Leonardo DiCaprio Seen Living It Up with Friends on a Yacht in St. Bart's During New Year's Vacation

Leonardo DiCaprio is ringing in the New Year overseas.

The Oscar winner was spotted on a yacht off the island of Saint Barthélemy onMonday, surrounded by friends.

In photos taken of the Caribbean excursion, a shirtless DiCaprio, 48, is seen taking in the sights from onboard the vessel alongside four other individuals.

After DiCaprio parted ways with ex-girlfriend Camila Morrone in August after more than four years together, the actor was seen spending time with Gigi Hadid .

In September, a source told PEOPLE that DiCaprio "is taken with Gigi." They explained that the supermodel, 27, "is the type of woman he is usually attracted to" and said that "they sort of run in the same high-profile circles and would see each other at events , clubs, restaurants and gatherings."

DiCaprio and Hadid were last seen together in New York City in November, when they were spotted leaving the same restaurant .

Late last month, DiCaprio and actress Victoria Lamas were seen leaving The Birds Streets Club on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, California, separately, before they entered a car together.

A source told PEOPLE they were leaving a "big group dinner," adding, "They were also joined by a number of other people in the car."

After the Titanic actor was spotted with the 23-year-old actress in late December, her dad, Lorenzo Lamas , told the New York Post that she is "very smitten."

Lorenzo, 64, added of his daughter and DiCaprio, "I know she likes him very much. I think they met last month. I'm not sure of the circumstances, but that's what she told me."

He also noted that he offered Victoria some fatherly advice.

"I told her to treat the relationship like a holiday — just enjoy it as much as you can for as long as it lasts," Lorenzo said. "And if it lasts for more than a typical holiday, great. But if not, then just guard your heart, you know? Because she's very young."

According to Lorenzo, however, things between the pair are not serious .

He expressed to the Post , "She's fond of him, obviously. But they're not dating, and she does not want that out there because that would be really bad. It'd be embarrassing for her if he should happen to read something that said that they're dating and they're not."

Leonardo DiCaprio continues to be one of the most eligible bachelors in Hollywood, spending time on a luxury yacht surrounded by a ton of hot women in bikinis.

A shirtless Leo was spotted in St. Barts Monday while getting some serious vitamin D and chatting it up with multiple models on board before taking a dip and then laying in the sun.

Unclear who all of Leo's female friends are ... but one of the bikini-babes was Madison Headrick , Leo's pal Joe Nahmad 's fiancee.

Of course, Leo recently ended his relationship with Camila Morrone , after several years together.

He's been linked to several others since the split, including Gigi Hadid and more recently has reportedly been spending time with 23-year-old actress Victoria Lamas .

Clearly, he's not ready to settle down again any time soon.

Leonardo DiCaprio was seen enjoying a glamorous holiday in the Carribean onboard a yacht with a mystery woman.

The 48-year-old, who sported a pair of blue swimming drunks as he made the most of the sunshine, on the luxury ship, which was traveling around celeb fave, St Barts.

Among The Wolf of Wall Street star’s cohort was a woman whose identity is unknown, although she chatted along happily to the actor while wearing a light blue floral bikini.

His pal Joe Nahmad and his fiancée Madison Headrick, who wore a purple two-piece, were also spotted on the deck of the mega yacht, looking as though they were contemplating a dip in the deep blue sea.

The Don’t Look Up star is currently thought to be single after sparking rumours he was dating 23-year-old actress Victoria Lamas, when they were spotted together in a car in December.

While they left LA hotspot The Birds Street Club separately, the duo were photographed jumping into the same vehicle after the party had ended, although it’s understood they are just pals.

The photos came after many speculated the actor was keen on the model and mother-of-one Gigi. 

Heads turned after the duo were papped in September amid chatter Gigi would be the first  woman  over the age of 25 the star had romantically been attached to – as well as the first mother. 

Sources close to the couple at the time offered updates on the status of the new romance, sharing they were dating but ‘taking it slow,’ according to Page Six. 

They went on to detail the couple’s outings earlier this year, confirming they had been alone and also socialised with groups but are not labelling themselves as ‘exclusive’ yet.

Leo’s most recent official relationship was with Death Wish actress Camila Morrone, but following five years of dating they split at the end of last year shortly after she turned 25.

An insider claimed at the time: ‘Leo and Camila ended their relationship over the summer.’

‘There are no bad feelings between them,’ they added to  the Sun . ‘It just came to a natural conclusion.’

The Oscar winner was first linked to the model, stepdaughter of Al Pacino, in 2017, when they both hit up Cannes Film Festival.

It wasn’t until the following February that they attended their first event as a couple, celebrating Ellen DeGeneres’ 60th birthday party alongside a string of famous faces.

Camila previously made headlines when she hit back at the speculation surrounding their private lives, slamming those who quizzed their two-decade age-gap.

‘There’s so many relationships in Hollywood — and in the history of the world — where people have large age gaps,’ she said in a chat with the Los Angeles Times.

‘I just think anyone should be able to date who they want to date.’

Leonardo was spotted chilling on a yacht in St. Barts on New Year's Eve with Tobey Maguire, Drake and a group of gorgeous models to ring in the new year!

Leonardo DiCaprio enjoyed his New Year’s Eve on a yacht in St. Barts alongside his A-list buddies and a slew of models. The Oscar winner, 48, was spotted hanging out in the gorgeous waters with his BFF Tobey Maguire , Drake and one of the cover girls, Madison Headrick , who is Leo’s friend Joe Nahmad’s fianceé. Leonardo kept a low-key figure in a baseball hat and tee while he lunched next to Madison, who also rocked a baseball cap, plus a striped bikini top, as seen in photos here from DailyMail .

The yacht party comes after Leo was spotted with Victoria Lamas recently over the holidays. Last week, they were seen exiting celeb hotspot The Birds Street Club in West Hollywood and getting into a car together. Of course, the sightings have speculated romance rumors, which comes shortly after the rumors of Leo and Gigi Hadid being an item , after the pair were seen  leaving the same New York restaurant  on Nov. 18.

While many believe the NYE holiday should be celebrated with a someone to kiss at midnight, Leo’s NYE spent without Gigi certainly raised a few eyebrows. However, a source EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife that the actor and the supermodel are just “casually dating” and nothing has changed between them. “Leo is single.  Nothing has changed with  Gigi . They are casually seeing each other but there is nothing serious going on between them at all,” an insider close to Leo revealed.

Another source added EXCLUSIVELY that ” Gigi knows that Leo and Victoria were out with a bunch of friends which, of course, is completely fine with her.” The insider continued, “Although this wasn’t a romantic outing, Gigi has no opinion one way or another even if Leo does decide he wants to date other people. Her and Leo were never in a serious relationship to begin with, and they had no commitments to each other.”

The 48-year-old is clearly not ready to settle down as he enjoys bachelor lifestyle in st. barts.

Forever bachelor Leonardo DiCaprio is spending his time holidaying in St.Barts doing what he does best… enjoying some Vitamin D on a mega yacht with a plethora of women and friends, which included Tobey McGuire, Drake and Lukas Haas.

The 48-year-old Hollywood movie star seems to be enjoying a breezy life after recently ending a four-year relationship with Camilla Morrone after the 25th birthday of the Argentinian model/actress (feeding the narrative that Leo doesn’t date women older than 25).

According to a report in PageSix , the Academy Award-winning actor also enjoyed his New Years festivities on the yacht in the Caribbean with 23-year-old model Victoria Lamas, whom he has recently been linked to following the split with Morrone. Despite insiders claiming the two are just friends, this marks their fourth hangout in less than a month.

DiCaprio, who’s set to star in the upcoming Apple TV+ drama  Killers of the Flower Moon , was also rumoured to have been getting cosy with supermodel Gigi Hadid late last year,   as the pair were “getting to know each other” after being spotted partying together during New York Fashion Week.

“He really likes that she has her life together,” a source told People around that time. “She has a child and she’s mature. He wants to be with someone who has the same idea of good causes and political views like he does.”

Leonardo DiCaprio  spent New Year's Eve on a yacht in St Barts with a few famous friends, including Drake  and Tobey Maguire.

The Oscar winner, 48 - who was recently linked to 23-year-old actress Victoria Lamas - kept a low profile in a grey and white baseball cap and a white T-shirt as he partied with his A-list pals. 

The Titanic actor shielded his eyes with a pair of black shades as he enjoyed the last moments of 2022.

It comes after Leo was recently linked to model Victoria Lamas. They  were seen together three times  last week following reports that Gigi Hadid  was not 'serious' about their short-lived romance.

While the Hollywood hunk and Hadid were reportedly still dating in late November, the superstar appears to be moving on with Lorenzo Lamas' daughter.

Leo's outing with Victoria comes after he ended his four year relationship with Camila Morrone, 25, in August, a source close to Leo claimed to The Sun .

Victoria was born on April 24, 1999 - two years after Leo's iconic 1997 film Titanic was released - and is the daughter of actor Lorenzo Lamas and model Shauna Sand.

Lorenzo, 64, is best-known for playing Lance Cumson in the 1980s soap opera Falcon Crest, which ran for nine series.

He also starred in the 1978 movie Grease as minor character Tom Chisum, who was the captain of Rydell's football team.

Meanwhile, Shauna, 51, is an American actress and was Playboy magazine's Playmate of the Month for May 1996.

She creates incredible acrylic and ink works of art, including abstract portraits, and often documents the process of designing her work on Instagram.

The duo was accompanied by a group of friends on the boat, including Tobey Maguire, who also joined Leo at his Christmas party last week in West Hollywood.

Drake was also spotted on the boat wearing a purple and white long-sleeved shirt.

Musicians Drake and Lenny Kravitz  performed in St. Barts on Thursday  at the winter edition of the LuisaViaRoma for UNICEF charity gala .

DiCaprio also spent New Year's in St. Barts last year with his ex, Camila Morrone, when he was promoting the release of Don't Look Up.

It comes after Leo was pictured with Gigi for the first time after they were hit by romance claims, in exclusive photos obtained by DailyMail.com in September, following Leo's split from Camila Morrone.

Leonardo DiCaprio Welcomes 2023 With His 23-Year-Old Pal

Leonardo DiCaprio rang in the new year on a yacht off St. Barts, as per a report in PageSix . Joining the 48-year-old Oscar-winner was Victoria Lamas , the 23-year-old model , who he has been seen with of late. Though the official word is that they are just good friends, this is the “fourth hang out in less than a month,” the tabloid noted. 

Lamas is the second of three daughters between actor Lorenzo Lamas and actress Kathleen Kinmont . Victoria did not appear on the short-lived 2009 reality series Leave it to Lamas , which featured hijinks between her father, stepmother, and other half- and step-siblings. 

Papa Lamas had previously told the New York Post that he knew his daughter “liked [DiCaprio] very much,” but was not apprised of the specific circumstances. He did, however, use the word “smitten,” then joked he didn’t want his daughter taking any “trans-Atlantic cruises with Leo,” a reference to the fate of the passengers Titanic . (Dad jokes!)

Not only did the Caribbean-based yacht stay afloat this New Year’s Eve, it held a surfeit of celebrities. PageSix reported that Drake was aboard, as was DiCaprio’s old buddy (and current Babylon scene-stealer ) Tobey Maguire . 

E! News noted that on the night before New Year's, DiCaprio, Drake, Lenny Kravitz , Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup , Taika Waititi and Rita Ora , and Chase Hudson were all at the Hotel Emeraude on St. Barts (officially the Collectivité territoriale de Saint-Barthélemy) for a UNICEF gala. 

DiCaprio broke up with Camila Morrone , his girlfriend of four years, last August. It has been noted from time to time that the Revenant and Wolf of Wall Street star has a tendency to date younger women . Indeed, the data shows that the actor, historically, has a cut-off after the age of 25, so let’s check back on all this in two years.

Leonardo DiCaprio assisted in boat rescue of a drowning man near St. Barts

Leonardo DiCaprio helped give a drowning man the deep sea rescue he never got playing Jack Dawson in Titanic .

While vacationing aboard a yacht in the Caribbean over the holidays, the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star took part in the rescue of a crewman who fell from a Club Med yacht near St. Martin, according to The Sun . The boat DiCaprio was on, anchored near St. Barts, reportedly responded to a mayday call on Dec. 30, and helped find the victim, who had been treading water for an almost unbelievable 11 hours before being rescued.

According to the story, DiCaprio’s yacht, which he was vacationing on with girlfriend Camila Morrone and friends, diverted from its regularly scheduled celebrity vacation adventures to search for the Frenchman. The man, identified only as Victor, was found 30-some miles away near Saba Island, a tiny nearby island, and taken to safety just as a storm was setting in.

“The captain put the man's chances of survival at one in a billion — like winning the lottery twice,” a source told The Sun .

The report said the Club Med cruise worker — who had “fallen overboard after too much alcohol and a long night” — was severely dehydrated and was given food, drink and clothes before being passed to coast guards. It also claimed he was “minutes from drowning” when he was found.

A rep for DiCaprio has not yet responded to Yahoo Entertainment’s request for comment — nor has a spokesperson for Club Med.

Despite the heroics of Team DiCaprio, it was business as usual for the star after his vacation ended. He stepped out of the American Film Institute Awards on Jan. 3 followed by the Golden Globes on Sunday, making nary a mention of poor Victor.

However, his OUATIH co-star Pitt did make a reference to DiCaprio’s famous Titanic character in his Globes acceptance speech. Pitt said he wouldn’t have been onstage without DiCaprio, adding, “Still, I would have saved the raft.”

In the final Titanic scene, Rose, played by Kate Winslet, was on wooden debris in the water as Jack treaded water next to it. Her character survived and his — as we all know — didn’t. The plot point is one celebrities have continuously been weighing in on 22 years later, including “My Heart Will Go On” singer Celine Dion .

Leonardo DiCaprio Throws World Cup Party on the 5th Largest Superyacht in the World

The luxury yacht by the name of  Topaz , at a huge 428ft and with a price tag of £400million, is owned by billionaire Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan – a soccer fan himself as the owner of Manchester City soccer club in the U.K. The yacht is a luxurious boat that boasts a Jacuzzi, large swimming pool, gym and cinema on board – not bad if you can get it!

Leo was spotted out in Sau Paulo at the opening game which was Brazil vs. Croatia, sporting a Brazil scarf – clearly showing that he was a fan of the host nation! It seemed that due to his superstar status, he was trying to keep a low profile – although we are not sure that a yacht of this size is anything like wanting to appear low-profile!

This is also not his first time on Topaz since he had an 80’s themed party on board last April when the boat was moored in New York. He invited celeb pal, Oscar winner and Django Unchained co-star  Jamie Foxx  to the shindig as well as British actor and Lord of the Rings alumni  Orlando Bloom  on board to celebrate with him. It is rumoured that all crew members were ‘sworn to utmost secrecy’ for the party… and while some info has managed to get its way to us, one can only imagine what Leo and co. got up to on board – pics please if you have them…!

As we bank towards the famous runway, metres from the beach of Saint Jean, the visions that fleet across my mind are of Henri Matisse’s colour-saturated paintings. It’s my 15th visit to St Barths in 20 years but the visual explosion of the arrival – frothy neon-blue sea, acid-green vegetation, brilliant-red roofs – still makes my heart skip.

People imagine St Barths as a tropical version of St Tropez: pretty, charming but teeming with the frippery and posturing of wealth. And it can be that place, especially around Christmas, when the likes of Jeff Bezos , Barry Diller and Jay-Z and Beyoncé drop anchor just offshore, turning the harbour into a sort of floating car park. Or in April during the eight-day annual sailing race, Les Voiles de St Barth Richard Mille (founded in 2010 and considered by many to be the Caribbean’s ultimate sailing competition), when up to 80 boats glide around the island like supermodels. 

But that’s all an amusing sideshow to the real star, which is the island itself. St Barths has character in spades – something I am looking to capture for the book I am writing on the colourful French territory (published by Assouline later this year). There are boulangeries, traiteurs and pharmacies around every corner; even gendarmes on the streets. Not that it’s entirely Gallic: Christopher Columbus was the first European to set foot here in 1493, naming it after his brother Bartholomew. The French then colonised, followed briefly by the Knights of Malta; later Sweden held onto it for almost 100 years before returning it to France. All their traces are very much visible today, from the Gustavian architecture to the mix of cuisines.

The island has never been self-sustaining (largely barren and with no natural water source, which is why indigenous Carib communities never settled there for any length of time); so it wasn’t until tourism came along – thanks to the vision of French-Dutch aviator Rémy de Haenen, who landed the first plane in 1946 – that it prospered. He built the Eden Rock , eventually turning it into St Barths’ first hotel. Rockefellers and Rothschilds, Nureyev and Johnny Hallyday started to arrive. They fell for its contours, built houses, and the jet set began to come in droves. But the unique bohemian flavour is down to those who were born and live here – such as outgoing president Bruno Magras, who for 27 years staunchly maintained his principles: no big hotel groups, no golf courses, no tour operators or casinos.

A tiny island, whose widest point takes only 30 minutes to traverse in a Jeep, much of St Barths had to be rebuilt following the 2017 damage wrought by Hurricane Irma . I’d heard rumours that the general atmosphere had gotten a little fancier since. But apart from the opening of two Parisian outposts, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon and Fouquet’s (part of the Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf , above Gustavia), the laidback mood of before persists. Meanwhile, St Barths achieved the almost impossible feat of rebuilding itself in a way that, if you didn’t know about Hurricane Irma, you wouldn’t even notice the difference. 

Hotels have always acted as social magnets here. Of its estimated 200,000 yearly visitors, approximately 130,000 stay on boats and many rent villas. Only a tiny minority stay in the hotels, many of which have only 15 rooms or fewer; but visitors flock to their restaurants and beaches. The island’s two most famous hotels, Eden Rock and the Isle de France , were founded by British families: David and Jane Matthews and Charlie and Mandie Vere Nicoll, respectively (Vere Nicoll was, until recently, the only ordained Anglican priest on the island). The latter couple sold to LVMH in 2013 – the hotel is now called Cheval Blanc St Barth-Isle de France – and bought and revamped a much-loved property, Le Toiny , on the wilder south-eastern shore. The three make up, as they always have, the island’s golden social triangle, and each has its own quixotic character.

The Eden Rock, which sits on a bluff in buzzy Saint Jean, is a focal point – a place to eat and take the temperature of the scene. Over the years I’ve seen Rihanna, Leonardo DiCaprio and Bella Hadid all wandering around, and I remember David Matthews once telling me over a long, boozy lunch how he’d recorded a song with Johnny Hallyday in the mini-studio of the hotel’s Villa Rockstar. It is a little slicker since its post-Irma rebuild, particularly the new Rémy Bar & Salon, designed by Martin Brudnizki (the Oetker Collection, owners of the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, now manages the hotel), but the young French beach crew still jump around handing out frozés in paper cones, a French DJ plays every day, and the food (under the direction of long-time chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, an island regular for many years) is impeccable.  

Cheval Blanc is a bit like Eden Rock’s more grown-up – and demanding – cousin. LVMH brought in Jacques Grange to redo the rooms and young French culinary star Jean Imbert to create the menus at La Case, the main restaurant, and La Cabane, further down the beach in the sand, where deals are done over lunch and supermodels parade. The atmosphere is one of grand luxe – Bulgari hosted a pool-side fashion show while I was there, and there’s a Dior shop on the premises – and also of cosseting indulgence (witness the private yoga sessions in the garden’s pagoda with Nicolas Legrez).

Le Toiny is situated on the far wilder side of the island; its 22 airy villa suites done in reclaimed wood and white linen with touches of pink or blue stretch along a cliff overlooking the bay where surfers congregate. This is a place of big light and big vistas. Little touches add up to an abundance of character – the sweet carts that take you down to the beach club, for instance, which is so popular it’s all anyone on the island can talk about. I have lunch during my stay with the Vere Nicolls (I first met them 20 years ago on the beach at their first hotel, Isle de France), who shout hellos to every table and laugh with their waiters. “You know, our staff are like family to us,” Charlie says. It reminds me of St Tropez’s Club 55 but via Tulum or Lamu – feet in the sand, raffia lamps swaying in the breeze, music and happiness in the air, and a strawberry and red-pepper gazpacho that was so good I ordered it two days in a row.  

I meet up with photographer Antoine Verglas in L’Arawak Café for a drink on my last night. He and his wife, Christiane Celle (of the Calypso boutiques), have owned a house on the island since the ’90s. We dine at the new outpost of La Petite Plage , which hangs over the water in the harbour. The prices are steep (as they tend to be everywhere: this is not an island for anyone on a budget), the music is loud and the French waiters dance on tables throughout the night. “It’s still the same St Barths, isn’t it?” Verglas asks, as we bid each other goodnight. I think about it. There’s always been some fancy person strutting around, but also cool French beauties who don’t give a fig for smart labels or blow-dries, who still wear bikinis under colourful Poupette dresses to dinner. There’s still the sublimely beautiful drive down to Gouverneur Beach, which makes the heart soar as you catch that first glimpse of its contours. Still my beloved Ligne St Barth bath and beauty products, founded by locals Birgit and Hervé Brin in 1983, who sold them directly to sunbathers on the beach in repurposed rum bottles. And a lot more besides. So, yes – on balance, it very much is.

Leonardo DiCaprio , 45, sprang into action to save a man who had fallen off a Club Med yacht near St. Martin on Dec. 30, a report said.

“Leonardo played a blinding role in his own real-life Hollywood movie,” a source told London’s the Sun newspaper.

“He saved the life of a man overboard who incredibly had survived by treading water for 11 hours. Leonardo’s boat was the only vessel looking for him.”

The “Titanic” star was vacationing in St. Barts over the holidays and rented a boat with his girlfriend , 22-year-old Camila Morrone.

The couple, and some friends, suddenly heard a distress call for a man in need of help.

The “Once Upon in Time in … Hollywood” actor insisted on braving the rough waters to find the man, one hour before sunset and with a storm approaching.

Luckily, DiCaprio’s boat eventually located the man, who was frantically waving his hands in the air.

The castaway had been treading water for 11 hours, near Saba Island.

According to the Sun, the severely dehydrated man was a Club Med worker who “had too much alcohol.”

He was given food and water before he was passed over to coast guard staff for medical treatment.

Leo joined co-star Brad Pitt , 56, one week later at the Golden Globes, where Pitt won Best Supporting Actor.

“I also have to thank my partner in crime, LDC,” Pitt said.

“He’s an all-star. He’s a gent and I wouldn’t be here without you, man.”

Pitt then joked: “Still, I would have shared the raft.”

Pop Stars Made Millions From Russian Oligarchs. Now Some Have Regrets

Looking back on his years with everyone from the Replacements to Guns N’ Roses, Tommy Stinson admits he’s played some “strange places.” But a 2010 show with GN’R — a private gig in Moscow for a Russian energy company — still leaps out. “I can’t even believe we did it,” Stinson says. “It was like, ‘What the fuck are we doing here?’”

In light of the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine — and the global ostracization of Russia ’s most prominent moguls and biggest corporations — plenty of artists have begun asking themselves the same question.

For several decades, pop, rock, and now hip-hop acts have secretly pocketed hefty sums playing corporate and private parties in the States . Since at least the 2000s, a similar circuit has existed in Russia (or on overseas property owned by Russian businessmen). Dangling paychecks as much as seven figures, these Russian tycoons hired major acts — not only GN’R but Elton John , the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Killers, Jennifer Lopez , Sting , Prince , Robbie Williams , and Amy Winehouse — for their weddings, corporate events, and galas.

Before the conflict, such shows were considered just another part of a high-profile act’s revenue stream. “We knew about them then,” says one source in the business, who estimates that about “two or three” oligarch-funded shows took place each year. “We knew the background and the wealth. It’s a take-the-money industry.”

Now, that money seems tainted.  New scrutiny is being applied to these high-living oligarchs who have made or maintained their fortunes under Vladimir Putin’s regime. Their bank accounts are being frozen. Their yachts are being seized. Several governments, including America’s, have set up special task forces to go after the oligarchs. The idea — controversial in foreign-policy circles — is to squeeze some of Russia’s most affluent, and that in turn, they’ll squeeze the Kremlin to stop the war.

That has refocused attention on the pop acts that played those private shows , which have become an even more sensitive topic than secret gigs in the U.S. “No one will talk about this,” says another industry source. Indeed, by way of representatives, all of the major artists and all of the Russian tycoons involved either declined comment or did not respond to requests for comment to Rolling Stone .

Even if no one is willing to discuss the matter, there is a lot to talk about. (Unlike so many of his billionaire counterparts, Potanin has not yet been sanctioned by the U.S., UK, or European Union.) In 2008, Tina Turner and Deep Purple partook in a multi-act show celebrating the 15th anniversary of Gazprom, Russia’s state-owned energy company. (It was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department earlier this year.) Putin attended the multi-act show, although reports vary as to how long he stayed for Deep Purple.

The 2010 Guns N’ Roses show, held at the Moscow movie-studio complex Mosfilm, was paid for by Alexander Chistyakov, then deputy chairman of the management board of the Federal Grid Company, Russia’s largest state-run transmission grid firm. “It couldn’t have felt more awkward,” says Stinson. “They were a bunch of drunken party people who were glad to have us play. I didn’t see any fucking gold-plated toilets, but I’m sure they were there somewhere.”

Even after Russia’s initial invasion of Ukraine in 2014, these secretive performances didn’t let up. In 2016, Sting and Lopez played separate sets at the Moscow wedding of Said Gutseriev , the son of sanctioned Russian billionaire oilman Mikhail Gutseriev. That wedding, which cost a reported roughly a billion dollars to put on, included a 12-feet-high wedding cake and a ballroom ceiling covered in flowers; as parting gifts, guests were given jewelry-encrusted boxes. During her set, Lopez half-joked that “the hardest thing I had to do today” was learn how to pronounce the names of the bride and groom.

A year later, Elton John and Mariah Carey were the nuptial performers for a granddaughter of Russian billionaire Valery Kogan, who co-owns the Moscow Domodedovo Airport. (He, too, has not been currently sanctioned by Western authorities.)

Since the start of the war, a few musicians have admitted their involvement: “No oligarch in Britain, Russia, or anywhere else is in any position to book a gig, a wedding, or a party,” Sting recently said , referring to that wedding gig. “Those days are over.” After canceling an upcoming Russian concert, Deep Purple’s Roger Glover also announced, “Like many performers, we have occasionally performed private concerts for fans in various countries.”

Like a number of other Russian oligarchs , Roman Abramovich made his money in Russia’s chaotic post-Soviet years by buying privatized state assets at a discount and selling them for multiples of their purchase price — in his case, an oil company he bought in a reportedly “ rigged ” auction for $250 million and sold for $13 billion to the Russian government a decade later.

Abramovich has publicly kept Putin and the Kremlin at arm’s length as he amassed assets like the Chelsea Football Club. Western authorities say that’s a ruse. Abramovich has been able to retain his fortune and rather enrich himself, according to British and European Union authorities, due to his close relationship with Putin. EU sanctions describe him as “a Russian oligarch who has long and close ties” and “privileged access” to Putin and whose “connection with the Russian leader helped him to maintain his considerable wealth.” Britain’s sanctions designation detail “preferential treatment” afforded him by the Russian government. (Representatives for Ambramovich did not return emails from RS.)

Long before the Ukraine conflict, Abramovich forked over big money for pop stars to play full shows at his events. In 2009 he reportedly paid Amy Winehouse $2 million for an up-close show at the Garage, a Moscow art gallery owned by his then-partner Dasha Zuchova. (Winehouse, by all accounts, wasn’t in much of a condition to perform and put on a rambling show that started hours late.) A sign above the stage, which spelled out Winehouse’s name in gold lettering, was one hint of opulence to come.

The following year, Abramovich spent $90 million on a massive villa complex on the French Caribbean island of St. Barts. Soon after, he began throwing oversize New Year’s Eve parties, some complete with fireworks and tours of his massive yacht the Eclipse (with its multiple swimming pools and helipads and a submarine). Starting in the late 2000s, he lured Kings of Leon, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Killers with paydays that were at least six figures. (Paul McCartney also joined the Killers onstage at a 2017 New Year’s celebration for a rendition of “Helter Skelter.”) When Abramovich hired the Black Eyed Peas for New Year’s Eve 2010, he took over the entire waterfront of Gouverneur Beach, known for its gorgeous white sand. At the party where the Chili Peppers played, on New Year’s Eve 2012, guests were instructed to wear “island chic” and nibbled on caviar blinis and pancakes made with vodka and lemon-zest sauce.

One of Prince’s last performances, just a few months before he died, took place on Abramovich’s property on New Year’s Eve 2015. For reportedly around $1 million, Prince and 3rd Eye Girl played a long set of hits to a crowd that included Leonardo DiCaprio and George Lucas. (Past parties there reportedly also drew in David Geffen, Harvey Weinstein, and Ellen DeGeneres.) Patrice Abderrahman — a local chef whose company, Chef D’or St. Barth, has worked many elite events — still recalls the “beautiful silver cane” that belonged to Prince (who was suffering from a hip injury). “Abramovich makes very nice parties,” Abderrahman says. “He is very generous.”

In 2014, Abramovich also hosted Robbie Williams for a private show in Moscow, according to the hacked inbox of a top Putin political adviser. Vladislav Surkov served as a deputy prime minister to Putin and a close adviser to Putin on issues like Ukraine before the Russian president fired him in February 2020. Unnamed hackers reportedly broke into Surkov’s government email account and dumped the contents online in 2016.

The emails, reviewed by Rolling Stone , show an invitation from Abramovich inviting Surkov and his family to a private party in Moscow to ring in 2015. Robbie Williams and “other artists,” the invitation read, would perform for an intimate audience of 100 people, with fireworks to follow. After news of the performance leaked, Williams released a single about Russian oligarchs, “Party Like a Russian,” that appeared to be inspired by the incident.

According to a source in the event business, who asked to speak on condition of anonymity, the appeal of the Abramovich bashes wasn’t hard to fathom. “In this industry, various time wasters inquire about artists, or very wealthy people go as far as contracting and then pull out,” the source says. “But with Abramovich, you knew it was going to be a massive offer and that he was good for the money. It was secure. It was going to be easy and professional — a good deal for everyone involved.”

The source points to the money Abramovich has injected into countries where he owns businesses and properties — and the way in which the local governments looked the other way for years: “If you look at the artists and say, ‘Why would you perform for him?’ why wouldn’t they? Everyone else is taking the money.” That source also feels the situation overall could return to pre-Ukraine-war normal at some point: “I can’t guarantee it, but if the war was over and everyone forgets about it in five years’ time, it will probably be business as usual.”

For now, at least, artists are no longer taking that type of cash: The Ukraine war has made the thought of playing for oligarchs unpalatable. “We get inquiries for big names from some shadowy-looking folks in that region, and we just simply delete them,” says one leading events booker in the U.S. “It’s just not something to get involved in.” Adds a manager of several leading rock bands, “At this point, I wouldn’t be advising any of my clients to do Russian gigs. No matter what the money would be, it would be a terrible thing to do.”

“Playing for oligarchs and rich people is just fucking gross,” says Stinson. “That’s the only way I could put that.”

DiCaprio On Board Flight During JFK Emergency Landing

NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- The Delta flight that was forced to return to JFK Airport after losing one of its engines Sunday evening had one famous passenger aboard -- Leonardo DiCaprio.

DiCaprio's representatives put out a statement Monday confirming he was aboard Delta Flight 30 bound for Moscow.

According to the statement, "The Departed" and "Inception" star was en route to the Tiger Summit in St. Petersburg.

The summit is a gathering of advocates and government officials from 13 countries trying to help stop the extinction of tigers.

"He wishes to commend the actions of the pilot and flight crew in bringing the plane to a safe landing," the statement read.

The jet had to circle the airport for 90 minutes to burn and dump about 60,000 pounds of fuel to land.

A crew of 160 firefighters was on emergency standby as the jet finally touched down without incident just before 6 p.m.

One of the aircraft's tires melted as it screeched to a halt, but there were no injuries.
