Ferretti Yachts

The first member of the Ferretti Group of international luxury yacht brands, Ferretti Yachts builds semi-custom composite yachts ranging from 16 to 29 metres in Forli, Italy.

History of Ferretti Yachts

In 1968, Norberto and Alessandro Ferretti, brothers born in Bologna, Italy, added a boat dealership to their family’s successful luxury auto business, which sold brands such as Maserati and Lamborghini. At first, the Ferretti brothers represented other boat builders, but in 1971, they introduced the first yacht of their own design, a 10-metre wooden motorsailer, at the Genoa Boat Show.

By 1975, the brothers decided to focus on their boat-building business. In response to market demand they ultimately switched from sailing yachts to power vessels, launching the first Ferretti luxury motor yacht series in 1982.

In the decades that followed, the company expanded into the Ferretti Group with the acquisition of other yacht brands, including Pershing, Itama, Bertram, Riva, Mochi Craft and CRN. In 2012, Chinese investor Weichai Holding Group acquired a controlling interest in the Ferretti Group.

For its part, the Ferretti Yachts shipyard has continued to take full advantage of its relationship with Italian yacht design firm Studio Zuccon International Project to develop a full range of sleek, contemporary flying bridge motor yachts built with composite construction, and to market them around the world.

Notable Ferretti Yachts

Launched in 2013, the Ferretti Yachts 960 model is the largest planing luxury yacht built to date by any of the Ferretti Group shipyards. Measuring just over 29 metres in length, she provides a top speed of 31 knots when powered by twin MTU 16V 2000 M94 diesel engines. She features a superyacht-style layout with the master suite on the main deck, and four VIP guest suites located on the lower deck.

Shipyard Stories: Inside the Renaissance of Ferretti Group

Written By: Rachel Ingram

Alberto Galassi has a monumental mission on his hands. As CEO of Ferretti Group, the Italian bears the responsibility of not one, but seven, iconic boat brands: Ferretti Yachts, Riva, Pershing, Itama, CRN and Custom Line and Wally.

Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi 1200x800

Credited with leading the renaissance of the group, Galassi has spent the last decade helping the company to re-establish its place on the yachting map while “building some of the most stylish yachts ever made and throwing the best parties”. The secrets to their success? People, passion and Italian power.

Ferretti was established in 1968 by brothers Alessandro and Norberto Ferretti who cut their teeth as agents for American firm Christ Craft. In 1971, the duo launched their primary vessel, a 10 metre wooden motor sailor, followed by their first of many motor yachts ten years later. They became known for their innovative approach to engineering, and in 1989 established a specialist research centre to further enhance their vessels. By the early nineties Ferretti was shipping boats to clients around the world. At the same time, it was winning trophies at both the offshore racing championships, furthering showcasing its engineering prowess on the global stage.

Feretti fleet 1200x800

In the late nineties, Ferretti launched an acquisition campaign to bring together selected leading boatbuilders under the umbrella of a ‘group’. Starting with Custom Line in 1996, the business went onto acquire Pershing (1998), CRN (1999), Riva (2000) and Itama (2004). In 2012, Galassi became CEO and led the next phase of development, investing heavily into research and innovation, as well as processes and infrastructure. The group, headquartered in Forli, now has six shipyards across Italy and a portfolio which also includes recently acquired Monaco-based Wally, which joined the Ferretti family in 2019.  “Wally is the pioneer leading the path for the future,” says Galassi. “For anything new, different and ahead of its time, that’s where Wally comes in."

With Wally completing the group, Ferretti’s focus rest firmly on maintaining the legacy of its existing brands while modernising them in line with present day demands and innovations. This, Galassi admits, is the most complex part of his job. “You have to respect the brand and touch it with a soft hand because you cannot make a 180-degree turn after years of tradition and heritage. The complicated thing is to keep evolving while maintaining the iconic symbols, materials or performances of each brand.”

Ferretti Group 1000 1200x800

Riva is perhaps Ferretti’s most recognisable brand – or the “jewel in the crown”, according to Galassi, who has adored the brand since his father bought a Riva in 1974. “You cannot betray the origin and the heritage of Riva. You have to evolve to keep the tradition of the material and the elegance and keep the very sexy style,” he says. “At the same time, Wally has to remain super performing and disruptive, and Pershing must always be a jet fighter. You can't ignore the fact that they are the closest thing to flying with a jet on the sea is to be on the Pershing at 50 knots.”

Bringing seven brands together under one umbrella while maintaining their individuality was another challenge, Galassi admits. His strategy was to recruit dedicated teams for brand. “If you mix them, you're going to have a disaster,” he says. “There's no overlapping but, at the same time, by having the power of the group behind you, you have an industrial advantage in terms of purchasing and developing. How else can you make 50 models in five years?”

Ferretti Group Riva

While each of Ferretti Group’s brands come with historical prestige, Galassi says it’s the people behind them that make them the success they are today. “I'm just the director of an orchestra made up of fantastic players,” he says. “There’s a team of dedicated, committed, hungry, focused, happy and aligned people that make the essence of Ferretti Group. All of the women and men in management positions are entrepreneurs in themselves. They manage their area like it it's their own company. One of the best things I did was hire a lot of young people and give them the freedom to make mistakes.”

Since its early days, Ferretti has been a face of Italian beauty and craftsmanship, working with Italian people, artisans and designers wherever possible. “My friend Domenico Dolce, the founder of Dolce & Gabbana, always tells me: “Alberto, condannati all bellezza: we are condemned to beauty,” Galassi says. “As Italians, it's in our DNA. We grew up being surrounded by beauty for generations. From the artisans to the supplier, to the furniture company, to the fabric company, there’s something more – either you have it, or you don't. We’re Italians, we’re not perfect, but I think we’re beautiful.”

Alberto Galassi 1200x800

This Italian style will remain a foundation of the group as it continues to push the limits of engineering and invest in its future, which includes an increased focus on sustainability – including further investment into carbon fibre and hybrid technology – and continued expansion into security vessels – it’s aim is to become a major provider for Navy, coastguard, police and security forces worldwide. Galassi also wishes to launch a ‘services’ offering.

“I would like to enter what they call ‘the software around the hardware’ and provide services to the owners, like chartering, brokering and mooring. I believe that if you can provide to the owner the perfect package of boat plus services, you will be the number one.” He believes this will disrupt the market and be of value to his clients, who repeatedly tell him that the preciousness of time has been an important learning gained from the pandemic.

Ferretti Alberto Galassi 1200x800

Italy was hit hard by the Covid-19 crisis in 2020, but Galassi reacted quickly to introduce health and safety measures and guide the group through the crisis, leading it to flourish rather than flounder in the face of uncertainty. The figures are evidence enough of its perseverance. Between 2019 and 2021, the group presented 23 new series and semi-custom models, and in the first six months of 2021, Ferretti Group revealed revenues of €457 million – 75% of 2020’s entire turnover.

“At the end of the day, a boat is freedom,” Galassi explains as he unveils five world premieres at Cannes Yachting Festival, including the Riva 68’ Diable, Riva 76’ Perseo Super, Pershing 6X, Wally WHY200 and Ferretti Yachts 1000. “It’s your private island.”

Ferretti Yachts History

Ferretti Yachts’ history begins when Norberto Ferretti, driven by his passion for the sea, first persuaded his brother Allessandro to join him in a nautical venture in 1968. The brothers began by selling other companies’ boats, but within three years they had created their first vessel, a 10-meter wooden motor-sailer that was introduced to great acclaim. Dissatisfied with the inherent limitations of sailing vessels, the Ferretti brothers shifted their focus to building motor yachts. The first Ferretti motor-yacht debuted in 1982, cementing the company’s transition into a full-time producer of sport fishing yachts.

In the 1990’s, Ferretti Yachts’ commitment to innovation and research in advanced technologies led to their participation in Offshore competitions. The team won several World Offshore Championships, and Ferretti builders were quick to apply the technological advancements of their winning vessels to the production lines of their motor yachts. Ferretti’s proclivity for incorporating innovative technology in its vessels continues to this day, bolstered and expanded by the many brilliant designers under its banner.

At the same time Ferretti was raising the benchmark for yacht design, the company was expanding and internationalizing the corporation through the well-targeted acquisition of some of the best rated motor yacht companies. 1996 saw the foundation of Ferretti Custom Line S.p.A., moving Ferretti into the production of fiberglass flybridge yachts 28 to 40 meters in length. With the acquisition of several other key companies that decade, the Ferretti Group emerged as one of the top players in both the international market and the sport fisherman craft segment.

The Ferretti Yachts division was officially set up in 2002, as a designer, producer, and marketer of 47′ to 88′ fiberglass flybridge yachts. Today, Ferretti Yachts is thriving as a brand of the Ferretti Group, whose global expansion continues to the present day, as it maintains an active presence at the international level in Europe, USA and America, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.

Introduction to Ferretti Group

June 22, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 7 Comments

Today, I wanted to start publishing my views on one of the most famous brands in the motor yachts world, Ferretti, who became Ferretti Group , led by Chairman Norberto Ferretti and CEO Giancarlo Galeone. Actually, I have already published about the original Ferretti Yachts , in a former post (from a former blogpost blog, Yacht Buying Savvy ) which is now re-edited and much more complex in data and look. They “share a continuous quest towards quality, technological excellence, top performance, an exclusive, innovative design, maximizing comfort and taking painstaking care over detail”, as they proudly affirm of themselves on their carefully designed “musical” site. Elegant, indeed, Italian as expected. Remember Azimut , isn’t it? Another group, other Italians, perfectionists as hell and really good in what they are doing.

The Group owns some of the most exclusive brands in the nautical world: Ferretti Yachts , Pershing , Riva , Itama , Bertram (not anymore, read the important update at the end of this article), Mochi Craft , CRN and Custom Line . I’ll present here, all of them, one by one, in different posts. I hope to cover the presentation as soon as possible. Here, you’ll have just some boat samples from them all. It is not the first time when I talked about Ferretti, but now everything will be much ample.

During February-April 2015, Bertram Yachts left Ferretti Group , being acquired by The Gavio Group , owners of Italian superyacht builder Baglietto .

The modest 25.6m Ferretti Altura 840 motor yacht is probably one of my favourite’s. Although I wouldn’t say no to the beach club, cinema and gym in the CRN 124 (72 m.) “Azteca”. I understand that they plan on opening an assembly plant in China led by their majority-owner Shandong Heavy Industry Group-Weichai Group – Good luck to them I say. The potential for the yachting industry in China is huge.

The Yachtsman Report

Our hall of fame of ferretti yachts.

When EKKA Yachts was founded, in the long 1984, a successful relationship was about to begin and last for almost four decades. For 37 years, EKKA Yachts was synonymous with Ferretti Yachts, especially when it came to the Greek and Cypriot markets.

ferretti yachts_infographic.001

Having inspected each and every Ferretti model that was produced during those years, our dedication was awarded with four Best Dealer awards, six Sales Performance awards, four awards for Customer Care & After-Sales Service, as well as the 30 year Honorary award in honour of the 30-year continuous and successful relationship with Ferretti Yachts. The experience we gained gave us a high level of expertise towards this historic brand but also cultivated our celebrated client service.

Performance awards

Based on our own taste and experiences through these decades, we would like to present our "Hall of Fame" models of Ferretti, starting from the 80s up until recent times. Here are the "cream of the crop" of this historic brand.

FERRETTI YACHTS ALTURA 46/49 - HOW IT ALL STARTED

  • First motor-yacht in shipyard's history
  • Produced between 1985-1986
  • Aramat construction
  • Interior design outsourced for the first time

The Altura 49, with the revolutionary for her era platform.

49_1985-Cruising-0000_ds_13097

A yacht that was about to become a turning point in Ferretti Yacht's history and establish the brand in the motor yacht industry, as until that point the brand was only producing motor sailers. The Altura 46, that was later renamed to Altura 49 thanks to the platform that was attached to the boat's hull, making her 3 feet longer. A revolutionary idea for her era, as she was the first boat ever to use this kind of platform.

Amongst her many innovations was the material that was used for her construction: Aramat, a material that resulted in significant loss of total weight of the vessel. This had many collateral advantages, as the yacht could now be equipped with smaller engines without losing in performance. This means lower consumption as well as bigger interior spaces to use. Gradually, the competitor shipyards followed Ferretti's example.

ferretti 46-49 layout

In addition to that, Altura 46/49 was the first wide italian yacht produced and she was the first boat for which Ferretti hired a decorator for the interior spaces. Until then, the decoration of Ferretti Yachts was taking place in-house.

The interior of the Altura 49

FERRETTI 54/175 - A NEW LEGEND IS BORN

  • First Ferretti designed by Zuccon
  • Produced in 1992-1993 as Ferretti 54 and in 1994-1996 as Ferretti 175
  • One of the best sellers in the brand's history

The 54 is the first Ferretti Yacht designed by Zuccon International Project, as until then an in-house designer was used. The results were amazing, as the 54 is one of the best-sellers in the brand's history, if not the best one! The successful relationship between Ferretti and Zuccon lasts until today, a fact that reveals what a key decision that was.

The Ferretti Yachts 54, the first Ferretti designed by Zuccon.

edited-1

The model was later renamed to Ferretti 175, but no major changes were made as the hull remained the same.

The boat's interior:

Following the 54/175, Ferretti 60 and Ferretti 620 were produced, with the 620 having a different superstructure, different side windows and being faster.

FERRETTI 68/680/681/700 - AN ALL-TIME CLASSIC IS HERE TO STAY

  • First Ferretti to be designed by Norberto Ferretti
  • Years of production :  1998-2001 (Ferretti 68), 2002-2005 (Ferretti 680), 2006-2010 (Ferretti 681), 2011-2013 (Ferretti 700)
  • Widening of the covering windows which led to more aggressive and streamlined shape

One of the most beautiful Ferretti's ever designed, the Ferretti 68 was first revealed in 1998 and was later renamed to 680, 681 and finally Ferretti 700 until the last hull was built in 2013.

The 68 and 681 models were the best sellers of the series. The Ferretti 68 was the first yacht to be designed by Norberto Ferretti, who also owned the hull number 1.

  The Ferretti 68

f68 2001

As to the 681, compared to the previous 680, the first impression is that she is a completely new yacht. Space, comfort and a completely contemporary design, the use of teak and a newly designed line, made her a perfect yacht for its size and optimization of space. The new style was clearly visible externally with a more aggressive and streamlined shape thanks to the widening of the covering windows which combine with the new spaces such as the aft folding bench offering an area for relaxing while remaining in contact with the sea.

Because of its weight and hull design, the 681 can handle relatively rough water and still go fairly fast. That means it is ideal for cruising the Greek isles or the Turkish coast, as well as lazing along the French Riviera.

FERRETTI 731 - THE REVOLUTIONARY KIND

  • Unusual layout that stands out due to its symmetrical perspective
  • Produced from 2005 to 2009
  • Large open view windows on either side of the master cabin

“Living the sea”. These are the key words necessary to really understand the individuality of this yacht, which presents a revolutionary conception of space both inside and out. Beginning with the unusual layout that stands out due to its symmetrical perspective, to the dominating central beam inside the flying bridge.

FerrettiYachts731_2008-Cruising-0003_ds_14241

The large master cabin takes advantage of the most important Ferretti innovations in terms of space and luminosity: with a large open view window on either side that allows a view of the sea from the ample bathroom equipped with a semi-circular shower and toilet, separated by a sliding door. The large salon with dining area has been designed to match the symmetrical layout of the yacht with a central TV cabinet, double access to the bow section and the central control station. The external layout allows for a generous salon area with an aft folding bench that offers the guests a comfortable sofa for living the sea in absolute tranquility.

Her main purpose was to fill the gap in the 70-feet range, when the Ferretti 225 evolved to the Ferretti 80.

FERRETTI 225 - STEPPING-IN WITH THE "BIG BOYS"

  • The answer to the question if Ferretti could build a big yacht
  • Produced from   1994 to 1996
  • The first yacht constructed in the inland
  • Removable fly bridge

FerrettiYachtsCruising_0000_ds_11724

The 225 was a challenge for the shipyard, a challenge that needed to be won. It was the answer to the question if Ferretti could build a big yacht. And as always, Ferretti rose to the occasion and came up with a big thus sportive yacht, actually the most sportive yacht in its category.

Furthermore, it was the first yacht constructed in the inland, that could be transferred through the land, thanks to her removable fly bridge that made her capable of passing underneath bridges.

The 225 interior - her main salon and the master cabin

The evolution of the 225 model was the Ferretti 80 (1997-2002) that was later renamed to 810 (2003-2004).

FERRETTI 830 - "FLOOR-TO-CEILING" VIEWS

  • First Ferretti to have the new open view window in the master cabin
  • Produced from 2005 to 2010
  • Introduction of the hard-top in series production boats
  • Impressive volume below 24m

FerrettiYachtsCruising_0001_ds_20011

A turning point for the shipyard in terms of design and life on board, the Ferretti 830 ensures a completely unique view of the sea both from the bed, now facing the window for the first time, and from the bathroom, with two communicating sections.

The master cabin with the huge windows and the bed, facing the sea.

SubDeck_0004_ds_20026

The slender contours of the fly bridge are due to the unusual positioning of the roll bar towards the bow, which gives a valuable advantage creating an area of shade over the sofa during the hottest hours. The layout of the navigation bridge has also been reassessed and unites practicality and aesthetics in a pleasingly cozy way. Inside, the Ferretti style is immediately obvious with rich paneling in polished cherry-wood and extremely detailed fittings. Apart from the ample master cabin there are also two guest cabins and one VIP cabin with a double bed, all with en suite bathroom and shower.

FERRETTI 880/881 - HERE COMES VOLUME

  • Official debut in the luxury superyacht sector - new shipyard in Cattolica
  • Produced on 2004-2005 as Ferretti 880 and on 2006-2012 as Ferretti 881
  • Shipyard’s breakthrough innovation partnership with the Mitsubishi stabiliser

Ferretti Yachts 880

FerrettiYachts880_2005-Cruising-0003_ds_4319

With the Ferretti 880, Ferretti has made its official debut in the luxury superyacht sector, thanks to the newly established shipyard in Cattolica, which gave the brand the potential to build bigger yachts in terms of width and height. It was designed for those who wish to cruise in top-of-the-range style, without forsaking that feeling of intimacy, typical of Ferretti Yachts. The 880 was designed to maintain the house characteristics, and it has simple, dynamic and sophisticated lines.

The exceptional design work performed by the Zuccon International studio and Ferretti Engineering is particularly obvious on the flybridge, which represents a combination of styling and spacious luxury. It is an invitation to enjoy sun and sea in conditions of total relaxation. Everything is incredibly detailed, exclusive and comfortable, such as the whirlpool tub, the cocktail bar, the settees and the sundeck. She was a yacht easily compared to the Posillipo 95 in terms of spaces, even though she was significantly smaller!

The Ferretti 881, follows the huge success of the 880. Designed with those who wish to cruise in luxury without giving up the atmosphere synonymous with a double F yacht in mind, and planned according to the most rigorous Ferretti family feeling. The 881 is characterized by an innovative use of space, the design is once again by Studio Zuccon International Project and the Ferretti Group Engineering Division.

This impressive dedication to design has allowed for the inclusion of two large open view windows in the master cabin, increasing the space available for the bathroom and gaining an incomparable spaciousness and luminosity. The bed of the master cabin was facing the sea, after the success that this feature met in the 830 model. Great care has been taken to ensure the maximization of the external spaces: from the jacuzzi on the fly bridge to the cockpit which boasts a teak table suitable for eight people to enjoy the sea while relaxing. The generous salon with leather sofas and an ample central table reveals design and practicality. The other three cabins can accommodate six guests in maximum comfort and privacy; each with its own bathroom.

FERRETTI 960 - AS SMART AS IT GETS

  • The flagship of the fleet
  • Years of production: 2012 - today
  • Ferretti's first vessel with a master cabin on the main deck
  • Able to reach speeds up to 30 knots

The flagship of the fleet. The largest planing pleasure boat that Ferretti Yachts has made to date. 96 feet of sporty lines, best-in-class performance and supreme levels of amenity.

Our last Hall of Famer is the majestic Ferretti 960. She entered production in 2012 and has not stopped yet, a fact that reveals the success that this model brought to the brand, with 21 boats sold until today.

FerrettiYachts960Cruising_0003_10534

Breakthrough design - In 29.20 metres of overall length (with a hull length of 23.97) she can be manoeuvred like a pleasure craft, even in absence of a professional captain.

She is the brand’s first vessel with a master cabin on the main deck and four below, all generously proportioned and with premier fittings and décor.

FerrettiYachts960MainDeck_0007_19125

Her performance is one of her standout features as she is one of the fastest RPH (Raised Pilot House) motor yachts of her size, being able to reach speeds up to 30 knots.

The flybridge and stern area are a haven of leisure. When closed, the garage door offers a trio of cushioned sun pads, while the swim platform features a convenient mobile section that makes short work of launching and hauling out the tender. Intimacy with the sea is always assured, even on the flagship.
