Absolute Yachts’ most recent model is the 52 Fly, which rolled out at the 2023 Miami International Boat Show. From the first step aboard, it was clear the Italian builder had sweated not only the details, but also pushed the genre ahead of its competition.

The hull’s glazing, resembling a short, tanto-bladed knife and a vertical bow up front, also added to the contemporary design. Undulating LED lighting inlays in the cockpit overhang imparted a cool, sophisticated look to the space. At the same time, a starboard-side docking station spoke to this boat’s bona fides as a serious cruising machine.

The salon also had design touches that one might not expect to find on a 52-ft. semi-custom build. The aft galley had a four-burner Bosch cooktop and a six-foot-tall, stacked refrigerator and freezer that is useful for longer trips. The drawers all had chic leather tabs as handles, extending a beach-like, elegant vibe to the space.

The starboard-side helm was another place onboard that feels just a little bit different than the standard offerings in this size and class.

Twin Garmin screens were angled off in a small arc, as opposed to facing straight back, which gave them a slightly futuristic feel. Tightly stitched helix patterns in the seat-backs of the helm chairs pointed towards a high level of fit and finish.

A sturdy door next to the helm led to the side deck. Perhaps most important for the helmsperson, the Volvo Penta joystick control was maneuverable while standing on that side deck. The joystick and cockpit control station should make docking this boat easier than a conventional setup.

One of the other significant layouts was the flybridge. Absolute managed to make it look stylish and large, without appearing top heavy. The design included a large forward lounge surrounding the helm station, with back-to-front seats to port, and an L-shaped lounge extending back to the transom, with a center dining table. The side island with fridge can also double as a serving station. The overhead hardtop had an opening center window, and stereo speakers were embedded into the bridge.

Our final impression after a tour aboard: The Absolute 52 Fly was more than the sum of its parts. The boat was full-featured without looking crowded, but also highly functional. This 52-footer was clearly ready for a weekend cruise or extended voyage. The Italian builder proved that a well-conceived design makes for a well-rounded boat.

Reviewed: Absolute Yachts 56 Fly

In director John Huston’s 1948 film Key Largo , Edward G. Robinson’s gangster character, Johnny Rocco, says: “Yeah, that’s right. I want more.”

Well, when it comes to yachts, we’re just like him. We want more light, more space, more volume—all of which usually means more weight, and implications for performance and range.

It’s hard to give us more without sacrificing what we already have and want to keep, but that’s exactly what the Absolute Yachts 56 Fly has achieved. It falls in the boatbuilder’s lineup between this past year’s 60 Fly debut and next year’s 52 Fly, and it’s a yacht with serious personality. This Italian-built yacht is, as the builder says, all about charisma.

The 56 Fly has a snub-nosed bow and big windows forward that, to my mind, look like the eyes of a sea turtle. Those full-height picture windows to the sides benefit hugely from notched, cut-down bulwarks, as does the aft deck from the fretted quarter rail. These design elements are all about boosting the views out and underscoring the connection to the sea.

In profile, the 56 Fly has an abundance of glass, and a lot of it is structural. I like the side-deck overhangs and the way the hull appears to conclude with a raked-aft transom but doesn’t. There is only a low transom to aft-deck height. Rather than adding something conventionally opaque higher up, there’s just a stainless-steel guardrail and a glazed lower balustrade to provide a safe separation of the aft deck and hydraulic swim platform. Like most of the flybridge above, the yacht’s “cockpit terrace” is left bare so owners can choose from a range of Terraforma modular furniture or other setups.

Inside, there’s a galley aft, made all the better for the views between the overhead cupboards and the work surface. Near the galley is an amidships lounge with a dinette. Bucket seats are at the helm console to starboard with an adjacent side-deck door. Those picture windows are made all the more splendid because their center sections open.

Solar panels atop the optional hardtop make 1.5 kW of peak power available during the day. It should be enough to run a TV and the usual fridges and freezers (but not the air conditioning) without the need to burn diesel fuel.

The main salon’s decor majors on light- and dark-stained oak veneers finished in a mix of mattes and satins. The sole is also oak and treated with a nonslip lacquer. Owners can upgrade to the same finishes in the staterooms instead of the standard carpeting.

Those staterooms manage to offer quite a lot. There’s a little more than 6-foot-4-inch average headroom just about everywhere. The owners’ stateroom is forward, where there will be less noise from the engines underway and when the yacht is docked stern-to. There’s substantial space around the forward-facing king berth, along with a walk-in closet and ocean views from the elevated windows.

The VIP stateroom is full-beam amidships and large enough that some owners might choose to call it home. The smallest stateroom is to starboard with transverse berths and a full head across the companionway to port, doubling as the day head. A door in the back of this stateroom’s closet leads to a low crawl space above the keel that runs from amidships far forward to the bow thruster. If it weren’t for the door handle, you would never know it was there. That’s the place for strategic stores.

There is room in the transom for an en suite crew cabin with twin berths, meaning the cabin could serve as a fourth stateroom for owner-operators. Otherwise, the space serves as a lazarette. It’s accessed via a pantograph-style door and half-hatch on the aft deck. Owner-operators or crew can access the engine room through there.

Like the rest of Absolute’s model portfolio, this yacht has a pair of 600 hp Volvo Penta IPS800 diesels. They reportedly deliver a top speed of 27 to 28 knots. That’s what I got at half-load with the Trim Assist system engaged. At a fast cruise of 23 to 24 knots, the 56 Fly’s range is a theoretical 300 nautical miles. At a leisurely 10 knots, owners could conceivably run for 500 nm.

The 56 Fly is good to drive, whether from the lower helm or up top. Visibility is unobstructed from up on high, despite the height of the foredeck. Under acceleration, the bow rises steadily to a maximum 3.5 degrees before dropping off half a degree at the upper reaches of the rpm and speed range.

Alas, my day on board had relaxed sea conditions—no wind and virtually no swell—but Absolute Yachts says the 56 Fly is built for offshore passages in anything up to 40-knot winds and 13-foot seas.

A Seakeeper 9 is the usual gyrostabilizer for this model, but this particular 56 Fly, which was bound for Hong Kong, didn’t have one. This hull also lacked the increasingly popular Dynamic Positioning System option, passerelle and crew cabin—all owner choices that illustrate the builder’s ability to personalize the Absolute 56 Fly in significant ways.

Owners’ Retreat

Absolute is a champion of the forward owners’ stateroom. All but two of its seven 48- to 75-foot Navetta models have one, and those that don’t are older. This past year’s new models, the 48 Coupé and 60 Fly, both have the master up front, as does this latest, the 56 Fly.

Absolute’s 17-model portfolio comprises nine Flys, seven Navettas and one Coupé. The builder employs 250 people and is expected to deliver about 90 boats this year.

Where it’s Made

Absolute’s shipyard is in Podenzano, Italy, around 75 miles or so inland. About 100 miles to the southwest, the coastal town of Varazze is where most final commissioning and pre-delivery checks are done. Most sea trials are conducted from the town’s marina.

What’s in a Name?

Absolute is now giving its models project names and motifs, adding a little extra personality to its creations. Absolute calls the 56 Fly model “Charisma,” which is all about attractiveness and charm that can inspire devotion. The motif for this word is five stylized origami boats, and it’s used in just one spot aboard: within the laminate on a bottom corner of a main salon window. No words, just the graphic. Cool.

What if the allure of a new yacht made it something totally different?

Every detail of the Absolute Navetta 70 expresses the allure of a completely new model, starting from the dynamic and captivating appearance of the exteriors: the flybridge and cockpit terrace are much larger compared to those of other similar yachts. From the spacious terrace cockpit at the stern, where there is a third mooring station, a covered staircase leads up to the flybridge. It can, in fact, be openable if one opts for coverage through a sunshade, or fixed if one prefers the addition of solar panels, which are lightweight, efficient, flexible, and resistant to the effects of salt water. They are useful both while sailing and during port stops, improving the comfort of guests and crew on board. Absolute has always paid considerable attention to sustainability, even to the point of integrating this issue into the company ethos, which is characterized by a deep love and respect for the marine environment.

Its interiors are supremely sensual and seductive, with bleached wood, tones of white, grey and black, rounded corners on the furnishing accessories, and bronze detailing expressing a sleek and glamorous look. Freedom of movement is ensured by floor levels with a minimal use of steps, high ceilings throughout, and space-saving sliding doors. A sense of continuity is provided by the circular motif used for ceiling decor and light fittings. From all the interiors, vast windows establish a constant connection with the seascapes outside, in a perfect combination with the sophisticated design of the living spaces.

The flybridge of the new Navetta 70 offers a privileged setting, in two different versions A and B, from which to enjoy the infinite spectacle of the sea. It feels like part of a far larger yacht, with its progression of seamlessly integrated areas, from the forward helm station, to a wet bar, outdoor galley and dining table for 6-8 guests in the shade offered by a retractable canopy, to the leisure area astern with designer furniture that can be rearranged to suit the occasion, whether aperitifs in the warm light of the setting sun, or a platform for late-night dancing. The same sense of generous space can be found on the cockpit terrace and the saloon with its free-standing table and large galley, enhanced by the use of stylish colours and the exquisite crafts skill of Italy’s finest artisans.

From the foredeck sunbed to the stern platform , 52 FLY offers an exceptional cruising experience, enhanced by Absolute’s uncompromising quest for perfection in every detail. Even in this more compact size, when compared to the other models in the Fly range, internal space is exceptionally comfortable, with ample headroom and a minimal use of steps to ensure the greatest possible convenience. Outdoor spaces are designed for the best possible views, and the interiors feature Absolute’s signature panoramic windows .

The cockpit terrace is a flexible space that enchants guests from morning to night, with fresh air, the warmth of the sun modulated by the adjustable shades , access to the stern platform for a dive into the azure sea, and the chance to enjoy magical sunsets accompanied by the comforts offered by galley nearby. Modular furnishing can be arranged as desired. The glazed parapet and discreet stainless steel rails ensure the best possible views.

The stunning flybridge offers a beautiful setting for enjoying the sea, with settee, dining table , a bar unit , and a stern platform for moments of relaxation while admiring the scenery from a privileged viewpoint. The helm station is fitted with large MFDs that ensure fingertip control of all onboard systems, and its excellent visibility facilitates harbour manoeuvres.

The saloon is a fine expression of Italian design brilliance, crafted in natural materials such as light-coloured timber and natural leather. The galley is equipped with everything needed by even the most demanding chefs, and it is accompanied by a spacious pantry , an unusual feature in yachts of this size. The huge glazed area provides 360-degree views even from inside the saloon, and contact with the exterior is guaranteed by the three-leaf sliding door at the stern.

Absolute’s attention to sustainability can be seen from the electrically-controlled vertically-sliding windows which can provide natural ventilation, leaving the air-conditioning switched off if desired. In addition, the optional solar panels in the flybridge hard top make it possible to stay at anchor in a peaceful bay without the hum of a generator, by providing sufficient energy for everything necessary for a blissful day, from entertainment to refrigerators and other amenities.

The accommodation on the lower deck is a source of constant surprise and pleasure, with countless touches expressing an incessant quest for an unparalleled user experience. The bow full-beam master cabin offers many unique features, and its position in the bows guarantees peace and tranquillity. The large double bed is accessible from all three sides, and it is surrounded by vanity units and extensive storage compartments. The bathroom features Italian marble and the finest fittings. Thanks to two wide side staircases, it is possible to easily access a very large platform: close to the water and perfect to enjoy the sea. Because of the generous dimensions, there is enough room for a fixed section that offers a comfortable entrance to the crew cabin through a pantograph opening concealed in the transom.

A versatile and multifaceted yacht that actually offers multiple versions of herself, thanks to different configurations to furnish cockpit and salon, according to the actual use and for an ideal liveability in any occasion.

The interiors are designed with comfort in mind, furnished with elegance and embellished with the use of fine materials. Salon, galley and cockpit are adjacent and connected by a continuous design. The perceived sensation is of a large space without boundaries, enriched by modern lighting and entertainment systems, ergonomic air conditioning system and helm stations designed in detail, to be technologically advanced, comfortable and functional all at the same time. Absolute has always devoted particular attention to technological innovation, and the 60 FLY is proposed to the market with an equipment of the latest generation.

Below deck, you will find the owner’s quarter waiting for you: a full beam cabin without equals, with comfortable internal heights, exclusive furnishings and high-quality finishes. A refined and quiet environment, dedicated to absolute comfort and privacy, with a large walk-in closet, a sea view vanity and large side windows to feel totally immersed in nature. The real revolution? The owner’s quarter is at the bow, in a reserved area on a middle level between the main and lower decks, separated and far apart from any disturbances for the best experience on board.

The VIP cabin is, in all respects, comparable to a master cabin; queen size bed and plenty of space both for storage and for living, with en-suite bathroom with separate shower and elegant marble counters. The third cabin is equipped with two single beds, noteworthy are both the floor without steps and the ceiling height, comparable to the other cabins, not to mention a large window.

Finally, the crew cabin is directly accessible from a pantograph door camouflaged in the transom.
