Murdoch's superyacht 'Sarissa' arrives

Dutch carbon-fibre performance sloop with cockpit swimming pool.

Lachlan and Sarah Murdoch’s stunning new carbon-fibre superyacht Sarissa has arrived in Sydney in time for summer. Designed by Bill Tripp and built by Dutch yard Vitters, the cutting-edge yacht was two years in the making and is the largest carbon-fibre sloop built to date in the Netherlands.

Vitters Shipyard's website describes  Sarissa as a spectacular 42.6 m carbon globetrotter and performance sloop with a fully modern hull shape, sail plan, and foils.

Hydraulic sailing and deck systems are said to provide improved reaction speed, load and stiffness to safely facilitate the sailing performance this modern and technical yacht was designed for.

Other custom technical features are an in-house developed hydraulic steering system with rudder feedback, as well as a unique system of back stays and running stays to operate both her cruising and racing sail configurations. The yacht has a lifting keel.

The mainsheet has been placed on an arch spanning the cockpit to keep the deck clear, while the aft cockpit can be transformed into a swimming pool for the kids.

Sarissa's design was guided by close client input and involvement, says Vitters, adding that the yacht will be used to sail all over the world with the family in tow and will take part in the established superyacht regattas.

The layout and deck plan emphasise a clean and modern look, while the family friendly layout below decks boasts a full-beam after stateroom, three guests cabins and three crew cabins.

The stunning interior is by Rhoades Young Design Ltd using a combination of limed oak, dark Italian walnut, Indian rosewood, carbon, dark leather and brushed stainless steel.

Finished in swordfish blue Alexseal paint, with a Ribling 555 tender in the 'garage', the 163 tonne Sarissa has a 56m carbon mast and will be hard to miss moored at Wooloomooloo in Sydney’s CBD.

Meantime, father Rupert reportedly listed his 184ft yacht Rosehearty , built by Perini Navi in Italy in 2006, for sale in September this year for $29.7 million. This followed his divorce from wife Wendi Deng.

Royal Huisman

SARISSA: SAILING YACHT OF THE YEAR

She also became the winner of “Best Sailing Yacht of 40m and above”. Congratulations to her owner and of course an honor for her design and build team with this important recognition for her 6th and 7th award this year.

Sarissa represents the next chapter in the owners’ love of sailing and passion for family adventures and exploration. Their first 43m / 140ft Sarissa opened their eyes to what else was possible. In 2012 the owners started dreaming about today’s  Sarissa, which was launched in 2023 has become 17 metres / 55 feet longer. The challenge was to envision a yacht that was a step up from one they already loved. The owners spent many years developing her, and it is not by accident that the shipyard and designers achieved spectacular results.

From the report by the jury: “Three sailing yachts, including one inventive catamaran and two monohulls built by Royal Huisman [Nilaya and Sarissa], were named nominees in this category. […] Both Royal Huisman builds were deemed ‘superb boats’ by the judges – but Sarissa stood out for being ‘more exciting’ and was described by the judges as an ‘astonishing boat’.

Naval architect Malcolm McKeon was contacted to develop a performance sloop for experienced owners who were looking for a successor to their previous yacht by the same name. Sarissa had to be fast and fun to sail, and manual steering was a must so the power could be felt when manning the helm. Sarissa’s 76-metre-tall modulus carbon mast features aero carbon rigging and flies the largest square-top sail in the world.

With a focus on weight savings and corrosion prevention, carbon fibre was used for the superstructure, hull doors, deck furniture, hatches, mainsheet arch, sail storage drums, steering consoles and captive winches. All the stanchions are titanium and lifelines are lightweight Dyneema. A multi-faceted approach to eco-friendly cruising includes wind-driven propulsion, hydro generators, waste heat recovery and wastewater treatment. Most notably, she has an advanced […] propulsion system, and Royal Huisman installed the first forward-facing retractable electric azipod propulsion for redundancy, efficiency and improved performance under sail. Inside is a chic, flowing interior by Liaigre. Each cabin is unique, corridors gently curve, stairs are set off the centreline, and the hull shape is visible so you truly feel you’re on a sailing boat. As one of the judges said, “Guillaume Rolland from Liaigre is not just a designer, but also a sailor thus understanding life on board of sailboats.”

The judges’ comments about why Sarissa is the Sailing Yacht of the Year winner: “…it was Sarissa, with her groundbreaking propulsion system, state-of-the-art sails and rig and exquisite interiors by Liaigre, that almost unanimously won out among the judges for the honour of Sailing Yacht of the Year. The high-performance sloop represents many firsts for her builder and the sailing superyacht fleet writ large.  All […] innovation, along with her clean lines, holistic design, organically flowing interior and creative layout with an abundance of exterior living spaces not usually found on a sailing boat made Sarissa a clear choice for Sailing Yacht of the Year.”

Earlier this year Sarissa was rewarded with five major awards at Boat International’s Design & Innovation Awards. She was the winner of various sailing Yachts categories (Best Exterior Design, Best Interior Design, Best Naval Architecture) as well as the Eco and Innovation of the Year Award. It is not easy to be objective about the quality of your own work. Organisations such as the World Superyacht Awards and their expert, independent juries help to provide an unbiased measure of achievement. Jan Timmerman, CEO of Royal Huisman: “On behalf of our team I would like to say that we are very happy and honoured with these awards. At the same time and although we have received more than a fair share of such recognition, we are not planning to lean back following this success: we will never forget that a shipyard is only as good as its next boat.” Overview of all awards in recent years:  link

Sarissa wins Sailing Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards 2024

The 59.7-metre Royal Huisman sailing yacht Sarissa has been crowned Sailing Yacht of the Year at the 2024 edition of the World Superyacht Awards .

Like all the winners at the World Superyacht Awards , the prestigious title was chosen by an independent panel of judges and announced at the end of the awards ceremony, along with Motor Yacht of the Year winner, 66-metre Alchemy .

Sarissa was noted for her high-performance capabilities and environmental sensitivity. The 33.5-metre Baltic Yachts Zemi was vying for the title and was similarly commended for her eco credentials and telescopic lifting keel. But ultimately, Sarissa ’s cutting-edge propulsion system and state-of-the-art sails and rig clinched the deal for the judges.

The sloop represents many firsts for her builder and the sailing sector as a whole. She has a square-top mainsail that is the largest square-top sail in the world, the largest 3Di RAW sail to the highest spec ever built by North Sails and it’s the first time this type of carbon sail has been used for in-boom furling.  All of this innovation, along with her clean lines, holistic design, organically flowing interior and creative layout with an abundance of exterior living spaces not usually found on a sailing boat, made Sarissa a worthy winner of Sailing Yacht of the Year.

Nominations for the World Superyacht Awards 2025 are now open. For more information, please contact the events team .

Lachlan Murdoch's $30 million superyacht has arrived in Australia for the first time as he and the family drop anchor in Sydney and await the completion of their far pricier cruiser.

The News Corp co-chairman bought the classic fixer-upper earlier this year but has only just docked the vessel in Australian waters, keeping it at Rozelle Bay in the city, where Mr Murdoch, his wife Sarah and three children now live.

He bought the 42-metre Feadship yacht for the huge sum while he waits for his secretive latest purchase to be built, a 59.7m Royal Huisman sloop, believed to be worth £100million (A$175million).

The 1954 refurbished motor yacht, Istros, has accomodation for nine guests in five different cabins.

The boat also features crew quarters for up to ten staff.

On deck, the boat boasts a sofa and deck chairs, while further along the vessel is a dining table that caters to alfresco eating.

The sloop has been entirely remodelled, including a full overhaul of its interior, upgrades to the external fittings and gutting of the engine room.

It was little more than a rusting hulk when it was rescued from a Maltese port in 2015, before it was salvaged and rebuilt.

Dutch shipyard De Vries Lentsch delivered the yacht in the 1950s but Van Geest design made the interior upgrades in 'family oriented, sunny Scandinavian style'.

However, it was not all smooth sailing with financial difficulties stopping progress on the yacht until 2018.

The upgrades were then completed by Feadship in 2020.

Istros has won awards for its remodelling and rebuilding with many leasing the ship while she was on the charter market.

That was until Mr Murdoch snapped her up in 2021.

The boat joins an extensive Murdoch flotilla including the Sarissa, which they paid $30million for, but is now believed to be available for charter.

Lachlan Murdoch is an enthusiastic sailor, having raced his 24-metre sail yacht Swan 82, Ipixuna, at Hamilton Island in early 2021.

He also entered the Sydney to Hobart back in 1997.

Last year, the couple paid $38 million for a boat shed at Point Piper after relocating to Sydney to live at their Bellevue Hill compound, Le Manoir.

It was believed they would host a delayed 90th birthday celebration for family mogul Rupert Murdoch this year, however the News Corp chairman and CEO has now turned 91.

Lachlan and Sarah Murdoch now own properties in Sydney, Los Angeles and Colorado, as well as a $90 million Gulfstream G650 private jet.

Lachlan uses the private jet to regularly fly between the US and Australia for work.

The Murdochs have three children - sons Kalan Alexander, 17, Aidan Patrick, 15, and daughter Aerin Elisabeth, 11 - who all attend private schools across Sydney.

Previous reports have suggested it's not always been smooth sailing for the family of five.

Last year, sources claimed the family moved to Australia when the US political climate shifted after Joe Biden was elected the US president.

The pro-Republican family's children apparently experienced 'a rough' time, Nine newspapers reported.

Real-life ‘Succession’ as Lachlan Murdoch solidifies perch atop Fox and News Corp.

Rupert Murdoch and his son, Lachlan Murdoch, in 2021.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Lachlan Murdoch has long shared his famous father’s enthusiasm for right-leaning politics and the news business, including the family’s vast portfolio of newspapers — even as the industry was ravaged by internet search engines and shunned by investors.

But he also has a sentimental streak.

When Rupert Murdoch decided to unload much of the entertainment assets he had spent decades building, investment bankers advised the clan of ruthlessly bottom line-focused media moguls to include the real estate — the company’s legendary movie studio lot in Century City — as part of the deal.

Lachlan Murdoch said no. He felt the lot was the beating heart of the company on the West Coast, one steeped in Hollywood history. Besides, he sensed the Century City land would only grow in value, a belief that has proved true (it’s worth billions).

Now, the 52-year-old executive is firmly presiding over the empire his father built — encompassing the most influential conservative media institutions in America — from an office suite on the L.A. studio lot.

Fox Corp. and News Corp. on Thursday announced Rupert Murdoch was stepping down from his executive role at the two media companies and that Lachlan would succeed him atop the two companies. The changes take effect in November.

Lachlan Murdoch becomes the sole chairman of News Corp., the publishing company that owns the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post, and executive chairman of Fox, the television arm that includes Fox News, Fox Sports and the Fox broadcast network. Because Lachlan Murdoch has been at the helm as Fox’s chief executive since March 2019, and because he is exceedingly close to his father, analysts expect the son’s strategy to largely reflect the father’s.

“Lachlan is probably the most aligned with his father in terms of politics and in terms of his vision of the business,” Paul Verna, principal analyst at Insider Intelligence, said. “There’s not a lot of daylight between the two men.”

Lachlan Murdoch has previously said the political bent of Fox News, which has made the network a lightning rod, will remain.

Fox documents from late 2020 and early 2021, revealed in the course of high-profile and devastating litigation, underscored the tight collaboration between the two Murdochs. The pair were involved in overseeing Fox News’ coverage of President Trump and his false statements that the 2020 election was stolen from him, which proved costly for the company. In April, Fox agreed to pay $787 million to Dominion Voting Systems to avoid a trial over defamation claims.

Documents in the case showed how the Murdochs and Fox News Media Chief Executive Suzanne Scott in November 2020 discussed ways to avoid further alienating viewers after Fox News made the early and accurate call that Arizona had tipped to then-candidate Joe Biden.

The situation “needs constant rebuilding without any missteps,” Lachlan Murdoch wrote, according to the internal documents, referring to the company’s effort to regain trust among Fox News fans.

Murdoch has survived scandal after scandal. Will Dominion-Fox News lawsuit be different?

The media mogul acknowledged that he could have stopped the parade of conspiracy theorists on Fox News from amplifying false claims by former President Trump and his surrogates that the election in 2020 was stolen.

March 4, 2023

But there are differences between the pair, beyond the generational gap.

In fact, for a while, Lachlan Murdoch appeared uninterested in working with his father — at a time when his younger brother James dived into his corporate role with relish. Back then, it looked like James was in line for the throne.

Rupert Murdoch has long made clear that one of his two sons would ultimately succeed him. Beyond wanting to keep his business in the family, the elder mogul is known among friends for his lack of sentimentality, buying and discarding properties that he once coveted, including the Hollywood movie studio known for “Avatar” and “Titanic,” DirecTV and the European satellite television service Sky.

When he was CEO, he worked in an expansive office on the fifth floor of a modern office building on the lot.

In contrast, Lachlan prefers the ground-floor office of the Depression-era Art Deco structure, Building 88 on Fox’s Avenue of the Palms, where movie pioneer Darryl F. Zanuck once ran the show. Inside his office, a bank of TV screens flicker with Fox News and other channels. Editions of the company’s newspapers are proudly and neatly displayed nearby.

lachlan murdoch new yacht sarissa

Lachlan Murdoch is fulfilling the career trajectory that his father mapped for him. Just as Rupert Murdoch had done seven decades before, after his father — a respected Australian news editor and former war correspondent Sir Keith Murdoch — died when Rupert was in his early 20s and left him a small Australian publishing company.

“My father firmly believed in freedom, and Lachlan is absolutely committed to the cause,” Rupert Murdoch wrote in a letter to the staffs of the two companies.

Murdoch’s message reads, in many ways, like a rallying call to his troops against so-called elites. The elder mogul has long seen himself as a provocateur, chiding news organizations he viewed as too bloated, too high-brow and too liberal.

For decades, Rupert Murdoch has fashioned himself as a counterbalance to the media establishment. He’s never shied away from using his outlets to influence politics and governments — in his native Australia, Britain and the U.S.

“The battle for the freedom of speech and, ultimately, the freedom of thought, has never been more intense,” Rupert Murdoch wrote in his letter. “Elites have open contempt for those who are not members of their rarefied class. Most of the media is in cahoots with those elites, peddling political narratives rather than pursuing the truth.”

Fox oral history: Inside the legendary studio at the end of its run

March 8, 2019

In some ways, Murdoch’s letter also felt like a mandate to preserve his legacy.

There have been tensions within family, and the succession battle that played out behind the scenes was intense at times, providing fodder for HBO’s fictional drama, “Succession.” Some observers have openly wondered whether the final episodes of the real-life Murdoch succession saga have truly been written yet.

Although the elder mogul is pulling back from executive responsibilities at News Corp. and Fox, segueing into chairman emeritus, he retains the family’s controlling voting shares of the two companies through a family trust, according to regulatory filings. Rupert Murdoch has the voting control of the trust, through its investment vehicle.

Control of the trust will be passed to his four oldest children — Prudence, Elisabeth, Lachlan and James — after Murdoch dies. They will each have voting shares. Murdoch’s two daughters from his marriage to Wendi Deng each have a financial stake, but not voting shares.

The siblings, particularly Lachlan and James, haven’t always been aligned in business priorities or in politics.

James Murdoch served as chief executive of 21st Century Fox until its 2019 sale to the Walt Disney Co. After working 23 years in the family enterprise, he no longer had an executive role . Three years ago, James stepped down from News Corp.’s board , citing “disagreements over certain editorial content published by the company’s news outlets and certain other strategic decisions.”

Rendering of proposed upgrades to Fox Studio Lot in Century.

Legendary Fox Studio Lot set for $1.5-billion expansion

Murdochs plan $1.5-billion upgrade to legendary Fox Studio Lot — formerly 20th Century Fox — where filming began nearly a century ago.

March 16, 2023

For much of the last decade, Rupert Murdoch has been intent on entrusting Lachlan with the enterprise.

After he graduated from Princeton, the London-born Lachlan joined the family business in Australia, working at some of their newspapers. Within a few years, he was scaling the ladder at the company in the U.S.

In 1999, he was named head of the printing operations in the U.S. and served for a time as publisher of the New York Post during 9/11.

He abruptly resigned in 2005, after souring on the corporate politics and moved with his wife, Sarah, and their children back to Australia to build his own profile in media there.

In 2015, at his father’s urging, Lachlan returned to the U.S. to work alongside him in the company.

Fox credits Lachlan Murdoch with savvy business moves, including initially making an $11-million investment in the Australian real estate insights company, REA Group, in which News Corp. now has a majority stake. The publicly traded firm is now worth $8 billion, and News Corp. has a 61% stake.

While running Fox in 2020, Lachlan Murdoch championed the $440-million acquisition of Tubi , a free advertising-supported television streaming service, which is now one of the most popular in the country. This year, Bloomberg News reported that Murdoch turned down unsolicited offers of more than $2 billion for the service .

But the media landscape is particularly challenged, and it will be up to Lachlan Murdoch to steer the enterprise through those difficulties, including cord-cutting and declining ratings for linear television.

“The changes the media industry has been through, and will continue to go through, are monumental,” Verna said. “The biggest one is how do you monetize streaming as the cable bundle erodes? That’s not a small challenge, but it will be one that Lachlan will face.”
