment but it seems to be doing the job. Treadmills and free weights and the occasional classes are always available. The staff at the gym are beyond wonderful. The tennis courts surrounding the inside gym are always full of matches and since I live across the street I can hear the tennis balls from sun up to sun down. The pool area is beautifully maintained and offers a snacks and adult beverages at the window of the main building. I must admit, the pool is where you'll find me mostly. Can't beat a heated pool this size. The restaurant is immaculate and always bustling. The food needs a little tending too, it always seems to have "Yacht Club Sauce," on everything so dubbed by what we call it. It all starts tasting the same but the specials are usually something you can't go wrong with. I highly recommend joining. At the moment they are offering fee options over a year or so that appeal to a younger audience on a tighter budget instead of an all at once fee.

Was a nice relaxing atmosphere. Food was great too!

Been to many weddings and events here over the years. (My own wedding reception was here 20 years ago!) beautiful venue for special events and the food is always delicious. It is a private club so you have to know a member to go here or hold an event here. Great service as well!

Reach those fishing grounds and other destinations. Sovereign Boat Club lets you go farther, beyond the protected water restrictions of most boat clubs. Go all day. You and your guests will love the benefits of a premium boat. Joysticks for easy docking, fore and aft awnings for shade and UV protection, and an electric-flush head in a large compartment so everyone can be comfortable during a long day on the water.

Not A Mass-Market Boat Club

Mass-market boat clubs are a wonderful means of shared access for beginners. However, the Sovereign Boat Club is up-market and is intended for people who want to enjoy the water on a premium boat that is ready and able to go out to sea. All SBC boats are among the best boats in their class from respected brands known for quality construction. SBC boats are twin-engine powered, have joysticks for easy docking, electric-flush heads so the boat is family-friendly, and have state-of-the-art chartplotters and fishfinders. All or our boats are equipped with VHF radios for safety.

Premium Boats

Better Than A Used Boat

Many boaters looking for an affordable boat, buy a used boat, hoping to enjoy the boating lifestyle for less money. But used boats often come with baggage. A worn-out engine, gremlins in the electrical system, rotting hoses and other unseen problems. Typically, they don’t have the latest electronics, and modern equipment, rarely a joystick, or a working head and almost never a gyro stabilizer. There’s nothing like a new boat!

Serving A Need In the Industry

“The Club’s program is an incredible option for our family. It’s like owning our own boat, but way easier. The cost is similar to other boating programs, but what you get is a whole other level. If you compare their costs versus owning a boat of this caliber, there’s no contest.” Sovereign Boat Club Member Tom S
“I’ve been a member of a mass-market boat club for over ten years. It was nice for a period of time, but their vessels were mediocre and not suited for my needs. It was also not convenient to wait 1 month out, at minimum, for a boat on the weekend. The Club’s Pursuit DC266 is a premium boat and I can always use the boat when I want it.” Sovereign Boat Club Member Tim T

Davis Islands Yacht Club shatters stereotypes

  • TOM SCHERBERGER

It's Thursday evening at the Davis Islands Yacht Club, and the cars are lined up at the gate, where a sign warns visitors they are entering private property.

The cars snake past the little speck, also known as Beer Can Beach, and reach almost to the airport.

There's not a free patch of grass in sight _ and not many people, either.

They're all out there on the water, dozens of them in small boats with sails unfurled, the canvas stiff in the wind.

Bicyclists crane their necks toward the water, and cars park along the grass on the other side of the yacht basin to watch the weekly regatta that has been a fixture on the Tampa horizon for more than 20 years.

After the race, sailors and their fans may head over to the club for some shrimp and a little beer and to watch the sky turn red.

Thursdays are public days at this private club and a pleasant diversion on a muggy summer night. It is a quiet little South Tampa tradition that has held fast even as the city has changed.

Anyone can show up with their boat and join the regatta and act like they own the place.

After all, they do in a way.

The public owns this choice spot overlooking Hillsborough Bay at the southeastern tip of Davis Islands. The city has leased the land to the 500-member club for nearly 40 years.

When it was time to renew the lease last year, the city took pains to ensure that it doesn't get embarrassed by the kinds of issues that crop up about private clubs these days.

But the Davis Islands Yacht Club was politically correct before the term was invented.

"We're completely diverse," says Bob Gilbertson, executive director of the YMCA and a former commodore of the yacht club.

The club is so casual it almost cultivates an air of reverse snobbery. "We might look down our noses at the knife-and-fork club members," Gilbertson says. "It's not a club made up of a lot of super-expensive boats and blue blazers and white duck pants. It's just not that kind of club."

Can you imagine the members of more exclusive clubs, such as the Tampa or St. Petersburg yacht clubs, getting together every few months for cleanup and repairs? The mind reels.

But the Davis Islands club does just that, partly to keep costs down. For a place that calls itself a yacht club, the dues are pretty low _ $500 to join, plus $40 a month. That's about what a family would pay to join Gilbertson's Y.

"It's affordable, and that's another part of what we wanted to do," Gilbertson explains. "It allows access to people who want to sail. If you want to sail and you're not making a lot of money, then this is a club where you can do that."

Calling it a yacht club is almost a misnomer because so many of the members sail one-person boats. But there are plenty of other boats that might qualify for the grandiose title of yacht.

Besides, as a friend points out, even a little boat can be a yacht if you pour enough money into it.

One of the club's programs gave it a lot of points with the city. About 30 kids from the city's public housing projects are brought over each summer to learn the ways of sailing. Gilbertson said it's so successful the club hopes to continue it year round.

With a new 30-year lease, the club hopes to expand. By next summer the club plans to have added 40 boat slips to the 100 it already has. That project depends on the club getting the myriad government permits needed for marinas these days, Gilbertson says.

Not everyone who belongs to the club even sails. Some people just like the atmosphere, the pool, the view, the people. Blacks, whites, men, women, young and old, rich and not so rich _ it's not a clubby atmosphere.

"That's the kind of club we want to be members of," Gilbertson says. "The only discriminating factor is we want people to sail."
