RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Exam

Full details of the exam syllabus and requirements are shown in the RYA Yachtmaster Scheme Syllabus and Logbook (G158), which is available from the RYA webshop.

The exam consists of an oral and written test.

The candidate must provide the examiner with the following information 48 hours prior to the exam:

• A narrative account of the planning and execution of the qualifying passage providing all relevant details.
• Navigational records, completed on board a yacht on passage, out of sight of land showing that the candidate has navigated the yacht without the use of electronic navigational aids. The records must include as a minimum, planning, reduction and plotting of a sun run meridian altitude sight and a compass check carried out using the bearing of the sun, moon, a star or planet.

During the oral test the candidate will be required to answer questions on all aspects of ocean passage making in a yacht, including passage planning, navigation, worldwide meteorology, crew management and yacht preparation, maintenance and repairs.

The written exam will include questions on sights and sight reduction and worldwide meteorology.

Candidates who hold the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean Shorebased Course Completion Certificate (final exam must have been invigilated at an RYA RTC), or a MCA issued full STCW Certificate of Competence as a Deck Officer (Unlimited) will be exempt from the written examination.

Before you book your exam please check that you:

• have completed the required mileage and experience as skipper
• have read the syllabus in RYA Logbook (G158)
• have read and comply with the pre-requisites above.

If you need your Certificate of Competence in order to work on board a commercial craft subject the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed - see 'Related articles'.

Please note: Only those who hold the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence are eligible to receive the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence on passing the oral exam. Those holding OOW (Yacht 3000gt) will receive a pass confirmation certificate.

RYA/MCA Commercial Endorsements

To commercially endorse your licence you will need to take a medical from your GP in the UK or an approved MCA Doctor overseas, it is recommended that you undertake an MCA medical examination prior to the course in order for you to do your final Yachtmaster examination... Fast Track Yachtmaster Programme

If you put in the study hours both on and off the water you can achieve the coveted Yachtmaster qualification, known and respected throughout the world.

Course requirements

Fast Trackers – you should come with your own life jacket and harness, waterproofs, deck shoes, Breton / Portland plotter or similar, dividers, notepads and pencils. Please phone for advice before purchasing expensive items. Don’t travel with Dividers in hand luggage. The first month is your introduction to the Fastrack Yachtmaster course, introduction to the base, and all aspects of safety. Our RYA/MCA instructors will spend the first few weeks teaching you all aspects of the RYA Competent Crew Course, RYA Day Skipper Practical and RYA Day Skipper Theory. Sailing from Gibraltar or Barcelona with its excellent study and recreational facilities you will learn how to control and command the yacht in a variety of different situations. Tidal Milebuilding and Skills Training from our Gibraltar Base

Our Milebuilding Courses are intensive but enjoyable. Combining Skippered qualifying passages, and all the Tidal miles required to bring your skill levels to those required of the RYA/MCA. In Gibraltar or Alcadeisa you will continue with your sail training, close quarter yacht handling under power and sail, handling the yacht in extreme conditions and learning to manage your crew.

All students are finally ready to be prepared for the Yachtmaster Exam. The final few weeks will be intense, focusing on the weaker points to ensure you are well above the standard required. Pre-course experience / requirements

• 30 days at sea on vessels less than 24m LOA, 2 days acting as skipper on vessels less than 24m LOA, 800 miles, 12 night hours. 
• At least half the qualifying sea time must be conducted in tidal waters.
• All qualifying sea time must be within 10 years prior to the exam.
• Navigation to the standard of the Yachtmaster Coastal/Yachtmaster shorebased course.
• VHF Certificate and a Valid First Aid certificate (to be eligible to take the exam)
• For Commercial endorsement you will also require a Sea Survival certificate and a ENG1 Medical

Deep Blue Sea Training

Yachtmaster offshore motor examination preparation.

The Yachtmaster offshore exam preparation week provides five days practical boat handling and revision of the theory with all aspects of the examination organised.

In our experience the majority of candidates require some level of preparation prior to taking the exam. This enables you to familiarise yourself with the yacht on which you will be examined and also gives you the opportunity to develop good working relations with your crew and the other candidates.

Please be honest in your appraisal of your skill level - If you are really confident and have ALL of the pre-course requirements outlined below and have a good knowledge of the International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea, then a 4 day preparation week prior to the exam may prove sufficient.

If you have any weak areas or gaps in your theory knowledge there will not be time to teach you during the preparation week. This should be viewed as an opportunity to “polish” your skills.

If you feel that you would benefit from some further training prior to your exam then we suggest booking a one week “Refresher” course prior to the YM prep week. Please contact us for information as this will be tailored to your individual needs.

Early in the week the instructor will asses your strengths and weaknesses and coach you in the areas required to pass the examination; however our experience normally leads us to work on the following areas; passage planning, man overboard recovery, close quarters handling, skippering techniques, navigation in restricted visibility, pilotage and knowledge of the International Collision Regulations.

The instructor will debrief you fully as the week progresses and ensure that you get time to work on those weaker areas; however he will also be honest in his appraisal go your skills and if he doesn’t think you are up to the standard required by the examiner he wont hesitate to tell you.

Pre-course requirements

• Age: 18 years
• Completed Yachtmaster Theory Course
• A minimum of 50 days at sea
• A minimum of 2,500 logged miles
• At least 5 passages over 60 miles measured along the rhumb line from the port of departure to the destination
• At least 5 days experience as a skipper (acting as skipper for at least 2 of these passages, including 2 as overnight passages
• Note: at least half the mileage and passages must be in tidal water and all qualifying seatime must be within 10 years prior to the exam.

A Yachtmaster Offshore is qualified to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage during which the yacht is no more than 150 miles from harbour. The Yachtmaster Offshore is competent to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage during which the yacht is no more than 150 miles from harbour. The exam will include an assessment of your skippering skills, boat handling, general seamanship, navigation, safety awareness and knowledge of the IRPCS, meteorology and signals.

Event Details

What is the yachtmaster offshore exam.

The Yachtmaster Offshore exam will include an assessment of your skippering skills, boat handling, general seamanship, navigation, safety awareness and knowledge of the IRPCS, meteorology and signals.

Prerequisite Qualifications and Experience

• Minimum age 18
• Hold a VHF Radio Operators License or Short Range Certificate
• Hold a valid first aid certificate
• 50 days, 2,500 miles including at least 5 passages over 60 miles, acting as skipper for at least two of these passages and including two which have involved overnight passages. 5 days experience as skipper. At least half this mileage and passages must be in tidal waters. All qualifying sea time must be within 10 years prior to the exam.

My way yacht description.

Presented by DMA Yachting, the impressive charter yacht MY WAY is a 72 ft motor yacht featuring a jetski. The main attractions of MY WAY are her most appealing features and inviting socializing areas. MY WAY spends the summer and winter season in Greece. She was constructed by the renowned boatbuilder Ferretti in 2002. A succesful refit was finalized in 2022. The expansive yacht layout features 4 generous cabins and comfortably accommodates up to 8 guests.

MY WAY is classified as a superyacht. The prominent section of the yacht, generous aft deck, leads to the attractive and sleek main salon. The main saloon is a well-design space that is well-equipped to shield from the elements in comfort and enjoyment and boasts a number of entertainment options. 4 tasteful cabins are purposefully laid out with vison for maximum room, access, comfort and privacy.

Crew information, captain: george garifalou.

Captain: George Garifalou George was born in Athens. He graduated from the Hellenic Navy Academy in 2003 and started his professional career as a Hellenic Navy Officer. After 20 years of successful professional career in the Greek Navy he retired at the rank of Captain and began his career in commercial yachting. George has captained numerous boats up to 70 meters. With his vast navigation, engineering experience and extensive knowledge of the Greek waters he makes sure that guests will receive the highest level of service while cruising safely to some of the most beautiful bays and amazing islands in the world. George speaks Greek & English. Chef: Andreas Polyrakis Andreas was born in Chania, Crete. After successfully graduating from the school of tourism professions (chef) in Heraklion, Crete, he followed a 20-year career as a chef in European, Italian, Mexican, Asian, Mediterranean and Greek cuisine in restaurants such as: Nice & Easy Asteras Vouliagmeni, Golf Club Glyfada Athens and Ark (Chef Baxevani's team) in Glyfada which have been awarded as the best restaurant of traditional Greek cuisine in Greece. His second love for the sea led him to yachting. For the second season Andreas is on the "MY WAY" team fulfilling this dream of his, providing guests with his exceptional and amazing cooking. Andreas speaks Greek & English. Stewardess: Zoe Vaila Zoe was born in Athens. After her studies in Business Administration started her professional studies in classical ballet, modern dance, jazz, latin in the National School of Dance. After a successful carrier as a classic ballet dancer and teacher (P. Metaxopoulos Dance School, D. Tsoukala Dance School), her love for the sea led her to yachting industry. She has 3 years of professional yachting experience as a solo stewardess. Her duties include housekeeping, interior cleaning, bar tendering and guest service. Zoe is a hard - working organizer, enjoys challenges and takes pride in providing excellent service to those onboard. Zoe speaks Greek & English. Deckhand: Kostas Kostas was born in Tajikistan and moved permanently to Greece in 1992, because of his Greek father. He studied Law in Moscow university and he was worked in the construction business as a construction contractor. His love for the Greek sea moved him in the yachting industry aiming to be yacht-master in motor yachts. He has 4 years of professional yachting experience and he holds a License for Motor Yacht Skipper up to 24 meters. His duties include maintenance, exterior cleaning, water-toys and tender operations. With his excellent sailor skills and his warm smile, Kostas looks forward to ensuring that all guests have a memorable time during their stay on board MY WAY. Kostas speaks Greek, Russian and English.

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The remainder of the APA is returned after charter.">Price Terms: Plus Expenses

This project comes to life thanks to the cooperation between Cantiere delle Marche and Mario Pediol with Massimo Gino of Nauta Design and represents the union between the superyacht style and the typical explorer seaworthiness.

The Nauta Air 90’ employs high grade material and standards born out of commercial ship building, which is the genesis of CdM’s beginnings. The exceptional level of engineering and clean, easily serviceable machinery spaces are very engineer friendly and the full beam master bedroom is breathtaking in its size and stunning luxury.

Two Caterpillar C18 ACERT 885 HPmotors generating 2200 rpm propel the CDM Nauta Air 90’. Maximum range at 9 knots is 3900 nautical miles (approximately the distance from Phuket to just south of Melbourne, Australia) from a 22,000 litre fuel tank (more than three times the capacity of comparably priced production yachts). CdM yachts are specifically designed for long voyages and to handle open ocean sea conditions.

Yachtmaster courses Mallorca. A Yachtmaster qualification is a certificate of competence of the ability to handle either a sailing boat or motor boat (as endorsed) in certain prescribed conditions. The RYA set up a committee to govern its training activities in 1967 and the Yachtmaster Qualifications Panel was set up in 1971.

Our two-week packages start with a week of theory in our training centre. The theory course starts at 0845 hrs on a Monday and runs for 6 consecutive days. In the second week, you'll board one of our training yachts for five full days of practical training, Monday to Friday. (Sometimes Sunday - Thursday)
